My non-commercial two wheel drive, 1997 F-150 with 59747 miles with 4. 2 v-6 engine blew its 4r70w automatic transmission . I was not able to go forward but could go in reverse. There was no sign of failure and the tranny filter and fluid had been serviced two times. It cost $ 2121. 52 to rebuild the tranny at a transmission repair shop. Ford's customer service center said there is nothing they can do and did not want to discuss anything with me or the tranny shop to find out more. Also the timing case cover gasket, brake calipers and speedometer have been replaced also.
The contact owns a 1997 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the gear lever would not shift into park. To prevent the vehicle from rolling away, the parking brake was engaged in combination with a wheel block being placed in the front and rear of the vehicle. The vehicle had been repaired twice by a specialized transmission center at the owner's expense. On January 21, 2012, the failure recurred. The vehicle had not been repaired for the most recent failure. There was a recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 97v171000 (power train) however, the recall campaign expired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 86,000. . . . Updated 02/28/13.

The shifter cable was defective. It will not go into park and the consumer had to keep slamming it.

Driving vehicle it hard shifts from 1 - 2 and sometimes from 2 - 3 at speed less than 30 mph and when down shifting from 2 - 1, brought vehicle to dick parker Ford dealer and had transmission flushed on recomendations. This did not solve the problem. Brought vehicle back and asked for it to be repaired at my cost. Was told that problem I stated was not what the mechanic was looking for. Restated the problem and took the mechanic for a test ride where he acknowledged there was a hard shift. Left vehicle with mechanic to be repaired. Next day I was told no diagnostics error codes were found and that I the owner should continue to drive the vehicle and that the problem would go away. (have dealer documentation stating this).
Intermittently the vehicle will not shift from park into gear. The dealer inspected vehicle. Please provide more information.

I'd like to know if theres a recall for this proplem, for a new truck with low miles why did the transmission go.
With transmission in "d" traveling at a constant speed, shifts back and forth between gears, then disengages. Also, with transmission in "d" when accelerating gently in 1st gear, the shift into 2nd happens after 2500 rpm.
I called Ford customer service and they didn't even ask what part failed. They were just concerned that the vehicle was out of warranty!!! while driving up my driveway, the truck suddenly slammed into 4x4 low range. This caused the engine rpm's to increase significantly and brought the truck to an almost sudden stop. This was a sudden failure and could have caused an accident if it had occurred on the highway.

While driving at approx. 55-65 mph in a heavy rain the transmission suddenly quit pulling. It was as if the transmission were shifted into neutral. By turning the overdrive off I was able to make it home in second gear. I took the truck to satcher motors for repair. They reported that the third and fourth gears had went out. This truck has never pulled a boat or trailer and has never hauled any heavy loads. This would seem to me to be a factory defect. I contacted Ford and talked to them twice but they offered no assistance. The repair bill was $1322. 80. I believe this to be a factory defect, as I have heard of other people having trouble with Ford transmissions. I believe Ford should be made to repair or replace these defective transmissions at their expence.
Manufacturer's recall 97s86 and NHTSA recall # 97v171000/auto transmission cable assembly: transmission selector shows vehicle is in park, but, in reality, it is in reverse.
