2002 Ford explorer. O/d light blinking. Slow gear shifting. Random jerking of car. Have read this on many websites and even people that have had a rebuild or solenoid replaced, just happens again. Is also dangerous, because once changes gears, mph jumps very high, very quickly with no control over it.

Transmission o/d light started coming on and blinking periodically with hard shifting or slipping and car lurching forward before shifting. O/d stops working after o/d light starts blinking. Had transmission solenoids adjusted last year but only helped slightly then back to slipping again. Only have 88,000 miles on vehicle with good care and no towing ever.
The problem with my 2004 Ford explorer is when you place the vehicle in reverse from any other gear (most noticeably from the position of park)there is a delay in the in ballpark of anywhere from 3-10secs before the vehicle will actually engage in the position of reverse. Today(9 Mar 09) I took it in for this problem & was told that my shift solenoid assembly needs to be replaced. What!?!?!-normal people don't just have $1,100 to shell out for this type of problem(well @ least I don't). I have actually had my vehicle @ the dealers repair shop at least one additional time for this exact same problem. Today (9 Mar 09) I was told that this shift solenoid assembly could also be the culprit of the other problem that my vehicle has-which is:when braking my vehicle engine will shutter, buck & die. Losing all engine& electrical power. If I place the vehicle back in park & restart problem will normally be gone. Both of these problems occur on an intermittent basis. My vehicle now has 77,810 miles. Since the latest occurrence of this problem I have been researching it to find that this is a common problem in this family of vehicles only be disturbed that nothing has been done to correct the situation. The performance of this family of motor vehicles is subpar. This CO & it's oem transmission is anything but reliable. What happened to protecting the public against unreasonable risks & accidents. Continued operation of this family of vehicles without a recall will inevitably lead to a more serious problem possibly even injury to a an innocent person. Please initiate an recall for this product or least start an investigation into these problems if it hasn't been started as of yet.

At 55,350 miles my 2002 Ford Explorer Sport's transmission would flare when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. When I took it to the dealership, I was told that I had a solenoid malfunction in my transmission; therefore, affecting other components of the transmission. I was told by the dealership that my transmission would need to be rebuilt. Miles wise, I still had a little under 5,000 miles until the warranty expired, years wise, I was at 5 years 74 days. Needless to say, this problem cost me $2168. 38. I don't think vehicle at 55k miles should need a rebuilding of a transmission. I think I should be reimbursed in some way for the cost. . . . . Even though I went over the warranty by 74 days.
2003 Ford explorer eddie bauer awd 4dr VIN #1fmzu84w23zb59798 under warranty - 33125 miles when in reverse experience bangs/jerks - dealer stated it was transmission shift solenoid pack and replaced 6/05 - continued to bang/jerk into reverse until approx 1 month later, vehicle would not move whether in drive or reverse, along with loud whining noises - dealer could not look at vehicle for one week at which time flat bedded at owners cost as now at 37,000 miles (out of warranty of course) Ford inspected transmission and has denied repair/replacement under warranty. At 37,000 miles one would not expect a transmission to fail. Owner escalating this issue to Ford customer service. Dealer has been great, after reading similar complaints from this website, it appears Ford corporation is in total denial of a transmission problem for 03 explorers.
