36 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2002 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 03/16/2012

On 03/16/2012 at 10:30pm while on my way home from work, I came to a stop at a stop sign. Truck was running fine. As I pulled away from the stop sign and accelerating I heard a loud pop and what sounded like an exhaust leak. I immediately pulled over and looked under the hood. I found that the coil on the #3 spark plug was out and the exhaust sound was coming from the hole where the spark plug should have been. Only living 2 miles from work, I drove the truck home and parked it til morning. In the morning I went out and tried to put the plug back in and realized there were no threads to thread the plug into. This is very disconcerting realizing that there will be some major work needing to be done on the truck before I can drive it again. Not to mention cost. Upon some internet research, I have found that this has been a major problem with these Ford trucks and that Ford is refusing to do a recall on this matter. I just purchased this truck on 03/12/2012 and cannot drive it any more. I will not drive it any more due to the safety aspect of the fuel vapors coming out of the hole and possibly catching fire from the spark plug wire still arcing. Least of all that it will cause more damage to the engine before it can be repaired. Thank you for your time in this matter and I am hoping that something can be done in the near future that will make Ford do a recall on these trucks and get the problem fixed once and for all.

37 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2006 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 02/08/2012

Upon acceleration, from stop at a red light, vehicle hesitated (stalled) to accelerate. Upon acceleration, after several seconds, thick cloud of black smoke appeared from exhaust pipe, and white smoke discharged from engine oil (fill) tube. Vehicle continued with described problem(s) for the rest of the trip, which was approximately ten (10) minutes, and has continued with described performance problems for many days since. This problem arose after spending over $2000 to have similar engine problems fixed, at Ford authorized dealership. Upon contacting Ford motor company, directly (for financial assistance on fixing the problem for the second time), I was informed that there would be no such assistance granted. Period.

40 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2010 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 08/08/2011

2010 F-250 40k miles has been in and out of the shop since purchased 14 service repairs and 8 of the 14 repairs have been major, transmission was leaking and down shifting while on the highway, had to be repaired, cruise control went out while on the freeway and the truck lost all power while on a highly congested highway, it has had the same problem a few times now, defective instrument cluster fuel, speedometer. Egr valves went out and stalled in the middle of a intersection with a 30 foot trailer, which that happened twice, Ford says well this has never happened to any other vehicles that they have dealt with. This has reoccurred multiple times, which causes traffic congestion and could possibly result in major issues or accidents, truck was purchased to haul a trailer and we do not trust it at all since it has broke down so many times. When you press the accelerator loaded or unloaded it has a hesitation before it goes, sometimes it takes awhile to get up to speed, fuel injectors have been replaced also. When the cleaning exhaust system is on it starts to decelerate and you lose a good amount of power.

41 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2011 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 07/31/2011

Intermittently between 35 mph and 85 mph, the vehicle will start to shudder for 5-15 seconds and during this time, sometimes will be accompanied by loss of throttle. It generally happens during or shortly thereafter a regen / cleanining exhaust filter message appears. The "shudder" could also be described as a "lugging" sensation. After confirming this problem with a vehicle data recorder, Ford's response to my dealer was "do not attempt repairs at this time, engineering is investigating. ".

42 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2008 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 05/01/2011

The contact owns a 2008 Ford f250 super duty. The contact stated that the vehicle would lose power while driving up an incline or sporadically at any speed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who performed a diagnostic and test drove the vehicle, but was unable to duplicate the failure. The dealer replaced the exhaust sensor and the instrument panel cluster but the failure was not corrected. The manufacturer was contacted and a claim was filed. The failure mileage was 29,000 and the current mileage was 33,000.

43 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2010 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 03/07/2011

The dpf / cleaning exhaust filter initiated without warning while I attempted to cross a busy intersection, thus, drastically reducing the boost and power to the vehicle when it was absolutely essential. The drastic loss of boost and power put me in imminent danger due to on coming traffic and my vehicle and I were in the broadside position. A motorist had to take evasive action to avoid slamming into the side of my vehicle by riding onto and over the median. I was lucky enough to retrieve his name and phone number. I brought the vehicle to the team Ford las vegas for repair, however, the truck checked out according to Ford's specification. On 3/10/11 service manager bob rahala contacted Ford consumer relations in my presence and the representative stated "Ford is aware of the problem and we are working on it; you will be contacted within 48 hours with the further information". I received the call from Ford consumer relations 23 hours later and the representative stated "the truck is operating according to spec, there is no problem". Please be advised, Ford is aware of the boost and power loss when the cleaning exhaust filter mode is in effect. My Ford case number is 0527870691 which Ford closed. This is a major safety issue that requires action immediately.

44 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2008 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 03/05/2011

Re-occuring problem with my 2008 Ford F-250. The truck apon acceleration surges at 2800-3000 rpm's and blows white smoke out of the exhaust pipe. This only happens during high humid, or rainy days, or while the truck is operating in a steady state of dirving for several hours. If you pull off the freeway, and then try to accelerate on the entrance ramp the truck stumbles and looses acceleration. I have had the truck in the dealer several times to try to find the problem, but they were not sucessful. There are no codes being displayed in the computer. This is going to cause somebody to get run over trying to enter the freeways. Ford is not trying to solve the probles eighter.

45 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2001 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 02/22/2011

I am an owner of a 2001 F-250 super duty, I have had the problem with spark plug ejection from the heads of my motor. The first time this happened was with the oem plugs still in the motor, the second time I had the blow out repaired already and all plugs were replaced but yet again a little over a year later the plug in another hole blew out. This time I had all holes patched with a stainless steel insert. Both times I had to pay well over $50. 00 for towing and the last repair bill was in excess of $800. 00. I am a full time student and single father I do not have the resources to pay for constant repairs because of an engineering problem with oem equipment, from what I have seen on the internet and told by my mechanics this is happening to almost every vehicle with these types of motors. Thank you for your time and effort in looking into this matter.

47 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 12/21/2010

In my 2000 Ford F-250 super duty 6. 8l v-10 the spark plug blew out of the head causing a very dangerous situation. My truck lost some of its power which was obviously a problem being that I was on the freeway during rush-hour. When I popped the hood, I was amazed to find the spark plug sitting on top of the valve cover with a hole underneath it where exhaust and gas was being ejected rapidly. Had I not turned off the engine quickly, I could have had an engine fire on my hands on the side of the freeway. Ford refuses to fix the problem even though I have done research and found countless other owners of the same vehicle with this exact same problem. They need to be accountable for this problem before someone tries to drive their truck to a repair shop without disconnecting the fuel injector starting a fire under the hood.

48 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2008 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 12/11/2010

2008 f250 super duty diesel exploded (neighbors' description) while parked. We had just returned from towing a skid loader back from a job site and approximately half an hour later, neighbors called to say that our truck had exploded. The fire dept was on the scene when we arrived and the vehicle appears to be a total loss. We had owned and used the truck for 9 days and it had performed without problem during that time which included a 400 mile trip from the point of purchase in PA to our home location in columbus OH. No damage to property other than to the vehicle itself.

55 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2008 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 08/20/2010

Subject owns a 2008 f250 w/ 6. 4l diesel. At random, when attempting to accelerate, pull onto a highway, or otherwise increase speed, vehicle will lose power and stumble. White smoke has been noticed from the exhaust during at least one of these incidents. Ford has TSB 08-25-1 which attempts to address this problem, but vehicle is past warranty, and other owners have reported the problem persists even after having the TSB performed. This is a safety issue, on August 20, 2010 we were pulling a 10,000 trailer and went to pass a slower vehicle. Our vehicle lost power while passing (stumble/smoke) for approx 5 seconds, before regaining power. We could have had a terrible accident if there had been oncoming traffic present and/or power had not returned. Problem is able to be duplicated.

56 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2008 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 08/10/2010

On 8/10/2010, after driving my 2008 F-250 on interstate 5 for about 6 hours continuously at approx. 70mph in cruise control mode, I overrode cruise control to accelerate and pass a vehicle. As I returned to the right side driving lane, the vehicle failed to reduce speed and continued to accelerate in an uncontrolled fashion. With heavy braking I was able control the vehicle and bring it to a stop on the highway shoulder where I shifted it into neutral and cut the ignition off. A restart of the vehicle resulted in an immediate run-up in rpm which could only be controlled by shutting down the engine. No engine or other warning lights were displayed. By opening the hood and manually resetting the air filter contamination sensor on the air intake duct, it was possible to restart the engine and have it operate normally. I did not again use cruise control. This is a repeat of the condition previously reported in id# 10279704. The common elements of all three instances of occurrence are that the engine has been operated at 65-70 mph for approx. Six hours, cruise control is engaged, and the engine is either in or has just completed an exhaust regen cycle . Ford appears to be unable or unwilling to identify or address this situation, but it continues to be a severe safety hazard.

57 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2004 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 05/23/2010

Ficm on my 6. 0 super duty is causing running problems this is just another in a long list of issues Ford is aware of, if the truck was to stop running during freeway speeds this may cause serious injury to my family due to loss of braking and steering. I use this truck to tow a travel trailer and at this time I do not feel this truck is safe enough to do this. The local dealer wants $1200. 00+ to repair this well known problem. I am not in the position to replace this vehicle. Other problems replaced 4 egr in 50,000 miles.

58 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2002 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 05/02/2010

Well guess what, it's me again with f250 4x4 with the triton motor. Got in it made it about 1/10 of a mile, it started shimming and running rough again and it died. I'm afraid to start it because of the spark plug ejecting already once and I'm afraid it's going to do it again and catch fire. Ford if this keeps up u will have a lawsuit and you can bring in your big lawyers but I guarantee you will not win.

59 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2001 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 03/16/2010

My 2001 f 250 super duty pick up with a 5. 4 motor spit out the number 3 spark plug. It caused me to have my vehicle towed, the # 3 coil pact replaced along with all the spark plugs and the coil pact boots. I heard a loud pop which caused me to pull over immediately , it sounded like a real bad exhaust leak. I have never had anything like this happen to me in 28 years of driving and working on vehicles. The dealer have to put in a heli coil and replace parts as stated.

60 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2002 Ford F-250

Sparkplug ejected out of motor on right side and another sparkplug on the left side keeps missing out because of oil in it. I can't keep fighting repairs I'm still paying on it. From what I'm hearing there is several motors doing this. I would like to see this problem solved please or Ford can pay my tow bills. My cruise control quit working. I have a rumble in rear end when turning corners. I have had it looked at, different things fixed and no repair facility can figure it out. I work 60 minutes away and I can't keep getting stranded in it and I'm very tired of it.

62 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2008 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 01/12/2010

Driving around and diesel fuel smell came into the cab of the truck and smoke from engine compartment. This truck has a 6. 4l job 1 diesel. We had the truck towed to the Ford dealership because driving it makes me sick to my stomach and light headed. Ford tells us it will happen every 100-600 miles and last 10-40 minutes each time during regeneration. Ford says this is a 'normal operation characteristic of the vehicle'. The dealership referenced TSB 09-16-9 and took the time to highlight certain areas. #1 - I was not in cold ambient temperature at the time the smoke was coming from the engine compartment and #2 - this is not a brand new truck although we do have low mileage. How can this be considered normal if it had never happened before and now makes me sick when I drive the truck? the smell is still faintly in the headliner of the truck. What is in this stuff that made me light headed and sick to my stomach?.

63 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2010 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 01/05/2010

When driving at highway speeds for at least 15-20 minutes, then when you slow down or come to a stop. The problem manifests itself. Engine begins to hesitate, sputter, shake and leads to a total loss of power and begins to blow tons of white smoke, I , mean a cloud of smoke. This happens every time it is humid or raining out and even in between. It has happened from day one. Just picture this scenario playing out, as you attempt to cross a busy intersection, passing or getting on a highway, pulling a trailer and climbing a hill or mountain totally dangerous condition. There are thousands of people with the same complaint of the same condition manifesting itself. The evidence is on the internet diesel forums and blogs and Ford says that there is nothing wrong with the vehicle. This condition does not generate any trouble codes or lights on the dashboard, what a nightmare : vehicles affected are Ford F-250,350,450 etc superduty 6. 4l diesel engine it is a shame that you pay upwards of $ 50,000. 00 or more for these vehicles and they are potentially life threatening and the manufacturer only makes excuses for an obvious model wide problem. The problem/ condition has manifested over 25 times in my vehicle in only 6 months of ownership. I am scared to pass, pull trailers, cross intersections because this condition leaves the car powerless for multiple seconds at will repeatedly. We need your help, to force the manufacturer to come clean and own up to this defect once and for all it affects 2008-2010 model years, they have a TSB for this on the first build of vehicles, there are 3 builds I believe, however the problem is still present in the later builds. Wow unbelievable.

64 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2004 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 12/15/2009

I have a 2004 Ford f250 super duty with a 6. 0 diesel. The egr cooler was replace twice under warranty and with the truck now out of warranty with 111,000 miles on it, the egr cooler went out once more and Ford would not help me out on the repair so I had to pay for it myself. There is a huge problem with the 2003 through 2005 6. 0 diesel. It has happened to thousands of owner. Owners of these vehicles are being forced to bypass the egr cooler, there by making it inoperable. This is in violation of epa standards and Ford should be forced by the government to recall these vehicles and repair them right. This is not only a fairness issue; it is a clean air safety issue.

65 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2005 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 11/25/2009

I have a 2005 Ford f250, 6. 0l diesel. This power plant is used on several Ford model vehicles and has an inherent problem with it's egr system. When the egr system fails, the vehicles looses all throttle response. Resend 03/05/10. On November 25th, 2009, I was stop at an intersection waiting to merge onto a very busy highway. When the time came to merge onto the highway, my vehicle fail to accelerate, it crept into the path of on coming traffic and I had to perform an advasive maneuver (immediately pull off the highway) to protect me and others from a potential accident. This situation has happen to me on more then one occasion and is intermittent. When I reported this to my dealership, they performed a procedure to clean out the carbon buildup within the intake system and told me that this was considered routine maintenance, this is not mentioned anywhere in the operators manual. I believe this is a public safety issue that Ford should recognize and provide a fix.

66 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2001 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 11/23/2009

I own a 2001 Ford f250 super duty with a 5. 4l triton v-8 engine, automatic transmission, 2wd, 137 inch wheelbase, standard emission, with no aftermarket modifications and approximately 114,000 miles. I was driving at approximately 60mph when I heard a loud bang from under the hood, the engine lost power and sounded like the exhaust had come off the engine. Upon inspection, I discovered that the number 8 spark plug had blown completely out of the engine and damaged the ignition coil. The threads where the spark plug screw into the head were damaged, but repairable. I replaced the spark plug and coil. Even though there was no fire or injury in my particular case, the possibility for such is likely if this problem is systemic. When the spark plug blows out of the cylinder head, it can be done with a lot of force, which could cause injury/death, depending upon the proximity of people at the time. Also, when a spark plug comes out of the cylinder head, gas fumes released may become ignited by sparks from the coil or spark plug wires, resulting in a engine compartment fire. The old parts are available for inspection if necessary.

67 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1999 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 11/20/2009

Twice I have been stranded by the same problem. In July while driving on a major 4 lane highway towing my horse trailer, my 99 Ford f250 with the v10 engine blew a spark plug. It sounded like and exhaust leak and I kept driving later to find out that this situation often causes an engine fire. Again in November my truck did the same thing, same plug after the manufacturer recommended repair was done. This is not safe at all and a design defect of all triton Ford truck engines.

68 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2002 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 10/06/2009

I have 2002 Ford f250 with a 5. 4l triton engine. The exhaust manifold studs are rusting and breaking off. I have contacted my dealer and have been told it is common problem. This is an $850 to $1000 fix. I am afraid that the exhaust gases may start something burning in the engine compartment and that the leaking exhaust is not being cleaned by the catalytic converter. If this is a common problem, why isn't there a recall? the replacement studs are stainless steel and are bigger so Ford must know of this problem.

69 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2009 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 09/28/2009

70 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2002 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 08/22/2009

While driving my 2002 Ford f250 super duty (5. 4l v-8) I experienced a popping sound from under the hood which increased in volume very quickly. I pulled over (on a busy highway) and had to be towed to a shop where I learned that a spark plug had been ejected. The repair, which was about the most minimal that could be done, cost me over $600. 00, with no guarantee that this will not happen again. My internet research on this indicates that there have been literally thousands of these incidents involving Ford engines. Ford clearly knows about this, but does not acknowledge it, does not assist with the costs, and will not recall the engines. This is not just a very costly inconvenience - it is a clear-cut safety issue that strands vehicles on busy highways and has resulted in numerous fires.
