I have a 1996 Ford Explorer that just had it's front seat assembly fail and had to be replaced at a cost of over $300. I notice that Ford has issued a recall notice but it was not for 1996 but 1998 - 01 year Explorers. I spoke to the dealer that made the repair and them stated that there is not much difference between the 1996 and 1998 versions of this vehicle. They pointed me back to Ford. I believe that Ford is limiting this recall to save money. They should have included the 1996 model as well as other year models as evident by the problem my vehicle just experienced. The recall notice is below for reference. Thank you. . Make : Ford model : Explorer year : 1998 NHTSA campaign id number : 03v281000 recall date : Aug 04, 2003 component: seats:front assembly:recliner potential number of units affected : 1552880.

Manufacturer's recall 03504 concerning seat recliner bolt: this vehicle is a part of a recall, but the dealer refuses to repair the problem. On July 13, 2003, I was driving my 1999 Explorer and the bolt holding the seatback up snapped and the seat flopped back. I had my family in the car. I spoke with Ford who told me to take the car to the dealer to look at the seat. Also, the car has a history of stalling while moving. It has happened on the highway several tmes and luckily has not led to an accident. I have taken it to Ford several times to discuss the problem and I have been told there is nothing that can be done until the "check engine" light comes on. They apparently can not diagnose the problem until the car's computer senses a problem.
Driver seat recline mechanism failure, frame of seat cracked, seat stuck in recline.
Seatback in my 1996 Ford Explorer (1fmdu34x1tub39240) broke without warning while driving on the interstate. Cause is a fractured bolt in the reclining seatback latch.
We have a 2000 Ford Explorer. The back portion (recliner) of the front seats were very loose. I had them inspected and found that the pivot bolt (recliner bolt) on both sides were broke off. The service department says they had never seen anything like this before and that this was very unusual. I looked under your website and found that an investigation is open as of 5/21/03 regarding similar situations. If it wouldn't have been for me being concerned about us falling to the backseat someday due to their looseness, a severe injury could maybe have occurred just like ones filed in the complaints you have on file. . I got the situation repaired (costing me $77. 13). The servie department even gave me the bolts to show what had happened. I feel this should be investigated also and maybe I should be compensated for repairing this before a sever injury did occur.
The drivers seatback in my wifes 2000 Explorer appears to be loose,it rocks fore and aft about one quarter of an inch. I am concerned that it will get progressively worse and possibily collaspe while driving.
The seat fell into a reclining position.
The bolt of my drivers seat broke on my way form vacation in navada, almost causing an accident. I fell into the back seat trying to maintain my balance I grabbed the arm rest which broke, and the bottom frame broke also. I took my car to southbay Ford in torrance CA. To make the" recall ' repairs but they refused to fix or repair my seat. Stating, the broken seat was not part of the recall. I onformed the service rep. , that the damage was due to the seat dropping backward. I called the number provided on the recall notice and made a complaint but was told the dealership had made a final decision. All I could do was to buy another seat and wait to see if another "recall" comes out and to try to get reinbursted . I had my family in my SUV with me when this bolt broke and we all could have been killed if traffic would have been heavier. Also I use my vehicle daily on my job as a mileage vehicle , having it propped up so I can drive is an hazard in itself. This vehicle is the fourth new Ford product I have purchase, and the only time I have ever had a problem will make this the last one for me.
