The car surges when you put in gear, even with your foot on the brake. It does it in forward and reverse. It is very scary, many times I almost hit something. This past winter I was on the interstate and the car lost power, I could not go over 30 miles per hour.
My foot was on the brake and I had the car in drive. The engine revved and the vehicle lunged. It has done so on multiple occasions since. It usually occurs when the air conditioner is running.
Engine revs with no accelerator pressure when going from park to reverse or drive. It is fortunate that the brake pedal must be depressed to remove the shifter from park so the sudden movement can be somewhat controlled if you are expecting it. If you were in neutral which wouldn't require your foot on the brake, the consequences could be nasty to nearby vehicles or pedestrians. My wife is trying to just drive my work truck as the Freestyle has her very concerned for her and others' safety.
When I put the car in drive it lunges forward and when you put it in reverse it lunges back. If your foot is not on the brake you can hurt someone. Its worse when the air conditioner is on.
Filed to go with campaign id pe11018. 2007 Freestyle attemps to lurch forward or backward when put into gear with foot on brake. Also, when beginning acceleration, vehicle wants to luch forward and/or speed up more quickly than usual. Have hit a curb because of vehicle lurching forward. Also have almost had an accident backing out of driveway due to unexpected acceleration when put into reverse.
When idling/parking the vehicle will surge uncontrollably. Causing near misses of other cars and personnel.
Throttle body system problem. Car lunging at low speeds and when the driver is not pressing the acceleration pedal; sudden and unexpected. More apparent when the vehicle's air conditioning system is on or when the steering wheel is turned sharply. Past loyal Ford customer. This was a brand new purchase. Problem started again after the hydraulic control unit was replaced in 2008. I have had all I can take; visited dealership today (3-02-212)! please Ford correct this for the sake of your customers.
While driving at a slow speed, my Ford Freestyle will lunge forward even while braking. I have jumped curbs because of this issue and feel that this problem should be addressed before it causes someone serious injury.
My car is cutting off when I drive it. It also races when I shift the gears. And when I turn the ac and shift the gears the car accelarates. My car has not been driven since may 2012. I've had it checked out by a car dealership repair shop and they couldn't find out what the problem is.
Car would lunge at any speed, had to immediately press on brake to keep from hitting other cars or jumping forward/backward from parking space. I took it to dealer, they cleaned the throttle body and fixed the motor mount (over $500). In addition, rotors had to be resurfaced at 30k miles and I need to have them replaced at 77k miles.
I was on the freeway driving freeway speed in the middle lane when the engine stopped, I had no power. I was very lucky to be able to get to the freeway shoulder without an incident. After a few minutes, the engine started and back at freeway speed. A few miles later, the same happened. This continued for the next several hundred miles. Start, stop, start stop etc. Cost to replace fuel pump. . . $1000. Nov. 22, 2012 (two months later) @ 48200 miles, again on the freeway, the same happened. One hundred miles and four hours later I got to the repair shop. Another fuel pump, this time it was warranty by planet Ford here in spring, texas. Nov. 2, 2012 at mileage 56023 another fuel pump failure. Ford said only the first pump fell under their warranty policy. I was told by a mechanic at Ford, I should try not to let the fuel tank get less than half full, the fuel in the tank keeps the pump cool. Another mechanic told me that because the drive shaft goes thru the tank, the tank is "split" and can cause the pump to overheat. Can you help? thanks.
Vehicle surges when putting into drive with foot on the brake. Also, surges when braking when coming to a stop. Have not taken the vehicle to a dealership/mechanic yet.
Engine surges at low speed, vehicle lunges. Issue is exacerbated when air conditioner is on.
If you have your a/c on and leave your car idling for just a few minutes then when you put it in reverse or drive, it surges a few feet like 4 to 5 ft unless you really hold the brake down. It really seems to be getting worse as time goes on.
When coming out of park into drive, sudden momentary acceleration before pressing on the accelerator. This seems to be increasing in frequency and now starting to do it in reverse.
At a slow speed in either forward or reverse when I put my foot on the brake the engine speeds up and the car lunges forward or backwards and I have to hit the brake hard to stop it. This has happened several times and seems to be happening more often now. A couple of times the engine seeded up while the car was in park I see where Ford brushes the problem off as being minor. I think this is a dangerous thing and should be corrected. If it happens while you are parallel parking it can cause an accident . Also when backing out of a parking space you could get into an accident. With over 200 complaints I think something should be done before someone is seriously injured from this defect by Ford.
Several times my vehicle surges forward when moving at slow speeds or braking. This has happened while driving forward and reverse. More noticeable when the a/c is on. Even when my foot is on the brake . I can hear the engine revving when this is happening - even though my foot is on the brake. It also loses power on the freeway and becomes very sluggish in acceleration. The vehicle would lose power unexpectedly when driving 10 mph and up. Also I had a minor accident, the vehicle accelerated by itself and I hit a wall in my garage. Also, it would not go forward and when put in reverse it would accelerate--this happened in the middle of traffic during rush hour. We finally took it to the dealer to have it looked at, they told us it was the throttle body and our master tech guarantee did not cover the expense. All they did was clean the throttle up (is expected to have more problems later) because the cost was over $700 and we cannot afford it at the time. So, after we took it out of the shop the car is now only accelerating to no more than 4000 rpms.
I have also experienced unexpected vehicle movement when my foot was not on the accelerator. My vehicle has moved as much as 1-2 feet when the brake was not applied or lightly applied. I describe the movement as a "lunge". Also, as others have reported,, the lunging has occured when my foot was not on the accelerator and was either firmly on the brake pedal or lightly on the brake pedal. I have only noticed this condition while in "drive". Lunges have been sudden and unexpected, and generally are of brief duration. The condition seems worse with the air-conditioning in operation and/or when the steering wheel is turned.
The car leaped forward unexpectedly while pulling up to a stop sign. This happened on 7/02/2011 for the first time. We had this occur several more times in the next few days, always while stopping or parking the car. In one instance the car would of struck a light pole, had there not been a curb there. This seems to occur whether the car is cold or has run for awhile. We are now having to drive this car like it may leap forward at anytime. Ford needs to get this taken care of before some is seriously injured.
While holding brake and shifting to drive or reverse the rpm's increase causes the vehicle to lunge, almost hit a man in a parking lot, have came close to car's on different occasions. Was happening occasionally but now it's every time you drive the vehicle. Also the vehicle loses power during acceleration, then the wrench light comes on. You have to stop and turn the engine off. Then restart engine.
My 2007 Ford Freestyle has been lunging forward or backward when idling or at very low speeds, both in drive and reverse. For example, when pulling the car in or out of a parking space or when slowing at an intersection. It will lunge several feet sometimes, and I have nearly hit parked cars and once nearly hit a pedestrian. I have to slam on the brake to stop the car from hitting things! I have done some research and there are so many people experiencing this same exact problem with this vehicle. It is a safety hazard! this needs to be recalled and fixed by Ford, before many people get injured!.
Several times my vehicle surges forward when moving at slow speeds or braking. This has happened while driving forward and reverse. More noticeable when the a/c is on. Even when my foot is on the brake - the car accelerates on it's own and lunges forward. I can hear the engine revving when this is happening - even though my foot is on the brake.
After I bought my Freestyle, I started having serious surging issues, especially after idling for a time or when trying to park the vehicle. Sometimes it would occur during rush hour traffic, endangering my life and the lives of other motorists. I took the car to the dealership. The tech's suggested replacing various components of the car a/c system and other related components. No successful resolution was ever reached with the dealership, even after the suggested repairs were made. I continued to have surging issues, making the car unsafe. In January 2013, I took the car to a reputable mechanic who diagnosed the car with transmission failure, specifically the input shaft. I believe that the surging issue related to the subsequent transmission failure. Not only is my car unsafe to drive due to the surging issue, but now is completely undriveable due to the transmission failure. I was made aware in January 2013 that Ford issued a TSB in December 2012 relating to the surging issue and recommended a fix that would completely resolve the issue. But I believe this TSB came way too late. The surging damaged the transmission and thus created a problem within the transmission that wasn't there before. Ford took steps to solve a problem that made their cars unsafe. Now they need to come forward and further address the issue that the surging not only made the car unsafe, but damaged the car and then submit measures to resolve the issues of damaged transmissions.
Vehicle surges suddenly at idle speeds in parking lots. This seems to happen more in hot weather. It also loses power on the freeway and becomes very sluggish in acceleration. This is a dangerous situatioas the surges will casue the vehicle to jump forward or backward suddenly with pedestrians around.
Vehicle suddenly surges from stopped position without the accelerator being depressed, occurs in forward and reverse without warning, problem is intermittent.
Just above idle the car lunges forward whether we are moving forward or in reverse.
Whenever I put it in forward or reverse there's a surge or in reverse its does a jerk. When I go in reverse I cant use the air conditioner. It cuts the car off and then the wrench comes up when I restart the car.
The car lunges or surges at low speed. The rpm go up 1000 rpm on its own. This only happens in parking lots at very low speeds so my foot is always on the brake but this cold be a very serious defect causing potential injury to others.
While at a signal completely stopped, the vehicle motor revved and excelled acted forward. This caused the engine to die and all dash lights came on. The engine light stayed on after restarting. This has happened several time almost causing several accidents. We have had our transmission replaced because of it. The amount of times it happened and torque it produced caused damage in transmission. We have had several mechanics refuse to work on this issue because they say this model is know to do this and no one knows how to fix it. I am out $7000 and a unreliable car that is unsafe to put my wife and kids in. Ford has said they would look at it and would cost me another $5000, and we're not sure if they themselves could fix it. They are not sure what the issue is, but would be willing to research if I pay for it.
While at rest, car suddenly surges forward. Then, while reversing my car started surging making it darn near impossible to drive as well as park. In 2011, spent 7000$ on a new transmission for a four yr old vehicle with 75,000 miles!!!! ridiculous. Now, the car surges in both directions and timing is off. Ford issued a one time throttle cleaning. What a joke! thanks Ford! $150$ service that fixes nothing and 20,000 people online that are out 5000-7000$ for transmissions get what?.
The transmission causes performance issues. The transmission jerks, rattles, doesn't pull, causes the engine to stop while traveling or parked in traffic. Causes sudden jerking while driving, backing up and starting off. It also jerks violently when the vehicle is put in drive or reverse even before starting to drive. While driving the transmissions causes the vehicle to be slow to change speed. This is a serious safety hazard cause while driving the vehicle jerks so violently that it risk hitting another vehicle or pedestrian.
Car lunges at stops and low speeds.
When I come to a stop prior to pulling in the last few feet of a parking spot, my car will lunge forward (rev) with my foot not touching the gas pedal. I can stop the car with the brake. It seems to only happen when the air conditioning and/or defrost are on.
The contact owns a 2007 Ford Freestyle. The contact stated that a check charging system light illuminated on the instrument panel. Also, when she shifted into gear, the vehicle would jolt forward or backward. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the electrical throttle box and motor mount were replaced. The manufacturer had not been notified. The current mileage was approximately 47,000. The failure mileage was approximately 46,000.
When stopped vehicle will lung forward, idle will go up & down causing this to lung, idle speed will vary from about 600 rpm to 1300 rpm this makes it hard to park and when on the road stopped, took to dealer for repair in Aug of 2010 repair (changed throttle body) that lasted for about 6 months and started again.
