The contact complained about an ongoing problems with the emission system. The vehicle has been seen by the service dealer five times for emission problems, and they have never been able to completely remedy the problem. After the vehicle was serviced the same emission problems recurred. The check engine light came on and fumes entered the vehicle. The manifold gasket, oxygen sensor, idle control sensor, and other emission parts have been replaced. Currently, the check engine light was on, fumes were entering the vehicle, and the contact was planning to return the vehicle to the service dealer for additional repairs.
I have a 1999 Ford Explorer XLT with a v-6 sohc 4 liter engine. The car has not properly accelerated since purchase in 2000, it has constantly stalled while driving and the dealer could not determine the problem because the check engine light was not on. I found out February 16, 2005 that I have a broken intake manifold gasket and it cost over $1,000 to fix. I have searched the internet related to this problem and found there are eight Ford models manufactured from 1996 through 2001 with this problem. Ford refuses to acknowledge this defect to consumers but according to the article inthe attached link, they have extended their warranty on this part to the police department and taxi companies that have purchased the affected cars. Check engine light illuminated at approximately 39000 miles. Diagnostic code p0174. No leaks present. Codes cleared. Check engine light recurred at 42000 miles. Diagnosed as failure of both exhaust gas oxygen sensor 063028 and sensor assy 021675. Ford motor refused reimbursement for defective parts.
08-14-02 (39685 miles) - replaced idle air control valve - $215. 87 03-14-03 (46676 miles) - replaced control arm and ball joints- $770. 82 I feel that the above mentioned repairs that were made to my 3 year old vehicle are a result of poor craftsmanship and quality when the vehicle was made, and that these current problems are evidence of "infant mortality". The Ford motor company has refused to accept any financial responsibility and did nothing more than receive my complaint.
While driving in overdrive at 50 mph and going up an incline, vehicle vibrates erratically. Problem has not been remedied. O2 sensor failed and was replaced. Fuel pressure regulator failed and was replaced. Consumer stated that the dealer can not do anything to fix the problem, which seems to be a manufacturer defect.
Onboard diagnostics indicated oxygen sensor error--common problem.

Egr valve is also bad and he refuses to acknowledge anything is wrong with vehicle. He states he replaced oxygen sensor unit but, it still appears old and rusted in. After the first day of having vehicle I complained about brakes. Idler bearing imobilized car 2 days after purchase,he geryy rigged it without fixing it properly.

Oxygen sensor failure no. 1 at 10300 miles on 12 Nov 1996, covered under vehicle warranty. Oxygen sensor failure no. 2 at 46200 miles on 4 may 1999. Oxygen sensor failure no. 3 at 64600 miles on 18 Jul 2000.
I was driving down the road and when going down a hill the veh. Stared to make a grinding noise. I had to get up out of the hole to pull off and I noted that when I steped back on the gas it stoped. It only does this when coasting or braking. I took it to the shop and they said it was a failure in the transfer case. I started looking for a new one on the net and found alot of other people describing the same problem to a t. One guy stated that his mechanic said that the gem control module had failed or partially failed and commanded the tranfer case to disengage causing damage to the case. It appeared to be a Ford electronic defect not having a fail safe mode but instead ordering the tranfer case to self destruct. The oxygen senors I replace them and they go right back out.
Vehicle experiencing ongoing problem with fuel vapor smell coming inside the vehicle. Dealer notified, and was unable to locate the problem. Also, seat moves back and forth, and driver's shoulder belt would not latch properly. Dealer notified.
The check engine light, the dealer replaced both ego sensors.
Continuous issues with the pcv/egr since vehicle purchase in 1998. Spent over $1200 attempting to resolve the problem. Both independent and dealer mechanics have been involved with no success. The cel light has been on for over three years now because I no longer wished to spend money diagnosing this problem.
