36 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2001 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/01/2007

I am experiencing the timing belt tensioner issue that resulted in the Ford customer service satisfaction program #00m12. This extended the warranty to 6 years or 72,000 miles on that part. Too late for me, as I began having trouble a few months a go. Now, I am at 6 years/87,000 miles. My local Ford dealer said they knew nothing and so I called Ford directly. They told me to lodge a complaint with nhts. Pretty bad situation for me and many others as I have been researching on the internet.

38 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/08/2005

The contact stated vehicle stalled. Although the engine died it easily restarted. He took the vehicle to a dealer. The dealer discovered the problem was the intake manifold gasket. There was a special service campaign # 01m112 that concerned the intake manifold gasket and the timing chain. However, due to the vehicle's mileage it was not included in the campaign. No repairs have been made.

39 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/01/2004

The timing chain tensioner inside of the engine failed, causing the timing chain to come loose. As a result heads and pistons inside of the engine came loose, destroying other parts inside of the engine. The ultimate result of this was that the engine seized and the vehicle lost power, making it difficult to steer at highway speed prior to getting off of the highway. Manufacturer has a waranty extension in place prior to 72,000 miles, but no recall, and considers a vehicle that looses power and cannot be completed steered as a result of an explosion in the engine not to be a safety issue!?!?!? the manufacturer acknowledged that there is a potential problem with these engines, but will only do something about it if the vehicle has symptoms. I had the first minor symptom on a Sunday afternoon, and a major problem the next day, Monday.

40 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/27/2004

1997 Explorer 4. 0 sohc purchased in 1999. Made knocking noise went to dealership several times under warranty and was told my motor was pulled and tensioner (pulley, cam tensioner) was replaced. After recieving notification from Ford of "in warranty" service bulletin, different dealer said it hadnt been replace or documented by previous service. So,it was supposedley replaced again (2 time). Still making the noise after so long, and told several times "we cant find anything wrong" kept driving. Now, I am in dealership for about 10th time and my tesnioners, possibly my timing chain, and possible other components (hopefully not motor)need to be replaced again(3time,more damage)??!!this time theres no warranty or reason why I shouldent "have to pay" so it is costing me $1600 so far. . . Possibly more if there was more damage. This must be documented because I have tried in good faith and numerous, tiring efforts to repair this from day one!do not want to have to replace motor in near future like others.

43 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/21/2003

The harmonic balancer came loose and the camshaft had broken right at the engine block. Consumer was given an option by the dealer to either overhaul the engine, with no warranty, or replace the engine, with a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty. A service technician found out that upon inspecting the harmonic balancer camshaft area that the long bolt holding the pulley to the camshaft was never tightened was able to removed with the technician's fingers. In addition, the bolt should have some markings on it consistent with an impact wrench. It was confirmed that the bolt would have been removed in order to replace the timing chain. When engine was replaced and performed additional test on vehicle, dealer found a small fuel line leak. Fuel line was repaired and made another test on vehicle. Consumer currently seeking reimbursement of all expenses incurred due to mechanical error that rendered vehicle inoperable.

48 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/26/2003

Have been hearing loud tapping noises from engine-brought it to stadium Ford and was told it was front timing chain and gaskets which they replaced for $300 (no discount) noise has continued so never brought car home from dealership same day. Left car at Ford service center (stadium auto mall rutherford, NJ) and now being told it is the lower/rear tensioner and was advised Ford has a program for this defect yet was advised that they will not cover this for me. They want me to pay $2100 minimum to repair this defect with camshaft tensioners. However this defect/problem has previously shown to cause engine dmage other than w/the tensioners. Also read many complaints about this issue where was covered. Made complaint w/Ford customer relations and was advised that car w/either 7 years or under 100,000 miles is covered. Yet the dealership will not cover it and my truck is under 7 yrs and under 100,000 miles. . . At this point has been 3 weeks and still have not come to resolution and my truck is still in the dealership service center. Still waiting for manager/owner to contact me back. . .

49 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/05/2003

2nd time this happened. . . Tensioner pulley failed (broke off) while driving on the highway. Serpentine belt came off, car overheated/engine failure/etc. First time was ay 40,000 miles. This time, at 102,000 miles. Towed to a texaco station in aberdeen, MD. Service manager says tensioner pulley failure common in Explorers. Had to replace pulley/belt. Once I returned home to NJ, I started to notice minor dripping of radiator fluid. 2 weeks later, it all gushed out, causing me to also replace my radiator. To know this has now happened twice, caused secondary damage both times, and that you get left stranded on a highway each time is very concerning.

57 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/23/2000

New engine needed. I have had Ford replace the cam tensioners, only to have had it fail now for the 3rd time in 8 mos. I am going to request the engine be replaced at dealer cost, as it was a recalled part. The warranty was extended to 72k miles back in Jan 0f '01. I now have 90k and the problem has reocurred. The problem was never really corrected, so its my opinion that Ford is obligated to correct this. Was told engine needs replacement. Have had a constant 'ticking' since purchased. Now very loud clattering and 'rapping' noises in timing chain area. I was told there are 6 chains on this engine and they only replaced the front, saying if the back ones are bad, the engine needs to be replaced. . . And that that is the problem since the first 2 replacements have gone bad again.
