Side/window Air Bag problems of the 2002 Ford Explorer

The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while the driver was driving at 40 mph, both driver and passenger side air bags deployed without impact. As a result, the vehicle failed to start. The driver sustained left arm injuries and the passenger sustained neck injuries but did not require medical attention. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was pushed by another vehicle to the contacts resident. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

On may 6, 2016 I was driving on interstate 5 between 55-60 mph in the middle lane of heavy traffic when suddenly there was an explosion inside my car. The right/left side airbags deployed without any warning. I was able to get to the shoulder and call aaa. I was towed to the landmark Ford service center.

While driving on paved highway(clear, dry day) a hissing sound was coming from the steering column. After making a left turn onto another paved highway, the hissing noise increased, then was followed immediately by the spontaneous deployment of the driver's side air bag, prior to any impact. The obstruction of the deployed airbag created a compromised or visionary impairment from my windshield's field of view, causing me to have impact with another vehicle. After impact of first vehicle, the passenger side airbag deployed. , then there was a secondary impact with another vehicle. In addition to the airbag braking my nose, two pieces of shrapnel were ejected from the inside of the deployed airbag, one hitting me in the left side mid chest/abdomen, the other to the distal portion of my left forearm. The projected shrapnel tore through a down coat, sweater and two shirts causing injury and 2nd degree burns to my chest/abdomen and forearm. The injuries of the other vehicles inhabitants are unknown at this time.

There was no malfunction. I have a Ford Explorer 2002. I want to know if the front drivers side and front passenger side airbags will work properly. I have searched this database but cannot find anything that is applicable. We (wife and myself) have only this vehicle and w we want to know if it is safe to drive. Please help.

The contact stated that while traveling 25 mph, the passenger attempted to secure their seatbelt when the driver and passenger side air bags deployed erroneously and without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was told that the air bags were no longer covered under warranty and provided no assistance. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign id number: 00v179000(air bags:side window) but was advised by the manufacturer that the recall was irrelevant to the 2002 model year Explorer. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 144,000.

The side curtain airbag spontaneously deployed upon side door closure of a Ford Explorer. The vehicle was sitting after re-fueling. Concurrent with and immediately prior to the deployment of the airbag, the door alarm system was chiming that a door was ajar, and after inspection by a mechanic it was determined that the security/door warning system module has failed. Ford was sent the airbag module for inspection, and has yet to provide the results of the module inspection - after a period of more than 5 months. Further problems persist with the electronic system. The door ajar alarm continues to sound at random intervals, the interior lights flicker on and off at random intervals, and the door locks repeatedly lock and unlock, all of which cause a distracting potential safety hazard while driving.

The vehicle became engulfed with chemicals and made a very loud sound that shocked the driver. There were no injuries. There were no warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel prior to the deployment. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and it was requested that the computer be removed from the vehicle. Ford could not offer a solution nor guarantee that the failure would not recur. The current and failure mileages were less than 120,000.

The contact feels that the Ford manufacturer should replace the air bags for free due to the failure being technical in nature. The current mileage was 80,544 and failure mileage was 80,400.

Both occupants were wearing seat belts however, after the deployment, the seat belts strap tightened. The contact pulled over and the seat belts released. Passenger side curtain airbag deployed upon closing rear door of vehicle. Vehicle was not in motion, nor was it parked near another vehicle. Dealership ran diagnostic, computer code indicated vehicle had been in an accident. Manufacturer initially declined repair via conversation with mechanic, after I pursued claim, was told by dealership that vehicle would be repaired and I would have an expense to do so of $300. I contacted svc manager for explanation of $300, told consumer always shares in expense of repair for out of warranty items. Contacted manufacturer again, asked for review as NHTSA website states safety issues should be addressed at no expense to vehicle owner. Yet to be resolved.

The air bags did not deploy on driver's or passenger's sides. This happened on August 5, 2005. Not contacted Ford.

Passenger's side door was slammed by the driver and passenger's side door air bag inadvertently went off. Driver took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, but a cause could not be determined.

My 2002 Ford Explorer front driver side airbag deployed when my wife started the car my 2 year old daughter was in the car also . We have a police report. My wife is terrified to get back in the car now. The people at Ford want to charge me to fix the car, which is crazy. I am trying to find out if this has been reported before.

When attempting to start the vehicle passenger's side air bag deployed, then exploded inadvertently. As a result, the steering wheel caught on fire. Vehicle remained in a garage where the incident occurred.

While placing the vehicle in drive the driver's side air bag deployed. Prior to the incident the air bag light had come on intermittently.

My daughter and I were involved in an auto accident in my 2002 Ford Explorer when another vehicle pulled out in front of us. I was traveling approximately 60 mph prior to slamming on my brakes. The ems driver estimated impact at 40 mph. My vehicle sustained $6600+ in damages to the front end. Neither the driver nor passenger side airbag deployed. The ems driver and the wrecker said given the damage to the front end of my vehicle the air bags should have deployed. The ems driver also said it was typical of a Ford to have the air bags malfunction. I sustained neck and low back injuries including damage to 4 disc in my spine according to the mri report. My daughter sustained injuries to her right shoulder, radiological testing is scheduled for later this month to determine the cause of her pain and loss of motion. She has also suffered with low back pain. I asked the mechanic responsible for the repairs on my vehicle at the dealership where I bought the vehicle about the air bags and was not given much of an answer. He basically said the damage did not go far enough into the engine area for the sensors to pick up the crash. Given the damage to my front end and the need for replacement of multiple parts under the hood of my car and the injuries sustained I did not find this to be an acceptable answer.

Consumer called complaining about side air bag problems. While driving the the drivers and passenger side impact air bags deployed without any type of impact on the road. Manufacturer was contacted and replaced the air bags under the vehicle's warranty. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer explained the cause of the the failure .
