2005 Ford Focus station wagon- loss of tail lights, high mount stop light, dash lights, running lights due to short in liftgate wiring. The wiring harness in the liftgate fatigues at the bend area. Wires break, resulting in a open or short which blows fuse. The blown fuse results in no high mount stop light, running lights, tail lights, and instrument lights. In addition the heated rear defrost and windshield wiper also fail. The harness must be replaced to fix the problem. This issue was part of a recall in 2000- NHTSA campaign id number 00v411000. My car is a 2005. The problem was never fixed in production.

-2000 Ford Focus lx - bought used on April 14th. Both interior and exterior of car in excellent condition, ran extremely well, one owner repo, clean title. -was rear-ended in very low speed, low impact collision, no frame buckling, bending, or damage to car other than scratched rear bumper - truck lid will not latch now. Multiple mechanics and appraisers - unable to find problem. -while driving, dash gauges and car speakers will suddenly stop working (speedometer goes to 0, odometer goes blank, fuel gauge goes to 0) and then spontaneously come back on with no after effects. Car stalled while stopping after one of these episodes. Occasionally when car is started, the odometer will spontaneously reset without prompting (not the main one, the resetable one). -random codes being thrown to computer - car has had two diagnostics run in two weeks, the first for two codes: 1. A mechanical issue, 2. For electrical difficulties in the dashboard - the car was thoroughly inspected and no defects were found. Seven days later the computer reported an "evaporative system leak" - once again the car was thoroughly inspected and no defects were found. After the first diagnostic, a rear brake light went out - after removing the light and "fiddling" with the wiring, the mechanic got its normal function to resume. -the car has 36,000 miles, I had the brakes inspected the day after the car started shaking violently when I pressed the brake pedal. The rotors are warped terribly and I will have to have the entire brake system replaced, including the rear drums - I do not consider this normal, especially in such a young car. -it has had two recalls filled in the last month, one for a pinch bolt and the other for a wheel bearing. No other recall campaigns were open. These problems have continued since the recalls were completed. -I've owned this car for less than a month. The cars pre-purchase inspection came up clean. The car is no longer under any kind of factory warranty.
Here's a serious safety defect that needs to be corrected. Since I bought my 2000 Focus zts (with less than 45,000 miles on it) it has had all the recall services done (six, if I recall correctly) and two windshields replaced too (due to edge cracks developing). This week a serious new problem surfaced: a wire sheared off within a connector that goes to the ignition coil, part of the main engine harness. I was traveling and all of a sudden the engine simply died. If this happened in traffic or on the highway, a serious accident would have resulted. Luckily, I was on a quiet street. This is a manufacturing defect that Ford should acknowledge and correct at no charge to the owner. To make the matter worse, the dealer tells me that the connector that failed is not available from Ford as a replacement part -- the whole main engine harness has to be replaced, with more than eight hours of labor required, plus the cost of the harness. It will end up costing close to a thousand dollars. If the connector were available it would cost under three hundred dollars to repair.
Consumer states that while vehicle was parked, it caught on fire. After inspection for the cause of fire was told that the fire originated from the wire harness. It was brittle. Mr.
No summary. Dt.
My father checked the battery area, after reading an article in the dallas morning news. No safety defect listed.
While driving on the highway at approximately 55mph in the center lane, the consumer blacked out and hit the guardrail. Upon impact, the airbags deployed, and then a fire began under the hood. The consumer is very concerned because the vehicle had completely burnt in 10 minutes. The consumer feels that the Ford Focus should be taken off of the market, stating that for the 48 years she had been driving, she had never experienced a situation of this type and feels that something was smoldering or burning in the vehicle as she was driving.

Was driving home from work last Thursday (10 minutes on the interstate, 97 degrees, full ac), when the car started to lose power followed by transmission lurching and engine trying to die. Pulled the remaining block into my apts and opened hood expecting to find overheated engine, and ended up see a bunch of flame and signing my thumb. Got fire extinguisher and put it out, and called fire dept. No work was done to engine other than a new air filter 4000 miles ago. So far the Ford dealer wants to write it off as complete loss and leave it to my insurance. Took out my air intake, melted battery, melted battery wires, ruined hood, scroched headlight, smoked interior, and who knows what got sucked into engine through the intake. Dealer wouldn't tow because "warranty tows have to be called in through Ford customer service". . Read more...
The date listed is the first failure date. The sensor went out and the car kept running. On 7/1/02, the sensor failed again and this time a fuse blew and the car stopped running. I was driving 70 mph with 3 passengers in my car. The car was towed to the nearest dealer, who "repaired" the car and I arrived on 7/3/02 to pick it up. I drove approximately 3 miles away from the dealership and the part failed again. I was driving approximately 30 mph in heavy traffic. The car was towed back to the same dealer, who told me the part failed another two times while they were attempting to determine what was wrong. Finally, they replaced the wiring harness and the car has run since then. I finally picked up the repaired car on 7/10/02. I contacted Ford (the corporation), who told me they were not aware of any problem with the part and their engineering department would do something about it if there were enough complaints. I was told by a service technician at the dealership that repaired my car, who told me it was "a bad Ford part" and that there was nothing they could do about it until Ford came out with a new part. I told Ford what I was told by the dealership, they contacted the technician who denied saying that. I would just like to put some pressure on Ford to assure that this vehicle runs properly and prevent this problem from happening again. I was lucky enough to avoid an accident in previous incidents, but may not be as lucky the next time.
Dealership treated us like criminals(my wife and I) they gave us a rental, and harassed us about the rental even though by maine lemon laws, they are supposed to provide us with one. They threatened the police with us for theft of the rental. I noticed on your web-site yesterday that one day prior to our fire NHTSA started an investigation pertaining to vehicle fires on 2000 Focus. We have attained the services of an attorney in this matter. Thank you for all your help.

After I started the car I turned on the ac unit. Minutes later as I turned a corner I noticed smoke coming from under the hood, near the defroster area. I pulled the car to the side of the road got out and called the police. The smoke got thicker and then a fire started under the hood. I first noticed it as it entered the vehicle via the passenger side a/c vent. Fire department spent about 25 min to put out fire. Car was total loss, notified insur and dealer. Insur to pay lease balance. Little to no response from Ford.
07/11/01 10 month old car would not start. Had been parked for 5 1/2 hours. Had vehicle towed to dealership. They informed us that the main wiring harness(said consisted of 12 wires) appeared to have been eaten by an animal. That the repair, not replacement, would be $325. Not covered under warrenty. (it says nothing in our warrenty about this not being covered), we okayed the repairs. On 07/13/01 I contacted the dealership they informed me that they had fixed the wires and the car still would not start. He told us that he jumped it and hooked it up to the diagnostic center and it gave him a code 13, but he didnt know what that meant or why the car woulnt start. On 07/17/01 we were told that the computer was dead, it would be an additional $950 not covered. On 07/20/01 the mang. Of dayton called me and said " get your car off our lot, return our loaner or we will report it stolen". When we got there are car was not put back together, they had written the word "f*cker" on the cars computer, and gave us the.
Vehicle caught on fire due to an electrical wiring harness that may have shorted out, which was located next to the battery. )claim#25-5541-145).
Vehicle caught fire while driving. Smoke & fire first noticed in rear seat area. Total loss with fire moving from back to front.
While vehicle was in park postion and turned off, the vehicle caught fire on its own . The entire engine compartment was in flames. While on fire the car started and rolled forward over a curb into a building (not causing damage to building). It looks as though it was not electrical because many of the wires and fuses inside the vehicle had not been shorted out. It is being investigated by the manufacturer. This is a seriuos problem that needs to be looked at, it spontaneously caught fire on its own . The vehicle is planned to be totalled.
