36 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2009

Steering issue with my Ford superduty f250. Since day 1 the steering while driving in a straight line tends to wander. Feels like you are driving a bumper car in traffic only hoping you do not hit anyone. Ford engineer said it was a problem they suppose to have fixed. It helped for a while aprox. 21/2 years but as the truck gets older it is starting to wander more. Has about 1-1 1/2" of play in the steering wheel. Its like driving a 1968 Ford. Have read several other complaints from other Ford buyers with same issue. Ford sent a notification a while back and stated that when this wandering occurred while driving to just slow down. Well that's all fine and dandy except my wife and I took our 2 horses to flagstaff ,az. A few weeks ago for a trail ride coming up from phoenix, az. We had to drive up through steep mountains and then come back down steep mountains. The speed limit is 75 but we were only doing 60-65 most of the time. My truck is rated to pull 12500 lbs. At one point the truck decided on its on to wander about 2 ft. To the right coming down a mountain at this point I was only doing about 60 fortunately since I was constantly having to work the steering wheel back and forth I was able to ease off the throttle and bring it back in line after awhile. Again feeling like we were playing bumper cars only this time with 2 horses in the trailer which the weight was only about 6000lbs. The horses were not moving around as they were beat from the days play. The whole ordeal really rattled us. This has been an issue for a long time and is only getting worst. I know I am out of warranty but since Ford supposedly fix it before I think it is a real safety issue. It all points to a bad steering box or bad front suspension. We would have been killed had I not got this truck under control and the horses were not safe then. Any help would be appreciated as Ford has not been much help to anyone. Their little notification to all owners of this problem should be a repair.

37 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2009

I have a 2005 Ford f250 super duty truck. It has just over 29,000 miles on it. It has now for the first time developed a severe shimmy in the front end on the highway at speeds just over 70. The first time it happened was on the interstate. Now, when I hit a bump or bridge joint, the severe shaking starts. It is very violent and dangerous in my opinion. I was able to slow and correct on a temporary basis, but it continues to do the violent shaking with the last event on July 26, 2009. It started on July 18, 2009.

38 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2009

I have a 2005 Ford super duty 4x4 with only 12900 miles on it with no modifications except a winch. Bought truck new. I live in CT. This happened 2 times once last year once this year, both in mass. Going 70 miles per hour on interstate 91 hit a bump last year slid over to the other lane because of severe steering shake. Lucky no car in other lane. This year same thing I checked tire pressure before going on my camp trip in vt tire press was 48 psi in all tires. This truck is only for pleasure. Now going home in mass. I hit a uneven sec. Of highway on 91s. It looked like a patch about 4 feet long ,the speed 70 in a 65mph zone, the truck steering shook so violently I almost lost control, but I had both hands on the wheel and that saved me. It scared the hell out of my passenger. This never happened in CT. Just mass.

39 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/13/2009

I experienced a severe and violent shaking of the front end of my 2005 Ford F-250 truck while traveling 60 mph over a slight rough patch on a highway. I lost control of my vehicle and was forced to swerve off the highway. I was almost hit by the vehicle directly behind me. This is the third time I have lost control of the truck because of this violent shaking in the last month. I have had the truck to a local inspection station and they replaced the steering stabilizer and did an alignment. This did not help. I have called the Ford dealer I purchased the truck from and they said they never heard of anyone having this problem with any Ford truck. Obviously, they are aware of the problem. I only hope there is a recall before too many people die.

40 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/05/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Ford f250. While driving approximately 65 mph driving over a small road bump; there was a violent shake and vibration. Unexpectedly, the vehicle loss control for approximately 6-8 seconds. There was a sudden release of the accelerator pedal; however, the driver was able to gain control of the vehicle and resume operation. The failure recurred at various speeds. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection; however, the technician was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on four separate occasions for the identical failures which there were no resolutions. The contact had concerns of the safety risk involved. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 200. The current mileage was 47,000.

41 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/26/2009

I have a 2005 Ford f250 sd pickup truck that has 25,000 miles on it. I has begun to experience a violent front end shaking at highway speed when going over even the smallest of bumps. You need to almost stop in the middle of the highway to make it stop. The dealer says they don't know of any problems and so does Ford. But looking on-line it is very obvious that this is a real issue and needs to be recalled. It is also referenced as "death wobble".

42 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2009

My 2005 Ford F-250 super duty powerstroke diesel crew cab pick up truck shakes and shimmies violently when the front end hits a pot hole or travels over a road surface variation. I have had 4 incidents where on the freeway traveling at speeds in excess of 65 mph the vehicle began shaking and shimmying so violently that the truck changed lanes and was beyond my ability to control the vehicle. I was forced to take emergency action and exit the roadway. On one occasion the truck struck a fence pole adjacent to the road way after hitting a groove in the road at a speed of 45 mph.

43 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2009

Driving on highway over 55 mph, I hit a small hole in the road and the truck shook to the point the wheel came out of my hands. I slowed down to re-gain control and stayed away as well as I could from potholes. I spoke with Ford a number of years ago and they dealership recommended an alignment which did no good. I have just been living with the problem until I received a letter with the exact problem. Then I find out that a lot of you have the same issue. What is it going to take before the government or Ford is going to take action a death!!!.

44 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2009

Driving at speed. 2005 Ford F-250 violent front end death wobble, dealer said it needed alignment, then said it was my tires, with new tires it still did it. Dealer said that it was okay. Nothing wrong. Until yesterday while driving to inter freeway,at 45mph slight rough road sent my Ford truck into violent death wobble almost caused an accident, by hitting concrete barrier. Lost total control of my truck. I've contacted legal counsel to see what my options will be, also informed to make contact with dealer ship to see what they intend to do. I have extended warranty on my truck. Does this fall under warranty? or law suit?.

45 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2009

Lose of steering do to poor design of Ford F-250 and f-350 solid front axle with springs. From 2005 to present. I have new tires and rims, balanced, had front end checked for alignment, my truck like so many others are having sever front end shimmy do to the poor design on Ford trucks. I have contacted legal advice from the advice of other government agencies. The attorney generals office, bbb, and the consumer protection agency. This is my second complaint about this matter, and im a little upset to keep getting the only response you and the Ford CO. Can come up with, tire pressure!!! come on you know its the poor design of there front ends. I've spent thousands to help deal with matter to no better results. So from here I will seek legal help to protect my family and myself from possible severe injury or death. I hope Ford motor CO. Will fix the problem with there front ends of there F-250 and f-350 sd pickups from 2005 to present. I hope it doesn't take someone getting killed before Ford says they need to fix there trucks. Like they did with there bad tire situation on Ford explorer.

46 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Ford f250 super duty. While driving above 60 mph, the contact noticed that there was vibration in the front wheel, causing the vehicle to shake excessively. The vibration was consistent and would occur each time the vehicle was in use. Also, as the contact would increase the speed, it seemed impossible to control the vehicle. The dealer informed the contact that they were aware of the issue and that a technical service bulletin was issued. The contact did not inform the manufacturer and the vehicle was not repaired. The current and failure mileages were 82,000.

47 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2009

I currently own a Ford f 250 pickup truck, when I am driving 40 to 50 mph my truck starts to shack violently. I have read many forums on this and many people are having the same problem . Why has Ford not recalled my truck to fix this problem when they know there is a problem? must somebody get hurt or worse killed due to Fords neglect of this problem?.

48 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2008

While driving on the highway at around 60 mph I hit a small bump in the road, a normal seam in the macadmn. My truck started to shake violently. I had very little to no control of the steering, and the braking was also very poor. The truck shook so bad that it impaired my vision all I could do was let off the accelerator and hold on to the steering wheel. The truck drifted into the left lane while slowing. Around 35-40 mph the shaking went away and the truck acted normal. I pulled off the road and into a mall parking lot and checked under the truck for anything obviously wrong and found nothing. I drove my truck home about 10 miles no more problems. What a very scary episode.

49 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2008

TSB front end oscillation iirc. Or as known on the internet as the death wobble (which seems very fitting as the truck goes completely out of control, it feels as if the whole front end is coming apart!)? severe shaking at high speeds or on rough roads-just driving along and all of the sudden severe shaking occurs so severe that this could cause an accident, almost like both front tires blow out at the same time, severe steering difficulties when this happens, if you come to a complete stop and then take off it stops?intermittent but incredibly dangerous! has happened 3 times within the last 2 weeks?once on a gravel road, once on a road with potholes and once on rt43 smooth as glass road at a speed of 65mph?this is always a sudden onset- no warning?this needs to be addressed, my children were in the car when we were going on rt43. . This could have killed us had it been a two lane road as we were just doing the speed limit of 65mph and all of the sudden the front end is all over the place and out of control! it was almost impossible to control. . . I had the brakes to the floorboard and the front end of the vehicle was jumping all over the road, had there been a car beside us we would have collided with them! this is all over the internet as the death wobble but had it not happened to us we would not know about it! there should at minimum be a warning this could get people killed if it is not addressed. . . Please, investigate this on the f250 ours is a 2005 but I have read that many others are having the same problem! this is a hazard! 11-2-08 was the most recent incident the other two times happened within 2 weeks before! this is a scary situation, I am just thankful that there weren't a lot of other cars on the road or I fear that I wouldn't be around to write this complaint. . . It is this severe. . . No exaggeration! this needs to be addressed!.

50 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/29/2008

We have continuous issues with the shimmy and uncontrollable shake in the front end of our 2005 f250 super duty (gas). At speeds of 55 and higher, the truck will shake uncontrollably off the road at the slightest uneven or bump in the road. We have taken it to dealerships numerous times and the only thing they have done is to replace the damper assembly on June 6th. Problem still exists and seems to be more erratic and frequent.

51 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2008

2005 f250 steering wobbles when hitting pot holes. This has happened 4-5 times. Wobble is so bad had to pull over to complete stop nearly caused and accident.

52 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/27/2008

The contact owns a 2005 Ford F-250. While driving 55 mph, the front end of the vehicle began to shake. The contact slowed the vehicle down and the tires blew out. The vehicle veered to the left and into oncoming traffic. The contact crashed into a mountain and the vehicle rolled over twice. There were no injuries. A police report was filed. The current and failure mileages were 65,197.

53 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2008

I own a 2005 super duty power stroke and when I hit a pot hole or when I'm taking a turn to the left from 40 mph to 50 mph my truck gets the death wobbles until I hit the brakes and get down to about 15-20 mph. I don't even like driving it cause you don't know when it's going to happen. It's kind of sad when you pay so much for a nice truck and your afraid to drive it. I think Ford needs to have a recall on these trucks before someone gets killed, it really is that bad!.

54 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2008

When driving on the highway above 50mph the Ford 2005 f250 super duty begins to shake violently to the point of loosing control. They only why to stop the shaking is to slow down immediately and force any following traffic to slam on their brakes too. The items that bring on this shake (oscillation) are the following. The problem occurs when: 1. On a highway going over 50 mph 2. Hiitting a bump in the road. Once a bump is hit above 50mph, the oscillation (left to right) begins. I have been in several incidents were the cars behind me must maneuver or stop and risk running into other vehicles.

55 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2008

The contact owns a 2005 Ford f250 sd. While driving 70mph on the inside left lane, the vehicle drove over a small bump in the road and began shaking uncontrollably. The contact had difficulty steering the vehicle and was unable to drive into the emergency lane. After shaking for 3 to 5 minutes the vehicle began operating normally. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle and stated that there was a technical service bulletin to place a damper in the suspension. The vehicle was repaired and the failure no longer exist. Shortly after the failure occurred, the contact received a warning letter stating that maintaining the proper tire inflation level would avoid the failure from recurring. The failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 80,000.

56 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2008

Driving speed limit, on highway 241, road bump/asphalt new vs old transition point, other time minor pot hole, once while making a right banked turn on the 241, another time while driving on 57 went over a road patch. Severe front shake until I stop, causes cars around to drive defensively and I am trying to keep control. Wife is afraid of driving truck and is concerned for my safety, it is very scary when it happens, the whole truck shakes like a blown tire until I stop. Changed steering dampener, adj steering box play, check tire pressure. Only happened once since repair, but I drive very cautiously and slower than most traffic now. Can't sell truck because I would not do this to someone else.

57 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2008

2005 Ford F-250 super duty, started at @ 25,000 miles in 2008 and still happens today. Happens when traveling over 60 mph, when you hit any small bump in the road, the front suspension started to shake uncontrollably. It is very hard to control the truck. This happens all the time on the freeway. The tire pressure was correct at the time of the first incident, the tires were balanced and the lug nuts were torqued to Ford specs. Talked to the Ford dealer and they denied any knowledge of a similar problem. After a few hours research online, this problem is well documented and frequent with the Ford super duty line from 05"-08". It seems to be an engineering defect and Ford is well aware of the problem, but it does appear that Ford has offered any remedies. The NHTSA also knows of the problem. I viewed four NHTSA videos that demonstrated the identical problem that I am experiencing with my truck. I have found no action on the part of the NHTSA. This problem needs to be acknowledged and corrected before someone is killed.

58 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2008

While driving at aprox. 70 mph. And hitting uneven road the truck shimmies violently. I have to slow to about 40mph. Before it stops. I was told I have the wrong tires on the truck. The tires on the truck are the ones on it when I purchased it.

59 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2008

Front end instability, extreme vibration, loss of steering at highway speed after hitting rough pavement. Have had vibration and bounce in front end since vehicle was purchased new Dec 2004. Repeated return to dealership but unable to find point cause. April 25, 2005 cruise control at 75mph on i4 florida rough asphalt triggered severe shimmy and vibration, loss of steering (unable to pull to safety lane). Control regained only by braking in busy highway speed traffic until vibration ceased. Tires are new, rotated at 3,000 and kept at factory pressure. These events have occurred sporadically since purchase in Dec 2004.

60 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2008

When traveling at highway speed and traveling over uneven surfaces or braking from highway speed over uneven surfaces the front end begins to shimmy/oscillate and the steering wheel begins to shake violently. This is occurring more frequently.

61 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2008

Violent shaking after hitting pot holes or expansion joints on highways at speeds ranging from 55 to 75mph. The shaking causes a complete loss of steering control and will not stop until slowing below 40mph. After reading several posts online I see this is an ongoing problem with these trucks and needs to be fixed before someone gets killed.

62 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2008

I have a Ford F-250 pick up. Since I bought the vehicle new, it has had a hard suspension. I thought it was because it was beefier than the f-150s I have driven all my life. The 250 however, will shimmy and vibrate uncontrollably after going over a bump or highway seam at speeds between 50 and 75 miles per hour. The dealer told me it was normal and Ford sent a letter saying it may be the air pressure in the tires. It is neither. This truck is highly unsafe to drive.

63 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2008

In driving my Ford F-250 pick-up, I have experiences severe vibrations/oscillations at high (over 60mph) speeds. This occurs when the truck runs over a small imperfection in the road. These oscillations are quite severe - forcing emergency leave change/loss of control. When the truck slows down to about 40, the oscillations cease. This shaking is so severe it has damaged the paint on the hood due to the hood sloshing back and forth. It is definitely life-threatening. The Ford dealer is at a loss, they do not know what to do.

64 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/19/2007

The contact owns a 2005 Ford F-250. While driving 65 mph, the vehicle shook violently and became difficult to steer after driving over a bump in the road. The contact stated that it was not a normal front end shake and continued driving home at a lower rate of speed. The dealer rotated the tires, but that did not correct the failure. The manufacturer advised her to call NHTSA and to take the vehicle back to the dealer. The current mileage was 30,400 and failure mileage was 18,000.

65 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/23/2007

Front end shakes violently after hitting pot holes or bumps in the road. To the point where a collision is highly possible.

66 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/25/2007

I have a 2005 Ford f250 super duty fx4 pickup that I purchased today. On the way home, at about 65-70mph, I hit a bridge joint which sent the front end into an extremely violent wobble. I had to slow down to about 20mph for it to go away. When I got home, I researched the problem on the internet, and found it to be a very common problem. I believe that Ford has issued a TSB for this problem, but I feel that a recall should be issued because of how dangerous the issue is. The consumer should not have to pay to redesign a factory engineering problem. The wobble was so bad that the truck moved into the next lane.

67 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2007

2005 f250 4x4 superduty 5. 4l crew cab, has very dangerous front wheel bounce on highway or near highway speeds(50-70)mph, the truck was in stock configuration when this started, approx. 26,000 miles have since put lift kit on truck and has helped but the bounce tendency is still there. Larger wheels and tires have helped out lot, with the factory wheels/tires on its a for sure thing when on highway and come across series of bumps or a pothole. I avoid the highway when possible due to the very violent bounce when this occurs, please have Ford fix this problem. Selling this truck will not fix problem, and I have tried dealer suggestions I. E air pressure, alignment. . . Waiting for Ford to correct this with recall, but none that I'm aware of, will death to a motorist prompt recall? I hope not, thank you.

68 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2007

I have a 2005 F-250 that has a violent front end shake at around 60mph after hitting a rut or small pothole, problem does not go away until I slow down. Taken to dealer and they: "installed updated steering dampener and bracket per 07-10-10 retorqued suspension fasteners. . . . R&r long and short drag link check toe recenter steering wheel. The same problem developed shortly after. I will be taking to dealer again.

69 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2007

Bought 2005 Ford f 250 4x4 crew cab with gas engine. 25000 miles on truck during test drive I drove across railroad trucks at 60 mph truck begin to shake violently until brought to complete stop. Drove truck over rr tracks again at same speed truck didn't react the same tried it again still truck would not shake. After sale leaving el paso texas on I 10 interstate about 50 miles out going over bridge at posted speed limit of 80 mph truck again started to shake violently until slowed to stop. This truck became uncontrollable and almost caused a wreck on a major highway. I took the truck back to the dealer and cancelled the sale. I am reporting this because I have heard of several f250's with this same problem and Ford does nothing to fix them. VIN number on truck.

70 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2007

Violent shaking in front end and steering wheel when traveling at highway speed and hitting a bump in the road. Loss of steering control until slowing under 45mph.
