2 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/01/2019

As I was driving my 2016 Ford Explorer on the highway on 08/01/2019 I experienced the vehicle start to stutter just before I was going on to the on ramp merging on the highway and after I was on the high way the vehicle started smoking from under the hood and would no longer accelerate and I could smell oil burning and pulled over and shut the car off looked under the car and saw the pile of oil underneath but the vehicle did not have the any check engine light or warnings once we towed the vehicle home I looked under the car and saw that the transmission casing was cracked pretty much in half I could actually see the gears inside the casing of the transmission I also rememberd in the past year or so the vehicle would shift very hard after braking and then getting back on the gas it happened every once in a while .

3 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2017 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/25/2018

My Explorer sport with turbo has a recurring oil leak that the dealership has attempted to repair a few times. I can smell oil burning within minutes of driving the vehicle and there are oil stains on our garage floor. My concern is that oil may be leaking onto hot engine components creating a fire hazard. The dealership has had the vehicle for over 2 weeks cumulatively and I believe this is part of a bigger problem. The gm told me today that he believes this is a freak occurrence, but in speaking with a friend of mine whose husband is a mechanic on Fords, he said the Ford knows this is an issue, but hasn't issued a recall for this model, yet. I'm not sure what to do at this point. I just know that I'm paying for a vehicle that I can't drive and the dealership doesn't know how to repair it which is very concerning.

4 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/02/2017

After accelerating onto the interstate or when I am climbing a steep hill once I decelerate and maintain a level speed the cabin fills with a "burnt oil" smell. It has been getting progressively worse and I am concerned about harmful gases.

5 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/04/2017

The tailpipe occasionally emits blue-gray smoke, as if it is burning oil. I have witnessed this when the vehicle was stationary. The passenger compartment occasionally smells like smoke. The passengers in the rear of the car tend to notice it first, and then the passengers in the front can smell it. It seems to happen when accelerating at a high rate, such as when entering a highway from an on-ramp.

6 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2014 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/05/2016

Every time you step on the gas a little more than normal, ie going up a hill and getting up to speed, the interior of the car fills up with exhaust/ burning oil smell and is quite disorienting. I dont know if there is an area that does not have a filter or if it so potent that the cabin air filter cant filter it all out.

8 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2014 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/27/2016

I have frequently experienced a strong smell of exhaust and/or burning oil in the passenger compartment. This often occurs when the a/c is running and/or under heavy acceleration or climbing steep grades. I had mentioned this a few times to 2 local Ford dealerships and was advised by one that they are aware of possible issues involving a chemical or "propane" smell, but not exhaust fumes. The other had no knowledge that this was a frequent occurrence.

9 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2012 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/01/2015

Strong exhaust (burning oil smell) coming into cabin under medium to high acceleration through ventilation ( ac on) . The smell permeates the car and burns your nostrils. I could smell it for quite some time even after existing the vehicle (as the smell remains in my nose). Even felt a bit lightheaded after existing the vehicle. I have had passengers notice this smell on several occasions also.

11 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2014 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/01/2014

Under hard acceleration, when trying to merge with interstate traffic for example, the cabin is filled with a smell of burning oil and/or exhaust. This has been noticeable since the vehicle was purchased new (picked up with < 50 miles on the odometer) and has not gotten better after 4900 miles.

12 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 02/01/2013

I just bought a 2013 Ford Explorer last week and I am having an issue with burnt oil smell getting inside the cabin even with a/c in recirculation mode. It is such a disappointment to pay over 40k for a brand new SUV and been dealing with such an issue. I have a newborn and I am afraid to take it with me in the Explorer because I guess it is harmful for anybody. First time I bought a Ford and I am not happy about my decision to switch brands. I took to the dealership and need to go back on Monday to do a system update but I don't think updating the software it's going to solve the problem. I hope someone from Ford can read this and pay attention to us because it's not healthy to be driving inhaling harmful fumes.

13 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/15/2012

The car has had consistent odor penetration into the passenger cabin since I bought it in October 2012. There is a sulfur-like or rotten-egg smell. . . Almost like natural gas. More recently I am also getting a separate odor of burning oil. The smell is most present when the car's windows are all up and the a/c system is on. The oil smell is also noticeable outside the vehicle. I am concerned that this could be related to the well-publicized issue with police versions of the Ford Explorer. I am also concerned that the fumes could be toxic and I am being exposed for long periods of time to potential carcinogens.

14 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 02/22/2011

I own a 2002 Ford Explorer with the towing package and 4. 6l v-8 motor. I have 181,457 miles on it and have maintained it well. The motor does not burn any oil and has not given me any trouble until this morning, when I started my car. This morning when I started my car, I heard a loud bang and my car engine was loud and running very rough. Upon inspection, I noticed that one of the spark plugs had been blown out of the right side cylinder head, breaking the mounting harness off of the coil for this cylinder. I tried to screw the spark plug back into the cylinder, but the threads were stripped out. After looking this up on-line, I learned that this is a common problem with Ford v-8 motors used in f-150's, expeditions, Explorers, etc. I have heard mechanics call Explorers "exploders" before, and now I know why. I have never had a spark plug blown out of a cylinder head before and after reading all of the information on-line, speaking to the auto repair manager where I have my cars serviced, this is a common problem that they have seen frequently with Ford v-8 motors. When I mentioned this to the tow truck driver today, he said that he has towed alot of Fords that had the same issue. I feel that this is a maufacturing defect and the Ford motor company should stand behind their product and do what is right. Issue a recall and/or offer assistance with vehicle repairs of this nature.
