Ten problems related to steering wheel vibrate have been reported for the 2011 Ford F-250. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
On the 17th of October 2019 driving down the interstate from nebraska to colorado my truck it would hit a bump or seam in the road and it would start to shake the steering wheel would shake the truck was shake vigorously until I had slowed it down to less than 20 it would quit this happened to me about 7 times from then on I just kept speed down get off that I got off the interstate and my kept my speed down to under 60 and it did not happen again I did take it to the dealer to be fixed, at my expense, I bought new tires I had the alignment done and everybody tells me this will fix what they call the death wobble but it was very scary and my truck only has 45000 miles on it! I just wanted to report this problem it is not safe at all I hope it doesn't happen again.
Let me start by saying that my truck does not have any aftermarket changes - it is completely stock/oem. At highway speeds (60mph+), the front end of my truck sometimes shudders severely after going over small road surface changes such as joints/seams in the highway. At first it only occurred during sweeping highway turns, but it has progressed to happening on straights as well. The shudder is so severe that the steering wheel nearly shakes out of my hands and things in the stowage spots on the doors are shaken out. I now have to slow to <30mph in order to settle the front end which is obviously extremely dangerous to have to suddenly do on a highway. The initial event occurred at roughly 80k miles and only happened a few times a year. I now have 130k miles and the problem has occurred 3 times within the last month. I've recently replaced all shock absorbers and the steering dampener, had an alignment and the tires balanced and rotated - to no avail. The truck is currently in the shop where they are trying to identify the specific problem but have told me this is relatively common among Ford super duty trucks. After doing some research online I have found numerous online communities discussing this problem that has apparently been occurring with Ford super duty trucks for over a decade and is still occurring on new units with as few as 15k miles.
When driving on a freeway at 65 mph, the truck encountered a slight bump and the front end started shaking violently, including the steering wheel shaking back and forth violently. The truck wandered out of the lane due to loss of control of the steering. The shaking only stopped after slowing to about 35 mph. The failure repeated itself a few minutes later before I could pull off the highway. This occurred previously (6 months / 3000 miles ago). The Ford dealer suggested I take the vehicle to an independent suspension mechanic. He inspected the truck and said all the front end components were fine but he noted that the steering damper had about a 1" dead zone. On his recommendation I replaced the steering damper and the factory shock absorbers. . Read more...
My husband was driving through a road construction work zone when suddenly the steering wheel started shaking violently and jumped out of his hands . He lost control of the truck . The other drivers were able to compensate for the out of control truck and an accident was avoided . I went on to research this issue . I found a forum with many others having the same issue . My husband took it to the local dealership where they say they have no knowledge of such issues . They told him it was poor tire pressure or out of alignment . My husband had both checked and there was no problem . I fear it is just a matter of time before there is a severe accident due to this issue . The others say the vehicle continues to do the" death wobble" as it has been coined online . Please have someone look into this problem . I have also emailed Ford motor company .
I was driving approximately 45 mph when I hit a rough area in the asphalt during a slight left turn. After hitting the rough area, the truck and steering wheel began shaking violently. I had to almost stop before the shaking would stop. I pulled off the road thinking that maybe a tire was fixing to fall off but everything was fine. Now every time I hit a rough area on the road I worry that it will happen again.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford F-250 super duty. The contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the steering wheel began to shake abnormally. The failure progressed until the shaking became violent. The vehicle was taken an independent mechanic where the wheels were balanced however, the failure recurred. The contact made arrangements for the vehicle to be diagnosed by a dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 46,000.
Uncontrolable steering wheel shake when you hit a bump at 55 mph . Truck has been in the shop 4 times with this problem. Ford cant seem to fix it. Truck is stock no modifications. Someone is going to get hurt with this problem.
As I was driving on a road at a speed that was greater than 50 mph I hit a bump in the road. The front end of the truck and the steering wheel began to shake so violently that I thought they were going to fall off. This had happened beginning around late November early December of 2012. It did it several more times and I contacted the dealer about this problem. The truck was serviced and nothing in the front end was found to be damaged and it was recommended that I replace the tires on the truck. The tires were replaced and the truck has been fine for the past year. On 10/30/13 I again was driving the truck at a speed greater than 50 mph and hit a bump in the road and the front end again began to shake violently. I have been pin this shaking down to the following conditions. It will shake if you are driving at highway speeds, you hit a bump in the road (this bump does not have to be big it could be as simple as driving from the roadway onto a bridge deck) the front end will begin to shake and very quickly get violent. The only way to stop it from shaking is to slow the vehicle down to a speed that is less than highway speed which will cause the vibration to stop and you can then return to highway speeds. This has happened several times and I do not have the exact dates that it occurred prior to changing the tires. However it is beginning again and the first time was on the 30th of October 2013.
I drove over a bridge on an interstate at approximately 65 mph. The vehicle and steering wheel began to shake violently and uncontrollably. It felt as though all four tires blew out and I had no control over steering whatsoever. I had to slow almost to a stop and pull over on the shoulder of the road.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford F-250 sd. The contact was driving 40 mph over a pot hole when the steering wheel began to shake abnormally. The contact waited until the shaking ceased independently however, the failure recurred frequently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised that the failure was caused by the tires and recommended having a front end alignment performed. The contact stated that all four tires were replaced and an alignment was performed however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 10. The current mileage was 31,000.
