There was no indication that there was a problem, the vehicle suddenly stopped shifting correctly, started making bad noises, won't shift out of second gear, and the overdrive light is flashing spastically. The vehicle is almost undriveable, and this appears to be a systemic problem from what I have read. I am about to take it into a transmission shop for diagnosis.
2002 Ford Explorer transmission jumped when put in reverse hit a parked car. When you slow down it slips out of gear and wont go. I have transmission problems with the vehicle. Im scared that it will fail again while on the freeway and my family and I will be hurt or even killed. Its not safe to drive.
Ford Explorer would not shift out of 2nd gear. The vehicle is a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT with 4. 0 l v-6, and automatic transmission. Took in to my mechanic and he advised me to take it to a transmission shop since the readout fault codes indicated major failure. Vehicle has less than 80,000 miles and has been well taken care of since it was new.
2002 Ford Explorer transmission continues to need repair. I've rebuilt the transmission twice and it has gone out again. It began with the o/d light flashing, then, without warning, it slips out of gear, never to return. I spend about $2,000 with each rebuild. I can no longer afford the cost. Having read the voluminous reports of the identical failure, I believe it's time for a recall by Ford!.
2002 Ford Explorer automatic transmission problems. Various problems. When I first got it (at 45k miles), it would take about 20-30 seconds to engage into first gear after being in reverse. When it did engage, it jumped forward while doing it. That does not happen much anymore. If I have to slam on the brakes (dog, kid, deer runs out, light suddenly changes or someone cuts me off, etc. . . ) the tranny slips out of gear into neutral stays there for an indefinite amount of time, then lurches forward 3-4 feet as it kicks back into gear. This has not caused an accident yet! have seen a dealer for both of these problems - 3 times. Was not able to even get the problem diagnosed, much less repaired. As time has passed, I have learned to be careful and ginger with the vehicle. I shift softly and slowly, I don't gun it and do my best to ensure there is plenty of room between me and the car in front of me. Now the transmission has begun slipping. I have seen multiple accounts online of people having transmission problems with the 02 Explorer. I firmly believe Ford needs to issue a recall. The lurching forward problem is huge! very dangerous! today it was scary. I was approaching a crosswalk and only doing 25. Hikers and bikers notoriously just walk/ride through the crosswalk without looking. There is brush that blocks the view of bikes in one direction. Today, a bike made no effort to stop to look for cars and bolted out into the crosswalk. I did not see him coming for the brush. I had to slam on the brakes. As he was in front of me, he caught some gravel and slid and fell in front of my car. My car lurched forward nearly hitting him. I can't get the problem fixed if the dealer can't figure out what is wrong. Short of having the transmission completely rebuilt. . . Which is what I am going to do. I really feel that Ford should be responsible for the cost of doing so.
2002 Ford Explorer. Shortly after I bought my Explorer after about 40,000 miles on the odometer I began to experience slipping of the transmission every time I drive it. The slipping out of gear happens at all times when I accelerate at speeds under 50 mph. What is dangerous about this is when it happens at a time that I want to get into traffic while crossing the oncoming traffic lane and the transmission won't go back into gear to allow me to complete the road crossing while cars have to apply their brakes to stop for me. When the transmission finally goes into gear, it does so with a big clank. I have personally met a number of people who own this same type of vehicle and every single on complains of the same symptoms and have had close calls in traffic due to this transmission failure. Some of these people have had the transmission worked on and have paid anywhere from $1700. 00 to over $2500. 00 for repairs and the problems return. I have done searches on the web regarding this problem and in every site that has blogs dedicated to people who are victims of this problem, there are literally hundreds of complaints. From what I've heard this was an experimental transmission that was bought by Ford from an outside manufacturer, in order for Ford to save money and now we, the consumer have to pay for this problem. I feel that it is negligent and irresponsible of Ford to allow people to drive their vehicles with this type of dangerous transmissions. People can cause accidents and injure passengers or cause pedestrians to be hurt or killed due to this problem. Please, please look into this matter and consider declaring a recall of this transmission. Please don't wait for people to get hurt before doing something about this serious problem. Thank you for your attention.
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer. When he attempted to turn the ignition switch, the steering column fractured. Secondly, the rear lift-gates panel split in half. Thirdly, the transmission intermittently slipped out of gear. None of the failures have been remedied. He previously filed a complaint. The failure and current mileages were 80,000.
I am having the same problems all the other people are having that own a 2002 Explorer. O/d off light flashing, service engine soon light on, car slips out of gear if you have to stop suddenly, hard to put into park, erratic shifting. Please make Ford recall these vehicles and fix the problems that they knew about but sold the vehicles anyway. Do this before someone has to die in a wreck because then it will be too late!.
2002 Ford Explorer 4. 0l sohc v6 automatic transmission. It has a problem shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. While driving in traffic, car will not accel up to speed and doesn't shift out of 2nd gear into 3rd. Have had a few near accidents because of car not able to speed up.
Shortly after purchasing our 2002 Ford Explorer xls, we began experiencing delayed shifting on occasion. The problem continued to get worse until occasionally, after making a turn, it would slip out of gear impeding acceleration in traffic situations. It also hesitates going into gear after backing up out of parking spaces. This almost caused us to be hit from behind one day when another driver backed out of a parking spot behind us without looking. Luckily it went into gear just in time so that I could move the vehicle back into the parking space and out of the way. Eventually the o/d light began to flash and now the transmission slams into high gear and downshifts hard when coming to a stop. My concern is that this in not an isolated problem with just our Explorer as I have read numerous reports of the exact problems. Not being able to move the vehicle in traffic poses a serious safety concern that needs to be corrected.
I have a 2002 Ford Explorer limited that had an automatic transmission failure at 51,000 miles. The transmission is sealed and does not have a dipstick to check fluid levels, therefore making it non-serviceable by the owner. This transmission appears to have an inherent design flaw resulting in premature failure. The check transmission light appeared on the dash and the transmission started slipping when attempting to change gears while driving. This created a hazardous condition because the transmission would slip out of gear while driving causing the engine to rev extremely high. The transmission had to be replaced by a local Ford dealer at a cost of over $3,500.
Transmission failed without warning at 128,000 miles. Car would not shift out of first gear properly. $3500 to replace at dealer.
My 2002 Ford Explorer had been making an electronic dinging sound that typically is to bring the drivers attention to the display screen, but no message was displayed, for about a week. Then on the morning of 3/12/08 the transmission started slipping out of third gear. We took the car to Ford first and they didn't say anything, but when I took it to aamco, they told me that my car was the third this week with the same exact issue, and that the real issue was a design flaw with the transmission since all three cars had mileage under 100,000 miles. The cost to rebuild the transmission was quoted at $2,500.
2002 Ford Explorer XLT, car will not shift out of 2nd gear. Over drive off light flashes and shifting stalls. No replacement has happened yet, but seems like everyone else who has had this happen to them needed a transmission rebuild. I don't have the money to shell out for a rebuild. Also 5 months after purchasing the car, I had to replace the rear ball baring hubs and bearings. The total cost was 1,000 dollars usd. We need Ford to recall the transmission.
Transmission failure on 2002 Ford Explorer in 2007 at 88,000 miles and 2010 at 140,000 miles. First time od light came on, I drove it home 3 miles and then was not driveable. Second time no warning or light and it slipped out of gear as I was crossing the boulevard. Original transmission and replacement transmission are not quality and failed. First time I was on the freeway and able to coast home and the second time crossing a boulevard when it slipped out of gear. It's as if Ford put on disposable parts for consumers to replacement every several years conveniently after warranty expires. I spent over $5,600 the first time and over $3,400 the second time.
Transmission failure on 2002 Ford Explorer at 50,000 miles. Transmission jumps out of gear randomly, almost causing collision.
While driving the SUV to work on 11 Jan 2006 @0800 on the interstate, everything was operating normally then suddenly the overdrive light began to flash and the transmission began to slip and would not shift out of 2nd gear, with no prior warning light to this day or malfunctions. @ 0900 I took the SUV to a local near by transmission shop where they deemed after driving and running diagnostic testing that it needed to be rebuilt, they further stated that they have had several 2002 Ford Explorers with the same problem. After tearing the transmission apart further inspection revealed that it was in need of a total overhaul costing $2079. 00. The SUV is a 2002 Ford Explorer eddie bauer with 64,000 miles .
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that she had issues shifting gears and when she would turn corners, the vehicle would shift out of gear. Other times, she had issues shifting into drive and moving forward. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that there were no related recalls. The transmission was replaced in 2008 at a repair shop. However, the failure continued. When the contact placed the vehicle in park (with the engine on) and went into a store, the vehicle shifted into drive and hit a building and then moved back and hit another vehicle. There were no injuries. A police report was filed. The vehicle was taken back to a repair shop where the contact was informed that a component of the steering column would not allow the vehicle to lock into gear. The steering column was repaired. However, after the repair, the transmission slipped. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been notified. The current mileage was approximately 140,000. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
While shifting into third gear vehicle slipped and it felt like the transmission was in neutral. Transmission down shifted on its own. Consumer took vehicle to dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that transmission needed to be replaced due to shaft sensor. Consumer informed the mechanic that this problem occurred more than once, and had not been resolved. The consumer stated that the transmission is slipping out of gear.
Auto-transmission started out with delayed engagement in to reverse and hard shifts 25-30 mph. Started to slip out of drive with no power to the wheels. This happen several times, once when pulling out across traffic and could have caused an accident. Repairs are estimated to exceed $2500.
On 3 separate occasions transmission slipped and jumped out of gear. Dealership changed several parts in the transmission. The consumer was not sure what parts were replaced.
