36 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2009

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that whenever the vehicle was shifted into reverse, it would jolt back extremely hard. The failure almost caused the contact to sustain a whiplash. The failure occurred nearly every time she shifted into reverse. The dealer stated that the automatic transmission needed to be reprogrammed. She planned to the vehicle repaired in the latter part of June 2009. The manufacturer advised her to call NHTSA and file a complaint. The current mileage was 78,244 and failure mileage was approximately 75,000.

37 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/07/2009

I took my wife's Explorer to the dealership and described the issue with the vehicle popping into gear late, or delaying before it goes into gear. I can even feel it when it changes gears when driving. Sometimes more sudden than other times. They said they knew exactly what it is. . . . So they kept my car for 6 hours to tell me that I owed them $89 for telling me what's wrong, and then told me its $1,300 to fix it. They said sorry about your luck, no recall yet, so you have to pay for it yourself. I would be happy to pursue this further. . . This is dangerous, and should be addressed by Ford before people are hurt.

38 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2009

The transmission on my Ford Explorer jerk the car forward when the truck is stopped. Feels as if someone hit the back of the truck after it is stopped. This occurs almost everytime the truck is stopped. I have taken it to the Ford dealer multiple times. Each time the act as if they have never heard of such a problem. The tell me they will reprogram the transmission. This does not solve problem. They told me there is nothing else they can do. The Ford dealer told me that this is the way it was designed and as of today will not take any action to correct the problem, as they state there is nothing they can do.

39 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2008

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Explorer. The vehicle was purchased with 10,000 miles. When the vehicle comes to a complete stop, there is a kick in the transmission as if the vehicle had been rear ended. The contact has taken the vehicle to the dealer three times for repair. They reprogrammed the computer for the timing in the transmission; however, the failure persisted. The dealer blamed the contact's driving as the reason for the failure. The failure worsens in cold weather. The failure mileage was 30,000.

40 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/18/2008

My 06 Explorer has been lurching extremely hard from 1st to 2nd and vice versa. Its to the point that when stopping, I am coming literally within an inch of hitting another car. The SUV stops and then lurches forward. I am seriously concerned about the safety of my family and the safety of others while driving my SUV. The website carcomplaints. Com shows there are 73 other complaints about the same exact problem with the 2006 Explorer models. Ford is not taking any procedures into getting the vehicles recalled. I don't feel safe driving my truck; I don't understand why there isn't a recall. The trucks are still considered very new and yet they are lurching and having a huge transmission problem. When I took my truck to the Ford dealer, they told me there is no problem, everything is was fine! something has got to be done to get these trucks off the road. We are driving hazards just waiting to cause an accident!! I feel that it will take another incident (like the firestone tire one) before Ford will come out and do something!!! my truck is jolting worse than ever and I am seriously concerned.

41 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2008

When coming to a stop the transmission will bang into gear and it feels like you are getting hit from behind. Also have had bucking and the transmission shifts up and down and slips. Was told the bucking and slipping is due to a lean reading in the computer. Told to change spark plugs. Took it to a mechanic and three of the eight plugs broke off as they were trying to take them out. The spark pug are made by motorcraft which is Ford. They had to buy a kit to extract them and it cost an additional $300. 00 to change eight plugs which I had already purchased at a cost of $68. 00. It didn't fix the erratic shifting at first. Still shifts very hard from 1st to second and acted up shortly after getting it back.

42 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2007

My 2006 Ford Explorer has transmission problems that cause it to lunge forward when stopping which Ford says they are aware of but cannot seem to find the propper remedy for. This is a very dangerous malfunction that could cause me to run into other stopped vehicles. I have brought the truck in three times to get the problem fixed with no improvement with the condition.

43 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/25/2007

On several occasions when shifting into reverse the vehicle was extremely hesitant & eventually would lunge backwards while making a loud "clack" as it jumped into gear. Another time I started my car & it lunged into park as if it was never in park completely before I shut off and exited the vehicle prior to this. We all know you cant take the keys out of the ignition w/o it being in park,so explain this! after numerous complaints to my dealership they find a problem(a factory defect, not one caused by me)they replaced parts and now only a few months later I am having the same problems all over again. Only now my problems are worse. While driving instead of shifting my car just revs real high & goes nowhere. This lasts anywhere from 15-45 seconds & then stops. It also is hesitant when shifting from gear to gear. I have my car serviced regularly and dont drve it hard,I should not be experiencing these problems at all!!! I am a very, very unhappy Ford owner. I paid $38,000 cash for this vehicle the day I bought it & have had nothing but problems since, only regrets.

44 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2007

When coming to a stop vehicle jolts and lunges forward.

45 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2007

My Ford 2006 Explorer limited jolts almost every time I come to a stop. I have taken it to the dealer to get reprogrammed, but the problem still exist. The valve box in this particular vehicle is defective and needs to be repaired under a recall.

46 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2007

The transmission of the 2006 Explorer eb that I purchased from vista Ford, has had ongoing intermittent shifting inconsistencies from the day I purchased it that cause the cars transmission to frequently kick and have a startling and car-shaking bump or thunk? when braking just before the vehicle comes to a stop. Sometimes when it does not occur at all. Mostly, it occurs in various degrees from subtly to strongly (on a scale of 1 to 10). Sometimes it occurs so strongly that the entire car noticeably and violently shudders or lurches, and the car jumps forward as it stops. I have to be careful how close I am to the intersection or to the bumper of the car in front of me in case it does this, potentially causing a hazardous situation or accident. The car has also developed a similar shifting inconsistency upon acceleration from a standstill as it shifts (presumably) into second gear. Sometimes it is such a severe jolt that my head snaps back and hits the headrest of the seat. The dealership has attempted unsuccessfully on four occasions to correct this defective behavior. The dealership has reprogrammed the computer program for the transmission with two separate fixes which have had absolutely no affect to correct the problem. These problems occur with such frequency that I feel unsafe in the vehicle, and I don't feel secure when driving it due to the inconsistent and erratic behavior of the transmission. I think that the vehicle is mechanically unsound, as a result and that the transmission is likely to fail altogether at some point, or possibly cause an accident caused by the sudden acceleration.

47 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2007

My 06 Explorer has been lurching extremely hard from 1st to 2nd and vice versa. Its to the point that when stopping I am coming literally within an inch of hitting another car b/c the car stops and then lurches forward. My car is also revving up for no reason at around 3000-4000 rpm when I don't even push on the gas, or barely tap it! I am seriously concerned about the safety of myself and the safety of others while driving my SUV. I came across this website today: carcomplaints. Com and found that there were 66 other complaints about the same exact problem with the 2006 Explorer models. Ford is not taking any procedures into getting the vehicles recalled. I don't feel safe driving my truck, I don't understand why there isn't a recall. The trucks are still considered very new and yet they are lurching and having a huge transmission problem. When I took my truck to the Ford dealer in miami, FL they told me it was a brake problem and replaced my brakes, yet when I pulled out of the parking lot the problem was not fixed! that was in Nov 2007. I am now stationed in anchorage alaska at elmendorf afb and have made an appt with the Ford dealer here on Monday. From what I have read there is no permanent fix out there for this problem, everything is temporary. Something has got to be done to get these trucks off the road. Obviously we are all driving hazards waiting to happen!! my truck is jolting worse than ever and I am seriously concerned.

48 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2007

Transmission surges on downshift between 2nd and 1st. . . . Engine rpm's increase and transmission slams, causing vehicle to move forward with a lurch. I have taken the vehicle to the dealership twice to no avail.

49 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2007

Transmission surges on downshift between 2nd and 1st. . . . Engine rpm's increase and transmission slams, causing vehicle to move forward with a lurch. Ford motor has no fix for this and there are hundreds of these flawed vehicles on the road with no owner recourse due to fact that Ford engineer does no know what to do.

50 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2007

Transmission surges on downshift between 2nd and 1st. . . . Engine rpm's increase and transmission slams, causing vehicle to move forward with a lurch. Also I have difficult time shifting into drive or reverse. It seems that the sensor for the brake is malfunctioning.

51 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2007

Our 2006 eddie bauer v-8 automatic transmission has approx 6k miles on it and since the very first day there has been a hesitation when shifting. From park to reverse and from reverse into drive. There is a significant lag time from engaging the transmission to movement and is usually associated with a rather large "clunk". This is out 4th Explorer and enjoy the styling but am very concerned about this obvious engineering flaw. It appears Ford is aware of it but has no "fix".

52 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2006

My 2006 Ford Explorer frequently lurches/lunges when coming to a stop and starting up from a stop. It feels like the car is being rear-ended.

53 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/21/2006

Our 2006 4. 6, v8 6 speed transmission Explorer has been in five time for repairs to the transmission starting at just over 900 mile to now with 2400 miles. We have experienced serious shifting problems with the transmission. These have ranged from delayed 1-2 and or 2-3 shift, high rev, delayed shift with hard down shift and severe jerking. This resulted in three days of back pain. They have reprogrammed the transmission, replaced the valve assembly and the complete transmission and we are still having problems.

54 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/02/2006

I feel my 2006 4. 6,v8, XLT Explorer is unsafe because of the transmission hesitation when accelerating from a stop. You try to judge distance to pull out on a street and when you step on the gas it doesn't go! it has a pause and then goes. The dealer has 'recalibrated' the computer and transmission response three times now! the date included is the last time it was done.

55 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2006

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Explorer. While idling at a traffic light, the transmission shifted to first gear and caused the vehicle to surge forward. While driving downhill at 20 mph, the transmission downshifted to first gear and the speed decreased to 5 mph in 2-5 seconds. The dealer replaced the mechatronix, however, the failure continued. The failure mileage was 200 and current mileage was 12,500.

56 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2006

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Explorer. The transmission is not downshifting correctly. While approaching a stop or driving between 1 and 10 mph, the vehicle jumped. The vehicle has been taken to the dealer on three occasions: September 22, 2006, October 9, 2006, and September 14, 2007. On each visit, the dealer performed a transmission update that only repaired the vehicle for a brief period of time. It is currently October 2007 and the vehicle needs to go back to the dealer for the same failure. The current mileage was 20,000 and failure mileage was 4,700.

57 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2006

This is a new 2006 v8 6 speed Ford Explorer which has had serious problems with the transmission since I purchased it on Dec 10, 2005. I have taken it to the original dealer sheehy Ford of gaithersburg MD five times and they have not been able to fix the problem. This past Friday at an intersection I stepped on the accelerator and the vehicle would not move so I pressed harder and it was if it skipped a gear and then the car jerked forward at a higher then normal speed and I almost lost control of the vehicle.

58 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/05/2006

This transmission exhibits a hard shift at near 0 mph when pressing the brakes to slow to a stop, to the point that the vehicle lurches forward approximately one foot and could if you are not hard on the brake, there is a possibility of striking close objects, other vehicles or persons. This is an ongoing problem that is unpredictable, repeatable and very frightening. Fords response is that they do not recognize this as a problem and have no fix for these symptoms. This problem did not exist until the vehicle had approximately 4000 miles and it has become worse with time.

59 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2006

Consistent problems with transmission shifting roughly, hesitation at cold start, and during slow take-offs and slowing down.

60 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2006

2006 Ford Explorer. Has been to the shop three times for transmission trouble. Took the mechanic for a ride to be sure he felt the problem. He agreed that there was definitely a problem with the shifting. The car jumps into 2nd gear causing the car to lurch forward. Reprogrammed the computer car was better for two days then it resumed its problem again. Ford dealer had car for two weeks this time again said they could not find a problem. Paid 40,000 + for this car. Something needs to be done.

61 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2006

Terrible hesitation when pulling up to stop sign and trying to take off. Parking lot at slow speed transmission will not shift correctly. Lifter stuck in motor at 700 miles. Nothing done to correct issue as of yet.

62 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/29/2006

Consumer complaint: odi case number: 10185415 in follow-up to the above case, I have been reading the subsequent complaints and read with disgust that alot of those people writing now bought the 2006 Explorer as used. We were fortunate to have turned ours in under the lemon law for all of the same reasons listed in the other complaints but within a day or two of turning the vehicle in, there was a big colored picture of my Explorer in mathews currie Ford's used car ad. My problems were just being resold to some unsuspecting customer who thought they were getting a deal on a good low mileage car. It's is a shame that Ford is still allowed to sell those Explorers and they take no responsibility for selling defective vehicles.

63 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2006

Hard jolts when stopping and when shifting gears. Taken to dealership 4 times, Ford motor CO. Recommends keep driving it. Dealership states they can't fix it.

64 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2006

Shift handle frequently "sticks" in the park position. Manual disabling of the shift interlock mechanism was required to allow engagement of the transmission. The interlock disabling process was performed successfully in each instance (as described in the owner's manual). In each case, the driver who experienced the failure was unable to successfully execute the process and required the assistance of another family member who was called to the scene.

65 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2006

We have a 2004 Ford Explorer that is still under warranty with an unresolved automatic transmission/accelerator problem. The problem is a delayed engagement when the vehicle shifts from a low to a higher gear, and even more delay and aggressive shift from park to reverse. The shifting into reverse is so pronounced that it delays, then bangs into reverse, and suddenly lunges backward. This is a dangerous condition and could easily result in property damage or even injury to others.

66 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2006

My wife came home from shopping and tried to back into the carport and the SUV started to lunge and jerk,so we took it to the dearler about 10 minute later and we are waiting for it to be repaired. The date we went to the dealer was 4/12/11 and today is 4/14/11.

67 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2006

I purchased a 2006 eddie bauer Explorer in June of last year and have had transmission issues with it since I hit 1000 miles. I have had it into the dealership 4 times and they have adjusted, replaced a computer, did other transmission work and the vehicle still demonstrates the same issue. This problem happens during shifting and on slow down to stop. The vehicle jerks forward and shifts very rough between gears. Ford motor corp has refused to assist any further and has asked me to bring my vehicle back again for the 5th time. This situation is very dangerous as the vehicle does jerk forward when you stop. I have small children and this has put me into a situation where I feel like my children are unsafe in this vehicle due to the potential to rearend someone if the car fails to stop properly. Where is Ford when it comes to safety and consumer loyalty??? this was my third Ford purchase and will most likely be the last. A colleague of mine also purchased this same vehicle and is experiencing the same issues.

68 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/21/2005

I purchased a brand new 2006 Ford Explorer limited with the new 6-gear 8 cylinder engine. During downshift to a stop, the truck would literally lurch forward as the engine jerked into the proper gear. After repeated visits (in excess of 5) to the dealership, and replacements of valves and a whole new transmission, the problem is not as evident, but continues nonetheless. New problems have also developed, such as "jerking" movements on take off (as if I were pressing and releasing the gas), delayed response when pressing the accelerator on take off, as well as an engine "roar" on acceleration not typical of an engine fan ; none of these issues were corrected when brought to the attention of the dealer's service department (ernie haire Ford). I have been following a forum on edmunds. Com where other consumers are having the exact same issues; the "computer" was simply reprogrammed and expected to "fix" the problem with no further options available, since an attempt to "lemon law" the vehicle would result in "a lot of lawyers and litigation and paperwork," as expressed by the service manager at ernie haire, and would "probably wind up being a waste of my time and money if the company couldn't find anything wrong with the vehicle during the process". I did not have these mechanical issues with my '97 Explorer.
