1 Radiator Hose problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 02/21/2017

I already submitted one complaint today about the cabin filling with exhaust fumes while accelerating but then I was reading other issues people were having and wanted to ensure you were aware of mine as well. I had to have the cooling fans replaced because they would come to a screeching halt when you would shut the motor off. I had to have the inside of the power lift gate repainted where the motor and shock are located because the paint was cracking. The center caps on the wheels are falling in so those are going to be replaced. It is now rusting on the back of my car by the rear tail light. The hood vibrates really bad when going over 65 mph. I haven't taken it in for that yet because I can't get it to do it all of the time. It has to be windy for it to happen to me. The front door black trim pieces on the outside started to bubble so those had to be replaced. The only safety concern is the hood vibrating. The rest are just fyi's as they seem to be common problems. I bought this car brand new in November 2015 and it has had problems since the 1st month.

2 Radiator Hose problem of the 2006 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/10/2011

This 2006 Explorer eddie baurer car started making roaring sound when trying to accelerate. Tried backing off the accelerator as much as possible. Thermostat gauge temperature went to hot and displayed red and a/c started blowing cold air. Thermostat then went from hot to cold multiple times. Checked coolant levels and they were fine. The engine and car finally shut down completely and the car then overheated. Coolant blew out at the hose at the thermostat. Towed the car to a nationwide repair shop where they replaced thermostat and pressure tested cooling system but car will no longer idle and engine now has major problems. Towed the car to the Ford dealership and they are now saying it may have a blown head gasket ($2200 or more) and or engine needs to be replaced ($5600). They are going to check with Ford to see if they can provide assistance. This vehicle has 68,000 miles on it (less than 15,000/year) and should not need a new thermostat and engine. There appears to be a major problem with this year/make with radiators/thermostat issues. Please issue a recall.

3 Radiator Hose problem of the 2006 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/18/2009

We purchased our 2006 Explorer used with 61,000 in summer 2009. The dealership did a complete inspection and replaced everything we found as defective or as a recalled item. The coolant system wasn't one of these issues. Drove vehicle all summer and into the fall without issue. By late fall of 2009 vehicle had anti-freeze leak, just after the first frost in ne. Local auto service providor replaced radiator twice in one month with napa parts without remedy and then eventually they had to replace with an authorized Ford radiator to get it not to fail. Also replaced the water pump, all hoses, pullies, and fluid to make sure there were no other issues. Still leaked but minor and finally was corrected in spring of 2010. By late fall 2010, again after the first frost the vehicle was leaking anti-freeze again. Took it to Ford dealership this time where they went through the entire cooling system and replaced the thermostat and upper intake housing they said was leaking. They also flushed the entire system again and added what they deemed was the correct antifreeze for the vehicle assuring that this would stop the problem. Vehicle still leaked and we had to periodically tighten the hose clamps but by spring of 2011 the leak again stopped. Just brought vehicle back to Ford dealership fall 2011, again after the first frost. Was told the now 2 year old Ford radiator was failing at the joints between aluminum and plastic. This was the same failure as originally noted in fall of 2009. There appears to be an ongoing problem with 2006 Explorer radiators with over 50k miles. Along with environmental issues, this condition affects the transmission and the safety of the occupants if the engin runs out of coolant.

4 Radiator Hose problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/12/2009

I own a 2004 Ford Explorer that has experienced two overheating incidents, the second resulted in replacing the engine. The first incident was caused by a stuck thermostat and the second by a leaking hose between the thermostat housing and the engine. In both incidents when the engine temperature warning activated, the temperature was buried in the hot end of the gauge. In both incidents, I immediately decelerated and pulled off the road but in the second incident, the engine was already ruined. An article in the April 2010 issue of design news (made by monkeys, pg 10) about a similar incident with a Mazda led me to believe mine was not an isolated occurrence but a result of increased use of aluminum and better cooling systems. In the Mazda incident, the engine had been replaced once and was saved from a second replacement only because the driver was looking at the gauge when it suddenly pegged into the hot end. The problem is there in no warning of low coolant until the level drops below the water pump which results in a sudden and often catastrophic rise in engine temperature. The Explorer is the most heavily instrumented automobile I have ever owned yet the cooling system warning is stuck in 60s when cars had cast iron blocks, overheated gradually and were forgiving of overtemps.

5 Radiator Hose problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/26/2003

Upper intake plenum had burnt a hole in it. While driving the vehicle hesitated and the consumer smelled something burning like rubber/plastic. The hole in the plenum caused two vacuum hoses to melt.

6 Radiator Hose problem of the 2001 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/24/2001

The heater/coolant hose in the left side engine compartment is rubbing against the dipstick, wearing through the hose and potentially spraying very hot coolant under the hood.
