One problem related to transmission noise has been reported for the 1996 Ford Explorer. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Transmission was whistling/rubbling, and would not drive. At 13 months old transmission was replaced. Currently, noises were back, but it was running. Dealer told consumer not to drive vehicle.
