Nine problems related to engine stall have been reported for the 1997 Ford Explorer. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
: the contact stated the engine idled roughly. While sitting at a stop sign the vehicle idled erratically. While traveling around curves or down hills, at any speed, the engine felt as if it was going to stall. However, the engine has never completely stalled. The vehicle has been seen by the service dealer several times, but the problem could never be duplicated. Updated 06/07/2006.
4. 0liter sohc has defect in the design of timming chain idler . This caused engine to stall and severe valve damage . Ford is recomending complete engine replacement ( $4,800 ) with 2000 model. Ford is obviously aware of the defect but I was never notified.
Engine misses and stalls in various situations including highway speeds and from a stop. Dealer has been unable to repair after replacing ignition wires and vaccuum assembly. I consider this to be a very dangerous situation because of loss of power steering and brakes. It also causes the vehicle to act as if the brakes have been applied causing a stop from high speeds.
When starting cold engine races and gas pedal sticks, I live in florida so it doesn`t happen unless its 50 deg or less, engine also almost stalls, dealer could not find the problem.
Engine stalls sometimes when turning left after stop. Very dangerous in traffic. Taken in to multiple dealers who can never reproduce the failure. Stalling problem seems common among people with 4. 0 sohc engine (based on internet discussion). Truck was bought/registered under my wife's name: kathleen.
Engine stalls and almost quits entirely during acceleration. Most noticeable at speeds 50 - 55 mph. May be in conjuction with a slight turn of the left (during lane change on the freeway. ).
When engine is warm and vehicl is at a stop, driver attempts to accelerate hard to get into traffic the engine will stall or hesitate.
Engine stalls.
Ford was never able to determine cause of problem (engine cut out and or stalled upon moderate to hard acceleration, on most occasions from a stop) with vehicle after 5-6 repair attempts on parts listed above. Vehicle was replaced by Ford with a 1998 Explorer that turns out to be exhibiting the same problem that the 1997 Explorer did.
