The power steering went out in my car earlier in the day on 9/17/19 when I was making some of my rounds for work. I made a stop at a business, and was only inside for a couple of minutes. I got back in my car, started it and the steering wheel was very hard to move. I backed out and went to a store about 2 miles down the road. Checked some things, but didn't see anything wrong. Started my car and it worked. Later the same evening my boyfriend and I dropped off our kids to go to town real quick. We were only gone from them for about 45 minutes when we went to head back to get them and the steering wasn't working again. There was no noise, no sign, no light, nothing. It just quit. We checked the fuse and it looked fine. It doesn't throw out any kind of code. It shows that it has power. We did make it home, being very cautious. It's not working today, so that means I can't do my job. However, when we started searching the internet we both see all kinds of complaints stating the same problems. Why has nothing been done to address this issue? there were recalls for the same problem on other vehicles, but not the Focus. Obviously there is a problem that Ford needs to fix.
Power steering assist failure, the steering wheel is incredibly hard to turn when the vehicle is stationary.
When I started my car the steering wheel was hard to turn. I got a warning on the dash that said steering assist fault. This is crazy! the car only has 63000 miles on it. Please have Ford include these Focus cars in the safety recall also. This failure while driving could kill people.
Takata recall- I'm having a problem with my steering. One afternoon I started to car and noticed that my steering wheel was stuck. After a while I turned the car off and let it sit then started it again and the problem was gone. The next day I attempted to drive the car and couldn't because the steering wheel was hard to turn. The Ford dealership is telling me to pay an excessive amount of money for the issue. I just want to know what do I need to do from here.
My teenage son was operating the vehicle at relatively low speed (below 20mph) in stop and go traffic in a busy city shopping area, the steering suddenly locked and was very difficult to maneuver left or right. He was able to pull the car off the road into a parking lot with tremendous effort. When trying to turn the wheel left or right the car seemed to lock or grab at the wheel and made an awful screeching sound. He said that several warnings flashed on the message center but he did not catch them as he was trying to get out of traffic safely. Once he came to a stop, he noticed that the orange "I" in a box remained lit while the car was running. I went to pick him up and verified the locked steering, noise, and warning light. We left the car overnight and researched potential problems before having it towed to a mechanic. I came across several forums and complaints that sounded very similar to my car's issues. Many of these cars had worked after turning off the vehicle and restarting. So the next day I went and started the car with no issues and had no warning lights or indicators. However, as I pulled out the steering was still very tight and jerky but I was able to man-handle the car enough to make it to a local dealer. No warning lights ever came on this time. I was informed that I must replace the power steering control module and have it reprogrammed to determine if this is the only problem at a cost of approximately $450. I have authorized this repair. The dealer said that after this repair, I may also need to replace the steering gear and have the car aligned at an additional cost of approximately $1500. My car is at 89,700 miles.
While driving at a high rate of speed(55mph) on a highway, the "power steering assist failure" came up on the dash screen. I immediately noticed the steering was tight to turn. While turning to get off to the side of the road, the tightness got worse. It took a lot of strength to turn the wheel. I almost got in an accident. When the Ford dealership diagnosed the problem, they said the steering assist was shot and would cost around $1600 to replace and realign the wheels. They informed me the problem was not a recall issue although I see Ford has recalls on various other model power steering assist units. They need to add the Focus to the list.
I was driving on the interstate, and had noticed my steering wheel was kind of tight, and making little adjustments didn't feel normal. I was traveling at 70 mph, and the car couldn't make a small curve, I had to swerve into the next lane, almost hit the concrete wall. My warning light came on steering assist fault service immediately . I pulled off the interstate as I did there was a horrible gridding sound at any little turn of the wheel. The steering became completely useless, the car was drifting into oncoming traffic and wouldn't turn at all. I parked the car and turned it off, when I turned it backed on the error has changed to complete system failure, and the steering wheel will not move at all.
I owned my brand new car for approximately 7 days, when the problems began! it had 4 miles on it when I purchased it new! I was driving on a local highway at approximatly 45-55 mph, when the steering started to feel sticky, I felt like I was losing control of the vehicle, it felt as though I was in a major wind storm and was being blown back and forth across the highway! I was scared to death! I pulled the car to the side of the road and had my husband come drive us the rest of the way home. Also, when turning to a hard right or left, I can feel something under my feet like theres something about to rocket through the floor boards! also, when I'm stopped anywhere with the engine running and the transmission engaged, and I'm holding the brake of course, the car wants to lunge forward and it does it too, when I'm pulling into or backing out of a parking space. Its dangerous and very scarey!! please Ford, please look into these issues before someone dies or is seriously injured.
