I have a 2002 Ford Explorer. Rear end hums and vibrates. The transmission was shifting hard from 2nd to 3rd and made a jerking motion around 40-45 mph. The transmission now has the over drive light flashing and is stuck in gear. It will not shift. Looking online for a remedy, I have noticed that this is a major problem among thousands of Explorer owners. Just try it out yourselves, google 2002 Ford Explorer. . . Very 1st hit is page after page of how terrible this vehicle and its transmission is. Now I am making payments on a vehicle that is sitting in my driveway and is inoperable due to Fords lack of concern about its product. They were quick to sell this vehicle! quick to take a multi million dollar bail out! take some of the bail out money and fix their product!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Gear shift lever snapped off in the hand of my 110 lb girlfriend. She put her foot on the brake, went to shift the car into reverse and the part that connects the gear shift to the steering column broke off. The car was on and luckily did not make it all the way into reverse or the car would have been stuck in reverse!! she quickly turned the car off, but the transmission is not in park either, so the key won't come out! I have 2 small children and my neighbors have little ones as well. This is a dangerous safety issue. The car is not completely in any gear and the key is in it. It can't be driven so I had it towed, and like many, many others have found out, this small, cheaply made part is not available to replace. The entire steering column must be purchased through Ford and replaced. I was given a "discounted" quote of $1900 from berge Ford in az. How has this small, weak, cheaply made part not been recalled yet? are we waiting for someone to be run over and possibly killed by a vehicle stuck in gear?!.
Gear shift lever broke off. While parking my 2002 Ford Explorer, the gear shift lever sheared off in the steering column, leaving the vehicle stuck in reverse gear. A quick search with google reveals a significant number of identical failures, indicating a common manufacturing defect. Ford have not issued any form of recall or other assistance for this problem. Had the failure happened while driving (perhaps while shifting up or down on a mountain road) it could have caused an accident. Given the age of the affected 2002 model vehicles, it is only a matter of time until this does occur. My vehicle has not yet been repaired; the broken part is currently available for inspection.
Driver noticed while shifting the transmission forward or backward the gears are hard and a loud knocking noise started coming from the front. Driver took the vehicle to the dealer, and mechanic determined that the vehicle has to be placed on a diagnostic machine for analysis. This particular problem has been on going since the warranty expired. The gear shifter became stuck in reverse gear unless it was pulled firmly towards the driver.
Windshield, water leaking from the front windshield on my 02 Ford Explorer XLT, besides that having problems shifting gears, some times gears get stuck in between park and reverse. Sometimes I hear a loud popping sound when gears finally go into reverse. . . . Have had both problems checked and repaired, but gears continue to stick.
Vehicle was in an accident. While driving gears would become stuck when changing from park to reverse. Please provide any further information.
