When shifting to a lower gear clutch assembly became stuck. Took to dealer, and they replaced clutch slave cylinder.
Emergency brake cable assembly broke, manual brake clutch assembly failed on 07/29/02. These components failed while consumer was utilizing components for towing. Consumer also states the glow plug sensor failed, the air condition sensor failed.
The clutch assembly [ powertrain component] failure is the direct result of excess heat build up from a stated "inherent component slippage" which results in a butterfly effect failure as described by meegan for service manager. . . Upon my inspection of the components it is evident that excessively high heat occurred as shown by the discoloration of the pressure plate assembly. . . The butterfly effect failure occurs when the heat causes distortion of the pressure plate resulting in the loss of applied pressure from the pressure plate directed to the driven plate and the fly wheel which in turn results in the loss of power transmission to the drive axles. . . . However after driving manual transmission vehicles for 38 years I find it hard to believe that a clutch assembly would have an amount of so called normal slippage so high that would create tempertures so extreme as to turm the metal in the pressure plate blue. . . The clutch failure occurred on p. A. I-80 toll road in a construction zone on a mountain downgrade at aspeed of 55 mph. . . These temputures could have caused a fire and the clutch assembly failure placed the motoring public, myself, my passenagers, the vehicle and the cargo I was hauling in danger. . In my opinion the clutch assemblies have a serious design flaw and should be investiagated ASAP. . . Thank you in advance for your consideration.

While driving arm in clutch assembly broke, causing clutch not to disengage. Consumer took vehicle to 4 different dealers who would not repair, consumer had repairs completed by his shop, was not compensated by Ford.
This is the second time that clutch went; 350/450, and 550 clutches were defective while driving down a hill, needed to downshift, and gear got locked. Could not downshift at all. Consumer had to put on brakes and kill the engine, also, a/c went out 4 times. The clutch came apart and the pieces fell into clutch plate destroying front shaft of the transmission.
The clutch locked up at highway speeds, causing it not to disengage. Dealer and manufacturer have been notified. The parts are on national back order.
While driving clutch will "go out" which could cause vehicle to stall and result in a crash. Common problem. Dealer cannot determine the cause of the problem. Please provide further information.
We also have another truck identical to description listed above and have also had a third clutch replaced also. The problem has been the same part breaking every single time. The spring in the clutch plate is breaking and is falling into the transmission causing the drivers great difficult in stopping.
While trying to down shift clutch came apart. This happened without warning. Vehicle was taken to the dealership. Clutch was replaced at owner's expense. Please provide any further information.
And also f550 1999, VIN# 1fdaf56f0xeb34205, defective throw bearing on the clutch assembly in a crash. First the problem occurred on 1999, f450; and dealer replaced that vehicle with a 1999 f550, but currently vehicle is having the same exact problem.
Defective clutch prevented shifting the gear. Yh.
