2 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 10/08/2017

Vehicle purchased in 2015 with less than 20k miles. 1st problem, exploded tire causing minor body damage and sensor damage. Thankfully just came from a stop sign and not traveling fast, no injury. 2nd problem, driving down road at approx 35mph when airbags suddenly deployed. Wondered if hit small animal. Got out to investigate. . . . . Nothing. Vehicle then rolled off road (decline in terrain) landing rested in a chain link fence. Upon inspection, discovered that motor mounts had failed causing motor to drop forwards towards radiator therefore indicating crash and deploying airbags. All components connected to motor ripped forwards as well. Thankfully also no injury. If that would have occurred at high speeds, serious injury or death could have resulted. There is no reason or excuse for failure of motor mounts. This is clearly a defect. Contacted Ford at the highest level number I was able to obtain. Requested only to address safety issue. They issued a claim, dismissed it and would not allow me to speak to anyone with the authority to address the issue. Contacted chevy dealership where vehicle was purchased, they said Ford would have to address the issue. Then took vehicle to Ford dealership to run diagnostic to evaluate why airbags deployed. This vehicle contains a module that contains data pertaining to airbag deployment. It is as simple as retrieving the data! only Ford field rep can do this. Towed vehicle to dealership to perform diagnostic to next be referred to rep for data retrieval. Employees of dealership were not allowed by their supervisor to examine the vehicle due to the extent of damage under the hood. Someone needs to be concerned with the integrity of the motor mounts on this vehicle. Other vehicles may have this problem as well. If mounts were to fail at high speeds, catastrophic crash would be eminent. Damage from crash would hide failed mounts as cause.

6 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 08/26/2013

Auto accident on 8/26/2013 in fredericksburg, va, corner of hwy 1 and hwy 208 at 9:15 am. Driving between 5-7 mph due to stop at red light to make right turn. Driver in front started through the red light and stopped. I hit her car but no car body dents on either car. My 2000 Ford Focus upon impact deployed (2) air bags, even though I was the only person in the car and no weight on passenger seat. The air bags caused all the car damage and second degree burn on my right hand. The passenger air bag lid smashed the car windshield. The car was drivable but unsafe to drive away from accident. I towed it to local Ford dealer (purvis) on hwy 1 for diagnostics test to check the sensors. The dealer report said that the car operated as designed and both air bags should deploy and cause all that damage (car/body) estimated $4914. 00 at low speeds. The repair cost is more than the value of the car.

8 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2005 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 05/04/2009

I own a 2005 Focus zx4 whom has been serviced several times for engine mounts, alternator, headlights/tail lights, stereo, and now passenger front seat airbag sensor. I was told back in 2009 that the passenger front seat airbag sensor was not covered by the extended warranty but the stereo was!!! so everytime I have an adult in the passenger front seat the airbag sensor in the seat malfunctions; a safety feature to keep your family safe is not covered and now I see another car manufacturer recalling the same thing but Ford is not willing to fix. I called Ford headquarters and no help or care to do so. . . This will be my last Ford I purchase after years of growing up with Fords. You would think they would care about their consumers.

9 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2007 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 10/26/2007

On October 25 2007 I purchased a Ford Focus sedan 4 door car with more or less 400 miles on the odometer. A couple of days later I noticed that when my daughter which is 5 foot one, 112 lb was riding in the passenger's seat, an indicator light lit indicating me that the airbag is turned off ( written on the plastic), telling me that at this moment the airbag would not deploy in case of a collision. This feature is supposed to activate when children are seated in the passenger seat in order to avoid deployment injury. I went to my dealer 4 times expressing my complaints around this safety issue. Each time they told me that the unit would be reset and ultimately they even exchanged a seat cushion, all of this with no avail. Confronted again with this problem with my wife as a passenger (5ft 3 and 114lb) I returned to the dealer and they reproduced the situation I was explaining with a local thin passenger. As a result of this visit I contacted Ford customer service and filed a complaint on 11/19/2007. Ford advised that I would receive a follow up call in a couple of days. Today 11/20/2007 Ford called and told me that according to their engineers, the behavior of the light was "as designed" and as such I could do nothing about it. Let me state that Fords explanation is ridiculous and a severe breach in auto security with liability issues. Bottom line, occupants in the front passenger seat ( in this case my daughter or wife) could be subjected to lethal injuries as a result on non deployment of the air bag due to a faulty mechanism which interprets erroneously that small adults are children even in the case of normal small adults. I find this situation completely unacceptable and awareness, if not a class suit should be initiated against Ford. As a customer, I'm frustrated and feel at risk using this new vehicle.

13 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 12/31/2005

My fiance, parents and I were driving home from dinner and got caught in a snow storm. Knowing how bad the roads near me can get I slowed down to 15 mph when I saw the roads were getting covered. We came around a corner and caught a patch of ice and the car slid into a curb. Upon impact of the curb, both airbags deployed and the windshield was smashed (from the airbag. When we exited the vehicle we expected to see major damage to the car. We went to the passenger side of the car to find that the front right tire was pushed back 3-6 inches and the front right fender was slightly bent. All damage was from the tire. I never expected that much damage from a 15 mph collision with a curb. There was no damage to the front bumper where the airbag crash sensors are located. Cost to fix tire and fender = $1,200. Cost to fix airbags/windshield/dash damage from airbags = $4,000. With little damage to the vehicle, the airbags deployed and the vehicle was totaled.

Failure Date: 08/22/2003

I was sitting at a red light. When the light turned green, the driver in front of me moved and I moved behind him I must have slightly tapped his bumper. I am saying must have because the other driver kept on going as nothing had happened. Both air bags deployed and the passenger bag cracked the windshield. The driver's air bag gave me 2nd and 3rd degrees burns on my left arm. I called Ford trying to get them to fix it for free because I feel that the switch that enables the air bags is defective and because the car only has 40,000 miles and their warranty is 36,000. Failure Date: 10/07/2002

I bought a 2002 Ford Focus for my 18 year old daughter, and last year the car wrecked into a wall on i75. None of the airbags opened, even though it was a head on collision. I was the opinion of the body shop that every sensor that there was to hit for the air bags was hit. I tried to contact Ford and they kept telling me how much they cared but would not return my call. I hired a lawyer, who said that Ford would tell him to talk to the dealership that we bought the car from, which was kerry Ford in tri county, and they would tell him that its Ford corporation that should deal with it. My daughters lawyer resigned from the case because he wanted us to put out the money for a professional to evaluate the car. Right now my insurance company is hold the car but wants me to let them release it from storage. I bought the car with my daughters safety in mind and feel let down, and lied to and pushed around by corporate Ford. If theres any way you could help it would be much appreciated. Thank you. Rick kaiser.
