1 Engine Failure problem of the 2017 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 04/18/2021

My 2017 Ford Explorer with 62,000 miles suffered a catastrophic engine failure while driving at highway speed. The car immediately lost power and I was almost hit from behind. I limped into a rest area where the vehicle had to be towed to a dealer. The Ford dealer service technician diagnosed the issue as a main bearing failure. The car now requires a new engine that will cost $6700 dollars and Ford has denied to provide any financial assistance even though the vehicle has only 62,000 miles on it.

2 Engine Failure problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/12/2016

Traveling 65 mph on i95 rush hour traffic. Engine failed without warning. Very, very dangerous situation. No power. Had to cross 3 lanes of heavy traffic to the breakdown lane. Ford is aware - this is a potentially deadly flaw.

3 Engine Failure problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/08/2014

While waiting in line at the local car wash the engine in my 2013 Ford Explorer sport began to rev up, then lost power and began to shake violently before the engine stalled completely. No warning lights were illuminated and no visible indications or warnings were displayed to give any indication as to what the problem might be. Several attempts to restart the engine failed and I had to push the vehicle out of line and into an adjacent parking lot. When I tried to restart the vehicle once tow truck arrived to tow the vehicle back to the Ford dealership where I purchased the truck it started up as if nothing had happened.

4 Engine Failure problem of the 2005 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 02/10/2014

Car suddenly quit and the engine fail safe light came on. Computer scan showed the throttle actuator/control was stuck closed, and could clear any codes. Vehicle would not move at all. . I had to have it towed back to my home. Engine would not run at more than an idle with the accelerator fully depressed, and there would be no change in the rpm.

6 Engine Failure problem of the 2006 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/15/2012

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while at a complete stop, the vehicle hesitated. The contact was able to accelerate into traffic however within moments, fire emitted from under the hood. The fire department was called to extinguish the fire and advised that the fire originated from the right side of the engine bay area. The fire had spread to the windshield and dashboard as well. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who did not advise the contact on the cause of the engine failure that could have led to the fire. The vehicle was destroyed. The failure and current mileage was 50,000.

7 Engine Failure problem of the 2005 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/12/2011

While driving, when I applied the brakes, the car lurched and made a noise. About 1 minute after that, a warning light that stated "engine fail safe mode" and a little wrench showed up on the left of the instrument panel. I was driving home, and the car started to speed up without my increasing the speed using the gas pedal. The car continued to lurch off and on until I got home. I researched this problem on the internet and it seemed to be the throttle body assembly that had failed. Upon taking it to the mechanic, that is exactly what is was. The car was dangerous to drive, I could have been killed had the car's speed kept increasing. The repair was $1026. 00.

8 Engine Failure problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/10/2010

O/d light flashes for a few days then at around 25 mph the gear switches into neutral and runs very rough then the car is thrown forward. Had a rebuilt transmission (we were told we were getting a brand new transmission and paid extra for it!) at 83k miles on oct 15, 2010 then Feb 5, 2011 the same exact thing happens. The dealer cannot take the truck for another 5 days and refused to give me a loner car because it is not under the warrantee. Please note: below I put in the first incident date, Feb 2011 is the second incident date. In may of 2009 I was told my engine failed at about 76,000 miles. We did buy the extended warantee and we were covered. The Ford dealership told us we were not covered. They had our truck for 3 weeks until the warentee people called the dealership and let them know it should be fixed. We also had a rental car or a loner car under the warentee. They refused to pay for a rental car and said they did not have a loaner car available. It took 4 more weeks (in total 7 weeks) to get the truck back and never paid for the rental.

9 Engine Failure problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/25/2009

The contact owns a 2004 Ford Explorer XLT. The contact stated that minutes after starting the vehicle it unwarrantly stalled. Spontaneous engine failure while driving increases the risk of vehicle crash. She towed the vehicle to a dealer but the technician could not identify the cause of the failure. However he speculated that the spark plugs may be the cause of the failure, but no repairs were made. The failure mileage was 75,000. The current mileage was unknown.

10 Engine Failure problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 02/17/2008

Engine failure. Engine code p0300. Cylinders 4, 5, 6 have weak compression. Timing chain is damaged. Dealer has previously serviced timing chain twice and after second service Ford extended engine warranty to 100k miles (now expired). Dealer now recommends engine replacement at cost of $5,500. What was once a $30,000 beautiful eddie bauer rig now has a kelly bb retail value of ~$8000, but without engine, car is a total (auction block) loss! while no one was hurt when this engine failed, it is both a potential safety hazard and yet another shock to a vehicle with a troublesome (and expensive) past, and to a loyal Ford customer who expected a better quality product. I can't help but wonder how many more 1998 Explorers are out on the roads about to loose their engines. Is 10 years too long to own a Ford? I am still pondering what to do with this vehicle which now sits as a 2-ton "bookend" in my garage.

11 Engine Failure problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/06/2007

Driving on highway at 63 mph and valve spring broke. Valve dropped into piston causing engine failure. Check engine code called for random engine misfire and code was triggered at around 2600 rpm. Prior to engine failure I have been experiencing a shudder when transmission shifts into overdrive. There is also a problem with the clutch pack in the limited slip differential that is causing a shudder when turning right or left from a dead stop. (dealership called it the parking lot shudder) I have a 02 Ford Explorer XLT with 4. 6 and 4x4 that has bad engine, transmission, and rear differential. (engine replaced).

12 Engine Failure problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/20/2007

In January, 2006, my car stopped dead on the highway. After it was towed to the dealership, we were told that a valve had broken and had been sucked into the engine, causing engine failure. Our only alternative was to have the engine replaced - which we did for over $5000. 00. The following January, (2007), after the first measurable snow fall of the year (since our engine had been replaced), the car went into a huge fishtail skid on a snowy road and after the first skid, was caught by the cable guard rail on the side of the road - causing another $5000. 00+ repair. When brought to the dealership after the accident, we were told that the 4 wheel drive electronic monitor had failed and we had no 4 wheel drive. My concern - besides the cost and inconvenience and scare of the accident is that there were no warning lights to let me know that the car's 4 wheel drive had failed. I had gotten into the car assuming that the 4 wheel drive was working (as the car goes into 4 wheel drive automatically and there are no indicator lights normally to let you know that the 4 wheel drive is working). With no indicator lights that the 4 wheel drive is working and no indicator lights that it is not working, Ford put me in a very unsafe situation. Had the cable guard rail not been there to catch the car, we would have gone over the embankment and been more seriously injured.

13 Engine Failure problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/28/2006

: the contact stated without warning the engine stalled and the steering and brakes locked up. This occurred at 55 mph, the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. A family member inspected the vehicle and determined the crankshaft busted, causing engine failure. The engine would need to be replaced at a cost higher than the value of the vehicle. The contact tried to replace it with a used engine, but was told by several mechanics that Ford manufactured a bad engine with the 4. 0 sohc, and to put a used engine would be a waist of money since it would fail again.

15 Engine Failure problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/10/2005

Car transmission was not responding correctly. After several trips to the dealer to have it checked out, the replaced the solenoid pack several weeks later warning light came on with a battery symbol and said hi temp low oil. Engine died when going to park and then again at stop light the next day. Dealer could not replicate problem. Two weeks later, engine again died with a wrench symbol and said engine failsafe mode. Dealer has had it a week and cannot replicate problem. Did find a problem with and replaced abs in computer system.

16 Engine Failure problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/06/2003

I have read 24 complaints concerning the failure of the camshaft chain on the 1998 Ford Explorers with the 4. 0 sohc engines and seen 23 technical service bulletins concerning this same problem. This type of failure can cause serious injury if this occurs while operating the vehicle due to engine failure, not to mention the fact that it also blows the engine requiring it to be replaced at a cost near $5000. Ford has acknowledged this problem and has offered replacement with mileage limitations. If this is a defect and a safety hazard causing the loss of control of the vehicle when this failure occurs ,why is this not important enough to warrant an investigation? my Ford is 4000 miles over the limit set by Ford to replace the parts in question. Although this did not lessen the danger when this failure occurred to my wife, 5 year old and 1 year old daughters while in the vehicle causing her to lose control due to the engine failure as a result of these defective parts. I was told in a phone conversation that the recall was voluntary by Ford and it is legal for them to set those limitations. This is unconceivable that they can place individuals in harms way knowingly and in an effort to save a buck, not a life , set limits to the remedy of the situation. Why are these complaints not being investigated and if they have what was the end results of this investigation? david kyde 810 third st. #5 trenton, ohio 45067 513-988-6516.

17 Engine Failure problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/20/2003

4. 0l sohc engine failed within 9,000 miles of replacing timing chain cassette under Ford program oom12. Towed to a Ford dealership and was told that I would need to pay 5,800 for a rebuilt engine and there was nothing they could do with regard to oom12 which is a known problem with the Ford 4. 0l sohc engine failing prematurely.

18 Engine Failure problem of the 2000 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/13/2001

This exlorer/eddie bauer was leased brand new. I have had nothing but problems beginning with the first week of having it (ie. Stalling, shutting off, engine failure, excessive wind noise, window/radio replacement, inaccurate fuel readings etc. . ). I have been bounced back and forth between the service and sales dept. Of the dealship. Their favorite answer to a problem is, "we are unable to duplicate consumer concern. " hello!!!!, this is why you get paid the big bucks! I am not an engineer or savy with vehicle terminology. However, I think I'm Smart enough to know there is a major problem here. I am a single parent who is concerned for myself and child's safety. This has been a nightmare for me and I am reaching out to whomever will listen to my concerns.

19 Engine Failure problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/02/2001

30 mph, camshaft breaks. Dealer says new engine required, $4500 est. Ford contacted and offers $2000 assistance. This should be a safety recall and Ford should be forced to pay for all damages b/c the forceful stop caused by engine failure could have caused serious injury to passengers or other vehicle due to skidding. This is not normal wear on a vehicle, is obviosly a Ford defect.
