5 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/30/2010

My 2000 Ford Focus stalls whenever I come to a stop, it occurs everyday and at times my car has shut off right in the middle of traffic almost causing collisions. Nothing has been done to correct the failure, Ford has not contacted me in regards to the recall nor have they return any of my attempts to get the problem solved.

6 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2010

2000 Ford Focus. After pumping gas and then starting the engine. The car starts and then dies. The rpm. Goes just under 2 and then drops down to nothing and the engine stalls. I have taken it to my mechanic several time and he can't figure it out. So then I took it to a mechanic that deals just in engines, and he doesn't know what's going on with it. The problem is that it only does it after you pump fuel. It starts fine every other time. The only other difference is that I am noticing that I go through fuel faster now and I am getting less mileage.

7 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/06/2010

I noticed slight hesitation in my 2000 Ford Focus in June of 2009, and requested that my local Ford dealership consider replacing the fuel sender and pump because this was a known internal Ford campaign replacement part issue. They indicated because it was not a severe hesitation, they could not perform that work under the replacement campaign. This hesitation continued but very intermittently. Then in July 2010, I was driving with my wife and daughter in the above car, and attempted to get on interstate 95. The car began to have severe hesitation issues when I gassed it, and I was unable to get the car above ~ 35 mph as cars swerved past me honking because I could not achieve highway speeds. I drove in the breakdown lane with flashers on and got off at the next exit and returned home via local roads with the symptoms still showing (severe hesitation). I brought the car to my local Ford dealer. They diagnosed it as having the fuel sender and pump problem of the recall, but also indicated the cost was no longer covered by Ford because Ford had a ten year limit on replacement ! I would like to point out the dealership refused to change this faulty fuel assembly a year earlier (when it was still covered), yet now acknowledged the issue but required me to pay for repairing the problem, after having subjected my family to several near-accidents on the interstate due to this known severe safety issue. They indicated I could write to Ford hq concerning the issue. I had the work done by the dealership because it had to be done. The problem now no longer occurs. I wrote to Ford's customer relation center on Aug 17, 2010, describing the above situation. I received a letter dated sept. 1, 2010, indicating that Ford agreed with the dealership's decision, and would not cover the repairs because "limits must be placed on those efforts" to resolve such problems. I am angry they exposed my family to such danger yet refused to allow replacement prior to the issue and refuses to pay.

12 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/06/2007

Bought used 2000 Ford Focus for daughter on 6/19/07. Worked fine until about 3 weeks later (~7/6) when car would stall out on her for no reason while she was driving it. Taken to dealership we bought from who took it to local Ford store so they could look at it. They claim problem has not occurred with them. Talked to 800# for Ford and lady tells me that service dept has to "replicate" the problem before they will fix the known problem (fuel delivery module). Notification was suppose to be sent to owner. When I talked to previous owners, they said they never received any notifications of recalls, etc from Ford. When I spoke to Ford, she said owner information is not automatically updated with them. . . I had her update with my daughter's information. To date, 8/2/07, Ford refuses to fix a well-known problem with early Ford Focus.

The contact owns a 2000 Ford Focus. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled and the failure was worsening by the day. The vehicle would completely shut off or surge before shutting off. It would restart immediately 80% of the time and have to be jumpstarted the remaining 20%. The vehicle would stall even when the vehicle was initially started. The failure occurred at all speeds. The contact would only make turns when no other vehicles were around in fear that the failure would recur. The dealer stated that they would not repair the vehicle according to NHTSA campaign id number 03v482000 (fuel system, gasoline) and would charge $86 for a diagnostic. The manufacturer was not notified. The current mileage was approximately 101,000 and failure mileage was approximately 70,000.

15 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2007

There have been several problems regarding 2000 Ford Focus concerning gas mileage deterioration. All cars lost some form of mpg estimates over years of use, but the Focus had terrible deterioration. . I have spoken to many owners of 2000 Ford Focus' that have experienced the same problem. Estimated mpg had been from 15 to 22, with mine fluctuated from 10 to 20. No mechanical problems could be found through normal means. There was no explanation regarding the loss of good gas mileage, with the exception of a problem with the programming of the brain box. Also, this car suddenly developed cracks in the windshield - they weren't cracks that were formed from the outside surface or the inside surface. They actually formed in the glass, between the layers. They cannot be felt on the outside or the inside of the glass.

16 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2007

- the contact owns a 2000 Ford Focus. The contact called Ford manufacturer on 02/05/07, and they told her that the safety recall 03v482000 applied to the vehicle . The contact had the vehicle towed to the dealer, and was told that they were not doing recall repairs anymore. On certain passenger vehicles, contamination of the filter in the fuel delivery module (fdm) can reduce, and eventually block the flow of fuel to the engine. The contact was told that there was no recall even when she gave the dealer the recall number. The contact stated that this vehicle had the same failure as mentioned in the recall. On 2/5/07 the vehicle would not start. When merging onto the highway at 25 mph the vehicle lost power, sputtered and stalled. Someone almost hit the contact's vehicle several times because it stalled. She pulled over to the side of the road and turned off the ignition and restarted the vehicle. This has been going on since 2004 intermittently, and usually happened when she attempted to merge into traffic. Also, the this happened several times a week, and each time she has had to pull off the road and restart the engine.

17 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2006

Went to vets, when leaving my Ford Focus started acting up. Seemed like gas was not getting to engine, then it quit. Left vets to come home, drove about 5 blocks and car did the same thing. A Honda dealer was close by so we left car there and rented a car to get home. Phoned Ford and they said they would do nothing for me. Husband went back to penticton to get my car and it did the same thing on the way home, quit coming home 3 times. The Honda dealer said if it did it again it was something to do with the fuel system pump, and we would have to replace it. When I talked to Ford they said they would not cover the replacement.

18 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/19/2006

I purchased my 2000 Ford Focus in 2001 and feel as if I have spent more time in the shop for recalls and repairs than I have driving it. In March 2003, I was driving 65 mph on the highway when the car died without warning. I was barely able to make it safely to the shoulder and required a tow to the dealership. They fixed the problem which was apparently related to the recall for the fuel delivery module. The car ran fine until recently when it again began to hesitate, surge, and stall (especially if the air conditioner is on, which I now cannot run and I live in tennessee where the temperatures are regularly in the 80's and 90's). I took the car to the Ford dealership yesterday and told them I am having the same problem I had before when the recall was apparently fixed. They said to come back the next day and they would look at it but it would not be covered under the recall or warranty because it was already fixed once and it's only guaranteed for 12 months. This car is a lemon if there ever was one. I will never again purchase an american-made car if they are able to get away with ripping off consumers the way they do.

28 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2003

We purchased this 2000 Ford Focus on 11/13/00. We began having problems with the manual transmission for the first time in January 2001 and took it to the dealership on 1/25/01 for diagnosis and repair. The vehicle has been in for repairs 4 additional times for manual transmission problems on 8/01/01, 1/11/02,7/09/02, and 2/13/03. The problems have been difficulty shifting into 1st and 2nd gear, grinding when shifting into 3rd gear. One of the times it was taken in we had completely lost the ability to shift into 2nd or 4th gear. Each time they have fixed the problem only to have more problems occur. The vehicle was taken to the dealership on 1/30/03 for road noise and wobbling in the wheel. The tire almost fell off on the way to the dealership. At that time we were advised that there was a recall on the wheel bearings. We had never received notification of this and in fact the service manager said that he was unaware of the recall until he looked up our vehicle in the computer. They subsequently performed the following repairs: found related damage because of recall as follows, left drum, spindle and bearings refaced right drum r & r right spindle. Rear shoes replaced parts for related damage. This is the information stated on the invoice. At this time the check engine light had also been on so we asked them to also find out what that problem was. They found gross leak found at evap manifold line. Replaced line. This vehicle has also been to the dealership for several recalls including the replacement of a battery cable on 1/30/03 and another unspecified recall on 10/02/01. This vehicle has been in the shop 6 times for a total of 67 days in the 27 months that we have owned it. It now has 35,800 miles and the warranty is about to expire. We have made several calls to the dealership and to Ford customer service. They have offered to extend the warranty on the drive train and charge us a $50 deductible each time that the vehicle requires service on this system.
