Five problems related to steering gear box have been reported for the 1999 Ford F-350. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The contact owns a 1999 Ford F-350 sd. The contact stated that when driving at least 30 mph and attempting a turn or switching lanes, the power steering system would not return the steering wheel back to center, causing the vehicle to drift outside the lanes. The contact called the dealer regarding the issue and the dealer advised that the failure was contributed to the steering box and recommended diagnostic testing. The contact located a recall regarding the failure (NHTSA campaign id number: 98v116000- steering: gear box other than rack and pinion) but was advised by the manufacturer that his VIN was not included in the recall campaign. The failure mileage was 161,000.
Vehicle was involved in a accident that did damage to the right front wheel area. The right front wheel hit a cement culvert causing damage to the hub and axle housing. During or before (unknown) the accident the steering box output (pitman) shaft broke. We have several of these types of trucks and one other f350 that while driving in a storm the wheel hit a rut in the road and the pitman shaft broke causing the truck to go up an embankment and roll over.
While driving vehicle severely pulls to right or left and extreme vibration occurs, causing loss of vehicle control. Replaced steering gear box. Consumer states all the ball joints and bushings in front end also had to be replaced. Rear brake pads were replaced.
Possible failure of recall component led to loss of control/accident, no deployment of both air bags during collision with front end damage. Severe injury to consumer due to failure. (98v-116) yh.
Steering wanders. Dealer added steering stablizer, but still wanders all over road.
