41 Engine Stall problem of the 1996 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 09/01/2000

While traveling at various speeds (5 mph - 75 mph), the engine stalls without warning for approximately 5-10 seconds and then either resumes operation on its own, or must be restarted while coasting in neutral. Sometimes the engine will restart easily, but sometimes it turns over several times before restarting. Obviously this has created some extremely dangerous situations for myself and my family. Losing power assisted functions (steering, braking) at high speeds has left me with little control of the vehicle on several occasions. I have had this problem investigated twice at a Ford dealership but they have been unable to find a problem. They also installed a flight recorder on the vehicle to monitor the error codes when the problem happened but were unable to fnd anything conclusive. After reading the many reports of stalling on this website I find it hard to understand how this issue could not be considered a defect and a serious safety issue. I would truly like to receive any assistance or guidance on how to resolve this matter. It is unfair that Ford sells the Explorer with obvious saftely issues but is unable to fix them.

42 Engine Stall problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/09/2000

Traveling at 35 mph, engine stalled. I was able to make a safe stop on a busy/curvy road. Engine restarted and stalled one additional time.

43 Engine Stall problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 09/19/1999

Engine stalls and sometimes dies while accelerating from a stop. Problem most often occurs after long drives, on hot days, when turning to the left from a full or partial stop.

44 Engine Stall problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 09/17/1999

Engine misses and stalls in various situations including highway speeds and from a stop. Dealer has been unable to repair after replacing ignition wires and vaccuum assembly. I consider this to be a very dangerous situation because of loss of power steering and brakes. It also causes the vehicle to act as if the brakes have been applied causing a stop from high speeds.

45 Engine Stall problem of the 1999 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 09/03/1999

Engine cuts off while vehicle is in motion. When this happens, I lose brakes and steering. I have had the vehicle in for repair more than 3 times but the engine continues to stall out. Dealership indicates Ford is aware of the problem but is not able to presently repair. Vehicle is dangerous when engine quits while in motion. Vehicle is not providing reliable transportation. Also, there is an engine rattle which is worstening but dealership said this is "normal. " I am interested in determining if there have been other similar complaints and if so, how many and what has Ford done about this.

Engine stalled during left turn at intersection. All three times that this has occured has been up starting from a complete stop, and under moderate to heavy acceleration. Two of the incidents have occured during left turns, while the other occured going straight. The vehicle has been maintained in accordance with Ford's recommended maintenance schedule.

48 Engine Stall problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer

When starting cold engine races and gas pedal sticks, I live in florida so it doesn`t happen unless its 50 deg or less, engine also almost stalls, dealer could not find the problem.

49 Engine Stall problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/19/1999

Engine stalls sometimes when turning left after stop. Very dangerous in traffic. Taken in to multiple dealers who can never reproduce the failure. Stalling problem seems common among people with 4. 0 sohc engine (based on internet discussion). Truck was bought/registered under my wife's name: kathleen.

50 Engine Stall problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/10/1999

Engine stalls and almost quits entirely during acceleration. Most noticeable at speeds 50 - 55 mph. May be in conjuction with a slight turn of the left (during lane change on the freeway. ).

51 Engine Stall problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/18/1998

Engine occasionally hesitates or stalls upon reacceleration after coming to a stop at intersections. Possible danger of being in heavy traffic when stall occurs - potential accident. Dealership service department kept vehicle 2 days after one occurrence and could not duplicate the problem, but indicated that they were aware of this same problem in other Explorers. The hesitation or stalling usually happens after cruising on the freeway at 60 - 70 mph then getting off at an exit and stopping at an intersection. When reaccelerating the engine sometimes either hesitates badly then resumes normal operation or stalls completely - usually in the middle of the intersection - requiring restart.

52 Engine Stall problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/01/1998

4. 0l sohc engine, engine will severely lag or stall under heavy acceleration from slow speeds or from dead stop.

53 Engine Stall problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/20/1998

Engine stalling on a continual basis, unable to rectify after three repair attempts. Mjs.

54 Engine Stall problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/01/1998

Engine stalls or sputters from a stop or accelerating from ~40mph. This seems to happen at a greater rate when turning a sharp left and going over an incline such as a railroad crossing. This has caused 3 near collisions and would have caused a fatal incident had a train been bearing down on the train crossing. I have stalled on a raised train crossing 3 times.

55 Engine Stall problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/01/1998

After coming to a stop, intermittently, upon acceleration the engine hesitates and stalls. This leaves the driver in a dangerous situation, stalled in the middle of an intersection - this has led to numerous near accidents. The dealer is indifferent to the severity of the problem. The service dept. Can not find the cause. The onboard cpu does not leave any error codes and the service capture device does not pick-up any error codes. It appears to be an ignition misfire.

56 Engine Stall problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/10/1998

When traveling at low speeds/accelerating from a stopped position, engine stalls. Qcaw.

57 Engine Stall problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 04/20/1998

This is an Explorer with the sohc 4l engine. I have experienced at least a dozen episodes of the engine stalling, or nearly stalling, when accellerating from a stop, and usually when turning left. It seems to happen most often when the weather and engine are hot, and after idling for a few moments, such as when stopped at an intersection waiting for a light or a break in traffic. The stall, or hesistation, happens after the vehicle has moved perhaps one car length. The dealership has made three attempts at repair. This seems to be a common problem with Explorers with the sohc motor, and is very dangerous, leaving the occupants in the direct line of oncoming traffic in a disabled vehicle. Ford has not admitted a fault, or fixed the vehicle.

58 Engine Stall problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/01/1997

When engine is warm and vehicl is at a stop, driver attempts to accelerate hard to get into traffic the engine will stall or hesitate.

62 Engine Stall problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

When vehicle is at a stop, defect in engine causes vehicle to stall or hesitate. Dealer cannot duplicate problem.

63 Engine Stall problem of the 2000 Ford Explorer

I previously owned a 1998 Explorer that had the same problem I am having with my 2000 Explorer. From talking with the Ford dealer mechanic, this is a widespread problem that is occurring after 30,000 miles that is a potentially dangerous situation. The problem is upon startup of the vehicle, the engine will crank, and when the ignition key is released, the engine dies immediately. The only way to keep the engine running is to keep one foot on the gas pedal depressed. To drive the vehicle one foot must be on the gas and one on the brake to keep the engine from stalling. This is presenting a potentially dangerous situation and Ford is quite aware of it, but doing nothing in the form of a recall or safety bulletin to consumers. Fortunately my 1998 first failed under warranty, but my 2000 happened after my 36,000 mile warranty. The problem occurs intermittently but frequent at times, after driving several miles, it would correct itself. I think Ford needs to address this problem and do any repairs at no cost to the owner. **dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut over to artemis**766061.

Engine stalls. When accelerating from a stop the engine rpms will drop to "0". The engine will restart on its own. The stalling is for only a moment. I have reported ths problem to the dealer. The dealer could not solve the problem. The dealer put a "flig.

68 Engine Stall problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer

Ford was never able to determine cause of problem (engine cut out and or stalled upon moderate to hard acceleration, on most occasions from a stop) with vehicle after 5-6 repair attempts on parts listed above. Vehicle was replaced by Ford with a 1998 Explorer that turns out to be exhibiting the same problem that the 1997 Explorer did.

69 Engine Stall problem of the 1999 Ford Explorer
