Transmission don't work, gear slip after 10 minutes drive then stop working won't go back or foward.
My 2002 Ford Explorer 4. 6l is having major transmission problems at only 110k miles. It hesitates shifting gears and slips while driving. The vehicle also stalls when stopping at a red light or stop sign. It has the infamous crack down the back hatch. Both are problems thousands of customers have complained about yet Ford does nothing. The transmission problem is a very expensive cost to repair and it shouldn't be the customers responsibility when Ford knew there was a problem.
First of all the transmission is starting to slip. When accelerating the car transmission slips when shifting into third gear. Took to dealer and they said they need to repair the transmission. The second problem is that the airbag light came on. I have not been in a accident or anything. It just came on. I read online that if the light is on and I am in an accident the airbags wont deploy. This seems really dangerous and should be cover under warranty.
The transmission slips between first and second gear, the check engine light comes on. The code reads bad servo when read by the nh inspection station. Investigation on internet and through dealer inquiries states this is a very common problem with Explorer automatic transmissions in this manufacturing time period , everything and everyone states there should be a recall. This is a very well known problem by Ford for the 2002-2004 Explorer transmissions.
While pulling out from a stop sign the transmission was slipping causing the Explorer to barely pull out into a busy intersection in the path of oncoming traffic which had to stop to avoid hitting me. This was not the only time this has happened, and it happens with no warning.
I have a 2002 Ford Explorer and the over drive light started flashing and the check engine light is on and the transmission started slipping from 2-3 gear and I found out with my 2yr and 3yr kids in the car if I need to pull out on to a highway with cars coming the SUV don't want to do so and will rev up and might slam into gear when you let off the gas. I love my Explorer great family car but with this problem I will not have my kids in it at all. And not knowing if it will make it or not. Ford do something about this. Im not the only one.
The transmission started to slip in may of 2011. I had the transmission serviced and it did not correct the problem. I am unable to check the transmission fluid as it is a sealed unit no dip stick. We drove the vehicle until it no longer moves. The cost to replace the transmission is 2800. 00 plus. . . There was no reason why this should have happened.
2002 Ford Explorer-transmission failure-130,000 miles-July 12, 2011 transmission rebuilt at 119,000 miles on Jan. 13, 2010 by a local Ford dealer- both failures consisted of the transmission slipping in and out of gear during normal driving. In heavy traffic this is a very dangerous situation. The vehicle suddenly loses speed and passengers are subject to rear end impact or sudden surges of speed when the transmission slips back into gear, causing a possible rear end impact with another vehicle. In addition, the transmission sticks in one gear and will not shift. Ford motor company has been aware of the problems with this type of transmission since 2002. My local dealer says that fmc figures revealed that 30% of vehicles equiped with this tranmission experienced failure of some type. However fmc offerd very little relief to its customers. I believe that it is time for an immediate forced recall of this transmission.
Transmission failure in 2010, almost caused vehilce accident on the highway; was rebuilt in March 2011, but transmission is slipping again and it is now August 2011. I have been checking several different websites and I received 1 recall letter in the mail but happened to notice there is another recall. If all of these problems are continuing to happen, why is a recall on the entire truck not done? it is obviously a defective vehicle. I have 2 small children, one with a medical issue that has to travel for her doctor visits. These problems are getting out of hand. I can not believe it has gone this long and nothing has been done about it. There is also the issue with the non working air compressor and the bad electrical system as well as the roaring in the back tires. As much as I travel with my children and get from pount a to b, im suprised this thing has not fallen apart. I was a sucker for a pretty truck!!.
2002 Ford Explorer od light blinking transmission slips.
Transmission is slipping and needs to be replaced.
2002 Ford Explorer XLT (4. 0l 5r55w) transmission slippage causing near accident as unable to pass through intersection in a timely manner. When shifting between 1st and 2nd gear, transmission would wind before violently engaging. Remedy was to take foot of accelerator and allow rpms to decrease. Increased acceleration time in lower gears a danger when trying to cross lanes of traffic.
I have 2 issues with my 2002 Ford Explorer. . The first issue is with the transmission. I bought this last year and took it back to where I bought it 2 days later and they had the transmission shop they deal with look at it and was told there's nothing wrong. When I go to put it in drive or reverse the vehicle wont move. Once I start driving the transmission keeps slipping and when stopped at red light or stop sign I have to be very cautious because it wont go and wants to drift backwards and wants to stall and I don't want to cause an accident by drifting into someone. I have to deal with this everyday and it's getting old now. The second issue is the rear hatch/door. . Today I took notice that there is a crack right under the window where the rear Ford emblem is located.
Complete transmission failure. Slipping in-and-out of gear, failure to shift between gears, unable to stay at idle without shifting to park. Almost caused a collision when gear slip occurred in the middle of a major intersection.
The transmission started slipping and the "o/d off" started blinking. The transmission slipping has gotten progressively worse.
Owner of a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT and continually have the over drive off light flashing on the dashboard. Also the transmission slips and when I take it in to dealer they tell me that they can't do anything about this. I feel that this is a real safety issue and a national recall is in order. If you search the web you will find hundreds if not thousands of this exact same case. Please look into this ASAP!.
Transmission slips from second to third. Emailed Ford, they are not recalling the transmission even after hundreds of complaints.
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer. The contact was driving approximately 40 mph on normal road conditions. The "over drive" warning light illuminated. The transmission began to slip without warning with an increase in the rpm's. The transmission only shifted into the first and second gear. In addition, the transmission slipped unexpectedly into third gear. The driver pulled over to the side of the road. The engine was turned off. The vehicle was restarted and the over drive light reset. The vehicle was able to resume operation. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The technician recommended replacement of the transmission. The vehicle has not been repaired for the malfunction. The failure mileage was 110,000.
Sudden transmission failure on highway in heavy traffic. Transmission lost 2nd gear and started slipping, jerking causing us to obstruct an intersection with oncoming traffic on highway. Caused a near miss that could have resulted in a fatality. The 2002 Ford Explorer (v8) is parked in the driveway. I have scheduled a transmission replacement with a local shop. Ford won't do anything except charge me full price to replace a transmission. Knowing of inherent existing issues with these transmissions, they sold this used vehicle to my 18 year old daughter 4 months ago. Come already!.
I was driving down the highway and without warning my od off light started flicking and my car felt as if it slipped into neutral. I could not keep up to speed and my car started slowing down. I was very lucky to be in the right hand lane and could pull over to the side of the road without causing a major accident. I turned the car off and then back on and it was fine, the light was off and the gears worked as should. Around 40 miles later, I was off the main highway and at a stop light, as I accelerated, the od light started blinking again and shifting was hard, then again once I was up to speed it felt as if the gears slipped, I could not accelerate and the car slowed. What saved me this time was I was off the major highway and on a side country road with very little traffic. This happened October 10, 2009. The car has not yet been serviced as it was over the weekend this happened and today being a holiday, my kids are out of school, and I will not put their lives in danger to drive to the dealership. Like I said there was no warning to these events. I feel very lucky that I was able to avoid an accident.
Transmission slip when accelerating mostly when power is needed(passing another vehicle)forced to brake harshly two times while passing another vehicle. On occasion, truck feels like in neutral after stopping at a light for about 4-5 seconds. On occasion truck stalls when putting into drive. Transmission has a leak but always checked level and top up if needed.
2002 Ford Explorer XLT - transmission failure - purchased new in 9-02 with extended warranty. Original transmission failed and replaced at 65k miles by dealership under extended warranty. Replacement transmission began slipping at 130k miles. At 136k miles, transmission shifts at random, will not engage from stop.
2002 Ford Explorer(xls)one by one each wheel(bearing) hub had to be replaced!the wheels on my truck were actually about to fall off it was scary and very dangerous! it starts out with a squeaking sound like the brakes need to be replaced but no it wasn't the brakes which repairs and parts together range from $60 to $90 it was the wheel bearing which repairs and parts together range from $300 to $400!I had to get every wheel repaired one by one within 6 months so you do the math. Also my (od)light flickers and my transmission slips and jumps in to gear!!!.
2002 Ford Explorer with 140,000 highway miles. Bought brand new by owner in 2005, at 90,000 miles transmission was making loud clunking noises. Transmission fluid changed, but still clunking noises. Now at 140,000 miles the transmission is slipping and not going into 1st or second gear. I have been on numerous websites, and have seen thousands of complaints about this same exact problem with Ford's enclosed transmissions on their Explorers and other vehicles. This needs to be a recall due to the fact that it is a redesigned transmission and failing for thousands of Ford's customers. I owned a Jeep cherokee for ten years, and had over 350,000 miles on it, and never had a problem like this. Please understand that I am only one of thousands of consumers who has this problem. Our economy is nervous because our american car manufacturers are falling apart. This is the reason why.
My Ford Explorer transmission started slipping, it is starting to fail. It seem that this is a big problem with these vehicles, there should be a recall. There have been recalls for less.
Transmission slipped gears and "check transmission" message came up on dash. Bolt was loose inside of the transmission and pieces of metal throughout. This led to full transmission replacement and close to $3500 in repair bills at 64k miles.
I bought my 2002 Ford Explorer in 2005. At about 85000 miles I noticed the transmission started to slip and often jerks real hard when shifting into 3rd. I had the transmission fluid changed by an authorized Ford dealer in my area and they told me there are no metal shavings in the fluid, however, they did tell me that the 2002 Fords are well knows for having transmission problems and they see it all the time in this make model and year. I called Ford and they told me there are no recalls on the transmission, however, reading all the problems on the internet about owners who have complained, I feel there should be a recall on this because it is a safety issue!.
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer. While driving approximately 45 mph, the od sensor began blinking and the transmission slipped. The contact pulled the vehicle over and read the manual, which stated to immediately have the vehicle assessed for possible repair. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to a specialist and the transmission was rebuilt. The current and failure mileages were 85,000. Updated 07/08/08. Updated.
I own a 2002 Ford Explorer the transmission started slipping when it was shifting in to 3rd gear so a took it to the Ford dealership two days later they call me and tell me that I need a new transmission it would be around 3,300. 00 . Well I go on line to research and try to find a transmission come to find out theres hundred of people who own the 2002 Ford Explorer with the same thing happen to it I know things do wear out but its a little funny for it do be the same year and models and the same mileages I got it use and it had 90,000 miles on it but the transmission had been rebuilt already.
My 2002 Ford Explorer has been wonderful until my transmission started slipping it would run fine then jolt into gear out of no where then be running fine again. I was on my way to work the other day and out of no where my car stalls in drive I am pushing on the gas pedal and nothing no movement in rush hour traffic. I have my car towed to the transmission shop and bang you need a new transmission, I did not take my car to the shop the first couple of times because the issue was so few and far between, so I thought ok maybe transmission fluid or oil change did that everything was fine for about two months then I low and behold I am out 1000's of dollars for a new transmission. Then I decide to research my year, make, model vehicle and find out that I am not the only one who has to throw away money that I can not afford because Ford knew about the transmission problem all along. I have always bought Ford vehicles but I think that I might have to reconsider when I look for another vehicle unless Ford wants to do the right thing and recall this year transmission and reimburse those who were out money getting their vehicles fixed when Ford knew that their was a problem to beginning with. Thank goodness that I was stopped at a red light when my car stalled because I could have been rear ended and then I would be more upset than I am.
My 2002 Explorer transmission started slipping as shifting and putting in reverse and drive. This vehicle has 76000 miles on it. Took to the Ford garage, all test came out ok, tech stated I need a new transmission at a cost of 3500. 00. After doing some research and reading complaints of other Explorer owners, I feel this expense should be covered by Ford.
The noise was the indication of a problem, took the car in for noise coming from the wheels. Was told by Ford garage all four wheel bearings needed to be replaced I was very shocked. When Ford mechanic said this was a recurring problem and common in this year and model I was angry. Not soon after that the four wheel drive module went out and needed replaced. This car is five years old with at the time 82,000 miles on it. Now the transmission is slipping. Earlier we had to replace the automatic driver's window power motor which was also expensive. Had to replace rear axel bushings too.
Transmission started to slip with no warning and completely went out on my wife's way to work. This happened at 98,000 miles. Now there is a issue with the wheel bearings and also had to replace the four wheel drive module two years earlier.
2002 Ford Explorer "sealed" transmission failure. Regular maintenance performed, transmission began to slip when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear.
My 2002 Ford Explorer has been repaired for major transmission and rear end problems approx. 15 times in the past 3 years. The transmission continues to slip between 2nd-3rd and 3rd-4th gear. In reverse the clutch binds up. The rear end roars and was replaced at 35,000 miles (after numerous fix attempts) and at 66,000 miles rear wheel bearings, ring gear & pinion were replaced. The transmission was almost overhauled at 35,000, re-programmed approx 3 times and needs to be done again now. The compass has failed twice.
