1 Car Stall problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/04/2021

On two incidents this week when steering wheel is cut to maximum left or right in tight parking lot and narrow road while making tight turns at legal speeds the engine (v8 4. 6l) stalls. Brought to non-Ford mechanic for inspection(nys annual) and passes but mechanic looked for a power steering pressure sending sensor or switch that is to give signal to emc to increase idle to compensate for more power steer demands. Part is $35 at partgeek but mechanics dont know where the harness the sending switch is located, if one exists or is it in power steering pump. Call Ford nada! call two local Ford dealers. One says dont work on cars 15 years old, other says go to liabary to get diagrams, Ford says obsolete parts in 10 years. Bummer! husband ordered 8/10/20 new 2021 bronco. Pushed into 2022 due to supply chain. Found out bronco built at map same as ranger, will not get stronger 10r80 transmission, but Explorer 10r60, 25% weaker ; and gets Explorer 2. 3l egoboost non- ranger improved 4×4 engine , although they say same transmission and improved engine as ranger in ads. Ford buit tought? my2022! please investigate this highway traffic safety isdue. No braking nor steering when senson in power steering stalls 4. 6l engine. 2 Car Stall problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/25/2020

Within 10 days of buying it brand new I've had electrical problems. Replaced back up screen within those 10 days even though they didn't find anything wrong. Still continues. Multiple issues with the power train. Now I've been out of a car for 2 weeks because I might need a new transmission at 65,000 no longer under warranty. How can I pay $38,000 and it goes bad instantly? no help from Ford or dealer. My gears are stalling and not shifting correctly or picking up speed. I drive like an old lady and take care of this car like it's brand new. I will never buy a Ford again and will tell anyone who will listen not to do the same.

3 Car Stall problem of the 2020 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/11/2020

Purchased Ford Explorer st in sept 2019 and windshield was not properly installed. Took multiple rips to dealership to correct. And it is still not properly fixed. They had to reinstall windshield and passenger side pillar. The electrically connectivity with sync 3 has never worked properly. I have been to dealership multiple times and they could nto fix it. Then I went to start the car (early in morning) and 3 different times white smoke came billowing from exhaust. The first time I shut off the car thinking it was on fire. The second time, it dissipated quickly. The third time, I drove to dealership. They could not fix it. 5 days later more white smoke when I started it, and the engine malfunction indicator light came on. After 7 days at the dealership, they replaced a ect sensor. Still pending to see if a sensor causes billowing white smoke from exhaust. Dealership refused to check head gaskets, cylinder head, or engine block which are the main sources for white smoke. This vehicle has had nothing but problems. Such a frustrating turn of events that continue.

4 Car Stall problem of the 2020 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/24/2020

Vehicle stalled when pulling out from a stop light onto a highway (65mph). It took several attempts to restart. The vehicle once put in drive jerked forward/backward when I hit the gas. The rpms went up but the car was not driving well. It stalled again. I had to repeat this process 4 more times. It finally began to drive and then the engine light came on. The Ford pass app gave me an error code. Malfunction indicator lamp. The vehicle has 109 miles. The car is with the dealer less than 2 days after purchase.

6 Car Stall problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/12/2019

I have a 2013 Ford Explorer and have been recently experiencing random, dangerous stalls due to a faulty throttle body. I have had the throttle body cleaned twice and it continues to fail, leaving our car in a "limp-home mode" in dangerous road conditions. It usually stalls when accelerating from a low idle position, such as sitting at a stoplight and then accelerating. However, it had also stalled while traveling higher speeds and then accelerating. Once I pull off the road, the car engine shakes violently until I'm able to put in park and then turn the ignition off. After a few seconds the engine will usually restart at normal idle and proper engine function is restored until the next throttle body failure.

7 Car Stall problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/04/2019

A little over a month ago the left rear toe link broke while driving. This caused the car to lose control and go into a sideways slide, breaking the wheel hub in the process. Smooth road going about 50 mph in good conditions. We got the car fixed and had to pay for the repairs since the car is no longer under factory warranty. After the Ford dealer in mchenry IL had it for over a week, we got the car back, drove it for a few days and suddenly we had a cracked exhaust flex pipe. We had to pay several hundred more to get that repaired. Again, driven on smooth roads in the summer, nothing that would have caused this so suddenly. Got the car back again after several more days in the shop. . Drove it for a couple more days and the left rear toe link broke. . Again. . . Dealer this time installed the "recall kit" on both sides. Luckily, this time it was at slow speeds coming into a parking lot . Had the car towed back to the dealer. Again. . We have had the car back for about 3 days now, and the left toe link has come loose. . Again. . The car will be towed back to the dealer tomorrow because it is unsafe to drive. It was driven 3 times at low speeds around town since we got it back. My wife is now afraid to drive the car out of fear of it breaking again. This is a serious issue if the recall part doesn't work. When this part fails, this car has a severe loss of control and can very easily result in an accident. Ford needs to get to the bottom of this before someone gets killed.

9 Car Stall problem of the 2011 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/15/2019

Engine damage due to overheating. Regular and required oil changes are documented and implemented as scheduled. No other engine or vehicle malfunctions during the course of ownership, except regular oil changes and tire replacement. However, on may 15, 2019, vehicle sensor notified oil change needed. Five days later vehicle stalled at local motel due to decreased power, rocking motion of car and luckily we were able to slowly turn into local hotel to cut off engine and get to safety. After 2 hours of letting vehicle set and cool down, local mechanic, checked and said we had enough oil in vehicle and not sure what happened. Was able to drive vehicle home, with no sensors on dashboard alerting us to any further problems. Three days later, with no visible sensors flashing, car began to exhibit rocking motion not sputtering motion as I began to pull out in four-way intersection, and approaching traffic heading my way. Then suddenly, car regained power and was able to continue to proper lane as if nothing was wrong. After traveling another 1. 6 miles, car just starting losing power, check engine, low oil pressure light, temperature light warning all appeared suddenly. I was able to drift in middle lane in front of dealership where vehicle was purchased. I immediatedly turned vehicle off and walked to dealership to get help in moving vehicle off the road. After 3days of waiting, duncah dealership in christiansburg, va, notifed us that head gasget was cracked and over 7,000 repair bill was needed to fix engine repair. As noted before no major problems has ever been repaired or replaced regarding this vehicle. During the two incidents regarding the vehhicle losing power, without no visible vehicle sensor notifications is of great concern to us regarding our safety in driving our vehicle. Thankfully, we weren't on a major highway.

13 Car Stall problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/13/2019

2015 Ford Explorer limited approximately 80000 miles. While in motion loses engine all engine power and begins to shudder. The vehicle will not accelerate at all. After stopping the vehicle, shifting into park, shutting the engine off and restarting, the problem goes away as if it never happened. When this occurs the dashboard indicates service terrain system management with the wrench icon. It has happened several times, all without warning and all while on the highway and having to maneuver a stalling vehicle out of traffic. Very dangerous!! have taken it to the dealership twice with no answers to why it happens. No codes show up in the system. Something needs to be done before a serious or fatal accident occurs.

21 Car Stall problem of the 2007 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 04/10/2018

"takata recall": while driving normally on a straight local road, our Ford Explorer suddenly lost power without warning. The wrench warning light came on. It had to be towed to pepboys garage. They said that the throttle body assembly had broken down. As soon as the assembly was replaced, the car worked. Unknown to us, an "unofficial" recall of this assembly had already been made to many Ford models. Of course, our vehicle contained this same defective equipment. Hence, we request that Ford pay for the replacement of the part and for the labor charge involved. The consequence of this defective equipment could have been disastrous if the stall had occurred on the expressway! my husband had had no control of the car when the vehicle stopped. It was pouring rain and he had to wait in the car for two hours for a tow truck. He had spinal surgery in October and is scheduled for more spinal surgery on June 19th, so this was very painful for him and he had much difficulty walking for the rest of the day.

22 Car Stall problem of the 2012 Ford Explorer

The vehicle was unable to start on the first attempt. The failure recurred over three times. The contact noticed the failure after she depressed the accelerator pedal after a complete stop. The local dealer (gulf coast Ford, n, 3000 state hwy 288, angleton,TX, 77515) was contacted scheduled an appointment for two days later. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 155,000.

23 Car Stall problem of the 2014 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/01/2017

Ford Explorer exhaust-leak. My 2014 Ford Explorer first exhibited a strong exhaust leak smells in the cabin about 18 months ago with approximately 18-20,000 miles. The smell was most noticeable after coming to a stop with the car at full operating temperature. Around town it never seems to be present. I took it to loveland Ford and they installed a "kit" which seemed to stop the problem, however it has recently come back stronger than ever. Yesterday, I drove from denver up into the rockies and the problem was particularly bad on the return trip in stop and go traffic to the point I was feeling sick by the time I got home. I have had this before but the circumstances made this particularly unpleasant. So the circumstance when it most often exhibits the strong "rotten egg" smell mixed with exhaust is when the vehicle is at full temperature and comes to a stop.

24 Car Stall problem of the 2017 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/15/2017

Carbon monoxide detected in passenger cabin - after reading stories about possible problems with carbon monoxide (CO) in 2016 Ford Explorers in mid July 2017 I purchased a kidde battery powered CO detector and installed it in the rear area of the passenger compartment. It had not alarmed until we were traveling from seneca, SC to indianapolis, in. We were towing an 8x5 enclosed u-haul trailer at normal freeway speeds. Tow/haul was engaged because we were towing and the engine was generally running at higher rpm's, especially going up the mountain inclines. The CO detector first alarmed west of ashviille, nc. Suddenly the headaches and drowsiness both my wife and I were experiencing made sense. We opened the windows and the alarm stopped after a couple minutes. After this happened 3-4 times I moved the detector to the front of the passenger cabin so that I could monitor the part per million display. We found that it only took 15-20 minutes of highway driving for the detector to display 31ppm, the detectors minimum concentration detection threshold. The level would then build over time. Due to the detrimental effects of CO on the human body I never let the concentration exceed 62ppm. I found, however, that the peak CO concentration detected was 103ppm. I assume this was reached while the detector was in the rear of the cabin, where the display was not visible to me. The service manager at lake keowee Ford suggested that I run the hvac in recirculate mode. I tried many different hvac modes - recirculate, normal/outside air, rear hvac turned off - but the result was always the same, CO being detected in the cabin within 15-20 minutes. Needless to say I am not buying Ford's claim that this problem is only with law enforcement vehicles with body perforations from the installation of after market equipment. The vehicle is going into a carmel, in Ford dealer this afternoon.

25 Car Stall problem of the 2014 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/11/2017

I am writing to you in regards to physical illness that I have suffered as well as my passengers from my 2014 Ford Explorer police interceptor package. Starting back when I first purchased the vehicle at approximately 59,000 miles, I have experienced an exhaust odor in the cabin shortly after accelerating over 3,000rpms. This issue has been investigated at my local dealership twice, with the technician confirming the smell. After this work was performed, I still to this day am suffering from exhaust fumes and physical illness directly related to my Ford Explorer. All repair orders from involved Ford dealerships are in my possession confirming exhaust fumes are still entering the cabin. From the time I took ownership in October 2016, I have experienced physical illness when driving the vehicle for more than 1 hour at a time. I get extremely lightheaded and nauseated, which has caused me to frequently stop the vehicle and vomit. My passengers in the vehicle have also experienced similar symptoms when riding in the vehicle. When this happens, I stop at a safe location and remove myself to fresh air, and the symptoms soon pass and I am able to drive again. Recently, I have traveled from massachusetts to vermont in my Explorer. The mostly highway driving trip it was me as well as my girlfriend. After around an hour of driving at 60mph, my girlfriend and I were feeling very dizzy and became nauseated, so I opted to stop and relax at a rest stop for fresh air prior to continuing my trip to vermont. I have installed a carbon monoxide detector in my vehicle, which has activated more than one occasion while driving. At this time I am negotiating with Ford's office of general counsel to perform a buyback of my Explorer and replace it with a different vehicle.

26 Car Stall problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/28/2017

After completing a left turn on a warm sunny dry clear day on a flat road surface I had accelerated normally up to about 30 miles an hour (speed limit 45) and all of the sudden completely lost power. For a second I thought the car had stalled so I put it in neutral and tried to restart but it was in fact still running. It would not rev at all. I put the truck back into gear and turned on my four-way flashers. Pressing the gas did absolutely nothing, the engine was running rough and I was able to go about 5 miles an hour for about 500 feet at which point I pulled into a parking lot and started swearing at my 2015 Explorer with under 23k miles which could have killed me if it had lost power 30 seconds sooner while I was turning left. This is very clearly a health and safety defect and this vehicle should be recalled ASAP. Obviously I cannot allow my wife and child to drive in this vehicle. I've been driving for over 25 years and have never had anything like this happen.

27 Car Stall problem of the 2014 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/01/2017

Purchased a 2014 Ford Explorer in February 2014, and within weeks of owning the vehicle I started to notice a foul smell entering the cabin immediately after acceleration. If acceleration occurs quickly, with a higher then normal rpm occurring, the smell becomes worse. On three separate occasions, I have taken the vehicle to mac haik Ford in houston for repair. The first two visits were were non-productive, as the dealership claimed they could not reproduce the issue. On the third visit, I asked that they technician go on a test drive with me in the car. This visit finally resulted in an admission from the technician that he could also smell the odor, and they agreed to keep the vehicle and identify the source of the issue. After a few days, I was told that the issue had been corrected by adding an additional vent line towards the rear of the vehicle. Within hours of having the vehicle back, it had become obvious that a permanent fix was not installed, and the odor inside the cabin has continued to occur regularly over the past three years.

28 Car Stall problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 04/28/2017

The contact owns a 2015 Ford Explorer. While driving 50 mph, the vehicle lost power and slowed down independently. The contact stated that an unknown warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle stalled and was able to be restarted. The failure recurred three more times. The vehicle was taken to autonation Ford (st. Petersburg 2525 34th st n, st. Petersburg, FL 33713) where the dealer was unable to diagnose the vehicle or replicate the failure; however, the alternator and battery were replaced. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was out of warranty and mentioned that they would call back to inform the contact of whether the vehicle's warranty would be extended. The contact also called a lemon law hotline and was informed that the law did not apply to the case. The approximate failure mileage was 31,000.

29 Car Stall problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 04/22/2017

When driving down the road and accelerating the car immediately stalled and I had to pull of the side of the road for safety. I was on a country road and able to restart my car without issue till 1 week later when I was downtown driving home at 1:00am and I had to push my car one block in order to get to a safe play and get a tow. It has been in the shop for over 1 month with Ford saying its a number of things it isn't. It is till under warranty and I believe this is an issue with the ecoboost on the vehicle. This in its own could have been a very dangerous situation. This could have been even worse if I was on the interstate (which is where I was headed) they initially said it was the power train module and we waited on the part for 1 month and it didn't fix anything. Now they are stating its the tubing for the turbo engine (ecoboost) and we continue to wait on the part and the repair. This Explorer has 34,000 and is a red Ford Explorer ecoboost.

30 Car Stall problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/30/2017

When I drive my Explorer and the engine revs up above 2800 rpm while merging onto a highway, a strong exhaust odor comes in the cab of my vehicle. The smell is bad enough that all my family has become very dizzy to the point of almost passing out and we have had headaches immediately after. I have a 2 year old daughter and I worry that the exhaust odor can harm her and the rest of our family. Before filing this complaint I did research and I found that a police officer in California sustained serious injuries due to a crash that was caused by the same exhaust smell on his Explorer which made him faint. Additionally, the austin police department has now installed carbon monoxide detectors in their police vehicles due to a police officer experiencing the same symptoms after his vehicle had exhaust enter the cabin of his Explorer. I believe that this issue needs immediate attention because lives are at risk and it has not been resolved. This issue that has happened in my personal Explorer is not random. It happens every single time that the engine exceeds 2800 rpm. This happens whether I have the air conditioner/heater on or not. I am honestly considering stopping using my vehicle until this matter is resolved. I have taken my vehicle to the local Ford dealership and they wanted to charge me 1,800 dollars to fix the issue, but they advised that it is not 100% guaranteed that the issue would be resolved. I strongly disagree with this and therefore I will sincerely hope that our NHTSA can help us Ford Explorer owners to fix the problem.

31 Car Stall problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/26/2017

Climate control system. There is a pungent odor coming from the system at various times, usually when the air conditioner is operating. This has been an ongoing issue and the source has not been identified. The engine will begin running rough at idle, both in drive and park, as though it were going to stall. The problem was checked and compared to another new vehicle, which had not been purchased, and identified as being "normal". Most recently both catalytic converters failed. They were replaced and it does not appear to have corrected any other issue.

32 Car Stall problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/19/2017

While driving out of the subdivision the car stalled. The wrench light came on. We parked it and took another car we had at the time. We will make mention of it tomorrow when I call the dealer and add it the service ticket regarding the exhaust problem.

34 Car Stall problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/17/2016

Car has stalled twice in traffic. . One instance traveling 65 mph on interstate. . . Other time while making a left turn in traffic. . . Both times collisions were barely avoided. I have received recall 16b32 on vehicle. Am concerned whether it is an improved version, or just the same throttle body. This condition creates some very dangerous situations.
