Seven problems related to check engine light on have been reported for the 1997 Ford Explorer. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I have had my1997 Ford Explorer for two years, the same problem keeps recurring. It becomes suligish on the on set, than the check engine light comes on. 12 times now I have had to replace the spark plugs, 3 times I have done fuel enjection cleans, 2 times I have changed the O2 sensor. I have talked to other owners that speak of the same problems.
While traveling about 35mph, check engine light appeared. Took vehicle to dealer who indicated that the intake gasket was loose and resulted in the check engine light coming on. Dealer noted that the gasket allowed dirt to enter the engine.
Check engine light came on while dirving 25-35 mph. Vehicle had no power/ brakes. Vehicle coasted to a parking lot to avoid an accident. Was not able to steer car.
Check engine light came on, due to engine sensor failure.
While driving on highway at 65 mph suddenly the engine light came on and the engine cut off. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the dealer said that the engine needs to be replaced.
While traveling 0-25 mph after stopping vehicle shutdown without any indications. Also, engine check light flashed. Dlr has been notified. Please provide further information.
On-going problem with vehicle vibrating in front, vibration would commence whenever taking off from a stop position or whenever transmission would shift gear. Vehicle has been in and out of the shop on five occasions,condition still unresolved. The check engine light also illuminated, had dealer check vehicle and found the cv solenoid, ftp sensor and the O2 monitor were bad.
