Power Steering Failed problems of the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid

While driving on the highway schedule steering service came up on the dashboard. Just after pulling over the power steering failed and I could not control the steering as it was suddenly extremely difficult to turn the steering wheel. This is an extremely dangerous situation which apparently both Ford and the safety board are aware of. Why on earth would the 2011 models be recalled for this identical problem, but not the 2010 models with the same part. My family could have been killed- would that have triggered a recall ?.

I exited my car, with it running, went inside a store, when I reentered my car & placed it in reverse & backed out of my parking spot a red warning appeared on my dash "service power steering now". I then placed the car in drive. The power steering then completely failed and I was forced to muscle it home from there. The dash indicators now say "power steering fault" after some research I find that there has been a recall for the exact same equipment used in this car, but not for this model year. Why is there no recall for this model year? this is an extreme safety issue. Luckily I was not at speed when this failure occurred as I am not sure I would have been able to control the vehicle had that happened.

In the process, the steering wheel seized, the vehicle stalled, and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to plantation Ford (707 north state road 7, plantation, FL 33317, (954) 908-6613) where it was awaiting diagnostic testing and repairs. The contact also called the manufacturer and was informed that the power steering failure was common, but a recall had not been issued. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 108,000.

Power steering failed while driving on city street making it very difficult to steer.

Twice now the car drives fine and all of a sudden power steering fails and advan trac erros and makes the car basically immobile and very dangerous. The first time the vehicle cleared itself after it was bale to be parked and sat for an hour. Currently it stranded and immobile.

Electronic power assist steering failed again, for the second time, in my car, on October 15, 2017. I had just started my car and when I tried to turn to back out of the parking space, could feel that the car did not have power steering.

On two or three occasions after starting the car and shifting into drive, a warning light came on stating "power steering assist failure" and I could tell the car had no power steering. Each time I would shut the engine off, restart the vehicle, and the problem was rectified. On June 1, 2017, the same problem occurred but this time the power steering never returned. I called a Ford dealer and explained the problem and a service technician gave me a suggestion to disconnect and then connect the battery. This did not help. I brought the car into the dealership for repair and they found the whole steering assembly needed to be replaced costing in the neighborhood of $1750. After reading numerous reports of the same problem on the internet I decided to file a complaint to Ford and also to any consumer protection agencies.

When I started the car the steering wheel would not move. The dashboard indicated that the power steering assist had failed. Turned the car off and back on and it was normal. However on arriving home shocked to see the legions of people with 2010 fusions complaining of this same exact problem with regularity since the new year. Don't feel like putting my family's as well as other strangers lives in danger by driving as many people claimed that the steering stopped while driving at high speeds. Ford should recall this model just as they have the 2011-2015 fusions. I believe the parts are the same. Thank you eric.

The power steering assist failure has made the car nearly impossible to drive.

I was pulling into a parking lot at low speed and the power steering failed and steering manually was almost impossible. I turned the car off and restarted it and the power steering worked. The next day I took the car to a repair shop and they could find no problem with the steering. They contacted Ford and were advised that the vehicle had no recalls relative to the steering failure. I contacted the Ford service department and was told that Fusion Hybrids were being recalled for power steering failure, but my vehicle was not on the recall list. How can that be?.

Power steering failed.

While my daughter was driving my car the power steering failed unexpectedly and she was lucky she was near our home. I brought the car to the dealership and they said the part will cost $1500 and it is on backorder for over two weeks! I bought this car used and found out the same part was replaced at 65,000 miles. I was told by the dealership that it's common to have to replace that part every 65,000 miles! I have had many cars and I have never once had to replace a steering gear, never mind twice. I think Ford has faulty parts and should take accountability for it!! right now I am out of a car for over two weeks and the dealership they can not give me a loaner even though it's Ford who doesn't have the part. I will never buy a Ford again after this. The cars are unsafe amd no one is doing a thing about it! melanie haskins.

Driving home about 55mph when steering got stiff and "power steering failure" followed by "advancetrac failure", then "service advancetrac system" warning messages and chimes appeared. Managed to get home without the power-assist but upon stopping on driveway and restarting car, steering was gone altogether and I could not turn the wheel. Impossible to drive. Spoke to Ford cust. Serv. Next morning who said there were no issues reported on this car and no safety recalls (although he admitted there were safety recalls on all subsequent model years of this car for steering issues) and he suggested taking it to the dealer. I told him it was impossible to drive so he arranged (and covered the cost of) a towtruck to take it to the nearest dealer. They tested the car and found only a blown power steering system fuse. After replacing fuse and testing the car they said it was now fixed. They could not identify the problem that caused the fuse to blow. I explained that I was now scared to drive the car in case it happened again and what if. . . . It happened at higher speed and the car won't steer? the dealer service manager is contacting Ford to see what she can do. Total cost to fix the fuse and diagnostic test was $111.

I was rounding a corner at approximately 10 mph, pulling out from the street where I live, and two trouble codes popped (1) "brake! check brake system"; and (2) "service advancetrac". The car immediately became incredibly difficult to steer and the brakes provided little (if any) stopping power (I am unsure if it was jamming on the brakes that provided extremely minimal stopping power or just the inertia of the car slowing over approximately 30-50 feet). The dealership ultimately provided excellent service replacing the "asb module", but I feel that it is unsafe for a car's brakes and power steering to fail suddenly, even at low speeds, and unexpected that a 4 year old car with less than 40,000 miles would have such a failure. I live near a park. If someone had decided to suddenly cross the street with a stroller, a kid had run into the street after a ball, or someone else had darted in front of the car, I would have been unable to make the necessary adjustments to avoid an auto on person crash.

The assisted power steering failed without warning on my 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid. I was turning out of a gas station onto a street when it failed and I was able to pull to the side safely. When I did an internet search I found that this is a common problem and there is a class action suit filed against Ford because of it. If that is true, why hasn't the NHTSA intervened? this is a very dangerous situation.

The car was fine throughout the day. After eating dinner at a restaurant, I had just pulled out of a parking lot into the road. Within 1-2 minutes of driving, the dashboard showed power the steering failure/advancetrac failure/service now warning messages. I was able to steer into another parking lot, and turned off the engine. The car was restarted, but the messages remained, with no power steering.

Warning light came on about the advance trac or something like that. Shortly afterwards the power steering failed. Luckily I was pulling into my driveway at the time after just getting off the highway.

Happened 3-4 times over the past 3 months. While driving the power steering would quit working, making difficult to steer. Warning on dash "power steering assist fault". Went to roadside and turned off the vehicle/restart and the problem would go away. I am a rather strong man, if a person of small stature were driving it would have been even more dangerous. On 11/1/2014 the power steering failed with the same warning. Attempts to turn of and restart the vehicle did not solve the problem. The Ford dealership stated the electric power steering failed, told me that it was common in vehicles with electric power steering. Cost for my repair was $1,900. 00.

I am out of town, and yesterday I was driving the main strip in branson and out of nowhere a light on my dash appeared saying "service power steering" and "service auto trac" I thought "that's weird" so I drove 1 1/2 miles to the very next gas station, pulled in and turned off car and googled power steering problems with Ford Fusion Hybrid,to my dismay, I did not find anything on the Ford site that I could do, so I turned on the car and decided to deal with it in the morning after all it was 10pm and no where would be open. I pulled forward out of the gas station and tried to turn and then car dash prompt said "service power steering immediately" and the steering wheel locked up tight and was unmovable. I was going around 5mph when steering locked up and pulling into traffic. I stopped and called a tow truck and sent it to a Ford dealership in branson where I was at the time. Mechanic said I need a new "steering gear" I was thankful for the warning but it wasn't much on one considering it was less then 2 miles later that it was completely locked up and "service power steering immediately" light came on, thank god for a close gas station and no traffic when I pulled out and it locked up on me. But after researching this is a known problem and some people were going a whole lot faster then I was when this happened to them. This has been my only complaint with this car, but in my opinion it's pretty major. When the car that has no way to add power steering fluid and it fails and you are driving across states with your family of 5 and no warnings till the very last second and then completely locks up on you, it's very dangerous. What if I would have waited till I got to the hotel to check the car, something needs to be done to fix this problem, none of my other cars have ever done anything like this, I had no way of knowing and no way to prevent it from happening.

Power steering assist has failed with dash indication on 3 separate occasions; the first was in may 2013, the 2nd in July 2014, and the 3rd time in sept. 2014. The 1st and 3rd occasions were at slow speeds (>10 mph) during a turn; the 2nd occasion occurred at 60 mph on a straight (thankfully) highway. That could become a serious problem in on a curvy freeway at higher speeds. After the 1st occasion, we took it into the local Ford dealer who told us that there was absolutely no problem with our vehicle. All 3 occasions cleared after turning the vehicle off and then back on. Current mileage is 146,000.
