When I bought my Explorer, the marble noise was there. Dealer did not fix it, I took it to another dealer, where I have had two engines put in it for this marble noise. The third engine now is making the same marble/ diesel noise. They tell me that I have to live with it. I also only get 9 miles to the gallon on the hwy, and 2 1/2 around town.

At random times engine will not maintain idle speed without pressure on accelerator. Condition continues from less than an hour to over a number of days.
My vehicle suddenly started accelerating when I was proceeding down the interstate. I could slow the vehicle down somewhat by aggressively applying the brakes. However, this would just get me slowed down a little until I would release the brake. The vehicle would suddenly speed up again. I was traveling on a fairly busy stretch of interstate at the time of the incident. I luckily did not have a need to stop quickly while this problem occurred. I tried hitting the accelerator a few times to get it to stop sticking in the "wide open" position. I even tried manipulating the cruise control (which was off). After several failed attempts to remedy the problem, I started trying to think of a quick game plan to get out of this potential disaster. I am very thankful that my wife was not driving at the time and that I did not have others in the car during this nightmare. I was finally able to find a shoulder where I could pull off the road. As I said, the road was extremely busy and I was very worried about getting off the road safely with a semi-truck not far behind me. I pulled toward the shoulder and put the car into "neutral". The rpm's, which had been running extremely high for about 3 minutes, moved even higher at this point. The rpm's were pegged to the top of the gauge for about 30 seconds. As soon as I felt I was off of the roadway enough, I turned the key to the "off" position. When I got out of the car there was a horrible burning odor coming from the front of the car. I am not only concerned about the problem that may have triggered this incident, but I am also very worried about collateral damage that this undoubtedly caused. I feel that this caused an excessive amount of wear and tear to the engine and the braking system. On top of all of the physical damage done to the car, the experience was scary to say the least. My wife refuses to even get in the car at this point. Needless to say, she doesn't want my kids to ride in it either.

Engine makes throaty sound when both idling and accelerating. Dealer first recommended that the engine be replaced--then stated there was no problem and the noise was normal. I feel this is a problem that will persist and become worse and may endanger me and/or others. The manufacturer should replace the engine as originally suggested by the dealer.
After vehicle had been driven and was parked it caught on fire without prior warning. Consumer believed fire had started in the engine.

While driving about 25mph vehicle began to shake, and then cut off.
At 2700 miles motor blewout. Vehicle sounded like it was rattling in a tin can. Consumer has contacted the dealership.
Ford people say they don't know when the gaskets kits will come in, yet its been 3 months now and the vehicle runs sluggish, and is a safety hazard in traffic. Where are all the parts at.
Transmission failed twice under normal driving conditions. Lost power under certain circumstances. Same problem both times. Engine seized when vehicle hit a puddle of water at low speed. Air intake is mounted unusally low on this Explorer allowing water into the combustion chamber and causing hydrostatic lock. Ford motor company has been contacted and reads a scripted response when I have tried to get any additional information about what I consider a serious design flaw.
The engine locked up and was replaced twice, the dealership refused to pay for any repairs.
Car has been in repair facility 4 times since 10/14/99 for failures. The failures occur when the vehicle engine is disabled and shuts down while driving. This can be a serious problem for someone in cold weather climates (especiually remote ak) and if emergency road action is needed (no anti-locks or power steering if engine is off). Situation is being forwarded for ak lemon law persuant to ak statute 45. 45. 300. Currently, Ford engineers and local repair experts cannot figure out what the problem is. If you need to contact me for more information, feel free.
The air intake system points down at the wheel well, causing it to injest water during stream crossings. I crossed 3 streams at shallow depth (less than hub high), and just enough speed to make it through. On the third stream crossing, the engine died. At the dealer's, water was found in the air intake system, and in the engine, causing it to seize up, & need to be replaced.
Engine "ticks" primarily at cold startup. Problem becoming more prevelant however, now it occurs also at a warm startup. Engine also "hisses" at low speeds to idle. Rear end leaks fluid and also shudders at high speeds. "clunking" noise often heard and felt from rear end when vehicle stops.

Vehicle hesitates on re-acceleration after decelerating from 50-65 mph to a slow roll. This has happened many times since the car was first purchased. Dealer claims there is nothing wrong. I just located a service bulletin #12624 that addresses this problem.
I was slowing down to make a left hand turn at a busy intersection and my Explorer just died. As I was losing control of my steering, I coasted to a stop at the side of the road. Only because of my 30 years of driving experience and calm demeanor was I able to avoid a terrible crash. If my 16 year old had been driving, it is frightening to think about what would have happened.
I know that Ford is fully aware of the problem. The replacement parts reflect that. Those who experience failure during warranty are fortunet to save hundreds of dollars. I still as of yet not claimed my vehicle .
Engine developed noise in lower end. Ford service bulletin 13645 describes problem, "diesel or marbles in a tin can rattle" 4. 0 ohv; problem gets louder with time; concerned about failure.
While driving engine compartent caught on fire. Dealer cannot determine the cause of the fire. Please provide further information.

1998 Ford Explorer has spontaneously accelerated over 18 times in the last ten months. It surges to maximum rpm while in park, reverse, drive. Drivers foot is not on accelerator when this occurs. Driver can only save the situation by shifting into neutral and jamming on brakes or turning off car.
My Explorer has had the same recurrent problem for 16 months. I have had it to the dealer 8 times. They has numerous fixes and none of them have solved the problem. The car has to be given gas at start up. After start up it idles roughly and hestitates upon acceleration for the first mile or so. It does not exhibit this problem every day. At this point Ford has told me they do no know how to fix the problem. They gave me a copy of technical service bulletin 13335 which states no further repairs are to be done and the problem has been sent to qsf for review. Meanwhile my vehicle does not run properly and I believe it is a safety issue due to the hesitation upon acceleration. Have others complained of this problem? what can I do in order to get my vehicle running correctly? please give me any information which is available. Thank you.
While driving on highway traveling 65mph all of sudden the vehicle cuts off. No warning. No nothing. Interior lights went out, and also the rear wipers work intermittently. Contacted dealer they are aware of the problem, but not able to find whats causing the problem. Problem still exists.
Vehicle caught on fire in the engine after sitting for over an hour. Also caused the house to catch on fire.
No summary mentioned for this vehicle. Ak.
Automobile shut off in traffic, near crash because of vehicle shutting off.
After traveling east on I-90 for approximately 50 miles with the cruise control on, I exited the freeway and came to a stop. Upon making a left turn and accellerating, the engine died momentarily and then came back to speed. This seems to be a problem that many other owners have experienced. Although I was able to continue on my trip, it was an anxious moment as I was attempting to merge with traffic.
While pulling out the vehicle will hesitate which may cause an accident. Cause unknown. Been to dealer, but dealer cannot determine problem. Please provide further information.
While driving at any speed and when driving at 65 mph, the vehicle started to vibrate and shake. Also, there was a leakage coming under the vehicle near the engine. Contacted the dealer for repairs, and the vehicle was in for repairs twice. Vehicle will be taken back to the shop for additional repairs.
Problem is hesitation or engine quitting during acceleration. While this is not a common event, it happens about once per week. The dangerous condition occurs when merging into traffic on the interstate hwy. Dealers service dept. Indicates no problem is indicated by their diagnostic systems therefore Ford will assume no resposibility.
When vehicle comes to a stop the motor races with the rpm's going up to 6000, idle arm sensor replaced, but still idling high.
