36 Wheel problem of the 2014 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 10/07/2017

Low tire sensor kept going off. Kept taking vehicle to north cascade Ford and les schwab tire centers to have sensors reset and tires checked. Different tires at different times were low. Started at approximately 41000 miles. On October 7,2017 front driver tire was completely flat. Aired it up and went to les schwab. After checking all 4 tires and not finding any problem with the tires, which were purchased at les schwab the tire technician found that three of the four wheels that came on the vehicle when purchased (purchased new from north cascade Ford) were cracked and allowing air from the tires to leak out. Called the service department at north cascade Ford and the only response was the warranty has expired, suggested a call to Ford customer service which resulted in a conversation with a person who did not dpeak english very understandably saying they would focument the phone call. Les schwab tire center did document the cracked wheels on the invoice of the new wheels that were purchased from them.

37 Wheel problem of the 2005 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 09/26/2016

I have an 05 Expedition eddie bauer edition and the truck was shuddering and vibrating while on incline or driving. It also would hesitate upon acceleration. The next day the truck will only roll in reverse it will not drive forward and the "check electronic throttle control" message continues to pop up. Drove it and all of a sudden it wouldn't shift, and all gauges went flat, truck was still revving but gauges were at zero and the truck wouldn't move. I was going 60 mph. And it just stopped moving completely. Cannot drive the truck.

39 Wheel problem of the 2002 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 04/18/2016

The vehicle was driven earlier that day for about 2 to 3 miles and then it was parked inside a private mobile home park. After 30 to 45 minutes had passed, an explosion was heard outside the mobile home park; the vehicle exploded and was on fire. The explosion occurred in the hood and now it is a total loss. This occurred on April 18th, 2016. We contacted the national highway traffic safety administration and they informed us that a recall back in 2005 was issued. The Ford motor company has not helped us out in this accident.

40 Wheel problem of the 1999 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/03/2016

Spare tire fell off. The tiny (1/8") steel cable that held spare in place under the truck body failed allowing huge spare tire to drop to road. Fortunately, this happen as I was pulling into driveway after a 2000 mile trip. Had this occurred on i95 in 75mph / bumper-to-bumper traffic, it would have been a disaster for the following vehicles. A web search shows that this is not uncommon and should the subject of a safety recall.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that all four rims were bent. The vehicle was taken to another independent mechanic who diagnosed that the belts and bands were worn for all four tires and that all four tires could have blown out. The mechanic stated that the front passenger side tire was frayed to the point that it could blow out and needed to be replaced. All four tires were replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 102,000.

42 Wheel problem of the 1998 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 06/02/2014

On two separate occasions, the lug bolts have broken off of the vehicle when in motion. The last occurrence lost 3 lug bolts at the same time. The lug bolts shear off along with the lug nuts. There was a recall in 1998, and Ford states that my vehicle was brought in in December of that year for the recall. This happens on the front and back wheels. There are many reports online about this happening.

I was driving on a two lane highway, fm 185. I was driving northeast while the other driver was somewhat stopped heading west, trying to turn south onto cattle drive. The other driver was stopped at an intersection awaiting to turn left. The other driver turned left in front of me as I was headed straight. The initial impact was driver's front side and then down the drivers side door. We hit, and then my vehicle did a 180 degree turn which turned my vehichle around facing my intial path of direction. My airbags did not deploy. I had curtain side airbags, driver, and passenger air bags as well. The airbags of the car causing the accident did deploy.

47 Wheel problem of the 2003 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 07/27/2012

I was driving on the interstate on 7/27/12 to take my daughter back to her mother, as I had my daughter during summer visitation. Half-way into my trip (525 miles one-way) it started to rain and I hydro-planed, resulting in a one-car accident. I slid from the inner lane (passing lane), across the outer lane, into the shoulder and crashed into a guard-rail. If not for the guard-rail, my vehicle would have fallen about 30-feet from the interstate to the elevation below. After the responding department arrived (highway patrol and local police departments), we evaluated that my daughter and I were ok physically. Once I started to evaluate the damage, I looked at the front tires and they are severely warped!! I'm not an automobile aficionado, but my front tires (both) are completely bald on the outer portion of the tires, while the inner threads on the tires show little wear (the tires are only 2 years old). From what I have gathered, the "cupping" the tires experienced are from a faulty/defective front end alignment. I noticed shortly into my trip, that my steering wheel had a moderate vibration. I have had a similar experience when I used to own a 1997 Ford explorer (it always need a front end alignment/adjustment). I was not ticketed for the incident and am coming to the conclusion that the faulty front end alignment may be the cause of the steering vibration, and the wheels cupping, resulting in uneven tread-wear, leading to my hydroplaning accident. . .

48 Wheel problem of the 1999 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/13/2012

1999 Expedition XLT 4wd w/17" steel wheels. While traveling on a well graded gravel road, about 35mph the ride suddenly became shuddering, like a tire was going flat. As I was slowing to stop & check it, but while still travelling about 20-25 mph, there was a sudden thumping thud, and the right rear corner of the vehicle dropped, as if the tire had failed, accompanied by immediate loss of speed. Upon stopping & exiting to change the tire, I found that the right rear tire & wheel were completely missing, and the vehicle was resting on the brake rotor. Upon closer inspection, there were no lug bolts upon which to mount the spare. I found the tire & wheel off the side of the road, fully inflated; and also found the hubcap & all of the lug nuts strewn along the roadway. The nuts had the sheared off/broken stubs of the lug studs still attached to them. No injuries resulted, nor was there any other property damage; no other vehicles or persons were affected by the incident. When the wheel came off of the hub, it did extensive body damage to the wheel well area and to the quarter panel/fender area. Vehicle was towed to a repair shop, and my insurance company notified for a possible damage claim. I subsequently heard of a recall of newer Ford vehicles with 17" steel wheels exhibiting this same problem, so decided to file a report.

49 Wheel problem of the 1998 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 07/17/2011

The contact owns a 1998 Ford Expedition. While driving approximately 45 mph the vehicle began to shake vigorously and the contact drove the vehicle onto the emergency lane. The contact noticed one of the lug nuts was missing and that the studs and rim were damaged. The contact replaced the rim and took the vehicle to an independent mechanic. The mechanic replaced the lug nuts, the studs, the axle seals and the parking brake shoes. The vehicle was repaired. There was a recall under NHTSA campaign number: 98v095000(wheels:lugs/nuts/bolts) that may be related to the failure. The dealer was made aware of the failure and stated the VIN was not included. The approximate failure mileage was 160,000.

50 Wheel problem of the 2011 Ford Expedition

51 Wheel problem of the 2010 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 10/20/2010

When driving the 2010 Ford Expedition through virtually any puddle, as the water hits the front wheels it is thrown directly up onto the windshield of the SUV. I have owned many vehicles and they always are designed to push the water away/under the vehicle. This is a very serious issue as you loose all visibility every time you run through a puddle of water. Having the windshield wipers on high still takes 3-4 cycles to clear the amount of water that is dumped on the windshield. So you are driving blind until you exit the puddle/water along the side of the road (which can be quite a distance with heavy rains and water running down the sides of the road). Many people have complained to Ford and the response is how Ford handles all of the complaints about any of their vehicles. . . . 'no problem found. The vehicle is operating as designed. ' here lies the issue. It has a major design flaw that creates an extremely dangerous situation for anyone driving these vehicles in the rain. Ford should be forced to develop a design fix for this issue, and ordered to stop selling additional vehicles until this fix is rolled out. Ford is still the same company they were in the 80's and 90's. . . . Deny responsibility and hope people will just go away. Please investigate this before people are killed due to Ford's poor design of this vehicle. Ford won't have records complaints, because the dealers won't write a repair order for it since there is no fix. This is the same approach Ford is taking on the 6 speed transmission issues these vehicles have also.

52 Wheel problem of the 2006 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 04/16/2010

2006 Ford Expedition (law enforcement package) with steel wheels and approx. 120,000 miles; wheel separation (cracked along weld). Prior to the failure, this vehicle was used daily for routine law enforcement patrol duties. We have had this issue on several 2006 Expeditions. Upon learning of the potential for the wheel failure, we have implemented procedures to inspect the wheels for cracks and other damage regularly. In all cases, there have been no obvious warning signs before failure. This problem was discovered when the officer noticed a flat tire prior to starting his shift for the day. Upon finding the cracked wheel a new replacement wheel was installed on the vehicle.

53 Wheel problem of the 2006 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 02/17/2010

Tire rim failure on a 2006 Ford Expedition used by a u. S. Forest service law enforcement officer. The vehicle currently has 88,607 miles. After report 10307412, we completed a fleet wide inspection of Ford vehicles with steel wheels. This is the 4th incident of this nature to occur within 2 years. The other 3 times the failure occurred on other Ford Expeditions. Reports were filed here. See complaint 10286279, 10307412. Based on prior 3 failures, a unit-08 forest wide inspection of Ford vehicles with steel wheels is underway. I currently have two rims with typical rim failure at the bead face weld from two different vehicles. Please advise if photo documentation is required. After inspection by Ford technician, all 4 wheels were replaced. Recommend Ford initiate a recall on steel wheel for crack inspection associated with 2003 and newer Ford vehicles with steel wheels.
