I was driving and my od light started flashing. A few miles later my cars rpms went up and my car slowed down, causing my to quickly pull over to the side of the road to avoid being rear ended. I tried to drive it to the store a few days later and I got about 1/4 of a mile down the road when I heard a loud noise and the car did the same thing. I have my car sitting in the drive way waiting to get it into be looked at. Since this is the second time that this has happened in under two years, I know that the transmission is having issues and more than likely I will have to have it replaced.
O/d drive flashing and check transmission light is on, very noise on the back of vehicle, the truck only 58,000 on it.
I own a 2002 Ford Explorer with 59,000 miles on it. My SUV has never been used for towing or unusual fast driving. The automatic transmission now randomly allows for unusually high rpms before changing gears. This resulted several times in rear wheel slipping and loss of control of the vehicle. When making a u-turn, the rear end of the car spun out into an unintended adjacent lane and nearly caused an accident. Also, a simple left turn onto a two lane road resulted in the rear end of the car going off of the road. The transmission is now making noises and changing gears slowly. From researching online, it is apparent that this issue has been reported thousands of times with the 2002 Ford Explorer. Estimated costs to repair design flaw range from $2700 to $4000.
2002 Ford Explorer v8 limited event leading to failure: loud grinding noise in trans. And lurching, slippage of gears. Failure: transmission needs replaced. Permanent failure. Could potential kill someone if lurches and hits car or pedestrian. No action done yet to costly.
My od light starting blinking. Then I started hearing a clicking noise. Car shuttered numerous days, then would not go any faster then 25 mph. Had to get the transmission completely rebuilt. Had 92,000 mile on it. Evidently Ford IA aware of this problem and will do nothing.
Indicator lights flashing on and off ,transmission rattling noise and failure at 99,000 miles.
Noticed a grinding and whining noise coming from right side of my 2002 Ford XLT Explorer. Also thought that I needed a new exhaust the car was making such loud noise. Went to 2 different garages for pricing, I needed both front and rear bearings replaced actually the front bearing was about to fall off both garages stated. Also the loud noise from my exhaust it was missing one bolt to the cover, covering the exhaust and or catalytic converter. Also 8months prior the cars transmission was replaced. All of this expensive and costly repairs happened at 79,000 miles. This is a very dangerous vehicle and reading all of the other complaints this problem needs to be considered for recalls from Ford. My family is very important to me and I use this car to travel and transport my family. I am very concerned and Fords needs to investigate the problems arising with the 2002 Ford XLT Explorer problems and fix them. So far I have invested $5500 into this car I would not even get this for a trade in value. Please consider my complaint and the many others very important. Thank you.
Transmission making a horrible whining noise in both the front and back. From all that I have read the transmission and rear end is going to have to be overhauled. With as many complaints as there are on this vehicle Ford really needs to do a recall and fix this problem before there is a serious accident. They are aware of this but choose not to do anything until the government forces them to do something.
Traveling on interstate when loud noise came from the transmission. Rpm's went up drastically. Tranny light came on. When starting and stopping the truck the transmission would make a horrible metal sound. Have not driven it for 1 month due to having to go get a loan to pay for the repairs. Took to aamco which stated today that the tranny needs to be totally overhauled at $2400.
The transmission in my 2002 Ford Explorer began to slip at 57,000 miles. From first gear into second it would rev high and then with a clunk and a grinding noise reluctantly go into second gear.
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer. While driving 50 mph, the contact noticed that the vehicle began to drastically decelerate. The vehicle would not exceed speeds of 20 mph. The vehicle was serviced, but she does not know what parts were repaired. The manufacturer stated that they would not reimburse her for the repairs. The powertrain was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 78,000.

The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the transmission was faulty. While driving 25 mph, the transmission began making a roaring noise. The vehicle would jerk badly in traffic and the contact would lose control. He called the local Ford dealer and they stated that the repair would cost $5,000 because the warranty expired. Ford also stated that there were no recalls on the vehicle. He took the vehicle to a transmission specialist to have it rebuilt for $3,100. The specialist stated that imperial parts did not manufacture the transmission correctly. The current and failure mileages were 97,000.
Car started making humming noise when going 30-45 mph, took to a mechanic who ref me to the dealership to check the transmission and then for transmission flush, still the same issue, I was advised that the tires needed to be replaced, I have 4x4 which requires the same 4 tires or the car will jerk. The brake pedal vibrates, and the 4x4 gauge doesn't work, replaced the component and still the same issue. Any who to make a long story short, now I am hearing a clinking and rubbery sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. I am now forced to take the car in. . . And of course be charged a ridiculous fee, for them to run diagnostics on the truck to diagnose the issue, and then of course pay for parts and labor. . . . My next car will be a foreign car. . They break down less, and the cost of maintenance and equivalent or less then the cost of maintaining a good ole' american made Ford vehicle. (Lexus, kia, and I believe either Mazda or Toyota are owned by Ford. . So steer clear of those brands). Timeline reflects the latest issue, and the amount of previous problems. . Amount to many.
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer. While driving 40 mph on the highway, the contact was accelerating and heard a loud noise and the engine began to idle. The contact was thrown forward into the steering wheel causing the driver to steer to the right. The failure mileage was 31,350. The dealer stated that the third gear bang or the transmission needed to be replaced. The current mileage was 61,350.
My transmission on my 2002 Explorer is slipping from 2nd to 3rd and making a hissing noise. I understand there has been alot of complaints on these trucks. I want it fixed or replaced. I hope there is a recall on this automobile from Ford.
On January 16, 2006 while driving on the highway I noticed a shaking feeling under the driver's side floor. There was also loud noise. I slowed down and continued to drive. On Saturday, January 21, 2006 I brought Ford Explorer 2002 to a Ford dealer for them to drive and take a look. The result was vehicle all over the road, was unstable and needed all 4 wheel bearings, upper rear ball joints. Replaced. Not safe to drive for very long, must go slow and a $3,000 approximate cost to repair. I contacted Ford to complain and to see if they could help out by reducing the cost of fixing it for free. Their response was sorry but they could not help. I cannot see how Ford can tell me there was nothing they could do when every mechanic I have spoken to said it was unheard for all 4 wheel bearings to go at the same time, especially with only 73,000 miles on the truck. I drive my 6 year old sun to school, left to Ford I'm supposed to take my chances with his safety while driving one of their poorly made vehicles. All this after I had to replace the transmission in October when than went while I was on vacation in new hampshire.
Transmission failure and rear axle noises as well as rear wheel bearings.
I brought this SUV last year at bill heard Chevrolet dealership. Even though this was a new vehicle. When I went to the dealership they told me that I could pay this car in three years but in reality it was five years. I signed all the paperwork I had to but they didn't give me any papers when I left. However when I went to apply to buy another car they didn't accept my application because they told me that I was already being finance a car for five years. This car has had many problems like the transmission would just make really loud noises when I drove the SUV; the transmission was simply not functioning properly. When I drove the car 60 mph or more the vehicle would just start vibrating. I contact the dealership to make a complaint but they simply just ignore my complaint.
Transmission will not go into reverse, and there is no neutral. There is only 57,000 miles on the vehicle. The vehicle has had regular maintenance and checkups. Transmission was making clanking noise when put into drive or reverse. Vehicle has been making noise since 2002. It was taken to the dealership, and it was checked. Dealership did not find a problem with the transmission. Vehicle was put in reverse, and it started jumping. Then it went and stopped in reverse. Then, vehicle was put in park and t switched to reverse. There was no reverse. It was put into neutral, and it went forward. When the vehicle was put into drive, it would go forward.
Transmission and rear-end. Sealed transmission was serviced at dealership at 29,000 miles. Since then transmission has a whirr and then a clunk while decelerating back into first gear. Whining noise from rear-end since 12,000 miles. Ford replaced faulty rear-end seal 6 months ago, whining still there. I feel that Ford is stringing me along until warranty expires. Ford knows there are problems but wont fix until part fails completely.
2002 4 door Explorer 4x4 eddie bauer transmission replaced at 40,000 miles now the rear end has a humming noise at 50,000 miles.
I was driving, when I heard a loud noise comming from underneath my Ford Explorer. I thought for a second or two, that I had ran over something in the street. The vehicle, slowed. When I stopped for the traffic light,it would not move. The od off light was flashing. The only way I could move the truck was in neutral. I had the truck towed to joe rizza Ford in n. Riverside,IL. They told me that the transmission had to be replaced. I purchased this truck from rizza new on 09/11/01. 59,000 miles was on the spedometer. I believe the transmission was defective. I was told it would cost me $3,400. 00 to get it replaced. I had no choice but to go further in debt and buy another vehicle.
My truck worked fine for the first 18000 miles I have had it and now it has almost 45000 miles on it. When the truck tries to change gears from second to third the transmission makes a clunk noise and then the rest of the time it changes gears fine. The noise just happens between second to third gear.
I pulled up into the drive and put the car into park. I exited my 2002 Ford Explorer and opened the back door, unstrapped my grandson from his safety seat. He went into the house to get a game boy so I re-entered the front seat to wait for him. I sat there a few minutes and when he came out of the house, I was exiting my 2002 Ford Explorer when I heard a noise. The car engaged itself into reverse. I tried to place my right foot back into the car and press on the brake, but the door knocked me down. I went under the drivers door and the front left tire began to run over me. I grabbed the underneath of the door and tried to hang on but the tire was running over my pelvic and my left leg. The car drug me on the concrete , then it stopped. I was pinned under the front driver's tire. Before this injury,I had problems with this car at 26,000 miles sent it for repairs but the dealer kept telling me it was ok. The car would jerk during take off and hesitate when placed in reverse. After the accident I took it to other dealers and finally one put it on the test rack and told me it had transmission problems. Not sure what Ford has done with the parts.
The caller said vehicle had problems with the transmission. In September 2002 at 4775 miles when trying to accelerate the vehicle made noise and would not accelerate. In November 2003 at 34,114 miles the lights on the dashboard came on. She could smell something. Both times she was told nothing could be found. Currently, all the lights on the dashboard came on again. While getting on the highway the vehicle lost power and would only go 20 mph. Dealer told her the transmission needed to be replaced, and the caller would have to pay for it.
Consumer hears clicking noise in transmission. Also, vehicle jerks.
