I have a 2006 Ford Freestar. I was driving down the interstate with my three children in the back driving about 75 mph, started to go uphill and all of a sudden the van acted like it was in neutral and wouldn't go when I gave it gas. The interstate was extremely packed and I'm sitting in a van with my kids ages 3-12 and my van is almost stopping. It was very hard to get it off the road and it was very scary! I was about 2 hours from home with no money for a tow truck, so I turned it off and waited a few minutes, and started it back up. It was still jerking and not catching gears on the way home. Was about 20 minutes away from home when the wrench light came on and it started doing it again. Made it home, got online and started looking up what might be wrong and found hundreds and hundreds of complaints about this van. It is the torque converter going out. Ford has a recall on the 2004 and 2005, and even thought the transmissions are the same and the issue is the same, they won't do a recall on the 2006. Is it going to take someone getting killed for them tpo issue a recall????.

Car history: the transaxle light has gone before when we travel through vt mountains, but turning off the engine and letting it sit, and restarting it, the light would go off. Upon getting home safety, our mechanics didn't find anything to repair and so left it be, and would only sometimes see it when we traveled through the vt mountains, a few times a year. All recall repairs were up to date. There were no other symptoms. Incident: as we nearing the top of a mountain, the transaxle light came on. Unlike the other times, the transmission suddenly failed to be in the correct gear, so unlike the other times, we were very concerned. We pulled over immediately, and as we reached the shoulder smoke began pouring out of the vents. We quickly evacuated our kids, and as we were getting them out we noticed that there was already fire coming from under the hood, near the windshield, on the passenger side. We are so glad our kids were awake, and able to unlatch their own child carseats, and able to get out quickly. The fire spread to the entire van, consuming everything, at a great expense to us. (and others; our accident blocked a significant amount of traffic for about 3 hours. ).

The back lift gate on my 2004 Ford Freestar will not latch. The dashboard light indicates a door is open. It appears there is some rust etc in both the mechanisim and the bottom stationary latch piece.
This is about a 2005 Ford Freestar. When accelerating, specially in rainy conditions, the vehicle's engine makes a screechy noise and loses power. The screechy noise sometimes stops and the vehicle is able to continue moving. Usually when it's wet/rainy the engine loses power and vibrates. It's very dangerous and stressful because it usually happens when attempting to pass slower vehicles on the left lanes and when the vehicle loses power we attempt to move to the right lane's shoulder. Lucky that this happened when traffic was light at 6am. After restarting the engine I drove on side roads to reach my destination. This has happened at least twenty times since 2013.

Rpm's surge, loss of power while driving, already had recalls done and still having problems, trans axle light comes on when doing highway speeds. , I think the recall needs to be on the electrical system and where the main computer is located. The main computer is right beneath the awning for the wiper assembly. . . Lots of potential water damage and many unhappy customers. This is supposed to be a family vehicle and it is more like driving a ticking time bomb. I would hate to be on the highway and the vehicle just suddenly stop. Not good Ford!!! not good!.
The van won't start in the morning when left overnight. I have brought a new battery and alternator still won't start. Have to jump start the van in the morning.
I have a 2004 Ford Freestar that has this exact problem 13v081000. I called the dealer and since I'm in kansas they will not take care of the repairs. I have photos and this is exactly what is described in the recall. My back seat cannot lock forward. This is a safety issue. Can you please help.
I was leaving my residence in my 2004 Freestar when it all of a sudden just cut off. It started right back up and shut off again, started back up drove about 100 yards shut off again. I drove it back to my house as I had barely gotten out of my drive. However to drive it back to the house I had to continually restart the vehicle. Next day got in it and it would not go in reverse and in neutral the engine idled up very high. I put it in drive it moved, put it back in reverse nothing repeated this action, heard a loud click and van went in reverse. After a few minutes it seemed to change gears sitting in the drive. I haven't driven it any where, scared to. Also we just purchased this van used 10 days ago. Dealer said bring it in has a 30 day warranty. Did I mention it rained Sunday and I didn't attempt to drive it until Wednesday and all this started. Read on this sight about all the pcm problems after rain.
I was driving my kids to school, runnining approximately 30 mph and all of a sudden realized that my engine was reving up and I was not speeding up. It happened out of no where. Scared me to death because I was on a busy road and had a tractor and trailer behind me that almost ran me over. Had to have my car towed to the shop to find out that my transmission had gone bad. It cost me $3400. 00 to have a rebuilt transmission put in. Just one year ago the pcm module went bad and Ford charged me $3000. 00 to put a new one in. Still had the same problem. I took my car to an independent auto mechanic shop and found out that the Ford dealer never replaced the pcm module. Had to pay the independent shop another $1000. 00 to actually put a new pcm module in. Have called Ford several times and they won't do anything about it. I have read hundreds of post of other people who are having the same problem. Somebody needs to do something to Ford. I took all my paperwork to an attorney and he told me that I didn't have enough money to fight a company the size of Ford and to just get rid of the vehicle. I don't have the money to buy a new vehicle and when I tried to trade it in, the guy at the dealership said that they weren't going to give me much for it on the trade in because of all the problems that the van had. Please someone help to make Ford do a recall on these vans! they are ripping people off and nothing is being done about it.
After stopping at a stop sign, I accelerated to proceed, and as my vehicle started to go it just as quickly died. With traffic behind me and coming at me from the left and right, I was lucky enough that those cars were able to stop in time and not broadside me or rear end me, and I was able to coast to the side of the road. Long story short, it was the torque convertor! I see that there was a recall on the 04 and 05 models but not the 2006. Having researched thoroughly online for this problem, clearly, mine is not an isolated incident, as there are numerous other 2006 Ford Freestar owners who have experienced the same torque convertor failure between 120k and 150k miles, complaints stated in many Ford forums and other internet venues. Of the 75+ I read, about 50% had registered a complaint about the torque convertor failure in the 06 Freestars with NHTSA. Clearly, Ford needs to address this problem in the 2006 as well. Thank you for taking the time to read my info and ¿complaint and for your prompt response.
2004 Ford Freestar. Consumer wants to know if there is any information of defects on vehicle.
Transmission failed with no signs. I am pregnant and had my 3 other children with me. Checked online and found out thar Ford is using a faulty torque converter/transmission.

I bought my 2005 Ford Freestar in 2005. Almost immediately after buying it we had instances of the power locks not working. The driver door will unlock but the rest will not. We have even had to climb in through the driver door to unlock the back doors by hand then try to get groceries out of the way back through the middle doors. This is also a huge safety concern for me. If I were to get into an accident and be incapacitated and my kids were in the car, they wouldn't be able to open those doors because it keeps them locked even if you push the buttons to open them automatically. I am sick of dealing with this issue. There are so many forums on line where other people have the same problem. This needs to be fixed!.
The transmission is slipping in and out and very sluggish and no power, backfiring and smells very strong of gas fumes. Has been going on for a few weeks. I was driving on the highway and it slipped out of drive and lost power. I had to slow myself down at a pace to turn the van into a safe area off the highway I was traveling at the speed of 60. . Very scary . . . The van would not move. I had the van towed by a friend at the cost of $65. 00 (he saved me a lot of money ) which was not offered back to me from the dealership. . . . I didn't know abt the recall or the pcm problem until I was looking for info on ytube. . I called my dealer where I had bought the van( and it is paid for) when I talked with an advisor he said for me to have it towed to the dealership and they would look at it. I refused to pay for the tow (they did do that at least) he called me and said that the toque converter was under a recall and they would replace that part. . . 3 days later I went to pick the van up and it still wasn't driving right. Still loosing power and gas smell and it felt as if the transmission was slipping still. It was a Saturday and the lady helping me knew nothing couldn't even find my paperwork and had to call the advisor. She said to call him back on Monday so needless to say I tried to drive the van and it just wasn't drivable so I parked it. . Was afraid it might do more damage if I didn't. On Monday I called and spoke to the advisor and he informed me that they only did the recall part as I had requested to be done. He also said the tech told him that the van needed a lot of work. I in return ask why they didn't check out all of the problems and his answer was we did the recall and that's all we can do unless I wanted to pay $100. 00 for a diagnostic . So needless to say my van sits until I can pay or Ford does something to make this right. The ball is n your park Ford.
Was going to accelerate and when I did the vehicle just stopped going, the vehicle did stay on no lights no warning I coasted to side of road. Stopped then tried to go again and the transmission would not engage. Tried all the gears and nothing would engage had to call tow truck to come get it now waiting on mechanic to tell me what is going on!.
The car would start then stall. I would be driving and it would just slow down like no gas getting into engine and stall out . I took it to Ford dealer (crest Ford centerline michigan) they ran it on a scope. Told me I needed turbine shaft speed sensor. They replaced it and called to say my vehicle was fine and ready to go. I picked up car on Monday evening and on Wednesday car had to be towed back to the dealer. Car would start but would not drive. Ford could not find problem and finally I called a friend to ask for a solution. Because of all the issues with the pcm and his expertise I called my Ford advisor han schwallbach and told him to check the pcm for water damage. He called me back shortly and said they found the water damage. This is a van made very wrong with a design so that your windshield lets water flow onto the cowl and then damages the brain for the car. I now have to pay 1000. 00 to fix a mistake Ford motor created. This is a problem for everyone who owns this vehicle. I hope Ford fixes it on a recall before someone dies. I feel as a consumer I should not have had to go figure out whats wrong with my car on my own. Ford mechanics should know and be experienced. This will be my last Ford with the way they handle their cars.
Travelling at 55 mph, vehicle suddenly lost forward motive power in traffic. Vehicle would not shift into reverse or drive. Vehicle was stalled in neutral. Had to shut off the vehicle and restart after several minutes. Drive engaged for two minutes, then lost power again. Vehicle had to be towed to Ford motor company where the torque converter was replaced per recall. Vehicle will still not engage in forward or reverse. Ford technicians said they are unsure of the problem, that the recalled part should have fixed the issue.
Multiple times since April 2013 this vehicle has started stalling at stop signs and traffic lights, when shifting gears the vehicle's gas would have to be slightly accelerated first and then it would move in its gear with force. Starting in July all the vehicle's power would cut off at traffic lights and stop signs and would have to be restarted. After receiving notice of the 2013 recall for the torque converter and taking it to a Ford dealership, it was then told by a dealership service rep that the transmission would need to be replaced due to accessive fluids from the torque converter affecting the transmission and damaging it. This has taken place sept. 2013.
Driving out of town on the highway traveling at 55mph and my van quit accelerating and quickly lost speed. Pressed on gas pedal with no results. Was able to pull slightly off the road and put my car in park, turned it off and turned vehicle back on to find it would not reverse drive forward in any gear or move. Car does start and run but will not drive.
After years of problems, previous postings on this site, and 3 pcms later. . . The story continues: our van has been in the shop 5 times within ~ 4-5 weeks, and the dealership keeps working to seal the pcm unit. The unit was sealed by Ford with standard module seals, green expandable foam, etc. , but water still got into the computer housing. During research on the Freestar's computer problems, I read about the clip slots (where the pcm fits into the van) providing a means of water intrusion also, so they took it out again and sealed those. I got the van out of the shop, and the next day the check engine light came on. We took it by an auto parts place for a scan, and it showed a pcm problem. (the guy at the auto parts store said he had a 2005 Freestar, and his pcm had shorted out also from water damage. ) at least, this time a code was given! generally, codes are not generated since the malfunctioning computer is the code generator. I don't know if another pcm has shorted out in our van, or if water has once again seeped into the unit. The wet winter in georgia has practically rendered my van useless for the past couple of months. The van is truly a "fair weather" vehicle. To find more information on this issue, google "2005 Ford Freestar pcm water intrusion" or visit any of the auto safety sites on-line such as NHTSA or arfc. Org. I am currently seeking legal counsel regarding this issue, since Ford has failed to take responsibility for the problems. Unfortunately, pcm issues have often remained undetected due to the lack of code indications. (it took almost 2 years for one of many mechanics to diagnose our Freestar's issues, and that was a result of on-line research. ) pcm water intrusion problems usually are manifested as transmission or engine issues such as no reverse, erratic gear changes, rpm "revs", or other unexplained occurrences.
The pcm internal computer is crashed and cause the veh to run poorly and not start, drained batter, etc - this is an issue with a lot of 2004 Freestars as I read online and was told to submit the info so that maybe they will do a recall and get this fixed. Thank god it did not happen while driving.
Pcm module got water in it. Had it replaced by dealer, charged 765. 02. Now 14 months later car back in dealer for same issue and their one year service warranty has expired. About ready to spend another 800. 00 to fix. Obviously a design flaw, no question about it.
Message center dims as to be unreadable during daylight driving, making it impossible to read warnings or mileage remaining or servic needs.
I got into my van, after dropping my mom off and was during approximately 15 miles am hour, got half way down her street when I heard this strange noise, like the sound of ron's revving on a race car or something. Than. My rpm gage was going all the way up and down. It was moving pretty slow, and I got scared and pulled over and put it in park and shut it down. I than tried to start it up again and it would not go . It just kept revving. The ron's moving up and down again. I had to have it towed to a transmission shop and they charged me $1,550 to have trainee rebuilt. I was out of a vehicle for months trying to come up with the money. Also spending money on rentals to get to work and bring my kids to school. Than just three months after getting my van back, I drove to the akron reservation and nearly the same thing happened driving up a hill on the way back. I had to have it towed again and went without my van for another week and a half. They fixed it again and than told me there was a recall on the torque converters through Ford. The 2004 and 2005 Ford freastar. My van is an 06, and their are a lot of 2006 story's and complaints I have heard besides mine. Ford needs to extend the recall and add the 2006 models also, because it's the same defective problem as the 04, and 05.
I opened the power liftgate with key fob and as I was unloading groceries the door started coming down on me and would not stop, hitting me hard in the head as I try to get out from under it.
When the vehicle is wet the system seems to short circuit itself. It causes it to shimmy and shake and it wont accelerate. We noticed it several times and took it in where we were told it was the camshaft sensor but after having it replaced twice it is still having the issue. The check engine light is contiguously on and it blinks erratically when ever any water is present. I've been told the sensor can go faulty do to a coil issue allowing water to leak on things it shouldn't.
Stop running sometime would start, then wouldnt start, took to a shop they said look at it been submeris or under water,at eclt plug where, wet with water, said it wood need new wiring harnes, possilbe computer box. . At cost of $1200-1500 part and then there labor. . Here in kenai alaska. . Got to fixer if I want to do this. . . I brough this used here came up from the south ,arazona, done car fax all good.
I purchased 4 tires from midas on 03/2010 & when I just had an oil change on 09/2014, they said at midas that they couldn't rotate the tires because they had dry rot. I tried to find the manufactured date on the tires and discovered that it was covered with a rubber seal on all 4 tires. My receipt shows that they were manufactued in 2008, which is 2 years before I purchased them. Is this legal for them to conceal the manufactured dates? and is it legal for midas to sell me 2 year old tires? if my receipt is correct or they could have been older than that.
Difficult to diagnose! symptoms of a wet pcm module manifests itself in many forms. We've experienced most of them by this point in our ~3 year battle with our Freestar. Randomly, our van would not: start, go into reverse, give warning lights, drive forward without stalling, allow certain systems to function properly. In other situations, it would: run roughly, break down, rev up unexpectedly, create transmission issues, etc. Seals wear down and allows water to enter into the computer, due to its location under the windshield. One of the greatest problems of all is the lack of diagnostics for this issue. We've had our vehicle towed in, only to find diagnostic codes did not show up when the van was checked out. Surprisingly, the car would usually start up and drive without a problem after being towed into the mechanic. After several towing experiences, we simply decided to leave our car stranded for a day or two if possible and return later to drive it away without a problem. We've replaced pumps, coils, transmission components, plugs, wires. . In an effort to get the van to work properly. Finally, one mechanic did on-line research and found the pcm problem with the 2005 Freestar. After finding water in the computer housing, he suggested that we buy a rebuilt one (Ford does not supply pcm's for this van anymore) to see if that would solve the problems. However, the Ford dealership had to install the computer so that the programming could be completed. Otherwise, the original keys would not work. In summary, the pcm did solve the problems, until the next weather event. Then, the problems started all over again. We have now had the computer replaced, dried, and/or sealed several times, but water keeps getting inside. The local Ford dealership and other mechanics have been working diligently in an effort to seal the pcm. Recall and class action needed!.
Purchased car in Nov 08. In Dec 09 had transmission rebuilt (remanufactured by Ford) in June of 2013 needs transmission again!! went in to Ford dealership and asked for all paperwork. Found out this will be the 4th total transmission in the life of my very well maintained car! warranty history stated Nov 07 overhauled transmission 43085 mi Dec 09 rebuilt remanufactured transmission 64858 mi June 2013 torque converter recall done 88658 mi dealership called Ford recall line, did not fix neutralizing problem with transmission. Ford stated it must be an internal transmission problem not covered by recall. So I called Ford motor company and they will not do anything!!!!!! recall the unsafe bad transmissions made by Ford motor company!!.
While in drive (in a rainy night) vehicle just coasted to a stop. I had no working gears - vehicle acted like being in 'neutral' no matter what was selected. Towed to pundmann Ford and diagnosed as a torque converter problem that also ruined the transmission. Dealer quote "diag removed trans assy replaced torque converter o/d drum forward clutch and o/d band all pistons and seals road test". Several thousand dollars to fix. Found out recall in 2004 and 2005 models for same problem. This is same problem and 2006s should be included. Shocking that a transmission goes completely out at 47,000 miles.
Backdoor won't unlock and now door won't close or lock.
The contact owns a 2005 Ford Freestar. While backing out of a driveway and attempting to pull forward, the cable that holds the spare tire under the vehicle snapped and the tire came off. The contact spoke with the mechanic and was informed to call NHTSA. The purchase date and speed were unknown. The current and failure mileages were 61,000.
Anti slip kicks in & the ground is dry, this has happened 6 times now. The transmission had to be rebuild on a new 2006 Freestar. Now Ford has my van (since sept. 27,06)waiting for the page, so it can be fixed. The anti slip kicks in when it wants to - I almost got killed twice. They are stating it is a senor in the steering column that overheats & causes the anit slip to turn on. I have asked for a new van, but I think they will not. The last incident was 9-27-06.
On April 28th 2006 I was on my way to work, stopped at a red light, proceeded to make a left turn, my van would not move forward of backward. I had to call for a tow to take my van to a dealership. The dealership told me I had to pay $75. 00 in order for them to tell me what was wrong with my van. They diagnosed the problem and told me it was my transmission, that the torque converter had played out. The total charge was $2817. 38 + 75. 00 dollars. I made a call to Ford motor CO. To see if there was a recall on the transmission of the Ford free-star , they told me no.
