1 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 12/25/2020

The passenger cabin both front and rear has the pungent smell of exhaust whenever the vehicle - engine running and - either in park or drive and - either moving or stationary and - either highway or city driving and - going 0 mph, or 10 mph or 20 mph or 50 mph and - either turning or straight and - with the heat on or off and - with the air conditioning on or off and - with all of the windows sealed (up) the fumes seem to make us not feel well and make our eyes burn. There is something seriously wrong with these cars! so anytime the car is running exhaust fumes are entering the passenger cabin.

2 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 08/24/2019

During acceleration with the air conditioner running, there is a smell of rotten eggs in the cabin. When it happens myself and others in the car will experience light headedness and headaches. Additionally, my partner experienced the headache and vomited on the side of the road due to the smell. It smells like exhaust fumes and rotten eggs, which is clearly from the exhaust. The fact that there hasn't been a recall regarding this issue is criminal.

3 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2019

There are often issues with the radio and heating system. Radio turns on and off by itself and so does the heat and air conditioning. In addition, I have complained about something making me dizzy and nauseous in the vehicle. In informed the finance company regarding my inability to breath, for which I was hospitalized. I have been hospitalized on numerous occasions since the purchase of the vehicle and have informed the finance. Furthermore, they have been additional hospitalizations in 2018, for which I will have to upload the documents at a later time.

4 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2018

Strong excessive fuel exhaust/fumes in cabin of car, especially noticed when accelerating like getting onto the interstate with air condition on.

Thank you.

6 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2017

Airbag light has come on for the second time. The vehicle is currently at approxi mately 62,000 miles. The previous time the airbag came on was for defective seatbelts with the airbags in passenger compartment. Also, a smell of sulfur is coming from the air vents when the air conditioning is on. The smell is strongest when the car is stationary. When the car is traveling at highway speeds without a/c on, there is no odor.

7 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2017

We were driving down the highway and my husband noted an exhaust odor when he accelerated to pass another car. We continued to smell the odor regardless of the air conditioning being on or off.

8 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2017

Exhaust fumes fill cabin under hard acceleration. It has happened many times over the past few years, we purchased car new in ~ may 2015. Typically we can limit by accelerating slower than desired, which can be unsafe when entering the highway. After hard acceleration has ended and you maintain steady speed the fumes no longer seem to enter the cabin. Fumes can be very strong and rolling down windows is the only way to clear. It seems to mostly happen with rear air conditioning in turned on, but not sure. I put todays date below, but this happens often. I have read online and spoken to dealers in the past and no fix seems to be available so we have done are best to avoid with slow acceleration, but we can not be certain that no fumes are entering car. Both my wife and I seem to get more head aches than in the past and this could be the cause.

9 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2017

Law enforcement vehicle receiving high carbon monoxide level readings (10+ parts per million) in passenger cabin upon hard acceleration (from complete stop to 100+ mph) with the air conditioning system on with the recirculation function activated. 686.

10 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2017

Strong oder or exhaust when accelerating from a stop or attempting to pass. Usually have the windows up and the air conditioning on and at higher rpms.

12 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2017

After Ford dealer completed the third TSB 16-0166 repair to fix the exhaust fumes smell in cabin, I still have the same problem. TSB 16-0166 repair did not fix the exhaust gas fumes smell in the cabin. The problem usually occurs with the air conditioning on, going up a steep hill, or going over the crest of a steep hill, speed is in the range of 45-60 mph, and not in full open throttle.

13 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2017

There is a gas/propane smell inside of my vehicle which requires the occupants to roll down the windows because of safety concerns. The smell is more prevalent when accelerating and using the air conditioning system. There is a strong exhaust/gas smell present in the vehicle causing sick conditions of all passengers.

Failure Date: 01/01/2017

Strange smell in cabin of car when first turn air conditioning on. My daughter describes it as "stinky feet".

15 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2016

Takata recall when accelerating exhaust can be smelled in the cabin of the car. It appears to be coming out of all of the air vents. It gets so strong that the windows must be rolled down in order to clear the exhaust smell from the cabin of the car. The car also often has a very rough idle. At times when accelerating the air conditioner loses power as well. This car has been taken into a certified Ford dealership 3 times now for all of these issues. None of the issues have been resolved. It is actually scheduled to go back to a different certified Ford dealership for its fourth maintenance repair.

16 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2016

When under load (I. E. Climbing hill) or fast acceleration (passing a vehicle) there is a strong odor of exhaust in the passenger cabin. The odor is coming from the air vents throughout the vehicle. Windows must be opened to get rid of the smell. This occurs primarily and was most noticeable when the air conditioner unit was operated (on recirculating air setting) and while driving up an incline. . Note: although this issue is reported as occurring on the date indicated, we have noticed it multiple times with the same symptoms and circumstances!.

17 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2016

Getting exhaust smell in passenger area of vehicle when proceeding down highways. We can not keep windows down when running air conditioning or heater, even in the rain.

18 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2016

August 19:identified 3 error codes, one of which was the power steering. Tech. Said vehicle would be very difficult to steer if it lost power steering because of the size of Explorer. Service checked wiring and connections, and they had also driven the vehicle, but they needed more time with the vehicle. August on a clear, warm day at about 1:00 pm, driving 6 people in the Explorer on the expressway when we started experiencing problems. Chiming noises were heard initially, then intermittently. The dashboard lights started blinking on and off. The entire dashboard then went black, then intermittently on with the speedometer going back and forth from 0 to around 75, then blacking out again. Left hand side of dashboard displayed brake system warning symbol and low tire pressure warning symbol. The air conditioning and radio went off. Awd off message appeared on left side of dashboard. Right hand side of dashboard displayed: stability control, stability control system off & front air bag symbols. Maximum heat started pouring out of vents. Abs symbol appeared and right hand signal came on. Service advance trac message was also displayed at some point. This problem episode lasted at least 4 minutes while we were driving. We took pictures of the dashboard and videotaped part of this episode. September service techs can¿t duplicate problem, the Ford hotline engineer suggested that the service dept attach a flight recorder to car in an effort to record activity if the problem reoccurs while driving. Cell phone won't sync with the car since the last incident on Aug 28th. Service tech explained that this a network problem and flight recorder worked off the network, therefore flight recorder would be useless . The service tech informed the Ford engineer that they would not be installing the flight recorder because it would be ineffective.

19 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2016

August 10-October 20th: numerous fault codes appeared on dash: terrain management fault light appeared on dashboard, then the entire dashboard went black, the air conditioning stopped, the radio turned off, the terrain management control knob was no longer lit. Suddenly, very hot air started pouring out of all vents with what seemed like maximum fan speed. For 34 out of 60 day period (6 occurrences and 6 visits to dealership), Ford kept vehicle and tried to determine the cause. They were unable to retrieve any error codes or duplicate the problem. Provided details and picture from my cell phone of error messages to service dept. August we were driving 6 people in the Explorer on the expressway when we started experiencing problems. 20 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2016

When I turn the vehicle on with the air conditioning on, an unpleasant smell comes through the vents. I have changed the air filter, cabin air filter, and used a spray to clean the vents. The spray smell overpowered the unpleasant smell for about 3-4 days. The unpleasant smell is back. I recently became aware of the NHTSA's investigation into the exhaust leak into the cabin which most likely is the problem I am experiencing. I often have my children in the vehicle with me and am starting to get concerned about what effect the fumes could have on them.

21 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2016

During hard acceleration while the air conditioning is on, a foul odor enters the passenger cabin. (such as passing another vehicle or going up a hill. ) this happens every time I drive the vehicle in warm weather and run the ac. So it's an on-going condition, not a one time event.

22 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2016

The contact owns a 2015 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that there was an abnormal odor in the vehicle while the air condition was in operation. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, after several months the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure however, the contact was informed that no further assistance would be offered. The approximate failure mileage was 10,000.

23 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 08/30/2015

Takata recall, strong odor inside car. Strong odor whenever air conditioner is on. Strong egg smell. Bad smells coming through vents. Experiencing extremely bad headaches and dizziness.

24 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2015

Law enforcement vehicle receiving high carbon monoxide level readings (10+ parts per million) in passenger cabin upon hard acceleration (from complete stop to 100+ mph) with the air conditioning system on with the recirculation function activated. 549.

25 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2015

My 2015 Ford Explorer has had a foul smell with the air conditioner and heat turned on but mainly the air conditioner. When driving the vehicle for longer then 20 minutes anyone who is in the vehicle either gets a headache or becomes nauseous. On several occasions my 2 young children have even vomitted in the vehicle. After reading about this carbon monoxide issue I am appalled that I even have to drive this vehicle longer. What is it going to take for Ford to do something about this.

26 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 05/24/2015

Exhaust gas fumes come into the inside cabin while driving, mostly from the rear of the vehicle. The air conditioning or heater is on and the recirculation fan can be either on or off. Failure mode can be on flat surface but mostly occurs going up and down hills. Not sure if the decelleration of the vehicle is part of the cause. Problem is intermittent, may not occur for weeks and then might occur 3-4 times in a day one specific example is on November 30, 2015, at 2:30 pm hvac system is set to heat, set to 73 degrees heat in dual temp control is on, recirculation is on, elevation is 3100 feet, going uphill on catron blvd towards highway 16 in rapid city, sd,(outskirts of town), decelerated from 50 to 40 mph at 40mph speed limit sign, several vehicles around us, odometer reading was 5482. 5 miles, and smelled exhaust fumes in the cabin that appeared to come from the rear of the cabin, had to open both front windows for about a minute to get the smell out.

27 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2015

I purchased this vehicle in April of 2015. A month or two in I noticed when accelerating and/or running air conditioning exhaust type smell/fumes fill cabin. Vehicle has been taken twice to dealership (bates Ford of lebanon TN) but they seemed oblivious and advised nothing was wrong. I have experienced dizziness and headaches and fearful to drive it. I have not received any recall notices and this is very worrisome! I paid over $30,000 and am still financing it and do not want this vehicle! my family is at risk! please help!.

28 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2015

I have noticed since the car was purchased new a strong odor coming from the air conditioning system when you depress the accelerator to max when passing a car or entering an on ramp. I have tried with both the fresh air on and recirculate on, the same effect is noticed. Finally after dealing with this for about a year I brought it up to my dealer when the vehicle was in for its routine service. The service advisor informed me he has a 2016 Explorer with the same problem and that Ford came back with something about vents not opening quick enough at the rear of the vehicle. To his knowledge, there was no fix from Ford as of yet. The smell does get quite strong and routinely the windows need to be lowered to prevent the strong odors from lingering. I am concerned as to what the odor is, possibly harmful emissions that could affect myself and my passengers? under normal driving conditions the smelled will appear when the accelerator is depressed more than half way, far too often in my opinion. I did notice more of the smell during the warmer months of the year and not as much when it was cooler/cold (we live in florida so never freezing).

29 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2015

Since leasing this car new in 2015, we have experienced on many occasions, especially after acceleration, a strong exhaust smell enter the passenger compartment of the vehicle. Being an automotive instructor,I was able to access technical service bulletins regarding this issue but they were related to modifications to the rear air conditioning unit. We experienced the smell even with the ac off. I am very concerned about the long term health effects of the deadly exhaust gases entering the cabin and being exposed to my family including children and grandchildren. I also find it ridiculous that a manufacturer with a long history of Ford motor company would allow this to go on for so long as I have learned.

30 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2014

Smell of exhaust fumes and/or sulfur-type odors coming through air conditioning system under heavy acceleration, passing on highway, or when engine is under a load. Fumes/smell get so bad that I have to roll down all windows and open sunroof to ventilate the passenger compartment. Tolerated the headaches, nausea, and light-headedness while driving until situation became intolerable and had begun to avoid driving the Explorer. First serviced in 10/2015, dealer had vehicle for 4 or 5 days. I was told that a TSB was performed which included removing the rear bumper and using sealant, but that did not correct the problem. Fumes in passenger compartment persisted. On 9/26/2016 took vehicle back to dealer for further diagnostics and repair attempts for same problem. Dealer had vehicle through 10/4/16, and called to tell me to come pick-up vehicle as it was "fixed" by cleaning a/c evaporator, and also "speaking with Ford engineers". Went for test drive with service manager. After approx. 4-5 miles on highway, under varying acceleration conditions, cabin began to smell like fumes again, coming through the a/c vents. Then I began to feel light-headed and informed service manager of same. Could not ventillate vehicle due to heavy rains, but taking a/c off of "recirculate air" helped only a little, and changed nature of odor slightly. Dealership was using a meter to measure what was supposed to be carbon monoxide. Was consistently told throughout that measurements were "low" at 900ppm to max 1500ppm. When driving with same meter, it alarmed multiple times, but I was told it was because meter responds to breathing in the car. I determined that meter was for carbon dioxide not carbon monoxide. Returned vehicle to service, was told Ford is having regional rep examine vehicle on 10/11/16. I have filed a lemon law complaint with bbb.

31 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2014

The contact owns a 2015 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that there was an odor of carbon monoxide from the cabin air filter when the vehicle accelerated and the air conditioner was activated. Due to the odor, the contact experienced brief moments of dizziness and an abnormal feeling. The failure occurred without warning. The dealer diagnosed that the odor was due to the new vehicle smell dissipating. The vehicle was not diagnosed again. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 90.
