Engine dies when driving with cruise control operating and heading down slight hill at speed of around 35 mph. Cruise is designed to maintain driving speed going down the hill (up or down hill for that matter). The tachometer indicates a slowing of engine rpm. At higher speeds, the slowing of rpm does not fall too low. However, at the slower speed around 35mph, the rpm drops below 500 rpm and the engine stalls. I lose power steering and breaks. I have a difficult time steering and breaking. This is a safety problem on a curve or if a red light is ahead. I can't steer the car on the curve. I may not be able to stop the car at the traffic light and end up in an intersection and be hit by vehicles with a green light. I may hit a car in front of me that has stopped at a light or stop sign. I may not be able to stop for a pedestrian crossing at the intersection (with the light). I may not be able to avoid a child . . . Who darts into the roadway. This is a problem for many owners of the 2004 Explorer. There are many complaints about it on the web. It is a problem that has been noted for years. I complained about it to dealers several times. Dealers dismissed it as nothing can be found, replicated or just not a problem. It is time to recalll the vehicle to fix this safety problem. This is an ongoing problem. I try to avoid using cruise control control at the 35mph range. It seems ok at highway speeds. The last of many instances was in November 2020. The problem first happened when there about 30,000 miles on the car.

My car (Ford Explorer 2016) engine stalled (during driving/motion) in the middle of the street (I was very lucky it did not happen on a highway!). The engine light indication turned on. Ford dealer told me it is the ¿throttle body¿ part that needs to be replaced and they will order the part. They told me it can take up to 5 weeks to receive it but in the meantime I can drive my car, only after I confronted them about the safety of the car they suggested that I will not drive the car until the part will be replaced. I am writing to you in order to prevent any unsafe situation for any other drivers/passengers as result of my case. Thanks.

Engine stopped running for no reason was able to turn off of major highway on to side street. Let unit set for several minutes and was able to get restarted. Went several blocks and engine stalled again. Let set again and was able to drive home about two miles without any more problems . Next day engine stalled again, resarted and was able to return home without stalling. Unit was then towed to repair shop for service where they did not find any trouble codes and were not able to get unit to repeat problem by warming engine and driving a number of times. They are at a loss for a solution other than a computer reprogram.

My wife was driving and the engine just stalled . We pulled into a gas station with no power steering or brakes. I had it towed home that day. Later I found out the timing chain had come off.
Engine stalls. Whenever it feels like it, hot or cold, slowing down to stop, turning left or right, on the street roads and freeways. Starts and go again after 5/10 minutes but this is ridiculous. I paid so much money and time for diagnostic and parts already and yesterday was the worst. My 2006 Ford Explorer stalled in the middle of the freeway. Date: Nov 1, 2011, time:1550, and my wife was driving, when she's not happy, nobody's happy. . . . She almost got ran over as she open her door, she could not go anywhere but wait for time to either cool off or reset on the engine.

The manufacturer was contacted, however the vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 42,000 and the current mileage 42,933.
Engine stalls out when braking or turning. This is an issue that occurs at random with no warning. This has continued to occur multiple times over the last four years, and leaves myself and family in a, powerless, defenseless, potentially fatal, situation.

Sat. Jan. 19, 2008; approx. 99,780 miles - engine stalled while we were turning off the highway to a side street. We had just driven approx. 20 miles, so the engine was warm. The steering wheel locked up when the engine turned off, which caused us to go into the oncoming traffic lane. Fortunately no one was coming towards us so we could stop, put it in park, and restart the engine. This is about the fifth or sixth time it happened.

The Ford recall for engine stalling does not appear to apply to the 2003 Explorer, but I have definitely had the engine stall 5 or 6 times while I've been driving. It has happened while I've been decelerating, either for a stop sign, traffic light, or turn. The engine was warm each time. I was always able to restart the engine quickly enough so that no accidents occurred, but the closest call was when it happened at a busy traffic light. I did not write down the exact dates when it happened, so the incident date below is only approximate. I believe the recall should be expanded.
The contact owns a 2006 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the engine stalls at any given moment and at speeds of 10 mph or greater. He took the vehicle to the dealer and they reset the computer. A week later, the vehicle stalled again. The vehicle has been to the dealer approximately three to four times, but the failure still persists. The current mileage is 11,900 and failure mileage was 10,000.
: the contact stated while driving various speeds, the engine stalled without warning. Afterwards, the engine was restarted after several attempts. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer who was unable to duplicate the problem. The manufacturer was not alerted.
: the contact stated the engine idled roughly. While sitting at a stop sign the vehicle idled erratically. While traveling around curves or down hills, at any speed, the engine felt as if it was going to stall. However, the engine has never completely stalled. The vehicle has been seen by the service dealer several times, but the problem could never be duplicated. Updated 06/07/2006.

2003 Ford Explorer boyfriend's description of event: 1)I can consistently get the vehicle to stall out when coasting down to a stop. It is all in the way of the coast down. It is more repeatable if you start braking way before a stop event (slowly coasting in). The bad thing is the event is so quiet that half the time you did not know it stalled (unless you were looking at the ipc). You have to put the car in park or neutral to restart engine each time event occurs. I would say it has happened 30+ times. 2) the failure is a stalled engine. The consequence could be rolling out to incoming traffic, thinking the vehicle is running, yet the engine is stalled. ) nothing has been done yet. Took it into shop and it was said that nothing was seen (not a Ford dealership).
While driving smoke began coming from the engine compartment, the engine bogged down and the engine stalled. The engine ran roughly and smoke emitted from the vehicle. . Read more...
The vehicle jerked while being driven. The vehicle has been taken to the dealer 4-5 times. Each time the technician stated the problem was repaired but each time the jerking problem returned. The consumer does not believe that the technician can repair the problem. The vehicle would oscillate intermittently while pulling in and out of a driveway or parking. The wheel jerked violently. The consumer lost control of the vehicle and the engine would stall when the steering oscillated.
1. Engine stalls erratically when under acceleration when entering freeway, etc. Ford acknowledges the problem, states does not know how to fix it. 2. Brake failure in stop and go traffic. Vehicles currently has less than 10,000 miles on them. Both have same problems.
The engine stalled without warning.
The engine stalled twice in 3 days, last Friday I was driving at 70 mph, suddenly the engine stalled and I had to move over 3 lanes to stop at the shoulder, called the police, policeman checked the battery, no problem, the car just wouldn't start, he called the tow truck. I got curious, tried starting the car, it started back up. I then drove to the dealership, the technician said no error code and therefore no problem with the car. Today (Sunday), my car stalled again, this time I was driving 20 mph, the car started back up. What is causing this? I have small children riding with me! please give me some information about this!.
