39 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2006

2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4wd: I have had problems with my transmission on 5 occasions. Each time the transmission would shift really hard and thump. Ford fixed it and a few months later, the same problem. On the last occasion, I brought it in because it would stutter in 2nd gear like it was slipping (it felt like a stalling vehicle). Ford rebuilt the tranny and I got it 2 days later. It is now 3 days after the fix and it is doing it again. I will never buy another Ford as long as I live.

40 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 02/24/2006

I bought my 2002 Ford Explorer limited edition used with less than 47,000 miles on it. It was recommended that I have the transmission fluid changed which only the dealer can do. Since then 2nd gear would slip and my gas mileage dropped 5 mpg. The dealership said nothing was wrong. Now my used warranty is up and 2nd gear went out. They replaced 1, 2, and 3 bands, a drum, and a valve. I had it back 3 days and the same troubles. This time they readjusted the bands. I have back and mileage is dropped even more, at 30 mph it will not come out of 2nd gear and the engine sounds like it is really working, rpms are 2000 to 2200. The transmission feels like it is locking up or completely shifting as it should.

The transmission sometimes slipped when we first bought the vehicle new. We were told that was normal. The vehicle now will not lock into second gear, told we needed a new transmission. It is only 4 years old and has 58,000 miles; too soon for this kind of expense for a well cared for car. We are out of warranty.

46 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2005

Three months after purchasing my 02 Explorer, and at 39000 miles, the transmission began slipping just a bit. A week later, third gear could not engage at all, and I was forced to drive to the repair shop in second gear, with my hazard lights on, and with school-age children in the car. My repair person drove the car for about 15 seconds and knew immediately what the problem was. He knew because he had just fixed the same problem last month on an 02 Explorer with less miles than mine. He stated that Ford is aware of the problem, but with the advent of extended warranties, they would not stand behind their product. I did not purchase an extended warranty because who would expect that a transmission should be rebuilt at 39000 miles (incidentally 3000 miles past my warranty coverage). Luckily no one was injured because I parked the truck almost immediately. But now I am faced with the cost of rebuilding third gear into my truck, with no one accepting responsibilty for the defect.

47 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 03/22/2005

Gears began to slip at 59,000 miles on three year old vehicle. One day od light went off and transmission was completely burned up. We had given vehicle regular service. There was no warning up until the day the tranny went out. We took the vehicle to an outside source who concluded that the seal looked like it had never been broken on the transmission plug. This leads us to believe that Ford never even checked our fluid when we did take it in for service. This constitutes fraud in my opinion, although we have no proof.

48 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2005

The "o/d" light of my 2002 Ford Explorer lit up without warning while I was turning. Engine "revved" but didn't accelerate. Oncoming cars swerved to avoid me. This was an unsafe situation, as I expected the vehicle to function properly. I took the car to the dealer and was told the transmission had to be totally rebuilt, for $2,400, since I was 4000 mi out of warranty, even though <3 years. I asked the service manager if Ford would cover it. The zone person, advised no. I phoned customer assistance, and was told there were dealer/field discretionary funds to pay for repairs outside of warranty, but only for "loyal" customers. I was told that I should have purchased the vehicle new and had my maintenance done at the dealer. I asked what maintenance should been done on the transmission. I was told that there was none. I spoke with a gentleman in the quality department at a local transmission plant, who said this was a common failure, but that Ford wouldn't offer any help because "money is tight". He said that the bands in my transmission had been superceded twice due to this problem, and a tech bulletin existed, explaining this to dealerships. I read many other complaints on this website! I fail to understand why Ford honors a secret warranty for "loyal" customers yet offers no recourse for customers who were put in the same unsafe situation, just because they bought the vehicle used. I had the repair done at an independent repair facility. Ford advises they will not take any financial responsibility because the repair was done at an independent. I am one of many consumers who must drive in a defective and dangerous vehicle, due to this transmission problem. It failed me once without warning, I paid $1,200 for repair, and approach intersections with trepidation due to the possibility of my transmission unexpectedly slipping again. I would welcome contact at 248. 808. 1279 to discuss resolution of this dangerous issue.

49 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Consumer experienced a problem with the transmission on another Ford vehicle. Traded it in for a new vehicle. The newly purchased vehicle displayed the same symptoms as the previously owned vehicle. T he gears slipped when pressing the gas, then it engaged. The vehicle went from 50 mph to 30 mph.

50 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2004

I am the owner of 2002 Ford Explorer XLT. I placed the vehicle in park and exited the vehicle, I took items out of the back hatch and left the vehicle area. Within a 5 to 10 minute period of time, the vehicle's transmission slipped out of park and began rolling, the vehicle rolled down an embankment, flipped over on it's roof then landed on another vehicle parked down in the yard. The vehicle has been determined to be totalled. I am thankful that no one was in the vehicle at the time of this malfunction because they surely would have been seriously injured. I am very concerned that this transmission malfunction may occur to others who may not be so fortunate and injuries may occur.

Within four months from date of purchase my 2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4wd start having problems. They are: 1. Vibration inside including physical movement inside when driving with rear window crack over 30 mph. The faster you drive the grater the vibration. I took the Explorer to several dealers, they inform me that this is normal and it's refer to as helicopter effect. 2. The digital keypad stop working. 2. The keys don't open the door 3. The transmission slip, kick and delays when put in drive or reverse. 4. Transmission delays going into overdrive. 5. The passenger side quarter panel glass shatter twice, at first I taught someone had broke it and my son reported it to the police. The insurance company replace it and few months later in my garage it shatter again and that's when it all came together. This time my son fix it for me. 6. Theres also a winding some coming from under the SUV and my son thinks it have something to do with the diff, keeping the vibration in mind. 6. The latch that secure the rear where the jack handle is located broke.

55 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2002

Transmission slips when stopped at a intersection or stoplight. Sometimes the vehicle will stall. The dealer has stated they could notreproduce the problem during and after the warranty period. I have filed safety complaint with Ford motor company consumer relations and the dealer has attempted to repair without success. The delay in the transmission engaging is a safety hazard since the delay in pulling out into traffic could result in a serious accident. The problem is becoming more frequent, almost daily occurence.
