The electronic power steering assist feature failed when I was 100 miles from home. It occurred after the car was parked for about 2 hours. Prior to this it was working ok. This has happened one time before. When it happened before I disconnected the battery and cleaned the terminal. I charged the battery and the problem went away for about a month. Today I took the car to a service center and had the battery replaced. The problem did not go away this time. I had to drive the car back on the freeway without power steering assist.

Vehicle is a 2013 Ford Focus ev with approx. 60k miles. Based on reports read on NHTSA website and other notable resources Ford has had issues with electric power steering in several models. Though this specific model and year are not identified in a recall, the electric steering failure and accompanying codes fit the bill with issues covered in a recall. When this issue occurred the vehicle was in motion on downtown city streets, traveling at an approx. Speed of 25 to 30 mph when the electric steering failed. This event caused the vehicle to veer off to one direction and strike a curb while at the same time I depressed the brakes to stop or slow the vehicle in an attempt to regain control. Many people are aware of the transmission control module problem with the 2013 Ford Focus that has been recalled. However, I have had another problem with my Ford Focus that I researched and found that many more people are having the same or similar problem with their fuel tank collapsing and needing to replace most of the components in the entire fuel system. I had the purge valve replaced as an out of pocket expense as my extended warranty has expired, hoping this would fix the problem. I was informed by the mechanic that to fix my car completely, it would most likely need a new fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel line and of course the purge valve ( which I had replaced ). My car is only 5 years old and I do not know how or why I need to replace the entire fuel system. I have seen many posts describing the same situation on carcomplaints. Com and know of someone locally who I know personally who has the exact same problem with their 2013 Ford Focus. When driving, my engine will shut off completely. From time to time, my oil light will come on as my engine stalls out and tries to 'die' and I can press the gas to 'revive' the engine and keep it from shutting off. This repair of the fuel system was estimated to cost $2,000 to repair and I just don't have it. I listed my car online for $5,400 as is and have no one interested in it at that price after I've invested nearly $20,000 in this car in the 4 years I've been making payments, maintenance and repairs on it. I've also had the power steering replaced on this vehicle when I had around 80,000 miles on it. The power steering failed while in motion and almost caused an accident. This particular vehicle is a dangerous one. Buyer beware.
Power steering rack began to fail, took into shop and as they removed it to replace it it fell apart. I was advised by the shop that should this had failed on the freeway I could have died due to having zero steering ability.

Power steering assist failure indicated on instrument panel and full loss of any steering assist. Steering requires/required lots of muscle to maintain any form of active driver intended steering changes. Resulted in no injury, but very frightening occurrence at highway speeds. Will take vehicle to dealer in the morning, vehicle mileage is 90k. A quick internet search shows this is a common problem for 2013 Ford Focus, so why no recall?.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Focus. While driving 25 mph to the dealer for an oil change, the power steering failed and went into manual mode. The power steering failure warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer (causeway Ford Lincoln, 375 NJ-72, manahawkin, NJ, 08050) where it was diagnosed that the power steering rack failed and needed to be replaced. Due to the cost, the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: cas-13195872. The manufacturer informed the contact that the part was not covered under warranty and that they would cover half of the cost. No additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 54,000.
Power steering failed while driving on the highway. Very difficult to steer vehicle. Took to dealership and they reported failed epas. Appears to be a common problem with Ford vehicles and has been recalled on certain models, but not the Ford Focus.
Power steering assist failure - the steering wheel became stiff making the car very difficult to steer. This is a known problem across many different Ford models, and they have recalled certain models due to this issue, however they have not issued a recall for 2013 Ford Focus. A quick internet search shows this is a common problem for 2013 Ford Focus, so why no recall?.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Focus. While driving approximately 60 mph, the power steering failed and the vehicle became difficult to steer. I purchased a Ford Focus in 2013 and currently have 28,300 miles on this vehicle. This car has been well maintained and is driven solely by me. However, recently I had a major mechanical problem that could very easily be fatal for any driver. The power steering completely failed and locked up the steering while I was driving. Luckily for me I was within 10 feet of my driveway going about three miles per hour. I had to have the car towed to the Ford dealer where they wanted over two thousand dollars to repair the power steering. If anyone is driving this car on the highway and this problem occurs, I believe the probability of a serious accident or fatality would be very high. I was told by the Ford dealership that the power steering is electronic so when it goes, it becomes unsteerable. Alarmingly, when speaking with dealership and the Ford area regional manager they did not regard this as a serious problem. In fact, they did not believe this was a defect as it was not covered under warrantee. I asked if this was not defective, how could this occur at 28,300 miles? the dealership told me this could happen if it was hit but admitted there was no evidence of this. I can assure you that this car has not even run over a pot hole. Since no one is taking this seriously, I need to document this problem as one that can cause a serious accident if not recalled or corrected by Ford motor company. This is a much more severe problem than the auto problem a few years back where cars were accidentally running people over when starting . This is a very serious problem that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. Imagine your family driving on a highway at sixty miles an hour and this problem happens, I believe more people should be aware of this possibility before they purchase this vehicle. I for one would have never purchased mine!.
Transmission began shifting incorrectly until finally losing all power leaving me stranded in the passing lane going uphill on a major highway. Problem still persisted after the Ford dealer reprogrammed the transmission. Replacement of transmission control module still has not fixed the issue and the dealer currently doesn't know what the problem is as they hold onto the car for further testing. I've also had the power steering fail on me twice.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Focus. While driving 65 mph, the power steering failed and the power steering assist warning indicator illuminated. The dealer diagnosed that the steering gear failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 128,000.
I'm another victim of the epas power steering gear assembly failing. It failed on September 26th, while under warranty, but unfortunately I didn't bring it into a dealership on September 30th. Two days after the warranty expiration. Despite the well-known occurrences of the epas / gear assembly failures, the warranty expiration date, etc. , Ford still chose to refuse it under warranty care. Instead, Ford forced me to pay out of pocket with no assistance. The worse part is it nearly caused an accident because it chose to fail in traffic while under operation at low speeds.
On the evening of sept. 8, 2016 while driving straight on lee jackson memorial highway in fairfax, va at about 45 miles per hour, power steering failed with no warning. Power assist cut out and a warning indicator came on. This resulted in an immediate challenge to maintain control of the vehicle. I was fortunate an accident did not occur given the immediate, dramatic increase in physical effort required to steer. I was able to safely return home that evening with difficulty, and I brought the car to ted britt Ford the following morning. I was told that a control module had failed, but since it was integral to the steering "gear" the entire steering system needs to be replaced at a cost of $1,600. I understand that there is a recall on recent Fords with steering problems, but my model, year, and issue are not covered. This is clearly a widespread safety issue. Had a smaller adult or a child been driving, this event could have had a very bad end.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Focus. After starting the vehicle, the power steering seized and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. Power steering failed suddenly while driving on a straight section of city street - with no warning. The entire steering assembly needed to be replaced to replace a failed sensor module!!!!.
Backing out of a parking space and the power steering failed. Wheel could not be turned at all. Vehicle had to be towed to a dealer since an independent repair shop could not repair. Total cost of the repair was $1793. 43. The vehicle only had 49k miles at the time of the failure.
While driving on a main road my steering wheel suddenly became very tight and felt as if it locked up. I was unable to turn the wheel and then the light went on saying power steering failure. The car because extreamly difficult to control and no longer safe to drive. When I would try to turn the wheel I would hear almost like a grinding sound and the wheel would feel like it was almost pushing back against me turning it. The vehicle is no longer safe to drive and was purchased brand new and has never had any issues until this.

I filled up my car with gas and then turned it back on to get a failure message that my eps power steering had failed. When I tried to turn the vehicle, it was very hard to turn corners or turn it at all. I tried driving it to the dealership and once there, I was notified that I would need to pay $1,500. 00 to pay for an entire new eps system since they cannot replace just the steering module. I don't get how I pay for a like-new car in 2014 and immediately incur a 1,500. 00 bill.

In addition, the brakes and power steering failed. The vehicle was towed to the rental company. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The VIN was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.
Approximately 15 minutes into trip to work from home the power assist steering on my 2013 Ford Focus failed at which point the vehicle became significantly difficult to steer. Luckly I was on a straight path, had this happened in a turn, an accident would have certainly occured. At the point where the power assist steering failed a message appeared on the dashboards led display that read something to the effect that lose of power assited steering detected. After the message disappeared, the vehicle's (!) light remained lite. Vehicle was towed to dealership who after looking at it stated that the technician started the vehicle and it ran perfectly. No isses with the steering at all, but that there were some "codes" looged in the vehicle's system that they were unfamiliar with and were trying to reach the "Ford hotline" for further help.
