My 1997 Ford Explorer has an intake manifold failure. I understand by reading many message boards and other complaints on the internet that Ford has recalled this item on some vehicles but not all. I really can't believe that Ford would actually use a plastic intake on anything. I believe it is a break down in judgement and Ford should be responsible for the replacement of this part.
Engine surging when cold. I have had the codes read and will not tell what the problem is. Poor gas mileage. Valves rattling when start up of engine for several secounds and then stops rattling. Black sutt in exhaust pipe.
Consumer was informed by dealer that the chain tensioner broke and the engine needed replaced, consumer had used engine put in vehicle, consumer received a letter (o00m12) extending the warranty on the camshaft chain tensioner (00m12) and lower intake manifold gaskets, if any repairs were performed because of a faulty camshaft chain prior to December of 2000, Ford would give a full reimbursement, the used engine that was installed has the same defect and consumer is requesting a new engine be installed plus refund of the used engine, Ford stated they would not replace the engine, only give reimbursement for the used engine.
Intake manifold and the exhaust gas sensors had to be replaced prematuraly.
Started vehicle in mornings, and it ran rough. Also, motor stalled. Contacted dealer. Dealer indicated that intake manifold gasket needed to be replaced. Was told by dealer that they were on national backorder.

Consumer is a victim of odometer fraud, encountering problems with the vehicle that's uncharacteristic for the mileage on the vehicle. (nar) exhaust system, ball joint, and instrument panel had to be replaced.
Drivers door lock not working properly, gasket cylinder front cover, torque converter shudder, catalytic converter, rt bank exhaust manifold; these problems have been corrected, but new ones mount every week. Now there is a problem with the steering, being checked tomorrow.
