The rear tail lights are subject to a "brake lamp bulb fault" due to the shoddy wiring and wiring harness that affixes the wires to the trunk lid. After many open and close iterations of the trunk lid, wires become brittle and fray, and eventually fault. The problem is widespread throughout the forums with many individuals resorting to cutting the cables and resoldering or reattaching them with reduced wire tension. This is a major problem and can cause potential rear end accidents when the brake and tail lights fail to illuminate. The fault appears as soon as the car turns on, and can sporadically go away when driving. As sporadically as it disappears, it reappears and remains. This is absolutely a design flaw with wiring not shielded in any way and simply wrapped in tape.

I recently brought my 2014 Focus in to the dealer, because the trunk would not open. According to the Ford dealer, this is a known issue, and the wiring needed to be replaced. Although I paid the whopping $421. 30 for the repair, including a $120 diagnostic fee, I feel that Ford should take responsibility since this is a known issue unrelated to normal wear and tear on a vehicle and issue a recall.

Dual clutch and electrical wiring harness shifted transmission in drive when I was in park resulting the car wrecking into my garage. Canister purge valve stuck open resulting in low fuel pressure causing the vehicle to stall when driving on the highway. Several occasions the car gave me inaccurate gas mileage miles to empty causing me to become stranded. Transmission shutter when the vehicle is off but you open a door or turn on a light. Trunk came open while I was in the car wash. Another ncident almost causing me to wreck when I wss braking the car accelerated. Death trap!.
Hatchback wiring harness between body and hatchback, has multiple wire insulation failure and wire breakage causing fuses to blow and non-functioning parking lights, reverse lights, break lights, instrument column lights, and uncontrolled release of electrical trunk while driving.

70 amp fuse blows while driving, seemingly at random times. This fuse feeds power to a fuse panel located in trunk. When this fuse blows the radio, power windows, power locks, power seats and heated seat function, parking aid system, and Smart key system do not function. Due to the Smart key not working it makes the car extremely difficult to restart if it had been shut off. If the issue happens while driving the car will continue to run normally other than the noted systems. I had the car at the dealer twice for a total of two weeks, they were unable to duplicate the issue after replacing the fuse and driving the car around town. I got the car home today after it's second trip to the dealer and took apart a panel in the trunk that covers the suspect fuse panel and wiring. I found that the wire bundle for this fuse box runs through a plastic guard until about a foot away from the fuse box, when the wires exit this guard they run tight around the edge of the trunk and come into contact with a sharp metal edge, this edge had cut through the insulation of the main power feed and shorted out. I have attached pictures of what I found. While the circuit was protected by a 70 amp fuse, it still must have created a good amount of heat during the time it was shorted, and there is a felt panel not a few inches away.
The contact owns a 2005 Ford Focus. The contact stated that the middle brake light stopped working due to the wiring harness in the hatchback. Also, the lock on the hatchback did not work properly and the harness leading to the battery needed to be replaced due to the failure within the hatchback. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and repaired. The mechanic stated that the harness for both the battery and hatchback needed replacing due to the failure of the middle brake light. The manufacturer was not notified of the failures. The VIN was invalid. The failure mileage was 187,000.
Bought vehicle 2nd hand, cash, everything worked fine. Now, I have no brake lights, & my door locks no longer work on the remote, or the "all lock/unlock" button, & now my trunk latch is not working correctly. The door locks are self locking (meaning that they lock at any given time whenever they please. ) the brake switch has been replaced, all bulbs have been checked & replaced, fuses keep getting blown. Cannot locate fuse for the door locks. Ford has a campaign for the year 2000 for a door latch issue, campaign #05s27 NHTSA id# 05v-030. Also, campaign #05s50 NHTSA id #00v-411 for a tail lamp issue. There are no recalls on this yet after doing weeks of research I am finding that it is an issue with the Ford Focus from 2000 to current. After calling several dealers, none of them would tell me anything, & that "they didn't recall any problems before from anyone else". How is it that I can find this issue on the internet but the dealers "never heard of it"? why is there no change in the indicated issue of the wiring harness to the rear tail light assembly? wouldn't this be a hazard? I didn't know they weren't working until I got pulled over by law enforcement. So, this issue happens while the vehicle is being driven!!! therefore, a diligent owner who checks their lights regularly will not know it happens until (a) said person gets hit from behind, or (b) gets pulled over by law enforcement. . The trunk light would not come on when trunk was opened (replacing the bulb didn't help). Later, the 'door open' dash light came on and stayed on. The electric trunk open button sometimes would not open trunk. A bit of troubleshooting with a vom at the trunk light pointed to an electrical problem (a voltage drop when a new bulb was placed in the trunk light socket). Turns out that the wiring bundle (containing six individual multistrand wire lines) had five of the wires lines fatigued apart , breaking the five circuits. The wire lines were sometimes making intermittent contact when the trunk was opened and closed, not necessarily with the matching wire line. I could hear noise as the wires were moved past each other (not sure if this was just physical scratching or, worse, electrical sparking). Since I sometimes carry a gasoline container in the trunk (lawnmower gas container returning from gas station), I feel that the design of this wiring to the trunk is faulty and could lead to a fire under the right (and not uncommon) circumstances. After several conversations with the Ford motor CO. , a repair was made (I partially paid for the repair) where the wiring was replaced. I am not sure if the repair will be any safer than the original design; hence this complaint with the hope that a safer design (e. G. , one without such a tight radius of bend) could developed and retrofitted into this car.

The deck lid wiring harness breaks due to fatigue from opening and closing the hatch. In my case, 6 wires in the harness had been completely severed. Because of this, my tail light was out, the door ajar light was on and the brake lights were always on when the car was in drive. Besides the danger of being rear ended because the brake lights are always on, depending on which wires break or have their insulation crack open, there are a number of bad situations:
* all rear lights could turn off. * the trunk could open when you apply the brakes. * the trunk could open when you use a turning indicator. This is a known issue with the 2000 Focus hatchback, but there was no recall for the deck lid wiring harness after that year. I just wanted to let you know that it happened on our 2004 Focus hatchback, and it can leave owners and other drivers on the road in a potentially dangerous situation. To correct the issue, I spliced the broken wires back together.

The wiring in my 2001 Ford Focus zx3 that connects the rear hatch to the front of the car deteriorates significantly. The wiring on my car has stripped through the insulation, and has broken 4 of the 8 wires completely in half. This disables the center brake light, the license plate lights, the windshield wiper, and the trunk lid causing a potentially hazardous situation.
Took the car to the dealer the same day the left tail light turn signal went out. According to the service manager, they could not remove the bulb because when the bulb "shorted," it melted plastic around the bulb. I had to buy an entirely new tail light and socket assembly for over $100. I was told by him that this happens "a lot" on the Focus wagons and he had replaced 6 of them that day. When I expressed my anger and disbelief at the cost and asked why this wasn't a recall item, he said not to blame him because he didn't design it. I am angry about the cost, but also whether this is a potential safety hazard. It was 5 degrees the day this happened and such a "short circuit" may have safety implications.

Fuse was constantly blown for license plate lights, loss of power door lock function via the key fob or door switches, failure of automatic door lock system when driving, and loss of use of trunk/decklid release using the key fob or dash switch. Dealership diagnosis determined the cause to be broken and shorted out wires leading from the side of the main body of the vehicle to the base of the trunk/decklid. Repair was made with wire splices. Note: early 2000 sedan models were recalled with a similar issue. Quite a few hatchback and sedan owners after 2000 are experiencing a similar issue.

The contact owns a 2003 Ford Focus. While checking the brake light bulbs, the contact noticed that the wires were cracked. The dealer stated that the wire harness needed to be replaced. The current and failure mileages were 73,281.
In 2004 vehicle's ignition key lock fails to work properly. Vehicle is towed to Ford authorized repair and they correct the problem. In 2006 vehicle's ignition key lock fails again. Vehicle is taken to Ford authorized repair and corrected again. Both times I was left stranded since the vehicle's ignition key would not turn to start the vehicle and could not be removed from the ignition. Vehicle's dash lights suddenly failed while driving at night. Lights come on and off. Several times during nightime driving the lights fail. Vehicle's door power door locks and trunk locks fail and cannot be opened with keyless entry. A fuse continues to fail possibly due to a short in the wiring system.

We have a 2000 Ford Focus se and about two weeks ago the headlights stopped working (late at night). It was then discovered that every time a new fuse was put in, it would just blow right away. We took it to a private automobile repair shop and they discovered that the deck lid wire harness had broken wires at the bend area causing the loss of power and lights which resulted in damage to other wires. There were multiple wires which were damaged and needed to be repaired. This was all because of the defect in the deck lid wire harness. We have a copy of a NHTSA recall bulletin which states that this defect was under a recall in December 2000. We have called Ford and also spoke to our local Ford dealer and they are telling us that our car does not have a recall for this defect. It is very obvious to anyone who would see the rear deck lid that there is a very clear defect. The wires are frayed and melted together. The gentleman who repaired our car said this is definitely the cause of the problem. The wires on the deck lid are still need of repair and something needs to be done to the bend area to prevent this from happening again. Ford is telling us that they are not responsible and it is not their problem. The reference number for the NHTSA recall is 00v411000. Mfg. Campaign 00s50. We would appreciate any help in getting this matter settled to prevent further damage. We would also like to be reimbursed for the garage bill which was caused from the deck lid wire harness defect. Thank you in advance for your help with this.
The rear wiper in my 2001 Ford Focus zx3 stopped working. Upon investigation I found that 5 wires in the wiring harness going into the hatch lid had cracked insulation and exposed conductors. One wire was completely severed. I have used electrical tape to temporarily render the situation safe until I can make a more permanent repair. I have also learned than many other 2001 Focus owners have experienced the same problem. I believe the exposed conductor constitute a serious fire hazard.
Our Ford Focus has been nothing but problem since we bought the thing. The wiring was shot about 4 months in, and we could no longer use the electronic locks, or trunk opener. However, the latest problem would be the ignition. I was getting gas when I went to put the key in the ignition and it was stuck. Luckily, after a brief panick attack I managed to get it to start. Today, unfortunately we weren't so lucky, and the steering wheel, brake pedal and ignition are all frozen and are unable to start the car. I now have no vehicle for work tomorrow morning, and am furious with this unreliable vehicle. Someone must do something about this!.
The contact stated the vehicle was leaking water into the trunk which houses the brake light module, and the rear license plate lights. This caused the wiring module to corrode. After the repairs were made the vehicle is still had the same problems.
Dt:the consumer received a recall on the deck lid wire harness, the recall repair was performed at a Ford dealership in 2001. This recall repair did not repair the problem, the brake lights and license plate light failed afterwards. The consumer returned to the dealer, there were some repairs, but the consumer did not know what repairs were exactly made at that time. Several months later, the brake lights went out because the consumer was pulled over by authorities for not having brake lights. The consumer returned to the dealership and paid for the repairs out of pocket. The next occurrence resulted in the consumer smelling smoke for which she could not determine the cause. She pulled over for a moment, and began to pull out to drive to the dealer, and a passerby honked the horn. The consumer noticed smoke coming form the trunk compartment. The consumer shut the engine off, and while looking for something to put the fire out, black smoke began to erupt from the trunk. Upon inspection, the fire had extinguished by itself and the smoke was coming from the wiring. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, who wanted to inspect the vehicle further. The dealer spliced the wires up into the area where the fire was ,and now consumer is concerned a fire may again occur. The consumer has not contacted Ford at this time.
Rear deck lid brake light incredibly sensitive to vibration with push in bulbs. Just closing trunk causes brake light to fail. Dealer claims this is not a recall.
55,000 miles on the vehicle. On 3/25/05, while parked & locked, the ignition malfunctioned on its own, resulting in a fire that burned the steering column. The fire caused other damages and heavy smoke within the sealed passenger compartment. The fire extinguished itself with the lack of oxygen. Pictures of the wiring harness, steering column and interior are available with the insurance company claim file.

Ford blue oval certified dealer performed recall 00v41100 . Onwer notice rattle in trunk lid when opening or closing , mechanic had left both tag light bulbs out and they where moving around in trunk lid. Owner made repair and notify dealer when taking vehicle back for other repairs.
Vehicle recalled in February 2001 to repair problem:"some of the affected vehicles have a rigid vinyl sleeve around the wiring at the hinge point of the rear decklid. During decklid opening and closing, movement is concentrated at this point and may cause one or more wires within the harness to fatigue and break. Depending on which wires break, it may result in the loss of license plate lamps, center high-mount stop lamps, stop lamps or tail lamps. Loss of this rear lighting could increase the risk of an accident. " took vehicle in for repair but the following have failed since: right tail lamp, reverse lights. On 09/12/2007 a Ford customer relations rep stated that my vehicle has never had any recalls. I have four of five of the notices they sent me.
