Steering Is Tight Problems of Ford Focus

Intermittent, now constant epas (electronic power assisted steering) failure. My 20 year old daughter went to eat with friends after work and when she tried to leave to come home (after midnight), she found that the epas had failed. She did manage to drive the vehicle home since traffic was light, and luckily, the epas did not fail while she was driving or in heavy traffic. Without the epas working, the steering wheel is very hard to turn when the vehicle is in motion and nearly impossible to turn while stationary.

We recently purchased a 2012 Ford Focus hatchback for my 16 year old son. This morning, he started the vehicle and began driving away from the house. While doing so he was having difficulty maintaining control of the car due to the power steering being non-functioning. Fortunately I was sitting in the passenger seat and noticed he was struggling. He told me the steering wheel was very hard to turn. I instructed him to pull over but he couldn't turn the wheel hard enough so I asked that he just stop the car. At that time, we switched seats. Sure enough, the power steering was not functioning and the wheel was very difficult to turn. An amber colored warning light was illuminated on the dash. I was able to get the car back home to park it. After shutting it off and returning to check on it later and likely take it to the mechanic as I figured the power steering was completely out, I found that upon restart there was no issue. Since that time I have been conducting research and have found numerous complaints and concerns about the same problem with the same vehicle. Several persons have warned that this has happened to them while in motion, some of which at high speeds on the interstate. This is obviously incredibly concerning, particularly for younger, inexperienced drivers who may panic should this occur while in motion. According to complainant reports and the NHTSA website there is no current recall by Ford for this issue and the particular model. Please help remedy this issue so the safety of drivers of this vehicle, particularly children, and those that share the road with them is ensured. Thank you.

While driving the vehicle, the steering became almost impossible to turn cause me to hit a curb in a city and then a light came on the dash saying power steering failure. The steering is very hard and sticks then release. Unsafe to drive. Scared to ever drive this vehicle again.

I own a 2012 Ford Focus went to pick my kids up from school and killed my car. Then tried to restart my car and my steering wheel was really hard to turn then the steering assist failure popped up on my screen. Tried to restart the battery changed the fuse and it still pops up with the message. And this is my only transportation. It's really hard to steer it. And I'm scared to drive it.

The power steering went out in my car earlier in the day on 9/17/19 when I was making some of my rounds for work. I made a stop at a business, and was only inside for a couple of minutes. I got back in my car, started it and the steering wheel was very hard to move. I backed out and went to a store about 2 miles down the road. Checked some things, but didn't see anything wrong. Started my car and it worked. Later the same evening my boyfriend and I dropped off our kids to go to town real quick. We were only gone from them for about 45 minutes when we went to head back to get them and the steering wasn't working again. There was no noise, no sign, no light, nothing. It just quit. We checked the fuse and it looked fine. It doesn't throw out any kind of code. It shows that it has power. We did make it home, being very cautious. Why has nothing been done to address this issue? there were recalls for the same problem on other vehicles, but not the Focus. Obviously there is a problem that Ford needs to fix.

Steering wheel is loud and hard to steer. Mechanics who have looked at it said the steering rack and pinion had to be replaced and that there was no reason a car this new should have an issue with the steering rack.

After a 30 mile drive, I stopped to fill my tank. When I restarted my vehicle, I received a warning that the power steering boost had failed. I checked under the hood and did not see any other problems. I was able to drive the car back to drop off my passenger, although the steering was extremely tight. After my friend left my car, the power steering came back and the issue has not recurred. I did some research on the internet and found at least 200 other instances of similar events, leading to a total failure, and a $1600 bill from Ford for each occurrence. There is a TSB which exists for this issue, and there was a recall of other Ford vehicles for similar problems. However, the Focus was not included in the recall but it sounds like a similar issue which necessitated the recall of 600k vehicles in 2015. After turning on ignition to the car a warning comes up "steering assist fault" on the information screen near the odometer. The steering wheel is then very hard to turn. This has happened 2 times in the first day of the issue. When I turn the car off and restart the car the problem goes away. I have researched and found several complaints of the same exact issue I am having and some have reported losing steering while driving so I am very concerned about my safety.

Came on after I was attempting to repair the heat/ac fan as it has failed after unhooking the battery post to atemp to reset computer to see if the code would reset it did not. Steering is hard and unsafe if it happens to fail while driving the speed limit on interstate or parkways. It may cause possible accidents if not recalled and a fix happen. When I started my car the steering wheel was hard to turn. I got a warning on the dash that said steering assist fault. This is crazy! the car only has 63000 miles on it. Please have Ford include these Focus cars in the safety recall also. This failure while driving could kill people.

Takata recall- I'm having a problem with my steering. One afternoon I started to car and noticed that my steering wheel was stuck. After a while I turned the car off and let it sit then started it again and the problem was gone. The next day I attempted to drive the car and couldn't because the steering wheel was hard to turn. I waited about 30 seconds and restarted the vehicle. I drove immediately to dealership and the car is in for service . My first car payment is not due. This is a pre owned certified Ford Focus 2016. I would like for Ford to repurchase this car.

My teenage son was operating the vehicle at relatively low speed (below 20mph) in stop and go traffic in a busy city shopping area, the steering suddenly locked and was very difficult to maneuver left or right. He was able to pull the car off the road into a parking lot with tremendous effort. When trying to turn the wheel left or right the car seemed to lock or grab at the wheel and made an awful screeching sound. He said that several warnings flashed on the message center but he did not catch them as he was trying to get out of traffic safely. Once he came to a stop, he noticed that the orange "I" in a box remained lit while the car was running. I went to pick him up and verified the locked steering, noise, and warning light. We left the car overnight and researched potential problems before having it towed to a mechanic. I came across several forums and complaints that sounded very similar to my car's issues. Many of these cars had worked after turning off the vehicle and restarting. So the next day I went and started the car with no issues and had no warning lights or indicators. However, as I pulled out the steering was still very tight and jerky but I was able to man-handle the car enough to make it to a local dealer. No warning lights ever came on this time. I was informed that I must replace the power steering control module and have it reprogrammed to determine if this is the only problem at a cost of approximately $450. I have authorized this repair. The dealer said that after this repair, I may also need to replace the steering gear and have the car aligned at an additional cost of approximately $1500. My car is at 89,700 miles.

I owned my brand new car for approximately 7 days, when the problems began! it had 4 miles on it when I purchased it new! I was driving on a local highway at approximatly 45-55 mph, when the steering started to feel sticky, I felt like I was losing control of the vehicle, it felt as though I was in a major wind storm and was being blown back and forth across the highway! Ive had issues with the steering wheel since I 1st got the car. In the beginning it would like a couple minutes and then be fine. I noticed it when it was super cold or even just kind of cold. There have been a couple of times when the weather was fine and the steering was still very hard to turn.
