While driving, the vehicle began to accelerate on it's own. When brakes were applied the rpms sky rocketed. Turns out it was a broken cruise control module cable that would cause the throttle to get "stuck". At the same time it was also bogging out and shutting itself off while driving. The check engine light remained on throwing a p071? code which is associated with O2 levels. This turned out to be a broken "breather hose" which is connected to the air intake. Both parts have proven to be extremely difficult to track down. After replacing the "breather hose", ccm throttle cable, and also an O2 sensor the overall cost for parts was $300 and labor was $300. Thankfully no injuries.

When I purchased my car used February 2017 at 70,000 miles, I was given a carfax stating the only issue was with the transmission clutch. Less than a month in, I seemed to be losing power so I took it to town & country Ford in madison, TN. It was repaired under the aforementioned recall issue and I drove in relative satisfaction for almost an entire year. Then I took it into two rivers Ford (mt. Juliet) for the same issue. The service guy was very amicable and even arranged for me to have a loaner car while they had mine. The same issue was diagnosed, but with an additional fix. I paid $125 for some part not covered by the recall warranty because I was told that if it were to malfunction again, it may not be covered. The third time I took it in (back to mt juliet) they looked at it, determined it was the same issue, and said I'd have to pay out of pocket because the recall warranty was only good for 100,000 miles. I couldn't afford $2300 quite to fix it so I returned the loaner and claimed my vehicle, but not without making it abundantly clear that wasn't satisfied with how the situation was handled.

When trying to accelerate, the vehicle will make a sort of stuttering, or have a delay in acceleration. Sometimes I notice the rpms increasing without reason, almost as if it skips shifting maybe or has a delayed shift? I have not tried in "sport" mode to see if manually shifting solves the problem. I also have not been able to identify any other common things, such as a certain fuel level, internal or external temperature, or rate of intended acceleration, though I would not rule out anything. I have noticed this happening both in town driving and highway driving, the delay in acceleration or stuttering. There is also a distinct shudder that happens occasionally. I am not sure if it is an issue with fuel (flooding maybe? or a delay in fuel injection?) or an issue with the power train (any issue in the transmission with shifting?) or maybe an issue in speed control (a missed connection between the accelerator pedal or throttle control cables and the next step in the chain?). I just know that sometimes I need to accelerate to get in a spot in a line of traffic and when the car doesn't 'go' when I need it to and it shudders or has a stutter or delay, it causes the car I was getting in front of to have to brake and if they don't, then my children in the back seat are put at risk. This has happened multiple times, not just the date indicated.

I am writing this for two incidents happened within a two week time frame. 1. The engine had to be replaced since one piston pin had broken due to which the whole piston had broken inside the engine. The whole engine had to be replaced as per mechanics suggestion. I have the invoice from the mechanic shop and the mechanic would gladly provide more details if needed. 2. This was scary ! while driving at 70 miles an hour on cruise,the car would not come out of cruise control and constantly accelerated even after trying to use brakes. (ideally when you first touch the brakes, the car should come out of cruise) once the car reached at a speed of 80 miles and I could not do anything. When the car was shut down abnormally, and restarted the issue continued and even when it was in neutral, it constantly raved up. I see other people have recently filed complains for this and expect the NHTSA to do something about it urgently as in my opinion it is a huge safety issue. The mechanic mentioned that the cruise control cable was stuck in the housing. Currently the cruise control has been disconnected by my mechanic and I have bought a new cruise control cable from the dealer and hope to get it fixed soon, however expect the company to take care of both of the above issues.

While driving the vehicle the electric dash cluster quit working and the vehicle cut off in the middle of traffic. The alternator was replaced then the vehicle did the same thing a few months later. The battery cables were replaced and the battery and the alternator were replaced as a precaution. The vehicle after 4 days and no driving longer that 35 miles a day the same thing happened again while traveling down the interstate.

Tl-the contact owns a 2000 Ford Focus. The contact stated that while driving 65 mph with the cruise control activated, the vehicle independently increased acceleration to 90 mph. The vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road. The brake pedal was engaged when shifting into both neutral and park, which caused the vehicle to come to a stop. The vehicle driven cautiously to the dealer, who stated that the throttle body was stuck in an open position. In addition, the speed control cable was frayed. The vehicle was repaired. There were two recalls associated with the failure under NHTSA campaign id numbers: 00v302000 (vehicle speed control) and 99v346000 (vehicle speed control). The contact's VIN was not included in either recall campaign. The approximate failure mileage was 170,000. Kmj.
Vehicle gas peddle stick wide open about 6000 rpm cold out side with snow, 10 degrees f. Young girl 2 years of driving experience drove out of control until told to shut engine off and put in neutral. Dropped off at certified mechanic he cleaned carburetor tried to look at control cable things checked out fine. No warning codes came up. Drove he next day after picking up 10 degrees f, same issue sticking accelerator. I look again at in take cleaned it out again, issue happened again but not as bad. Very dangerous for a young girl with 2 years driving experience.
When slowing down (coasting or breaking) the accelerator hangs. It will hold at a constant rpm (between 2500 and 4000, different each time) I have to put the car in neutral and depress the throttle all the way several times. I checked the throttle cable and there is still tension on it so it is not mechanical between the pedal and the throttle body. Almost seems like a neutral sensor.
I noticed the gas pedal of my car (Ford Focus 2005) was hard to press when the weather is freezing cold. At times, I forced it through. A couple of times, we lubricate the cable and it worked fine. Yesterday, I speeded up to pass the car which was too slow in front of me. Then, my car accelerated itself and I could hardly stop. I almost wrecked into a car in front of me at a stop light. I managed to stop the car but the break was battling with the engine. When I let go of the break, the car accelerated itself. So, I had to use my break a lot to reach a local mechanics. He lubricated the cable and told me that the cable would need to be replaced. I went to Ford dealership today and they told me the same that the cable had to been replaced. It would cost me around $300. 00 including labor. Later, the mechanic at Ford showed me the cable. Part of the cable was concealed inside a plastic tube and this part was all messed up and keep breaking off. Because of the increase in the diameter of the cable after I pressed on the gas pedal, the cable would not go back once it was out. Therefore, my car kept accelerating yesterday. I agreed with Ford to fix it at my cost but I am anxious about the car quality as well other people's safety. I could have a terrible accident if I was not calm enough.

The contact owns a 2000 Ford Focus. While driving 55 mph with the cruise control engaged the vehicle began to accelerate beyond the set speed, up to 80 mph. The contact tried to disengage the cruise control by stepping on the brake pedal and turning the cruise control off but the vehicle continued to accelerate. The contact was able to drive onto the emergency lane and turn the ignition off. The contact opened the hood, pulled the throttle cable back and forth to disengage the cruise control. The contact called the manufacturer regarding the sudden acceleration and the manufacturer informed the contact that there was nothing they could do. The contact noticed that there were two recalls regarding the vehicle speed control and the throttle wire but the VIN was not related to the recall. The contact stated the failure could have caused a crash. The failure mileage was 103,000.
The contact owns a 2000 Ford Focus. The contact stated that when driving on the highway approximately 55 mph with the cruise control engaged, the vehicle suddenly began to accelerated. She tried to turn the cruise control off; however, the vehicle continued to accelerate to almost 90 mph. She was forced to shut the engine off to stop the vehicle. The contact owns a 2006 Ford Focus. During application the accelerator becomes stuck. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. She was advised that they may have to make an adjustment, and that the throttle cable was shredding . She repaired the vehicle at an expense of $300. 00 dollars. I have a 2000 Ford Focus that the cruise control cable started sticking wide open. After inspection I found the cable had wires in the cable housing broke and was causing the throttle to stick open. The cruise control would open the throttle while accelerating and would not release. I now have the cable disconnected from the cruise control Ford wants over $100 to fix the problem. It is a fault to the cable and should be recalled. Why want they issue a recall on this car. I could of been killed from the sticking throttle cable.
The contact owns a 2000 Ford Focus. On November 16, 2007, while driving 30 mph, the vehicle accelerated to 60 mph. The abs engaged and the vehicle accelerated to 12,000 rpm's. The contact drove into a curb in order to stop the vehicle. He shut off the engine and the vehicle was towed to the dealer. The dealer replaced the vehicle speed control cable. The manufacturer stated that there were no recalls; however, NHTSA campaign id number 00v302000 (vehicle speed control:cables) was related to the failure. The failure mileage was 70,924 and current mileage was 71,200.
Bought the car brand new in may 2006. On 01/23/07 driving on a surface street I realized the gas pedal seemed to have broken and I could not accelerate. I could only coast and was able to pull into a shopping center. Had the car towed to dealership where bought and was told the speed control cable had broken. On 10/26/11 it happened again, only this time I was on a 65mph freeway in rush hour. (5-lane freeway in each direction - major highway. ) (mileage 65040. ) I was able to coast to the shoulder and get off at the next exit. Had it towed again to Ford dealership and confirmed it was the same cable that had broken. I had the dealership save it and you can see how the cable was completely frayed. Luckily the cable has not become stuck while accelerating like some other reports I have read on the 06 Focus, but I think still this is a major safety concern.

2) pushing hard on the pedal, it eventually releases, sometimes squealing the tires and launches the vehicle forward which has almost made me hit people or unable to get out of the way of traffic where others have almost hit me. 3) dealer cleaned throttle cable but also said they would replace throttle body if it happens again.

Same problem as odi #10182755. When attempting to stop as for a traffic light or parking, the car would suddenly kick into high revs, (over 5000 rpm, and attempt to accelerate, but would stop if brakes applied very strongly. First incident happened less than 24 hours after purchasing the car in April 2006. Several more incidents over the next month, including two times where the car had to be towed back to the dealership for repair. Dealer replaced throttle body assembly and a cruise control cable; neither repair fixed the problem. Final attempt at repair dealer drove the car over 600 miles in 5 days and reported no problem found. Problem disappeared until March 2007 when it occurred again.
The vehicle has a recall for the speed control cable and servo unit (99v346000). The dealer and Ford motor CO. Service state that the recall doesn't apply to my vehicle even though I have the problem described in the recall which is a faulty servo unit.
No event led to this failure. I was driving on the freeway when my accelerator cable broke. Luckily, I was in a lane that allowed me to coast to the shoulder; however, a defect such as this is a safety concern. This could have caused me to get into a car accident.

While driving 45 mph the accelerator cable broke. As a result, the pedal proceeded to the floor and began to decelerate rapidly. Vehicle was towed to the dealership for repair. . . . . . . Dealer replaced accelerator cable.
Engine accelerated when I was at a stop. The engine began racing. I turned the engine off, and then on again and it still raced for a long period of time. At no time was my foot on the accelerator. The engine was racingby itself. I made a copy of the NHTSA that have been occuring with the Fords but the dealer found nothing wrong with the car. My son has a Ford escape and he just received a notice from the NHTSA about the same problem. The accelerator cable has to be relaced. I have a Ford Focus. Sincerely, mike paglia.
On 01-15-05 at approximately 10:00 hours, my fiancee, myself, and my son were riding in our 2000 Ford Focus se 2. 0 liter dohc. When trying to pass a truck the accelerator broke off completely and the throttle cable snapped. We were then stuck next to the truck with no where to go could not accelerate. If it was not for the evasive actions of my fiancee I may not be talking to you right now. We had to pull onto the opposite side of the road onto incoming traffic. I have taken pictures of the accelerator and the throttle cable and will be keeping the old part. This to me is a serious violation and could result in death or serious injury to someone in the future. I along with my family hope that this does not happen to anyone in the future and it was one of the most fearful experiences I have ever had. I have contacted Ford and I am seeking legal assistance with this matter, due to Ford's lack of assistance.
While driving 45 mph consumer applied the accelerator pedal, but it failed to accelerate. This caused the vehicle to decrease in speed. Consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and pulled over. Consumer inspected the vehicle ,and noticed that the accelerator cable broke. Vehicle was towed to a body shop for inspection, but cause of the failure was not determined. The consumer stated that the accelerator cable snapped in one place and was very weak in another place.
I bought a 2000 Ford Focus on March 11 of 2004 for my daughter, I asked for a repair to be made on the vehicle from the dealership I bought it from before buying the car, it was surging and hesitating. I was told it was repaired, the vehicle didn't do this the next day when I bought it, on March 31 my daughter pulled in to jack in the box, parked her car, put the car in park, took her foot off the brake, the car surged forward throwing her into a concrete wall, the airbags deployed, the windsheild shattered, the fron bumper is totalled, my daughter has a third degree burn on her right forearm resulting from the air bag.
The consumer found that recently a problem with his vehicle when accelerating it doesn't slow down once the consumers foot was off of the gas. The vehicle was in an accident and the consumer believed that the acceleration problem contributed to the accident. When the vehicle was taken to the dealer he was told there was a recall on throttle cable. Then he was told that the vehicle was not recalled due to the VIN. The consumer stated that there have been complaints of this particular vehicle. Recall campaign #00v302000.
The vehicle experienced sudden acceleration while driving 35 mph. The gas pedal went all the way down to the floor. The cable popped out of the throttle mechanism and the vehicle accelerated. Please provide further information.
While traveling on the highway and without prior warning the second gear pedal became stuck, and the pedal went all the way down to the floor. The vehicle accelerated at a very uncontrollable speed, and the consumer had to place the car in neutral at which the vehicle eventually slowed down. Dealer said the throttle cable snapped. Repair cost $201. 09. The consumer was concerned about the malfunction of the vehicle and whether it should be recalled.
While in motion consumer's foot slipped from gas pedal. Consumer tried to put foot back on the pedal, but there was no pedal. Consumer was able to move vehicle to the side of the road. C0nsumer had vehicle towed, and it was stated theat cable to gas pedal broke. . . . .
Was traveling uphill at 30mph and was depressing accelerator pedal, which went to the floor. Vehicle started to drift backwards. Parked vehicle and had it towed next day. Mechanic indicated accelerator cable had broken. It went to the motor, had separated completely.
The cable that connects gas pedal to the engine broke off, I was driving up a hill and had no gas pedal . I called some Ford dealers but they nad never heard of this. I am worried someone might have a very bad accident because of this. I was lucky no one was behind me when it happened.
While traveling at normal highway speed, I was crossing the tacoma narrows bridge when I experienced complete loss of throttle control. The vehicle slowed to a stop with the engine at idle. The accelerator pedal went to the floor. I called 911 and a washington state patrol vehicle responded and pushed me off of the bridge. The vehicle was towed to the nearest Ford dealer where it was discovered that the throttle cable had snapped close to the linkage at the engine. The cable was replaced under warranty. Due to the high volume of traffic on the bridge the stalling of my vehicle caused a large traffic jam and left me in a very unsafe condition.
The throttle cable runs over the distributor wire's and the throttle cable is worn through the rubber down to expose the throttle cable wires as well as one of the distributor wires. Ford sent a recall for 2. 0l engines with a 5-speed manual transaxles, Ford program # 00b59 after that repair my cruise control no longer worked because as soon as the key was put in the ignition and turned forward with or without turning over the engine the brake lights come on and remain on at all times and at all speeds until you turn the ignition completely off. A third problem also deals with a recall fmvvss 201. The new a-pillar trim panels they replaced in my car do not fit. Ford modified the pillars to make them fit in place. You can see the metal from the outside of the car from the insideof the car. Ford had to cut part of the pillars to make them fit and they constantly do not stay in place over the passenger side door. The new a-pillars do not fit properly and Ford modified the recall parts to fit them into place. They even cracked my windshield on the passenger side trying to fit them into place.
While driving at about 20 mph rpm's went to 7, engine revved loudly. Linkage cable had popped out of bracket.
When parked ifo a house, was listening to stereo, shut off stereo and looked down and noticed gas pedal on the floor. Went down to look and the cable had gone thru the eyelet, indicating to me that there was a break in the pedal cable. The sheathing was pulled back and cable pulled out freely and was frayed at the end of appx. 18" from the throttle body. The config on this design is very poor; the cable has two 90 degree turns in it above the radiator and the 90 degree turn closest to the throttle body is where the cable is frayed and snapped apart.
