The airbag light on the instrument cluster of my 2007 Ford Focus came on for the first time August 31, 2011. The car has 37,023 miles and has had all the dealer maintenance performed since the car was purchased. I was told by the longmont Ford dealer that the on board diagnostic computer indicated a loss of communication and that the airbag safety system was not engaged when the light was on. I returned to the dealer the next day to have a complete diagnostic to determine what had caused the light to activate. I was told that the instrument cluster had failed and that the entire cluster must be replaced. This electronic failure represents a serious safety issue if not replaced at a cost of ~$800. 00. I am deeply concerned that other drivers of this car may not understand that the safety system is completely inactive when the instrument cluster fails in this way. Ford does not offer to replace this as part of the safety warranty program. I think this is wrong and represents a safety hazard for drivers who may not understand the failure or who cannot afford to make such a repair and choose to drive the care without the safety feature operable.

The contact owns a 2001 Ford Focus. While driving approximately 70 mph, the contact noticed the entire instrument panel and other gauges failed to function properly. The speedometer and fuel gauge also would not display an accurate reading. Immediately the vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road and the engine was turned off. Upon restarting the vehicle it began to function for a brief period and the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the instrument panel cluster was replaced. The similar failure recurred six months after the repair was performed. The contact stated the instrument panel cluster would need to be replaced for the second time. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the malfunction. The approximate failure mileage was 89,000. Updated 03/14/lj

2002 Ford Focus se 4 cylinder shutting down while driving. Dash board goes out and then the engine shuts down. Battery was replaced and it is still doing it. Sometimes it starts back up if I let it sit for awhile, but sometimes I have to get it jumped. Very unsafe and scary when it shuts down while driving on the road.

Owner of a Ford Focus/2003. Ignition switch locked up and had to get my car towed ($45. 00) as well as pay for repairs ($183. 00). Called Ford headquarters and talked with a representative about being reimbursed. I also mentioned the problem I was having with my gauges. Upon starting car, gauges are all out of wack, swinging back and forth and landing on zero. After being on the road for about 15 or 20 minutes they will positioned at the right place. The representative seem to only care to hear about one of the problem (ignition switch) and not the other one. I was put on hold for a while and when rep return she told me to call company that was repairing my Focus and they will help me in this matter. I called the company and the guy that eagerly took my money stated that he will do a claim for me and he stated that I will get some of my money but not all of it back. In checking the recalls I see ignition switch lockup is one of them. I only have had my car for a little over a year. My windshield is cracked and insurance says I must pay $250 before they fix it, when turning on air conditioner, driving seem difficult (hard to pull), liftgate water leaks, and upon purchasing my car, brakes were squeaking; I mentioned this to the dealer and he told me not to worry about it that the brakes were new and had to be broken in. Well they are still squeaking after a year in a half. I need all of these things fixed on my car, right now I am a month behind in car payments (good record on making my payments), had to use the money to get the ignition switch repaired.
