This vehicle since the last pcm update when it goes into "clean exhaust filter" mode will shoot out heavy smoke for 2 miles. This is an environmental pollution and also a safety hazard for drivers behind the vehicle. This problem has been ongoiing for months. Dealer states it is"normal".
2008 Ford F-250xl, 5. 4l, auto. Engine runaway. While stopped at a stop sign the engine increased it's speed dramatically on it's own. Even with the brakes fully applied the vehicle still moved into a 4 way intersection. I shifted to neutral and the rpm's increased even more before the engine returned to normal operation. 10 minutes later I started the vehicle at my bank and placed the transmission in rev. The engine again rapidly increased the rpm's and I barely kept the vehicle from rocketing away backwards by holding my foot fully on the brake. I tried neutral but the rpm's surged even higher so I had to turn off the ignition. I restarted the vehicle and it operated normally on my trip home. The truck has a rubber floor and no mats. My foot was definitely on one pedal at a time. These malfunctions were totally out of the blue and very dangerous. Someone could have been injured or killed.
1/1/10 isn't the first smog-out, but definitely the worst & most dangerous. While decending from the top of the mountain in gatlinburg in bumper to bumper traffic where it took 45-60 mins to go 2 miles, the exhaust cleaning was blowing suffocating and blinding blue smoke continuously. Then going through town where people are walking up & down beside the road (still in bumper to bumper traffic) it was still smogging the people walking and people driving behind me could not see. If a motorcycle or person ended up beside us when we had to stop for traffic lights, they would have been severely burned. It continued to clean down to pigeon forge for a total of 1-1/2 to 2 hours. Ford engineer was supposed to recalibrate to make sure it didn't clean if under 35 mph, but it does it all the time, sometimes day after day for hours.
