Failure Date: 06/16/2003

I own a 2000 Ford f550 modified by fontaine modification company, louisville, ky to tow a fifth wheel trailer, gvr 15,900 lbs. This was a demo vehicle for fontaine and had 2598 miles on the odometer. It was delivered to me as a new vehicle with a 3 year 36,000 miles warranty on 9-29-2002. Prior to purchasing this vehicle, the dealer, cunningham campers had two blow outs on the right rear dual 225/70r-19. 5/f general tires on 8-6-2002. Two more blow outs, (explosions) occurred in of June 2003, while the vehicle was parked. I replaced the general tires with michelin tires. This vehicle was delivered without high pressure valve stems which I replaced with the high pressure valve stems after the second blowout. The local Ford dealer refused to take any action on my complaint and blamed continental tire company (general) and continental blamed Ford for the problem saying that the zipper tears were caused by inferior valve stems. I have another tire that is very questionable and I am afraid to go on the highway towing a 5th wheel that weighs 15,900 with tires experienced 4 blow outs in the past year and a questionable 5th tire and 4 more original tires left on the vehicle which neither Ford nor continental will take responsibility for. I will be taking several long trips in the next year totaling over 5,000 miles--help .

11 Tire Valve problem of the 2001 Ford F-550

Failure Date: 03/25/2002

We received a recall notice to have our local dealer (towne Ford) check the valve stems in our 2001 F-550. On January 23, 2002, the check was performed and we were told no replacements were necessary. On March 25, 2002, one of our three man crews was traveling on the freeway at 60-65 mph and experienced what they described as a blowout of the right front tire. They were able to pull safely to the side and call a local tire service company to have the tire serviced. When the technician arrived, he went straight to the valve stem and said heres your problem, we see this all the time with these big Fords. When the crew arrived that evening to report the incident, I was on the phone right away to towne Ford, believing that the recall had possibly been insufficiently addressed and that at a minimum, we should expect reimbursement from Ford for the expense of the emergency service call. I was told to bring in the valve stem and original service invoice for reimbursement. Upon arriving at towne with our valve stem and service invoice in hand, we were told that there would be no reimbursement for this incident. After our objection, the service manager agreed to contact Ford motor company and get back to us. Two days later we received word that Ford motor company would provide 80% reimbursement and that they would need the valve stem and tire in question. I immediately called cumming henderson and was told that the tire had already been disposed of. At this point, and despite a call to townes customer service representative, ula, it became clear that towne was no longer interested in helping us. My call to the Ford motor company customer relationship center was no more satisfying. We feel that a known safety issue was responsible for potential danger to three of our men and expensive down time. Having used Ford motor company trucks in our business since 1970, and as current owners of eight Ford trucks, we are very disappointed at the lack of support in this issue.

Consumer was informed by the dealer that it was up to Ford's specifications. In September the inside rear tire went flat. Consumer was pulling a trailer and didnt realize there was a flat. The tire side walls were destroyed. Because of the damage, there was no way to determine the cause. In July of 2002, two of the inside rear tires went flat simultaneously. Consumer was pulling a trailer at the time and had been checking the tires every 70 miles. Upon taking the tires to the local dealer, it was determined that the cause of failure was the valve stems. Valve stem failures on four tires while in transit. Three of the tires I have as evidence plus valve stem and photographs of tires. Tire #1 12,000 miles, #2 13,000 miles, #3 14,500 miles. I went for valve stem recall about 14-17 months prior to all tire failures at sayville Ford. I have all documentation, bills for road service repairs, etc. They told me the "zipper failure" on the sidewall is due to "uninflated tires not the faulty valve stems that failed". The last blowout is still on the rim which I will change soon being it is the spare tire. One tire was thrown out (discarded) by error. I would like to be reimbursed for the three tires that I kept for evidence, new valve stems (different type) and road service.
