2 Wheel problem of the 2018 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/28/2025

The wheel nuts on my vehicle are defective. The Ford dealership had to replace all twenty-four of them for "swelling". Evidently, the design of these wheel nuts (Ford part number acpz 1012 m) makes it impossible to remove without destroying them because of their defective design. According to Ford customer care, these parts are considered wear items and are not covered under warranty. In my opinion, wheel nuts may be considered a safety item, should they fail or if they are not removeable with customary tools during roadside emergencies. I purchased this vehicle new in October 2018 and since then several Ford dealerships have said they have issues installing and removing with these particular wheel nuts, and most are destroyed in the removal process. They have voiced their concerns to Ford with no remedy thus far. I am told these parts are also on various models of f-150 trucks. While I do not expect NHTSA to issue a recall for this issue, I would hope that a voluntary recall program could be enacted by Ford wherein these wheel nuts are replaced free of charge when service is performed requiring the wheels to be removed.

3 Wheel problem of the 2024 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 11/18/2024

At highway speeds, the car shakes/vibrates. It's scary. Took vehicle to Ford service. They identified the problem, acknowledged that it exists and was unable to fix it. Now, I'm stuck with this car that shakes and seems unsafe as it shakes. Additionally, was told by the Ford dealer that other Ford Expeditions have come in with the same problem and have been unable to remedy. Even with a case open with the Ford engineers, they were unable to fix. Ford motor company has been contacted about the issue along with the executive offices of Ford and the ceo.

4 Wheel problem of the 2018 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 06/05/2024

Lug nuts could not be removed using Ford's lug wrench. All lug nuts seemed to be slightly oversized preventing lug wrench from fitting. Had I been out on the highway needing to replace a tire, it would have required specialized assistance. I had to replace all lug nuts in order for lug wrench to be an option in the future. I do still have the old lug nuts.

5 Wheel problem of the 2022 Ford Expedition

6 Wheel problem of the 2018 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/15/2024

While parked on an incline, the truck's wheels disengaged and it rolled down backwards. The emergency brake was set. The vehicle has a known defect but the dealership will not expedite the repair.

7 Wheel problem of the 2019 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 11/06/2023

For months now I have noticed a significant increase in the handling of my car to the point it is erratic and almost hard to drive, I have had my alignment looked at and have also seen that the inside of my rear tires is wearing more than the others as told to me in service reports for my car. A recall was put out for my vehicle which seems to be affected by almost every single recall but it says my car is not affected by this one. Which is the rear suspension toe link fasteners may not have been properly tightened to the frame, possibly allowing separation from the frame and tighten the rear toe link fasteners, check and adjust the rear toe alignment, and inspect the rear tires for abnormal tire wear, replacing them if necessary. I think if anyone else has had similar issues this recall needs to be expanded to other vehicles.

8 Wheel problem of the 2017 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 06/27/2023

Wheels: tires were unidernflated to 25 and no dash warning received. Tires inflated to 32. Within a month severe tire bulge appeared no dash warning. Tires now replaced. Power train: yellow wrench on dash, SUV went limp after acceleration, SUV had limited forward power to pull over to side of road. Shut engine off, restarted, no yellow wrench, no problem for approximately 20 miles. Identical problem occurred 2 more times about 20 miles after the preceding incident. From Ford forums it appears there is an issue with the throttle body, but when taken to Ford for obd scan no error was found. This 2017 Ford only has been garage kept, gently driven about 34,000 miles.

9 Wheel problem of the 2017 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 04/30/2023

The factory Ford lug nuts have "swollen" so that the 2 piece "cap" has detached from the actual nut preventing me from removal or properly tightening the lug nut to the wheel. In the even of a flat tire, this would be impossible to change along the highway.

10 Wheel problem of the 2023 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/01/2023

The contact owns a 2023 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that there was an abnormal metal-to-metal sound coming from the front end of the vehicle while driving at slow speeds and downshifting. The contact stated there was something loose in the driver's side front wheel. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer four times, who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. 11 Wheel problem of the 2013 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 08/24/2022

Lug nuts cannot be removed due to defective design. Impossible to properly maintain tires or to remove wheel in case of roadside emergency. Each wheel has 6 lug nuts that must all work properly together. All 24 of my lug nuts had to be forcibly removed/replaced in order to perform tire maintenance and to be proactive against the safety risk of malfunction while being operated on the road. Ford has never made me aware of this issue. Krause Ford in woodstock georgia inspected the lug nuts and recommended replacement at my expense due Ford corporate not recognizing this as a problem with their product. Tire/wheel maintenance is an important safety issue.

12 Wheel problem of the 2017 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 08/10/2022

During routine maintenance the dealer informed me that my vehicle had swollen lug nuts and that all 24 needed to be replaced. This was done on August 10, 2022 at 62340 miles. At least the muffler belt was ok !.

13 Wheel problem of the 2017 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 08/08/2022

I wanted to have a tire rotation and balance completed at the dealership but they could not do it due to the swelling of the lug nuts. I don’t have any way to change my tire in case of a flat along the road or worse, a wheel falling off.

14 Wheel problem of the 2011 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 04/04/2022

While getting tires replaced (discount tire), the representative pointed out that the aluminum-shelled lug nuts had swollen and become so deformed that the correctly sized socket could not be used. Furthermore they could not be accurately torqued. The lug nuts had to be replaced, which cost $175.

15 Wheel problem of the 2018 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/26/2022

The lug nuts swell and thus disable the lug wrench or any standard socket from removal. This has prevented me from changing tire or brakes because I can't remove the wheel.

16 Wheel problem of the 2018 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/21/2022

When trying to change a flat, the factory provided lug wrench would not go onto the factory lug nuts. I was able to get to the tire shop and was advised of an on going issue with the Ford lug nuts “swelling “ which in turn would not allow me to remove them to change the tire. After further digging there seems to be many many complaints of this same issue. It was recommended to purchase new ones that were not a two piece design as the oem Ford ones are. I was told that this could and most likely would continue to happen and could even cause the wheel to come off in worst case scenario. I had to pay 195 dollars for a new set cause I had no other choice being on the road and away from home or a dealership.

17 Wheel problem of the 2011 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/16/2022

2 piece lug nuts swelled creating a dangerous situation where the lugs were extremely difficult to remove. If the vehicle experienced a flat tire, they would be difficult if not impossible to remove on the road.

18 Wheel problem of the 2017 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 02/12/2022

Getting tires change and lug nuts are swollen. I heard this is a very common problem and now needs to be replaced.

19 Wheel problem of the 2017 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/28/2022

Ford makes a 2 part faulty lugnuts which warps and can cause separation and consequently an accident! I was told at my last oil change January 2022 that I'd need to pay to have the lug nuts changed but they'd put the same. Or I can buy after market lug nuts which is 1 whole part and pay to replace all of them.

20 Wheel problem of the 2017 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/19/2022

Unable to change tire because of swollen lug nuts: the nominal size socket is too small and the next size up is too large. Had to have vehicle towed to a shop to get the lug nuts removed.

21 Wheel problem of the 2018 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 11/12/2021

The aluminum caps on the lug nuts swell making them impossible to remove with the standard lug wrench. Rather than equipping the vehicles with quality single piece lug nuts instead they are cheap lugs nuts with flimsy caps that are prone to early and premature failure. When I got a flat tire I was unable to remove the lug nuts with the standard lug wrench provided. What should have been a straightforward 1/2 hour tire change ended up being an over 4 hour ordeal on the side of the road. The only way to remove the lugs nuts was with a damaged lug extractor tool which I did not have at the time. The only way to get the tire changed was pay for a tow and then have all 24 lug nuts removed and replaced with better quality single piece nuts at a specialty shop at my expense.

22 Wheel problem of the 2016 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 10/30/2021

During normal dealer service interval, I was advised by car dealer that lug nuts were in need of replacement. As vehicle is less than 5 years old and has under 60k miles, I said that seemed abnormal. Service agent advised they “see it all the time. ” as this seems like a safety issue, I inquired if there was a recall or service bulletin. Advised, there was none. Work was completed. I contacted Ford motor company and asked about issue and reimbursement. They told me it was a known issue and that no recall existed and therefore they would not reimburse. They told me their current position is that lug nuts are a “wear and tear item” like tires. I told them never in my life of driving (over 4 decades and in excess of million miles) have I ever been advised that lug nuts need replacing.

23 Wheel problem of the 2013 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 09/22/2021

During a recent oil change and tire rotation, my mechanic advised the lug nuts on my tires needed to be replaced due to swelling and distortion. I was advised this is a known problem by Ford but no recall is in force as of yet. I incurred a cost to have all of them replaced.

24 Wheel problem of the 2016 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 08/10/2021

I had a flat tire and needed to install the spare tire. I jacked the vehicle up and tried to take the wheel lug nuts off. The manufacturer supplied lug removal bar's head would not fit over the wheel lug nuts. Consequently, I was not able to remove the flat tire and install the spare tire. Saftey was compromised by having to drive on a damaged tire approximately 10 miles to a repair shop. Had I been out of town or on a highway the saftey issues would have been greatly magnified. The repair shop had difficulty removing the lug nuts. They had to use special half sized sockets and pound the sockets onto the lug nuts before they could be removed. The independent service center states that this issue is not unusual for Ford products with two piece lug nuts. This incident did not cause an accident, injury or vehicle damage. Nothing was reported to any authorities, excluding this incident report. Bottm line; in cases of road side tire failure, the damaged tire needs to able to be removed and the spare installed to facillitae safe transport to a repair facility.

25 Wheel problem of the 2017 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 05/19/2021

During a recent routine mileage based tire rotation and balance at an independent service center , the technician had difficulty placing the socket onto the lug nuts to remove them. He had to tap the socket wrench with a hammer to get the socket onto the nut. Tech illustrated where the lug nuts had swollen and he had seen this on other Ford vehicles. This factory lug nut is a 2-part assembly and swells over time to the point where a standard and factory supplied socket on the vehicle would not work properly if there was a situation where the tire needed to be changed . Ie. . A flat on the side of the highway. This vehicle is less than 5 yrs. Old. . . I purchased a complete new set of 24 lug nuts before leaving. A true safety issue of one being able to use the vehicle equipment to safely remove and replace a tire without concern over whether the socket will fit the lug nuts and removing the lug nuts from the socket. I have opened a case with Ford.

26 Wheel problem of the 2020 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 10/01/2020

The vehicle shakes/vibrates when driving over 65mph, gets worse the faster you go. Seems worse in the middle of the vehicle. Took it to Ford dealer we purchased from and they couldn't find an issue, just said its something with the tires or rims. Took it to local Ford dealer and same thing, said it was rims or tires giving vibration. Brand new vehicle!! should be a smooth ride, and dealer has no idea why it does this, and has no solutions other than good luck. Started last summer, after the vehicle was towed. Dealers didn't notice any damage or anything notable underneath the vehicle.

27 Wheel problem of the 2014 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 09/18/2020

Wheel nuts were swollen and had to be replaced. Just a week prior I had a flat tire and the nuts were removed without incidence. Had they been swollen at the time I would have been stranded on the side of the road out of town from family/friends alone. The tow company, due to covid, could not take me to where my car would have been towed. Luckily, the nuts were able to be removed at the time of flat.

29 Wheel problem of the 2017 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/03/2020

Exiting the 215 northbound, we stopped and parked at a store. While parked the indicator light came on for low tire pressure. I did not pay that much attention because the car indicator light has come on before and the car had recently had its routine maintenance check. When driving was resumed the car began to wobble. Assuming we had a flat, we attempted to drive to a more illuminated area to inspect the car and call road side services. The car at this point was beginning to decelerate almost to a stop so I inched car onto an unpaved area. I assumed the car's slowing and stopping on its own was a safety feature. As I pulled to the side of an unpaved city road, I had my foot on the brake but not in the parking gear. The car was stationary as my sister exited the car and to inspect the tires. The right rear passenger tire was fully deflated. My two daughters were about to get out of the car so had unfastened their seatbelts. This is when the car made a quick sudden jerk forward, I pressed my foot on brake to make sure the car was at a complete stop and that was when it felt like a force had pushed the car to top speed, an sudden unintended and forceful acceleration. I attempted to brake but I had no control. I was trying to avoid hitting the pole, but also had no control over the steering wheel. The car collided with a water valve/pole and chain link fence at top speed.

30 Wheel problem of the 2015 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/16/2019

In 2015 while living in north dakota I purchased a 2015 Ford Expedition el. In 2018 I moved to florida and had new tires installed in 2019. Now, 5,000 miles later I am told the lug nuts are swollen and my tires cannot be rotated, I need to buy new lug nuts. I was shocked and never heard of this, I stopped in the local Ford dealer and was told this is true, Ford decided to put these two piece lug nuts on new vehicles, "we have seen this a lot". I ask if there was a recall and was told "I wish". The dealership suggested I shop at an auto parts store because "ours are pretty pricey at $8 a piece, it will be costly if you need to replace lug nuts on all 4 wheels". I called Ford corporate in detroit and was transferred to a call center in the philippines were the female could only read from a script stating "this problem is not covered by the manufactures warranty. ".
