37 Front Seat Belt Retractor problem of the 2000 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 10/10/2001

I have been having a problem with my safety belt harness for several months now. I feel this is a safety hazard. When I start to latch my seat belt on the drivers side it will twist and I have to get out of the car and help it retracked. Sometimes it won't retrack properly and I have to wear it as is. When the belt isn't like it should be and if I apply my brakes to suddenly stop it won't catch like a seat belt is supposed to. I made an appointment on 12/18/2001 to have this problem fix and the dealership said it was checked and was found to be in normal operation. My car did not do this until a couple of months ago. I know this is not normal and I feel it is a major safety hazzard. I am a faithful seatbelt wearer and I feel very uncomfortable wearing this one. I understand that your company doesn't get in the affairs of the customer and the dealer; however this isn't the first time my car hasn't been worked on due to them not finding anything. I strongly feel that this isn't the way all Ford vehicles are structured. If that were true I would have had trouble with it a year ago not one year and 6 months later. I do not wish to cause problems for the dealership I am concerned with my safety when I drive. The passenager side seat belt is fine. Thank you for your time in reviewing my case. Audrey caldwell.

40 Front Seat Belt Retractor problem of the 1997 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 05/01/2001

In 1999 at 37,000 miles the driver's side seat belt retractor failed. Recently at just under 50,000 miles the passenger seat belt retractor failed. The car was brought to the dealer, capitol Ford at 50,471 miles. The dealer stated that because the mileage exceeded 50,000 it would not be repaired under warranty. The fact that we have an extended service plan warranty did not change Ford's response. I am contacting you now because I feel that Ford motor company is being unreasonable regarding the warranty repair of this important safety feature. These seatbelts should never fail and the fact that both of them have failed seems to point to a defect that should trigger a recall. Your assistance in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

49 Front Seat Belt Retractor problem of the 1996 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 06/02/1999

The seat belt retractor for both front seats jam. They jam when you are trying to pull them out to hook then together. This does not enable you to be able to hook up your seat belts. The first occurrence was sometimes in 1997. We contacted the dealer. They took the cover off off the retractor and straightened out the belt so it would work. This has been done several times by the dealer and by the owner of the vehicle. The belt is easily twisted and jams in the retractor. The retractor was replaced by the dealer 0n September 21, 1998. The problem continued, and the dealer was contacted again on June 2, 1999 and the retractor was replaced again. We have been in numerous times for this problem and it still is unresolved as to the retractor jamming. This is obviously a serious design defect which the manufacturer should correct immediately. The car cannot legally or safely be driven with a defective seat belt assembly.

Hit the brakes and the vehicle did not stop and ran into curb. Seat belts did not hold in place, daughter went forward and hit head on dash ,then air bags deployed in a delayed reaction. Seat belts were replaced, but they don't know why they did not hold secure.

54 Front Seat Belt Retractor problem of the 1997 Ford Mustang

Seat belts jam, don't retract, can't pull out to put on. Seat belt material folds over causing doubling of fabric and jamming in guide mechanism.

59 Front Seat Belt Retractor problem of the 1999 Ford Mustang

This is a copy of the e mail:: product safety alert! I want to first state: I do not currently own a Ford vehicle. The vehicle that concerns me is 1999 Mustang with power driver's seat with switches mounted on the front of the seat (and like vehicles) I was recently installing a remote car starter/alarm for a customer who owns a 1999 Ford Mustang convertible, and I was positioned under the driver's side dashboard (on my back/side, in the footwell) and was securing a module under the dashboard and I moved slightly, and the electric seat started to move forward (the side of my torso made contact with the adjustment switch) at that point the seat was powering forward pinning the switch to my torso in the forward position (I was unable to reach it) I was being crushed! and could not stop the seat! my neck was bent at an unnatural angle and my face was coming in contact with a rather hot shop light that was positioned near the accelerator petal. I was alone in the shop, luckily I was able to sound the horn and get assistance from a fellow employee who was in our showroom, at the point he rescued me (by stuffing his hand behind my back and relieving the pinned switch, luckily he was familiar with the switch location) I was pinned between the knee bolster and the seat in (apx a 6" space) and under the steering wheel, and I am a large man of 290lbs! the seat was still continuing to move forward. I was unable to free myself and could not breath or even yell for help because my body was so compacted, when I exhaled I was unable to inhale again to yell out. At this venture I still have discomfort in my back, neck, and ribs from this incident (I am not suggesting you contact your lawyers) but I am asking you to please alert your technicians, owners, etc. , who might be put in this same deadly/dabilitating situation. Contact your design dept. For switch relocation etc. It is extremely dangerous! I hope that you will return this email/take action on this very dangerous event.
