Air Bag Light On problems of the 2002 Ford Explorer - part 1

I was on motion when the air bag light turn on but I went to check and they say I have to take to the dealer to repair.

The abs dash light comes on when you start the vehicle and stays on . The airbag light blinks 33 then stays on. There was a short in the trailer brake and alarm which caused the entire car to shut down would not start until battery cables were removed for a few minutes then vehical started but every time you close a door or any vibration the alarm goes off.

Rear wheel bearing and axle seals 100,000 miles. Other than that great car. If Ford cared about its customer it would have fixed the transmission problems they had six flaws from day one of production from 1990 ---- why Ford if you had a real transmission it would make up for all the other failure built into this car. You make great real trucks like the f150 other than that your entire fleet is junk.

The air bag light came on blinking for no reason and want go off! help please.

First of all the transmission is starting to slip. When accelerating the car transmission slips when shifting into third gear. Took to dealer and they said they need to repair the transmission. The second problem is that the airbag light came on. I have not been in a accident or anything. It just came on. I read online that if the light is on and I am in an accident the airbags wont deploy. This seems really dangerous and should be cover under warranty.

I was traveling in stop and go traffic. As soon as space opened between me and the vehicle in front of me, I accelerated. While gaining speed I looked in my right rear view mirror to see if I could change lanes. While looking in my mirror the vehicle in front of me stopped. I hit the back of his vehicle with the front of mine. The problem I have is that my airbag(s) fired but did no deploy. You could clearly smell that they fired and my airbag light is now on. My seat belt did not cinch up and restrain me either. This car had been well maintained and was never in an accident before this one. As I see it, it was a total failure of the srs.

While driving down the road my airbag light comes on. On occasion I am just thankful that my air bag has not gone off yet. Also while driving my door ajar light & dome lights come on.

We are now without the vehicle for 4 months, it is not repaired and Ford wants to replace all the air bag components because they do not know what happened or caused the air bag to deploy.

Updated 12/10/08 both of the rear springs broke and the rear axle bearing was bad. Updated 12/16/08.

Front passenger air bag light went on when my son sat in the seat. Took car to dealer to see if there was a problem. They said something was faulty. Extended warranty won't cover it. Isn't this required by law if it is a defect that the dealer fix it at no charge?.

I have a 2002 Ford Explorer. For the last 2 years the air bag light is coming on and off. Finally I took it for inspection and it didn't pass because the light was on and is a safety issue concern. I contacted Ford motor company and because there is no a recall they would not fix the problem, despide of all hundreds of complaints about the same issue. Probably waiting till someone die. . . Toyota is the best example of ignoring problems like this. . .

Had air bag light come on. It was a $44. 00 harness that the dealer had a service bulletin telling him of the problem. It cost me 247 dollars to get the vehicle back. I have talked to several other 2002 Explorer owners and they have had the same harness replaced at about 60000 miles. A complaint has been sent to the dealer for the labor charges which were or seemed excessive.

My husband and I own a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT. The problem is with the airbag. The airbag light has stayed lit and needed repairs on 2 occasions. The first time this occurred was a year ago. At that time, we took the car to a Ford dealership and were told the safety harness needed to be replaced and this was covered under the warranty. The airbag light has recently come on again. Again, we took the car to a Ford dealership and this time are told that another harness needs to be replaced and a wire under the seat is not working and the repairs (which are not under warranty) will cost approximately $370. I complained to the service manager that I feel I should not have to pay for these repairs as this problem occurred previously while under warranty and their previous repair should hold some guarantee. I was told this is not the case and that I would have to pay for these repairs. I find this completely unacceptable. I have no choice but to have the repair done as a non-functioning airbag is a serious safety concern. I am notifying the NHTSA and the consumer product safety commission of this serious safety issue that seems to be a recurring problem with my 2002 Ford Explorer.

Paint is blistering and chipping on the hood and fender of my 2002 Explorer. Abs light comes on and airbag light stays on.

On the Ford Explorers 2002-2003 there is a passenger restraint fault where the airbag light comes on indicating that the passenger restraint and or driver restraint srs system is at fault. This is concerning me simply because it appears to me that this could cause the air bag to deploy while I am driving.

2002 Ford Explorer, well serviced, less than 54000 miles on it. Last week airbag light came on, flashed, then stopped. It didn't come on again until this week. Took it to the torrance power Ford dealership & they told my husband that it was a faulty spring that was sliding & coming in contact with the cruise control wire & probably shorted out. Cost to fix, $467. 00, called the Ford CO & they said airbag system was not under warranty & that there were no recalls. Funny thing is, I am not the first person with a Ford Explorer that has had the same problem. We also asked if not serviced would the airbags deploy? they said they didn't know.

First of all I have a humming sound coming from the rear of the vehicle I notice it most when we are traveling on the hwy at at least 55 mph or more. In oct. My brake light came on for no reason and now in Feb. My air bag light came on for no apparent reason.

The service department determined both front seat belts needed to be replaced due to the integrated air bag/seat belt system. The entire front seat belts were replaced accordingly but the air bag light later illuminated. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer. The service department suggested replacing the seat belts again. Updated 3/3/2006 - the consumer has also had to replace the rear washer motor, odometer and has had problems with the automatic door locks.

Air bag light comes on frequently indicating the air bags are inoperable. The car has been repaired 5 times. Ford cannot repair the issue. The district and Ford corporate are non-committal.

Problems with the transmission, rear axle and seatbelts. (nar) transmission problem was found out to be a problem in the rear differential. Vehicle was serviced also for parking brake not locking in position. Also, consumer encountered a problem with right rear hatch guide for door pin coming apart, and trim on driver's seat bottom was coming loose. In addition, air bag light on dash kept coming on and stayed on.

My daughter was in a collision in 2003 in my 2002 Ford Explorer. I had it only a couple of weeks. The airbag didn't deploy, and now that it is 5 years later,the air bag light stays on,but I have not been in a crash. I took it to the local dealership in houston, but they were of no help!.

Airbag light was staying on. Dealership states they deactivated the airbag system as they indicate no repair is available at this time. The connector is getting moved around and the pins are being spread causing poor contact drivers side.

Car was on a family trip when abs light came on for no reason. Dealership can not get the light back on. Car was started in the morning and air bag light flashed and then stayed on and the dealership said it was due to a short. Day after it was in the shop for the air bag light the car would not start. Would not turn over. It will be in the shop again. For the third time in 6 months.

Air bag serviced 3x, but air bag light continued to illuminate. Dealer repaired a loose wire connection, deleted a code in history and repaired the passenger side wiring harness.
