36 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/09/2021

1) brake hydraulic control unit (hcu) failure. Dealership removed and replaced hcu assembly and abs module. All parts retained by dealer. 2) hcu brake failure made stopping very difficult and slow to stop. Dealer recommended not driving until repaired. 3) dealer confirmed hcu failure with computer code analysis. 4) hcu and effected parts not inspected by anyone other than dealer. 4) numerous red abs and brake warning lights upon backing out of garage to street. I shut the engine off and restart in the hope of correction, to no avail. Problem re-occurred. Vehicle could be stopped but with difficulty -- slow to stop and hard to stop. Dealer replaced hcu assembly and abs module and added pm1c brake fluid (dot3), this hcu failure apparently has been a problem in Ford Fusion and other Ford vehicles (see safety recall 19s54 -anti-lock brake system hydraulic control unit valve function -- 2006-2010 Ford & Lincoln Mercury). It doesn't look like the problem has been resolved. Note that brake fluid used is dot 3 and not the ntsb recommended remedy dot 4 brake fluid.

37 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/16/2021

While driving my 2012 Ford Fusion like any other day… as approaching a 4-way intersection my traffic light was changing to red. When I went to stop using my brakes, my car would not stop at all and went completely through the intersection, and oncoming cars at each directions we’re coming towards me and my children. The brakes were as if they were not there and went completely to the floor and would not or did not stop my car at all. After several times pumping the brakes and strongly engaging in pulling the emergency brake numerous times I finally got my car to somewhat stop. This was the scariest thing I have ever experienced. Most definitely the most dangerous thing I have ever experienced my entire life for myself and my young children. We are truly lucky to be alive from these brakes completely, and unexpectedly spur of the moment going out! no warning!!! models 2006-2010 Ford Fusions have a recall on this same exact brake system and have the same exact problem with the braking system unexpectedly and dangerously going out!!! please get the recall extended on past 2010 and include 2011 and 2012 Ford Fusions!!! as they have the same exact braking systems!!!.

38 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2021

Brake pedal became soft and the braking distance was increased after abs activation on snow/ice. I tapped the brakes to check how slick the road surface was, this activated the abs. I then traveled 30 feet and applied the brakes to make a right hand turn, the brakes went nearly to the floor causing me to take the turn at a higher than safe speed.

39 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/02/2020

The contact owns a 2012 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, traction control, brakes ,and power steering became inoperable. The vehicle was restarted and worked as designed. While driving approximately 30-40 mph, the brake warning light was illuminated. Additionally, the brake pedal was depressed on the floor board. The driver pumped the brakes several times before it began to work. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who informed him the failure was not covered under the warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted who referred him to NHTSA the failure mileage was approximately 180,000. The contact stated the failure was related to NHTSA campaign number: 15v340000 (steering).

40 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/09/2020

All thsymptoms that occur as described in your campaign involving Ford recall no. 19s54 and specifically ea18-002. The brake pedal has excessive travel before engaging the brakes. This significantly increases braking time. I have had several near misses, almost resulting in accidents.

41 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2020

The rear brake calibers have seized up twice now. 1st time was June 2017, serviced by firestone, and just recently sept 12th 2020. Both times required a full brake repair. First happened at 72,000 miles and now at 142,000 miles. Both cause a loss of braking in the vehicle. In June of 2017 the vehicle was moving between 30 to 45 mph when it seized up. We drove it to nearest shop in illinois so we can start our drive back to georgia. Second time was not as bad as I recognized the symptoms and got it in for repairs before full seizure of the brakes. Online review shows many problems with the brakes on this car model.

42 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/29/2020

Power steering light came on. Steering wheel wouldn't turn easily.

43 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2020

Car was idling in line at a drive thru for about 5 minutes. Driver released floor brake to move up in line. After pulling up a few feet, and then trying to slow the car, the brake pedal traveled all the way to the floor and braking distance was extended. Driver was afraid the car wouldn't stop. Car has a new electronic throttle body and hydraulic abs pump, but problem persists. Driver is considering getting a new car.

44 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2020

Brake pedal drops almost to floor at times greatly increasing stopping distance when approaching a stop or when I slow down. This necessitates the need to pump the brake pedal and in extreme circumstances needing to swerve to avoid a collision . This problem occurs with no warning at all. This seems to be a known issue with the Fusion.

45 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/24/2020

After going to several service places with my brakes they are yet giving issues having to pump them to stop. Power steering system assist shut down while driving and door latches won't open from the inside. The local Ford place said I need to contact Ford motor company because there are recalls for my issues but not for my VIN number and I need to get them added under my VIN so they can fix it with no charge.

46 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2020

While traveling at a slow rate of speed the brakes on my 2012 Ford Fusion hybrid failed to engage, with the pedal traveling all the way to the floor. The car was tuned off and restarted and the brakes seemed to work again. I had the vehicle towed tot he dealership and turned out the the hydraulic control and the electronic control units are both faulty. This is a recall item for 2010 Fusion hybrids, but not my year.

47 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2020

My son was driving & preparing to stop at a stop sign. It was a road he was very familiar with. The brake pedal went to the floor. He attempted to slow the vehicle & turn the corner by swerving up an embankment slightly. He realized it wouldn't slow. He pumped the brakes several times with no brake response. He chose between a garage & a tree to stop the vehicle. He headed for the tree. In insurance investigation, brakes functioned normally. Severe undercarriage damage had been repaired less than 2 weeks prior to the accident. Police were called to accident scene & filed report. There were no skid marks at the scene. The speed was estimated at 35-40 mph - within/lower than speed limit.

48 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2019

On September 26, 2014, I was involved in an accident as we were driving on a city street to where my passenger seat belt did not work upon frontal head on impact or my airbags didnt go off causing me to collide into the dash board. This caused ligament tearing in my right hand/shoulder as that was the initial impact. Now I have to continue to suffer from limitations on the use of my right hand/shoulder complications. For the brake issue beginning December 1, 2019. It has come up that the emergency brake is sticking and tearing through my brakes as I am driving on the street or even highway causing it to smoke around my back tires. I nearly lost my life once, and do not want it to happen again, but when checking brake recalls it's only up to a 2010 model and I have a 2012 model. This issue has caused the padding on my breaks to completely disappear leaving me unable to come to a stop.

49 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2019

If I hit a large bump or going down a rough road if you go to hit the brakes it's like they aren't there and the brake pedel goes all the way to the floor with a little brake at the floor , you have to stop and turn the car off and pump the brakes a few times and then they are ok , it also happens when the abs works , I think the problem is in the abs valve assembley they recalled the 2008 to 2011's for this problem but not the 2012's.

50 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/30/2019

Brakes on 2012 Ford Fusion hybrid completely failed while driving on 8/30/19. My son was driving and was going 30 mph. He used the parking brake to stop the car. I had the car towed to the Ford dealer service department 9/3/19. I am told the abs module failed. Cost for part is $700. Total repair cost $1400.

51 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/08/2019

After my abs system engaged while driving down an uneven road, my brakes have been soft for about a week now. I've tried to pump them but it doesn't seem to do anything and I need extra distance to brake than I normally would. Also, when the abs system engaged the brake pedal went straight to the floor. This has happened before when I was driving through snowy conditions this past December. The abs engaged and then the brakes were soft for a week. It finally just somehow fixed itself.

52 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/23/2019

The brake pedal goes all the way to the floor before slowing down even when accelerating at slow speeds. They're very sponges when making stops and almost non existent after hitting a bump in the road.

53 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2019

Brake pedal will go all the way to the floor and not stop the car. At times the abs will appear to activate. This could be on dry pavement or ice road surface. Has been in the service shop several times and still no solution. This car has under 60k miles.

54 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2019

The emergency cable on the left side I hung up causing the brake to wear out prematurely.

55 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2018

When I was driving on the paved road about 15 miles per hour I let off the accelerator while engaging a slight curve in the road and the car all of a sudden sped up out of control. The brakes had no effect on stopping the car. So I steered away from traffic ahead and went into an open field. The car got up to around 50 mph, and 60 yards out I hit a 10 foot wide trench by 2 foot deep. The front end hit the other side and the airbag went off. The brakes finally stopped the car about 30 yards from the trench. The decorative front end and the back end was tore off along with miscellaneous brackets. The radiator was pushed up into the hood with no leaks.

56 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2018

Brake pedal is soft, and takes longer to stop. Had vehicle checked - all brake systems function correctly except for anti-lock brakes-modulator valve. Service center quoted $2282 to replace the assembly (# be5z2c215a). The high cost is for 2010-2012 model years only. The cost drops significantly for the 2014 Fusion. The high cost of this safety related repair, makes essential repair unaffordable. Nhtsa ought to force release of an affordable part, based on safety.

57 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/06/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2012 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard when it was depressed. The contact cautiously coasted the vehicle over to the side of the road and parked it at his residence due to the failure. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer indicated that the vehicle was out of warranty and did not assist. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The VIN and failure mileage were not available.

58 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/24/2018

At low speed traveling down the road my vehicle notified me of two warnings one saying service advancetrac another saying service power steering.

59 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2018

At the approach of a stop at about 20 mph or less, when depressing the brake pedal to stop the brake pedal goes all the way to the floor for no reason and car will not stop and at times putting me and any passengers in great danger. This has happened many times, most often when pulling out of the garage but most recently has occurred at 3 different intersections and 2 times almost t/boned in the middle of a busy intersection. At what point does it take for me to or my only daughter to die because Ford won't step up to the plate and admit they have an issue with the breaking system on these cars? I have had it to the Ford shop and I have also a case # recorded to Ford. It is time for Ford to take action and recall this type of car before there is an unnecessary death related to their negligence.

60 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2018

The vehicle was towed from the scene to a salvage yard where it was deemed destroyed. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.

63 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2017

2012 Ford Fusion purchased from autofair Ford 08/11 2. 5ltr , 6 speed manual, 62k miles original owner. On 02/09/2017 about 2 pm upon approaching a rural stop sign experienced an abs brake action due to very slippery snow conditions. I stopped very slowly and was surprised the abs activated, in fact I don't think I have ever had them activate like this. 5 very loud banging sounds as someone was hitting the front underside of car with a large hammer. I immediately let off the brakes and slowly re-applied to find I had no brakes at all. Brake pedal sank to floor and I went through intersection out into connecting road. I used the e-brake to stop and luckily no on coming cars. Drove car home via e-brake as had no brakes. When home checked fluid then did some research on line and found other people are experiencing this. Read on line to disconnect the abs fuse and brakes may work again which they did but as abs fuse is out and I have brakes, I do not have abs or traction control. I have read that I can put the abs fuse back in but if I experience another abs deployment, the same result of loss of brake pedal will happen, not a safe ride I would say. I have had an on-going type of situation happening when making hard right turns in to traffic and having to accelerate fast. ( the car appears to be somehow fooled and the traction control over reacts and car starts bucking hard and almost stalls out. I have to push in clutch to stop it and avoid stalling and getting hit. Not safe. I had actually got in the habit of shutting off traction control in these type of turns prior to the event originally stated here. I have read that there is some type of abs valve body coming into suspect as the issue and no recalls have been ordered and its also an expensive fix. Which as being safety related defect I feel it should be looked into.

64 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2017

Tl the contact owns a 2012 Ford Fusion. When the vehicle was taken to have the oil changed, the mechanic heard a winding sound coming from the transmission. While attempting to accelerate, the vehicle hesitated and exhibited a jerking sensation before accelerating. Westfield Ford (located at 6200 s la grange rd, countryside, IL 60525, 708-354-8600) heard the winding noise under the hood and diagnosed that there was a default with the parking brake and rotors. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure continued. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that it would not be covered under warranty because it was expired. The manufacturer provided case number: cas25108633. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

65 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2015

The contact owns a 2012 Ford Fusion. While shifting the gear shifter into drive, the contact attempted to depress the brake pedal. The pedal failed to depress and the contact heard an abnormal noise coming from the pedal. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the hydraulic control unit needed to be replaced and reprogrammed. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the hydraulic control unit needed to be reprogrammed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 120,000.

66 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2015

2012 Ford Fusion. Consumer writes in regards to brake system problems. The consumer stated she complained to the dealer about a clicking sound. 67 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2015

What feels like is brakes sticking. 1st noticed when backing out of driveway one morning. I put car in reverse it wouldn't move without acceleration. On good days it moves on it's own. When it's acting up and I let off acceleration, car stops itself abruptly without applying brake. Early this week me and my son were stopped at drive thru window (thank god not at a stop light). When I went to accelerate to leave, my car wouldn't move. Embarrassed I accelerated harder and finally got it moving but it sounded like brakes were sticking, I couldn't go over 15 mph, car wouldn't shift was at 3 rpm, and any time I let off gas pedal the car abruptly stopped dead in tracks. Terrified I drove car a few blocks to my dad and as I was pulling into driveway they freed up. When this happens my brakes get real stiff (hard to press) he could feel the heat rolling off front tires and they smelled really hot. Took to 3 different dealerships and none can find a cause because the brakes aren't acting up at that point in time. They need to see it in action before they can get an idea. So here I am 2 months now still driving like this. This happens at least once a week. Comes and goes. Today I had pcm updated and powertrain replaced and after that when the mechanic got in car to move it, it didn't want to move. He described it as it was like having no power. They hooked it up and it showed power train. So they replaced it. He don't think it was my brakes doing this but yet the other dealership said you can clearly see where my front brakes have been really hot. I'm hoping somehow the update fixed it. Time will tell.

68 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/13/2014

I was driving at a speed of no more than 40 mph. I was on my way home from picking y children up from school when the piwer steering went completely out on my car. There is a warning light on in my vehicle that says service power steering now and service advantrac. This is the first time this happened. I had my two young children with me the time it went out. The steering became extremely hard to control however no accident occured. The brakes became hard to apply. If I had been going a faster speed when it happened I feel as though a wreck would have occured. I haven't tried the restart method because of storms. There is less than 70,000 miles on my car and this is messed up. I have read other complaints about this and I think its something Ford should issue a recall for. I have only had this car about about 5 months. I should not have to put 1500-2000 dollars into a repair for it. Thanks for investigating this.

69 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2014

Left for work this morning and first time I used my right turn signal, the signal made that fast clicking sound indicating the vehicle had a bulb that needed to be changed. After work I stopped by autozone to buy a replacement bulb. I removed the socket from the lense, and noticed that the bulb is melted into the socket. The bulb cannot be removed from the socket. I then checked the drivers side rear tail light bulb, and that bulb is also melted into the socket. I took my car to art hill Ford dealership (where I purchased the car), and was told that this would not be covered on my warranty. I was told I needed to make an appointment to have a technician look at it. I asked to have a technician please look at it now because I was concerned about the vehicle safety. The service rep said that could not happen because the technicians would have to be paid $56 just to look. I was shocked, disappointed, and worried. I made the appt. I only have approx 38500 miles on my vehicle. This should be covered under warranty or recall.

70 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/30/2013

The vehicle will stop running while sitting still (at light, stop sign), I took it in and to the dealership and they said OH yeah there's a computer update. I was never advised of the update and had to have my car die in the middle of several busy roads. After the update the car did not die any longer but that was a safety issue that should have been addressed I had to come in. The car will bog down when you press on the accelerator, it will bog down then lurch forward. The issue is when starting from a stop or any time you are attempting to accelerate. The shifting of gears seems to be slow to change. I have taken it to the dealer and I am told they can not repeat the "issue". I have had issues with braking as well. The car when in reverse on an incline did not work and I rolled down into the street. I had the brakes checked and again was told they were not able to "repeat the issue". The air conditioner will only work when it wants to. Sometimes it blows cold air sometimes it blows hot air.
