On occasion we felt a little surge when backing up. Noticed primarily when backing out of our driver. Foot was not on the accelerator at the time. No accidents occurred. Surge was brief but braking would still stop the vehicle. Also observed a surge when driving at highway speeds. Cruise control was not on. The surge was brief, maybe lasting 1-2 secs. In addition we've experienced a loss of acceleration, sluggishness. The throttle control has been replaced.
My 2005 Ford Freestyle has been having issues with it lunging forward or backward when I am either stopped or driving at a slow speed. It seems to happen mainly when it a hot day and the air condition is on, but it has also occured when the air condition is off. There are times when I am backing out of a parking space and I loose power and the car says fail safe engine mode. Now I have a check engine light on the dashboard that will not go away. This has occurred several times off and on for the last two years with the fail safe engine mode. This is just the latest occurence. It seems to be getting worse.
As I put my car into reverse it lunged without having my foot on the gas. I put the car into drive and it lunged forward in the same manor. All of the service lights lit up on the dash and a message about emergency engine flashed and then the car shut off. This happened one other time. If someone would have been in front or behind my vehicle it would have hit them. Now my check charging system light is flashing on and off. . . But they have checked it and all parts seem to be in working order. I have had multiple things go wrong with this car and am getting worried that it is just going to totally stop working.
I own a 2005 Ford Freestyle which lurches backward when you have the a/c on and you back up. It also started doing the same in foward. Ford should act upon this before there is a death.
Vehicle lurches forward/backward at low speeds and at stop lights which could cause an accident if a person was not paying attention. Engine rpms increase accordingly even though foot is not on the accelerator. This occurs more frequently when ac is on. However, same issue occurs without ac on as well. While in park, the engine will rev up and down and sometimes quite all together and has progressively gotten worse over the last 6,000 miles.
Pulling into a parking spot the vehicle will surge and the brakes have to be pressed really quick so u don't hit the vehicle in front of u. It seems to happen more frequently when the air is running. It will also do this when u are backing up and going at a slow rate of speed.
Vehicle appears normal first 10 minutes or so of driving, then traction control light and awd malfunction appear. Ford diagnosed p1889 error code. Noticed all Ford recommendations for repair didn't resolve others' similar issues and that there is frequent reporting over this issue and Ford doesn't know what to do. Discovered this Freestyle has a Volvo rear and that haldex oil may need changing though they don't provide that recommendation in their maintenance manuals so it leads to these issues. When driving in snow, sometimes awd, then error code appears and driving becomes extremely unsafe as it shifts into 2wd. Ford has changed my sensor and it still occurs. I plan to take further action to get this resolved and to make sure we are not taken advantage of. Ford should be accountable.
After having the car seviced for stalling , and having the throtle cleaned, the car again would not start. . This time it had drained the brand new battery as well.
While driving on the highway with my wife at a speed of 55mph the motor suddenly dies and the wrench symbol appears. I tried to restart the car by turning the key - didn't work. Luckily we were close to an exit and I let the car roll out and onto a parking lot. There I tried again to start the car and it suddenly started again and the wrench symbol is gone. I went to a mechanic to have it checked out but he couldn't find anything. And the car runs fine w/o incident since then. I am just glad that my 3 kids weren't with us in the car that day and that nothing serious happened. A motor dying on a highway can cause serious trouble ! shortly after I bought the car about 2 months ago the cel went on and the error codes for torque/throttle body were given. I went to valvoline to have the fuel system cleaned and the codes taken out, no problems since then. But I've noticed that the car is very sluggish when I accelerate and then suddenly lunges. Needless to say that I think this car is not the best model Ford developed, we did some research on this model and there are so many complaints. Ford needs to do some serious customer care !!! and of course I find my car highly unreliable and expect it to break down any day.
My vehicle has a failed throttle body as evidenced by two codes: t2106 and p061b (reported to me by my mechanic). It lunges or surges when trying to accelerate normally. It goes into "engine fail safe mode" repeatedly and randomly. It has "rough starts" from time to time that have not been found to have another cause. Now, the check engine light is on and stays on, and it will not go into engine fail safe mode, which actually scares me. It scares me because, as I understand it, engine fail safe mode is a protective mode for a failed throttle body. When my mechanic ran the diagnostics on the check engine light, he got the two codes listed above, which he said indicate a failed throttle body. He said this could be dangerous. He said that from his research, this is a wide-spread problem, and Ford should have issued a recall on this by now. I have contacted Ford, and they are refusing to assist with this. My real dilemma is that even if I pay for the replacement, if Ford has not reengineered the part, I will be putting in another defective Ford part. This is what is happening to many Ford owners. They are experiencing multiple failed throttle bodies. I feel trapped in this situation with no good solution other than to pray for safety and hope for Ford to do the right thing and reengineer this part, recall it, and replace it. Throttle body failure (see pe-11018). First incident vehicle would not start. Would turn over but not start. Then had incidences of lurching forward and also in reversed. Second failure was same as first. After third failure, contacted local mechanic who in turn contacted local dealership who advised of problems with the throttle body. Stated that, according to a service bulletin, the part could be reprogrammed but they had not had any success with this and were at that time installing the part on a customers vehicle due to unsuccessful reprogramming. Part replaced on my vehicle at a cost of $546. 56.

First I would like to say is, my Ford Freestyle vehicle is the worse vehicle I have owned!!!!! not is it the worse vehicle this vehicle is very expensive to have repaired. Please if you are thinking about buying a Ford Freestyle vehicle please think twicce. Just last week this vehicle has been losing it speed and on top of that this vehicle accelerates all by it self. The vehicle speeds up then idel down. I don't know what is wrong.
Vehicle has severe lunging when at idle. It doesn't matter if you are in reverse or in drive the vehicle lunges severely and unexpectedly and brake must be applied very heavily to stop it. I have tried turning off he ac, however, I have found little to no relief when I do this. There have been several near misses when sitting at a stop light or when attempting to park, including almost hitting a pedestrian in a parking lot. I have contacted my Ford dealership about this several times and am told there is no evidence as to what the problem is and that Ford has no solution at this time.
On the date noted, I was stopped at a traffic light with my foot on the brake when the car suddenly lurched forward (maybe 6-9 inches). I turned the corner to enter a parking garage and while stopped with my foot on the brake, the car lurched forward again, this time the car stalled. I restarted it pulled forward to the garage gate and stopped. It lurched a third time, stalling again and then the service engine light came on. I can best describe it as though I released the clutch (on a manual shift car) with my foot on the brake and not the accelerator. In such a situation, the car will lurch and stall. However this is an automatic and the reason the clutch would engage is from acceleration. I recall the motor revving up prior to the lurch which would explain the event. The Ford dealership finally narrowed the problem to the throttle body and the electronics attached to it and required replacement ($700+). I would say this event occurred at least 6 times in the past year, always while the car was stopped but never 3 times in succession. It stalled maybe two of those times, entered 'engine failsafe mode' but was fine after re-starting the engine. I researched this occurrence on the internet finding it to be an issue on many occasions with this model vehicle. There are several reports on your website as well. I see the investigation is still open. I noted one report referencing a design flaw as to the release of gases in the throttle body and how they are re-routed back throught the body. The service rep at the dealer noted to me that the new body installed on my car was a new design where the gases are released away from the body. I take this as acknowledgement that the original design was flawed, leading to its unsafe behavior. Note that this last event occurred in 90+ degree weather with the ac on and after highway driving for 3 hours.
My car lunges forward when stopped at a light (brake is applied) or driving slow in the parking lot. It happens unexpectedly and lunges forward as if the accelator is being pushed quickly, even though my foot is on the brake to either be stopped or to slow down in a parking lot. I typically press the brake very hard to try to get control of the car to avoid hitting anything in front of me. It does concern me that I if it occurs, that I could hit the car in front of me at a light or possible a person walking through a parking lot. When driving home the other day (45 - 50 mph), my check charging system light also came on. I took it to the Ford dealer. I explained to them the problem I had with the car lunging and the charging system light coming on. They checked it out and told me the car needed a new alternator and that this would fix the lunging issue and the charging system light issue. They put the new alternator in (which was not cheap) and I noticed on the way home that the car was still lunging. I was driving the following Sunday morning and noticed the car continued to lunge when stoppled at a light. Also, when I stopped at my mailbox the engine shut off and the charging system, engine oil, and emission control lights are coming on. Needless to say the car is going back to the Ford dealership Monday morning.
My Ford Freestyle, lunges all the time. It makes it very difficult to parallel park. I have not had an accident, but I have been very close to hitting other parked cars. I lunges when my foot is on the brake if it's in reverse it lunges backwards. If it's in drive it lunges forward. This has been happening for a long time, my car is a 2005. It's been happening for at least the last 2 years.
When you put the car into reverse or drive and sometimes when sitting at a light the car will lurch several feet with out putting my foot on the acelerator.
Update on odi10419757: took car to Ford dealer because engine light came on after car lunged (while backing up). Said it was the throttle control actuator stivkin g was replaced at a cost of $895. 00. Two other customers with Ford Freestyle have had the same problem.

My 2005 Ford Freestyle has developed a significant surge when maneuvering at low speeds like in a parking lot or driveway. If the driver is not very quick to respond to this surge the driver would easily lose control. Since, parking lots and driveways often have people (especially children) around it is a very bad situation not to have total control of a car. It seems to occur when the a/c is running and the car is at normal or high operating temperatures (not when the engine is cold). I searched the internet related to this issue and it seems there are many who are experiencing this condition and there does not seem to be a straight forward answer as to the cause. I would not normally write a complaint but when I saw that the NHTSA is investigating this issue, I called a local dealership to see if Ford had any notices or bulletins that might identify the cause. I described the condition and explained that NHTSA was investigating this issue but was told that they had never heard of it. I then asked if they could search for notices or bulletins and get back to me, I was told that they would not do that unless I first brought the car in to their service center. I tried to explain the safety significance of this issue and that since he had never heard of this problem that it would make more sense to search for any information Ford had on the issue before I brought it in and charged for service that may not be of any help. The service rep then said he would not help me and then basically hung up on me. The answer to this issue may be something very simple (like cleaning the throttle body) but the vehicle's computer controlled response is very real and very dangerous and Ford should be working much harder to resolve this.
I have a 2005 Ford Freestyle for 1yr 1/2 now it has 45,000 miles on it, I almost twice lost my family and my life but thank god and the quick reflex of my husband we are alive, all due to the throttle, I cant describe it how I wish well I would need a whole page to explain we have taken very good care of it we are right now without a vehicle it cost too much and we have no warranty, so we will have to manage for now until we can, although my husband is in the military we are not rich and I work 6 days a week and have 3 children students whom all have after school sports activities, I am in total shock I really thought we had it made with this car its comfortable 3rd row but now after reading all the reviews we are so horribly upset and feel so taken of ***, this probably has no affect on whose responsability this problem falls on well im sure they have a superb car, but for the american families trying to make it, it is a shame that Ford knowing about this hasnt taken no action, but to each his own and although it seems minor to the high power corporates like Ford whoever needs to own up to this problem and hasnt and just seems to pass the hot potato to others they too will have their judgemet day, and yes I might sound drastic to you it is a very serious matter to us the people who trusted in purchasing a Ford, thank you.
Vehicle is surging at low speeds. Parking lot speeds. Must apply brakes to stop motion. Several feet covered before able to apply brakes. Happened in excess of 10 times. Car is at dealer now and they have witnessed to surging. Car has been taken to Ford service now and they have had it for 24 hours. They are stating they do not know the cause.

My 2005 Ford Freestyle crossover frequently lunges at low speeds and when the driver is not pressing the accelerator pedal. This problem seems to be occuring more often and with more power and is getting harder to stop. Today it almost jumped over a parking lot curb at a retail store parking lot. It happens unexpectantly in forward and reverse and seams to be worse when the a/c is on. In fact, our a/c was not working properly and the problem was not near as bad. However, when the a/c was repaired (the expansion valves were replaced) the problem returned to its previous "strength" or stronger and more often.

Random lunging when, generally, car is placed in reverse. It does it randomly, increasing in frequency. However, today, we got a warning light and the vehicle went into "engine failsafe mode" and was jerking and just not driving appropriately. We went to Ford, and were told to turn the car off and back on to reset that particular sensor, but that generally these problems can be attributed to a throttle body issue - and that said issues may continue or worsen until replacement of this part.
About a month ago, I received error messages on my dashboard ranging from check engine light to critical engine failure. I took my car to the local dealership and he said there were all sorts of error codes that needed to be cleared out. He said this was common and happens every 3 to 4 years. I paid the money, had the error messages / computer chip reset, and went on my way. During the last couple of weeks, my car will surge while I'm temporarily stopped (at a stop light, drive through window, etc), and the engine dies about 50% of the time. The car will lunge 3 to 5 feet as soon as I take my foot off of the break and before I can touch the gas pedal. It is extremely unnerving, it has been very hot in arkansas during the last few weeks (temps in the high 90s / low 100s) and my air conditioner is on while this happens. It appears from similar comments posted, I have a throttle body that is failing.
Bought a Ford Freestyle in July 2008 took it to the shop July 2009 because it was lunging and stalling. Ford kept it on thier lot until November. When I got it back I had to replace the tire because they had flat spts they did not move the car. They replaced the throttle body and now July of 2011 it is doing the same problem. I was told that this car engine gets to hot and the altanater can't work correctly. My warranty expired July 27th 2011 and I can't afford to fix this car. Somrthing needs to be done about all the problems this car has.
With the car in drive and my foot on the brake pedal, the car unexpectedly "surged" forward. I was able to control the car from hitting anyone/anything by applying the brake more forcefully, but this incident has occurred on repeated occasions now both in "drive" (when the car surges forward) and in "reverse" (when the car surges backwards). It seems particularly pronounced during hot days when the ac is running full blast. In each incident, I was traveling 5 mph or less, and had my foot on the brake, either preparing to park or pulling out of a parking spot. So far it has not caused an accident, but there is clearly something wrong with the speed control or the transmission. I have noticed numerous other complaints of a similar nature made online by other owners of 2005 and 2006 Ford Freestyles. There clearly seems to be a problem with the vehicle of this year, make and model and I am hoping Ford will take responsibility and issue a recall in order to prevent future potential injury or death.
My 2005 Ford Freestyle has been surging forwards while at redlights, stop signs or any other time it is idling with the ac on. The rotters and brakes have also been replaced several times. Is there any known reason for this? or any thing that can be done about? its pretty scary especially when another vehicle is in front of me.
I own a 2005 Ford Freestyle. It has started jumping and accelerating on it own. After is does this the car goes into engine failure mode or cuts off. It has done this several times. I don't feel comfortable going through a drive through because the car will start jumping. I started looking online about this problem and saw this is a wide spread problem and Ford needs to fix this.
When turning my car on and switching from different gears, the rpms jumo up and down and cause the car to lunge even while holding down the brake pedal. The problem was the worst today since it started several months ago and my throttle control/transmission light came on. What do I do next? I need to get the vehicle fixed. When go to back it lundges back and if you are sitting in traffic it will lundge forward and then stall out are die the rpms go up real high.

Why isn't this part recalled? because no serious injuries or deaths have yet occurred?.
2005 Ford Freestyle - when first putting my car into gear, either forward or reverse, the car lunges or "revs" up as if it is going to take off. Placing my foot on the brake or having the air conditioner off or on low seems to help somewhat. In at least one incident, the car has gone into an "engine safe mode" and has stopped completely. Luckily, I was in a not so crowded parking lot at the time. We recently had to have the air conditioner replaced in its entirety which has made the problem worse and more frequent.

My 2005 limited edition Freestyle has a few issues that I am very concerned about. My throttle is having major issues. The car will surge forward with no warning when I am at a complete stop. It also has caused it to have a lot of difficultly accelerating when in motion and starting the ignition. I'm afraid that it will surge forward and cause me to hit something or someone. I've read online about people that have had this issue where it gets so bad that they've even lost all acceleration while driving down the highway and one person who hit something in his garage sending it flying through the garage wall. My husband has tried cleaning out the throttle with no success. We bought the car used less than a year ago with no warranty and this problem has been getting progressively worse over the last few months . We are also having a problem with water in the car. We've had puddles on the back passenger floor and front driver side. I do not have a moon/sunroof. Water has actually pooled out from the car onto the ground when I've opened the door. The doors will be dry and we can't figure out how the water is getting in the car. I'm very concerned about mold as both me and my daughter are allergic to it. There is also a whirling noise that happens when you turn the wheel. We noticed this right after buying the car and the dealer looked at it and said there wasn't anything that could be done to fix it that it's just a noise this model car makes. The first 2 issues seem to have affected a very large group of people and I don't know why Ford hasn't recalled the cars as this could lead to severe injury or death.

My 2005 Ford Freestyle has had increasing problems with unexpected lunging. This has occured numerous times when parked or stopped. Usually I can press the brakes and control the movement. Recently, however, I was in a long line of cars leaving a multistoried parking garagae on July 3rd of this year. As we moved down toward the exit, the car became increasingly difficult to manage, lunging repeatedly, and even braking as usual did not stop the lunge. I barely missed the car in front of me, and was grateful that no pedestrians crossed in front of my car.
2005 Ford Freestyle is experiencing sudden acceleration. We first experienced the problem soon after purchase, but the throttle body was cleaned (or so we were told) and the problem went away until recently. Now it does it frequently and with a new driver in the family we are fearful about the safety of the car. The driver of this car must be very aware of its tending to accelerate / surge. The car has twice shut down in safe engine mode when it surged while backing out of a parking space.

Since July, my car has been lunging both forward and in reverse when my foot is not on the accelerator. I have come close to running into cars, people, and my garage due to these surges. It started off happening from time to time. Now it is daily and sometimes multiple times per day. In addition to the surges, there are times it struggles to accelerate.
I have had my 2005 Ford Freestyle lung while in either drive or reverse. Luckily nothing has been damaged and no one has been injured. I have noticed that it usually only happens while the air conditioning is on. Also I have been having issues trying to get my vehicle out of park. I am having problems with the gear shift. It doesn't seem to matter if I have just started my vehicle or have been sitting in a drive through. Please advise as to what I need to do to get this resolved.

1. The air conditioner failed, had to be replaced June 2011. It just gradually did not cool the air at all. Fan on ac worked fine, all controls as well, just no cool air. $850. The vehicle lunges forward or backward, more noticeable when starting to back up. Had valves cleaned. Worked temporarily. Looking at major repair bill for throttle body or transmission, don't know which. .
Incident happened while on vacation in another state. Car was idling with air conditioner running for approximately 20 minutes, upon shifting gear into reverse and backing out of a parking space, car surged into reverse without foot accelerating the petal. Driver braked and car stalled. Car restarted in engine failsafe mode. Car repeatedly stalled upon successive restarts each time continuing to display engine failsafe mode. After multiple attempts, car restarted in normal mode with the check engine light remaining on. Car was sluggish, but continued to drive without stalling. Drove car to tropical Ford dealership in orlando the next day. Service advisor recommended multiple items, including replacing throttle body assembly, pcv valve, pcv control valve, reprogramming the pcm. Upon advise of service advisor that it was a dangerous situation that "car could surge and stall while traveling at high speeds on the interstate" on the long drive home, we authorized tropical Ford to replace the throttle body assembly ( replaced with fp # 6f9z-9e926-a) and reprogram the pcm.
Car lunges up to ten feet when my foot in not on the accelerator. My mechanic says it's the throttle body causing the problem. This has happened numerous times and has caused me to almost have accidents. There are currently no recalls, however, according to your website over 238 compliants have been filed. When can this be listed as a recall and have the car fixed by Ford! this is a very dangerous situation. My wife was pulling into a parking space with her foot lightly on the brake pedal. The car lunged forward, causing her to press hard on the brakes. The car did stop, but it almost hit the car in the next parking space. This is the second time this car has displayed this problem. Our daughter was driving it a month or so ago, and it did the same thing.
While attempting to parallel park, my 2005 Ford Freestyle, accelerated on its own and almost caused me to collide with the car behind me. I have had over 10 incidents where my car has accelerated on its own. Today when it happened the car ended up stalling and the check engine light came on. This has become a safety issue and seems to be happening more frequently. I will contact my local Ford dealer to see what what steps Ford is taking to resolve this issue.
While driving the vehicle it goes into fail safe mode kinda like stalling it does this up to 4 or 5 times with only going a few miles and doesn't matter if it is in town or highway it does it everywhere. We have to pull over shut the car off and restart it.
2005 Ford Freestyle-drove into parking lot to pickup friends waiting. Put car in drive and car lunged forward with my foot on brake jumping several feet forward then engine stalled. Restarted while in middle of parking lot to oncoming traffic, and repeated above stalled and lunged, again and again after 5th time wrench light showed on dash display -started car and was able to do a tight u and repark vehicle. Wrench light remained on. Left car in lot after returned from dinner 2 hours later the wrench light was out and vehicle was taken home and appointment made at local mechanicl. Mechanic called with info that we needed to take to Ford repair with code #'s p061b & p2106. Ford presently is looking at vehicle and was told they reset the computer and we needed a tune up and as of this moment, they are having difficulty getting things back to us. Vehicle is a 2005 Ford Freestyle with 65,000 miles on it. This is a very scary dangerous thing that happen. Fortunately no cars in the lot were hit as the car lunged approximently 8-10 feet and I wasnt driving down the road. After looking on line last night I see the NHTSA is investigating after approximate 500 reports of varying years of this vehicle reported these same details. After reading them, I see my situation fits this to a tee! some have replaced the throttle body for a cost of $1000 only to have it happen again after this repair. Several months ago we thought we may have gotten bad gasoline as the car was acting as though it was surging back and forth and would stall after starting and running rough for a few minutes. Put additive in the gas tank. I think Ford needs to investigate this is very dangerous, I no longer trust that I will be safe driving my car and I would not want any of my loved ones driving this vehicle and having this happen as they were in traffic, surely would be an accident and hopefully no ones lives will be taken because of this issue. I love my Ford Freestyle and never had complaint til now.

2005 Ford Freestyle lunges forward when a/c is on in hot weather at idle speed. Problem has occurred on a regular basis(20-30 times) each summer for the last 4-5 years. We have had it in the dealer several times and made many, many phone calls. One repair in the beginning was the thottle body. It had got to the point where the dealer notified us they could not diagnose the problem unless the message system stayed on which it never did. After each incident the message center would display "failsafe mode" but would not return after thr engine was restarted. Very unsafe-my wife almost ran over children in the pick up line at school. I am concerned the car may lunge into fast moving traffic. I notified the dealer 5-3-11 to ask them about your investigation and whether something can now be done. The service advisor told me there was no record of a possible recall or investigation.
Car lunges forward at certain times. Most noteably while air conditioner is running and pulling into a parking place. Sometimes lunges while pulling out of parking; so while in reverse. Seems to have something to do with tight turning of the steering wheel. Mention has been made of a possible throttle body sensor problem. When taken to the mechanic however; it would not lunge, so no repairs were made. Only does it on certain occassions.
When stopping, parking, or backing up, the vehicle occasionally accelerates unexpectedly. In the last 6 months, it has happened a minimum of 10 times. I have not taken the vehicle to the dealership to have the problem diagnosed, as I cannot afford the repair costs.
Own a 2005 Ford Freestyle that lunges when the air conditioner is turned on. I've had this problem for several years now with no resolution. It lunges after I've been sitting in idle at a traffic light or if I am backing up. So far I've not had an accident , but just wonder when my luck will run out. When I back out of a parking space, the car lunges backwards without me pressing on the gas. This started about 6 months ago. Originally it was intermittent. Now it happens all of the time. Originally, it only happened when the car was in reverse. Now after I have backed out of my parking space and put the car into drive, the car lunges forward. Now that I know what to expect, I'm very careful because especially in a small parking lot, it would be very easy to hit another car. This is an ongoing incident.
Our 2005 Ford Freestyle accelerates on its own at times after you put it in gear. If you are not prepared by having your foot on the brake it will lurch as the rpms increase on its own without touching the accelerator. This is very dangerous especially if someone is standing behind the vehicle.
First, let me start by saying that I like my Ford Freestyle. It is a comfortable car with a smooth ride. The event occurred one week ago on Sunday may 15th. It was a sunny day, good driving conditions at about 1pm. I was exiting the church parking lot with the radio and air conditioner on. I was in a line of cars waiting to turn onto the main street. The vehicle was in gear in the "d"(drive) position. The car was not moving, and my foot was in mid-air (neither on the accelerator nor on the brake) as I was anticipating the car in front of me to move in a few seconds. Suddenly, the engine revved slightly and the car lunged forward about one foot before I could apply the brake. I was very surprised, as this was the first time it had happened. Fortunately, I had left about 10 feet room between my car and the car in front of me. ( I am absolutely positive that I did not touch the accelerator pedal, nor did the floor mat) ironically, a few days later, I read an article in our newspaper about a current investigation of about 200 Ford Freestyles with similar problems. I am very concerned about this potentially serious safety problem that seems to be affecting the Ford Freestyle. Thank you for investigating this matter.
2005 Ford Freestyle - my car also has the surging problem. It has been occuring for many years and I had taken it to the local dealer several times, to no avail, they couldn't get it to surge. It tends to happen at low speeds, like while at a drive through restaurant, or just starting from a stop, it will surge and jump without any acceleration. The dealer could never get it to happen, so I quit taking it in for further checking. I can't even let my daughter drive the car, as she is a permit driver and I don't feel it safe for her to drive. I hope you find a solution to this problem, it would be much appreciated. This has been occuring for many years, however below on the incident date, I just listed the last date of occurence, I would have to call Ford for the exact dates, but I purchased car in 2006 and it has been happening ever since.
2005 Ford Freestyle lunges forward when stopped. If foot isn't on the break good and firm, the lunge almost rear ends the vehicle in front of you. I have had this vehicle since 2006 and it has done this since day one. Ford garage always says that they cannot find anything wrong.
I have had numerous instances where, when either at a stop light, or parking or waiting in the carpool line my Freestyle has lunged forward while my foot was on the brake pedal. Some instances are worse than others with more force, but I am able to stop the car by pressing harder on the brake pedal. I have almost hit a couple of cars in the drive through lanes at restaurants. I have also experienced my Freestyle cutting off while at a light, and even once when I took my foot off the gas to coast into a parking lot. The car just died. I called the local Ford dealership and they stated that there have been issues with the throttle body sticking and its way of correcting itself is to lunge the car and attempt to right the issue. They quoted anywhere from $100 to try to clean the throttle body and possible have to replace it to the tune of about $700. If this problem is so well known that my dealer knows about it, why has it not been addressed and recalled?.
When putting car into reverse or drive, the car will lung forward and as soon as the breaks are applied the car goes dead and the trouble light comes on. This happens a good deal of the time and is very dangerous and has nearly caused several accidents.
Sudden accelleration- vehicle will lunge forward or backwards when vehicle is stopped or when first put into gear. This happens more frequently when the weather is warm. The vehicle can be stopped with extra brake application. This happens all the time in warm temperatures. I have not had this problem looked at, the vehicle is out of factory warranty and after researching this online it seems like people who have had this repaired continue to have issues.

I was pulling to a stop light with my foot firmly on the brake and the truck continued to accelerate. I had to press the brake almost completely to the floor to keep from jumping into on coming traffic. I heard about the complaints on the news so I decided to file a complaint as well. This is a very dangerous issue because you never know when it will happen again.

When manuevering in parking lots the vehicle has lunged forward when trying to park the vehicle. After it lunges forward it stalls and comes up with an error message. It starts back up fine afterwards. Sometimes during regular travel it will speed up unexpectedly.

At the start of the winter here in minnesota, the driver's side door on our 2005 Ford Freestyle would fail to latch intermittently. When this would occur, there was nothing to prevent the door from swinging open while driving. Ford issued a safety recall notice (06s45) in 2006 to "fix" this known defect on the 2005 Ford Freestyle but it is clear that the "fix" is not preventing the problem from reoccurring. It is impossible to predict when the failure to latch will occur and results in a highly dangerous situation which puts the driver and the passengers the vehicle in peril.
All wheel drive malfunction message came up. The message would not clear. Remains on conctantly. Result is front wheel drive only, creates unsafe driving in snow or slick streets. Went to the dealer and he said it was a sensoe and would cost $500. 00 but expect that price to snowball. Price will snowball?? what kind od diagnosis is that. I will try to fix it but it will surely cost you a lot more because we can't pinpoint the exact cause. It could be this, that, that, we don't know. We will do all the work and then tell you what the bill is. It could be $7000. 00. Would you leave your car at this dealership???.
When air temperature is hot the car tends to jump a foot in moving forward from a stopped position or idle position or back a foot if moving backward from a stopped or idle position.

My Ford Freestyle lunged forward in 2010 while I was sitting in traffic at a toll booth on busy rt 128. At the time I was scared to death, and had to aggressively press the break to keep it from hitting the car in front of me. This continued for a few mminutes, and eventually the car went into "limp home mode". When I got to a safe spot, I turned the car off. When I turned the car on again, this lunging did not happen again. At the time it happenedi thought it was the heat, or because I had the air conditioning on, anything to justify what just happened. It was not until ii saw the news this morning 5/16/11 and realized the problem I had last summer was experienced by others.
At slow speeds, at various times, there are unintended surges in speed. They are usually more common when the air conditioning is in use. The may occur when in forward or reverse. My local dealer advised that Ford was looking into the problem, but I have nothing definite about what the problem is and whether or not Ford will pay for any repairs. I have since learned that the problem is quite common and is being investigated. I do not recall filing a formal complaint before.

I was driving and stopped at a red light. I had my foot firmly on the brake. The car suddenly surged forward almost two feet. I pulled into a restaurant and it did the same thing at the drive thru window. It then shut off and when I turned it back on it went into safety mode. Took to Ford dealer and they took some money off for the repair - throttle body, etc. Have also had over 1,000 in brake repairs and now the air conditioner isn't working; looks like the compressor. Why hasn't this car been recalled? this is getting ridiculous.
Rpm surge while parking. When pulling into a parking space with foot on brake, car lunges. When coming to a stop at a traffic light, car has also been known to lunge. Most all incidents occurred while ac was running and wheel was sharply turned.
As I was preparing to turn, the car surged forward continuously. I pressed the brake as hard as possible and the surge continued, which was dangerous, as I almost hit a pedestrian. I put it in park and the surge continued, as it did after I put it back in drive to get the beast into the parking garage. It was determined to be a failed throttle body, which was replaced on July 7, 2010 at a cost of $821. 33 by crown Ford, nashville TN.

I have had my car accerate without my foot being on the pedal. This would usually happen as I would get ready to go into reverse or just putting the car in gear to go forward. I immediately brake hard to stop the problem, which solves the issue. My accelerator has also had problems getting stuck and I have to pull it forward with my foot. This began about a year ago, and happens occasionally.
On March 4th 2010 I was backing out of my sisters driveway when my car surged and caused me to back into her neighbors garage across the alley. Since then I have had numerous close calls from almost hitting pedestrians in cross walks to almost hitting the front of stores, or other vehicles while attempting to pull into or back out of parking spots. The car also surges at stop lights. I have started putting my car in park while idling so that I don't end up in an accident. In may of 2012 I hit a metal fence post while attempting to park my car at the local rodeo. The car is dangerous & I do not allow my daughters, who are both old enough to drive, to drive my vehicle. Ford needs to recall this dangerous malfunction before someone is seriously injured.
Car is accelerating on its own hard on shifting into drive or reverse. Mostly on low pulling out speed when you turn the steering out of a parking spot at every time. Hope the recall comes into effect on these hard time or before someone gets killed. Thank you for your time to look into our safety.

The vehicle lurches after sitting in park. It happens in reverse and drive. The vehicle seems to be okay in the colder months, but when the heat/humidity hit the car begins to lurch uncontrollably. A few times it has gone into fail safe mode and I've had to restart it. This is extremely dangerous in parking lots and around pedestrians.

Ford Freestyle 2005 has been leaking for months. Large puddles have formed on the front and rear passenger side of the car. Most recently, water has leaked from the sunroof onto both the driver and passenger side. I have read extensively on the internet about a basic design flaw in this car that causes water from the drains to empty into the car because the drains are unable to handle the required amount of water. Ford dealerships generally seem to report no knowledge of the problem or do not resolve the problem. Driving with water dripping on my head is a safety hazard. Also, my child has been sick with respiratory problems for almost a month now. I had not pinpointed the source of his problem, but having read numerous posts about mold growth due to the water infiltration I am wondering if that could be the problem. Water causes mold, rust, and can short out electrical systems in the car. While Ford doesn't apparently see this as a hazard or a result of their bad design, many consumers do.
My vehicle will jump ahead at different times. Most of the time it is when you put the car in gear. It lunges very quickly so you have to be aware if it at all times. The first time it happened it took me by surprised it jumped ahead so quickly. I have noticed lately when the air conditionaing is in use it will jump/lunge ahead numerous times.
I purchased my 2005 Ford Freestyle new in January 2006. After two years I started to experience various unintended accelerations. I took the vehicle to a Ford authorized dealership and had it checked out. Their work order indicated they had performed an "eec test code p2106 (throttle position sensor), it also indicated a pin point test qe1, qe9, and they proceeded to replace the throttle body". The problem went away for some time and after a few months the vehicle started to do the same thing again (accelaration). The problem really gets worse with the a/c on and while I try to manuever into parking spaces or while I'm at a full stop waiting to turn. I have since used less my vehicle. This issue causes a great burden on me and my family since this is our daily driver and we are trying to avoid any mishaps that could involve an accident with another vehicle or person.
No one was injured, the 2005 Ford Freestyle had to have a battery replaced and upon replacement the car started but the instrument cluster no longer functions,. The dealership (b. J. Ford, liberty, texas) said the cluster would need to be replaced at a cost of $440. 00. I have researched several websites and this seems to be a defect. Your agencies own nhsta action number: pe07058 addressed this issue. I feel Ford should take responsibility for this issue. It is expensive to replace and it seems to be a prevalent issue with the 2005-06 Freestyle models.
Sudden acceleration from idle. Car would suddenly jump forward or reverse at idle especially when shifting from park. Dealer taped some wiring for temporary fix warranty coverage during. Problem reoccurred after warranty coverage expired and dealer and would not address the issue. Vehicle now has 100k+ miles and the problem has gotten progressively worse. I have learned to keep my foot on the brake.
I have already replaced the throttle body in this vehicle around 2008. I can check with my mechanic for an exact date. It was surging into traffic, light poles in parking lots, and even pedestrians, all while my foot was on the brake. I now have the same issue with the throttle body failing again. This kind of car is going to injure or kill someone. I do not have another 800 dollars that the dealership charges to correct this problem. With no warning this car lunges forward with no regard to what or who is in front of it. Please look into this further. I am fully aware that there are many others who also own this same type of car who have the same exact problem. My 2005 Ford Freestyle lunges forward or backward before I give it gas. I notice it most when getting ready to back out of the driveway or when getting ready to back out of parking spaces or preparing to pull forward after backing out of a parking space. It seems to happen as I remove my foot from the brake pedal. I began noticing the problem approximately three years ago,and it probably only happened half a dozen times in that year. Since then it has become more frequent to the point that now almost every time I get in the car it happens. So far applying the brakes has stopped the sudden acceleration, and I have had no accidents however, the problem seems to be getting worse and I am quite concerned about it.
Unintended acceleration - happened infrequently early in vehicles life at lower mileage. Now unintended acceleration happens much more frequently and regularly. It only happens at low speed, idle rpm and during parking maneuvers. Unintended acceleration/surge is most common after a cold start and with steering input. This behavior requires that I maintain active pressure on the brake to maintain control over the vehicle. However, I am concerned that, with the issue becoming worse with age, I may lose control over the vehicle and cause property damage or injure an innocent bystander. Current mileage is 95000 and issue has become markedly worse since 75000.
Throttle body is giving me trouble. When I am at a light or stopped my car accelerates by itself. Is a safety issue as sometimes I am at a pedestrian crosswalk or just at a light. Very concerned about this issue.
Chronic problem, increasing frequency, cant remember when it all started was infrequent 1-2x/year and usually on hot days, maybe when it was 1 year old. Has gradually increased in frequency happening now in spurts with no rhyme nor reason. When accelerating from a stop, or drive from reverse car will choke and stall. Seems to be worse in hot weather, but has also occurred in very cold. Check engine lights up in limp home mode but then corrects when shut engine off for awhile, but the light does not come on every time nothing shows on computer when check engine light is on either. No codes show, mechanic is certified and a family friend, he kept the car; it acted up only once and his computer said throttle body sensor - it was replaced, but the problem persists. He has done all he can but can't find the problem. In searching the internet I have seen this is a chronic problem with the Freestyle. I wont let my kids drive it for fear their lack of experience and quick thinking at the wheel could get them killed as it has happened pulling out at intersections. I found this site through the edmonds recall information site: please institute an investigation to get a recall on whatever is going on. I love this car, it now has 225000 miles and that is the only problem, I cant afford a replacement, but I cant afford to die either.
Car accelerates when at low idle and the a/c is running. The car will lurch forward. I can stop it with the brakes. Can happen at stop lights, but usually the brake is fully depressed at stop lights. Unfortunately, it happens when backing out of the driveway and switching to drive, it will lurch at that point. It will also happen when parking, either pull-in parking or parallel. Just lucky I've been able to hit the brakes in time.
I purchase my 2005 Ford Freestyle in June 2005. July 2005 traveling to georgia between 55/60 mph, the check engine light and transmission icon appeared. Upon trying to accelerate, I could not move no more than 30-40 mph with the rpm's racing. I had to pull over and let the car rest approximately 15-20 minutes. Upon starting the car and putting into drive gear it was very hard and lunged. The car sounds like you're racing the engine with the vehicle in park. The frequency of the engine/transmission light with trying to accelerate and can not is a persisent issue. It also lunges when the air conditioner is turned on. Once the car is shut off and started again, while your foot is on the brake which has to be with more pressure than usual to control the lunge. Sitting in traffic with the air on with cars ahead of you is frightning since it will lunge then also. This has been an ongoing issue since the purchase of this vehicle. I've also had the brakes repaired more than normal. Since acquiring this car. Recently, I've gotten the brakes done in February, may and currently need another repair with all the squealing.
