I was driving on the interstate going 70mph and my power steering went out on the dash steering assist fault popped up on my dash. I fortunately was able to pull off the interstate with out a accident occurring. It was the scariest event that has ever happened to me and my children. This steering fault could have seriously injured my family or someone else. And their is no active recall but this is a common problem in the 2012 Focus I see online. I have a invoice from firestone that it will be 2,531. 50 to repair power steering rack and pinion assembly. Ford should be held responsible for this and putting my family and others in danger and the repair.
Steering seized up at 70k miles. Elec. Rack & pinion needs replacing $2800! this should not happen at 70k miles - extremely dangerous and expensive to fix on a 5 yr old car. Transmission stutters - was recalled, "fixed" and still hesitates occasionally. Never take an intersection for granted because car might stutter - extremely dangerous sometimes. Gas tank recalled - fixed.

While driving home (five hour road trip) noises started coming from the steering wheel. Felt like it was is binding and grinding. This only happened when the vehicle was in motion. Happen on the highway on my way home, later on city streets, when turning. I immediately took my car to savannah tire to see what was wrong. The dx was rack and pinion. They could not repair my car. I was told that my car was unsafe to drive. The problem started around the first of July. My steering not working properly on a five year car is a problem, this made my car unsafe for me to drive. At any time my steering gear could have went out causing me to have an accident hurting myself or others. I could have died. Ford has had steering issues in the past on my car. The car has had three recalls. One Ford recalled on there own (steering issues). I had to get this problem fixed on my own paying the amount of $2,457. 70 please for the safety of others recall this, so that Ford can take responsibly for the safety of people who have bought this car.
The electric power assist steering stopped working suddenly while driving. My vehicle only has 49k miles. It did this many times in the past. The advice I got from the dealer was to turn the vehicle off and restart. That worked in the past, but this time there is a warning message on the dash. I called the dealer and followed up with their offer to load new software. They told me to bring it in. I did. I also researched the topic and see that Ford recalled other makes for this problem. The dealer said the whole steering rack and pinion has to be replaced, but it is just the electric motor that is bad, just like the recall. This is totally unsafe to drive. I have complained to the dealer many times, but they never helped.

Backing out of driveway and steering wheel siezed up. Warning light comes on saying steering assist fault service. Take it to dealer they say need to replace steering gear assembly rack and pinion and some module. Total 2647. 00 with 88000 miles.
I took a 3 hour trip up to my mother's house that weekend and then drove back another 3 hours and parked it for the night. I had no problems until I started my car up the next morning. A notice came on the dashboard saying "steering assist fault service required. " the steering was extremely stiff and may as well have been locked. No check engine light or anything. So that would mean this happened overnight while the car was stationary and off. I took it to the dealer after unsuccessfully trying to find a basic fix and they said I needed to replace the whole rack and pinion assembly. I figure it happening overnight had something to do with the whole system being evenly soaked with heat from the long drive and cooling very slowly overnight causing cracks in the electrical components. It was a $3000 repair job for a car that had less than 37,000 miles on it albeit a 2015 model year. Due to the warranty being out, I had to pay for this repair out of pocket. Other people I've seen experience this had it fixed under warranty so they had no issues. Unfortunately for me this was a used car and had no warranty left on it.
Steering wheel wouldn't turn after starting up my 2012 Ford Focus se. I turned the car off and back on again, and the steering wheel turned as it should. However, the next day it did it again. I immediately took it into the dealership and was informed the electronic rack and pinion needed to be replaced. This is apparently a very common issue (there are hundreds of complaints on the NHTSA website), yet no recall from Ford. Discouraging.
Power steering failed while driving. Nearly caused an accident. Lucky there were no others on the road. Ford dealership said rack and pinion needed replacing. 2 weeks later the transmission completely failed. Had already been re-programmed as part of the 14m02 program. This didn't fix the juddering and poor gear performance. Dealer says transmission is broken and none of the customer programs apply.
At around 70,000 miles I could hear a scratching/rubbing sound when I turned, around 70,500 I could hear it outside of the vehicle. 71,000 miles the steering rack and pinion failed while driving. I was in a corner and could have died.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. While driving at unknown speeds, the steering wheel seized and "power steering failed" appeared on the instrument panel. The vehicle was towed to van bortel Ford, inc. (71 marsh rd, east rochester, NY 14445, (585) 586-4415) where it was diagnosed that the electric motor failed and the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. My son and I stopped at a rest area on a road trip. When my son started the engine to continue the trip he received the error code "steering assist fault, service now". We went to the nearest Ford dealership who said they wouldn't be able to look at the car for a couple of days and if I was comfortable driving without power steering it wouldn't hurt anything else. Since my 1st car didn't have power steering I decided to give it a go. When we reached our final destination we took the vehicle to a Ford dealer and was told it needed to have the rack and pinion replaced at a cost of $2,400. This seems to be a recurring theme with the Ford Focus. I can only imagine what would have happened if this would have occurred while my son was driving at 65 mph on the new jersey turnpike.
Several times when starting the vehicle, I was unable to turn the streering wheel. It would flash a message saying steering assist failure. The power steering rack and pinion has to be replaced on a car that is 4 years old. It's costing me 2,000.
I have a 2012 Ford Focus at 93000 miles, I started the car one morning on my way to work and the steering assist fault pop up on the screen behind the steering wheel. The steering wheel became hard to turn and I couldn't drive it due to it being not safe to drive. I took it to a Ford dealership and they told me the steering rack and pinion needs to be replace and it'll cost $2200 for the repairs. I've look up online and found man others like me who face this problem. Ford needs to have a recall on this, it's very dangerous for us to drive down the road and suddenly your steering wheel wouldn't turn.
The automatic transmition of my 2012 Ford Focus with 100k miles had hesitation and the engine suddenly shut off when driving due to the transmition fail (it happen too often drivind in the city), after I paid $ 2,200 to the dealership to get it fixed ( they changed clutchs and computer module). The steering wheels started to fail, it suddenly gets too hard to turn, then it gets normal and then fails again. Just when I was turning on a corner the steering wheel got hard to turn and the car was going out of the road (straight). Luckily I was able to hold the steering wheel too hard to control it. Ford want to charge $2,400 to fix the problem (rack and pinion replacement) . I think there should be recalls for those dangerous issues. Thanks.
Rack and pinion area makes a loud rubbing noise. Every turn to the left or right hard to turn when driving at low speeds 0-20 mph.
Loss of power steering warning; sudden and total loss power steering while driving on city street. It took lots of strength to move the vehicle safely to the side of the road. This would be an impossible task for an elderly person. At highway speeds this would have definitely cause and accident. Dealer said I need to replace the entire steering rack & pinion (with alignment) at a cost $2,027. Milage on car is 68,317k.
The electronic rack and pinion failed when driving. The car started displaying a power steering assist error on the display. All power steering was lost and car nearing lost control and caused an accident. Speed was 55 mph on shug jordan. After diagnosing the issue, a replacement power steering unit needed to be installed. Ford made a defective part.
7 years ago I purchased a brand new 2012 Ford Focus from a local dealership. The car currently has 36,600 miles only, but so far had 3 recalls(!). 1 for transmission issues (got it to the dealership, they said they fixed it but to this date it is still stalling when accelerating), 1 for defect door latches, and 1 for the fuel pump. On top of these 2 days ago while trying to back out from a parking lot the steering wheel went dead and a warning came up on the dashboard screen saying the power steering is out. Towed it and took it to the nearest Ford dealership and after two days I got the new that rack and pinion need replacement and it will cost $2,100 parts and labor. Called Ford motors company and they said it's nothing they can do since the car is out of warranty. How can parts like these can fail after only 36,000 miles??? and why Ford motor company doesn't take responsibility for defect cars like these placed on the market to be sold as "new"?!.
Steering was catching while driving and I had to push hard to turn the wheel past certain points as it got caught at certain points. This happened while driving on the highway. That issue stopped but the wheel makes a grinding noise while turning the wheel at low speeds. I was told that the electrical rack and pinion steering needs to be replaced. The vehicle as about 93k miles on it.
Steering assist fault service required warning signal showing on dash board. Steer is very heavy, cannot turn. Cannot make right or left turn. If you are strong enough, and want to turn, you need always occupied reverse road. That's very dangerous. I'd like to say, it lost turn function, out of control. Dangerous for myself, and other vehicle. If you google this problem. A lot of Focus 2012 have same issues. Below link for your reference. All of this can show it's design defect. This problem can happen at any time. . Read more...

Power steering has been going "in and out" for about a year. Resolved temporarily typically by restarting engine. However, power steering permanently failed 9/24/18. T called customer care stating Ford knew about the issue (2017 dismissed lawsuit). The vehicle was stationary in a parking lot. Mileage @88,000. Ford needs to take responsibility for their issues they have with their vehicles. Cost to replace the rack and pinion was $2,200!.
